Hi there. I'm building a new PC using an AMD 4400+ Dual Core processor, which
uses a 64 bit architecture. I want to install Windows x64 Professional on it
to get the best performance out of my system. According to this website, it
seems the only way to get the x64 version of Windows is when purchasing a new
PC? Does anyone know of another way to get it? Can I purchase Windows XP
Professional and upgrade it somehow? What about if I download the trial
version, is there an upgrade for that?

Any help would be appreciated!

Have you looked at any of the hundreds of on-line sites that sell software?

Windows 64 comes as an OEM CDROM which can be purchased from New Egg ,
Planetamd64, and other locations. This must be a clean install, without
upgrade from XP. From the tone of your question, kindly do yourself a favor
and research programs and drivers needed for x64 before you even think about
going to the new system. The learning curve for most of us has extended over
many months, and to avoid mass confusion on your part, and possibly save you
from an ulcer, spend the time learning and deciding. X64 is a beautiful
improvement, but it comes with many learning headaches. Good luck.

There is no upgrade path from Windows XP Professional x86 (32-bit) to
Windows XP Professional x64 (64-bit), clean install only.

Here is a list of places you can browse and pic and choose if you plan on
purchasing the full OEM Version of XP Professional x64 Edition:

http://www.ncix.com
http://www.directron.com
http://www.newegg.com

You can download the trial version of Windows XP Professional x64 here:

Hey guys, thanks for the answers. I don't know why I didn't think to check
those sites... I came straight to the microsoft website and saw that MS said
they were not selling it as a standalone product, and didn't pursue it any
further. Guess I should have!

Anyway, thanks for the help, clearly I can get it if I want. Now to
investigate my driver situation...
