    - Norton System Works Premier on Vista 64 I recently purchased Norton System Works Premier 2008 to run on Vista 64. Issues: 1. Save and Restore 2.0 originally listed itself as a 30 day trial. This was very confusing. I spent a lot of time with tech support trying to figure it out. I woke up the next morning and it had activated itself. I am not sure how this occurred. 2. Norton System Doctor, part of Norton Utilities, will only read up to 4 GB of RAM. All my other system tools show my full 8. 3. Norton System Doctor's live update monitor always shows me needing an update even though I ran live update recently and had all updates. 4. Defragmenter tool interface is less than desirable. Pros: 1. Cleaner interface 2. Antivirus seems less intrusive, more performant. (no real evidence to back this up, just a feeling). 3. Save and Restore 2.0. I now have my backups running the way that I want. I was not really happy with the shadow copy stuff in windows. This tool is fairly versatile. I haven't tested the restore (I really should do this). Thoughts: The new interface is much better than previous versions. I was at first taken back by the simplistic interface. I am not a big fan of dumbed down interfaces full of hyper links. I still can't figure out why everyone wants to make software look like a web page and shove everything down port 80. However, once I looked past my prejudice, I realized that this particular interface was clean and elegantly simple. It is much better organized than pervious versions. The protection center and antivirus integrated well together. The other products bundled were not part of the integrated interface. I would like to eventually see them integrated, but not until they figure out how do do it correctly. I am glad they didn't force the issue to soon. Norton Utilities was clearly not given a lot of priority in this release. The interface is getting old and tired. There were several things that are broken and I have a message into tech support. They also completely eliminated the drive map of the disk defragmenter. I was always found of the map representing the different file fragments. I like to see them rearranging themselves. Now there is just a progress bar. I am disappointed in the utilities. This used to be Norton's bread and butter and the reason why people even looked at their products.     - Does ACHI inprove performance? I recently purchased a Mtron SSD and was surprised when I benchmarked it that it didn't perform as advertised. (they claim 80mb/sec I got 72mb/sec). Someone who saw my benchmark said that if I switch the bios to ACHI it would boost it by about 20gb/sec. I tried and kept getting an error screen (Blue screen).     - Using XP Home and other windows OS's to log onto XP Pro Hi, my highschool has a Windows 2003 server and is using a portion of it as student accounts. You can go to any computer in the school and it will show the login prompt (Windows NT as client) and you got to choose the domain. Once you loged on it connect you to the server. I would like to know if you could use Windows XP Pro as a user server type machine to replicate my schools server, and how to do it. Thank you.     - XP Pro running as x32 My XP Pro came with some system advisory tools, and it is saying it is only using 32 bits of my 64 bit processor and thinks I should upgrade my version of windows. Has anyone else had this problem? It won't run x64 apps AT ALL, my screen just goes white for a sec on some x64 programs then back to normal. Anyone know how to fix? I've run Windows Update twice. MSFT must have had good reasons to do it but I'd rather live with "Search" in its "old" location. If you want the Pre-SP1 state, just follow these instructions (no reboot required). 1.     - MSCONFIG? question about startup programs As you may have guessed by my posts im a bit of a novice to be honest,i have a question im hoping you can answer.I have installed some software onto my (Vista 64 bit home basic) pc,unfortunately it starts up when i boot up-this is a pain as its not needed at all.I only need the software occasionally,not very time i turn the pc on.So i couldnt see any settings in the options of the software to stop this,and i have checked right through it.So i went to the help pages and it told me to type in 'msconfig' into the run/search box.It brought up the settings and i was able to adjust the programs i didnt want to come on at startup.Fantastic!all sorted i thought but the problem is every time i boot up/turn on a little bubble pops up along with an icon in the tray telling me i have some software stopped from coming on at startup.This happens every time i boot up and its pretty annoying for me to have to click on the bubble nad exit the icon from the tray each time.Is there any way i can stop this from happening please??I have been through it and cant see a way to cease it,if you know a way round it or how to solve the problem please let me know.Thanks again for your help folks (I apologise for being a complete dim-wit!)     - Media player / Media Center? I just installed Vista Ultimate 64. I have updated everything including service pack 1, but media player still keeps giving me problems. "Windows Media Player has stopped working A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." The problem seems to be the reason media center is giving me trouble when I try to use it: "Windows Media Center has lost its remote connection to media player and needs to be restarted." I have exhausted my troubleshooting skills (admittedly limited) and have not been able to correct it. I have successfully installed other programs (Such as Catalyst Media Center) to test out my system, and they seem to work fine. Installed DIVX and it works just media player seems messed up.     - .NET Problems I am running XP64 on an AMD 6400+ with dual Seagate 7200.11's in RAID 0, and I am running into a few problems with installing any of the .NET Framework versions. Every time i go to install it, it gets a few seconds into the install and shuts down the install with an Error message "Invalid Character in Program Files (x86)" So i have been looking around forums and I have tried unassigning the DVD drive, and then installing and I just get Invalid drive E:\, And havent been able to find any other solutions beyond reassigning the drive letters.     - Vista 64 and license I am thinking of upgrading to Vista Premium 64bit. I just bought a new laptop and I ordered Vista Premium 64bit with it and so far I like it. I have two home desktops as well and this is what the new Vista Premium will be for. First are there very many issues/conflicts with software? Office 2007, games, I-Tunes, Mozilla etc...?     - Interpretation of Taskmanager Hi I'm running Server 2003 Standard x64 version on a dual-core AMD64 motherboard.. When running a 64 bits application like 7zip (64 bits version) for the compreession of large files, I see in Taskmanager it uses 85-95 % of the CPU. When running a 32 bits application, for example Ulead's VideoStudio for video-editing, I see it uses a little less than 50 %. Question: am I correct if interpreting that the 64 bit application uses both CPU's, and that the 32 bits uses one CPU? Thank you. 'c:\program files (x86)\windows media player\wmpnscfg.exe' is listed on the Startup tab in the 'System configuration' window in my Windows Vista x64. But the 'c:\program files (x86)\windows media player\wmpnscfg.exe' does not exist actually. I deleted the 'c:\program files (x86)\windows media player\wmpnscfg.exe' from hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run but starting the WMP adds the c:\program files (x86)\windows media player\wmpnscfg.exe to the hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run again. Why? Why is the c:\program files (x86)\windows media player\wmpnscfg.exe in the hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run at all? How to make IE x64 and WMP x64 default applications, not 32bit versions? IE x64 is 4 times faster and stable than IE 32bit. Hey gang, I posted the below couple days ago in Vista general, did not have any luck there perhaps due to the high noise to signal ratio, so thought I would try here. Any feedback would certainly be appreciated. Note - I have not yet installed SP1. Hey gang, I am running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. When I go to disk cleanup, and choose to cleanup files for " all users", I get the more options tab, with the choice to let me choose to delete all but the last restore point. However, when I do this, it does not appear to delete any of the older restore points? Is this a known issue perhaps, or am I missing something?     - Logon Problem After SP1 Installed I installed SP1 for Vista x64 yesterday and have encountered the following problem since then: Computer boots up fine and allows me (or the other user) to logon without difficulty. After logon all works as expected. I will then 'switch user' and my wife will logon Then we get a problem (same problem presents itself if she logs on first, then logs off and I log on, or we switch user, basically problem presents itself when first user 'switch user' or' logs off' and another user logs on, the problem is with the second user; interestingly, the problem also occurs if I log on, log off, then log on again! Problem solved after system reset). The logon begins and the desktop appears. It seems to me like the desktop will not refresh properly. The gadgets do not appear; I can no longer single-click a desktop icon (have to double-click); the taskbar remains in the up position (won't auto-hide) and when I do launch a program the button does not appear in the taskbar; the taskbar icons do not appear in the taskbar. All these problems could be caused by some sort of video card problem, maybe? Anyway, my computer specs are below. Windowes Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 (licensed copy) Intel Core 2 CPU 6600 @ 2.4GHz 4.00GB RAM Nvidia GeForce 7950GT I have completed some initial research on this problem without success. Any ideas???     - dual dvi problems I had a 64bit XP pro computer built recently by a local vendor. I ordered an ati x1650 512 MB video card-per his recommendation. When he setup this at our site, he had been using vga adaptors. I asked him why it cant run as straight DVI and he said the drivers were not available for 64bit - Well I think thats a bunch of crap.     - Windows Live Mail Are we gonna get to use Live Mail in XP-64? It won't install, but it will run if I reach over and run it from my XP-32 on the other partition. However, I just get the message headers, not the text of the message. It's a great program, but I want it on XP-64!!!     - Intel 82801HR/HH/HO Sata raid controller causing reboots Good evening, i dont know if this is the place to ask this question... but i have scoured google for the last day or so for answers but i cant seem to be able to find the answers i need. I have a system which i have decided to put vista ultimate 64-bit edition and the system is running 2 x western digital WD5000AAKS 500gb Sata drives. Everything seemed fine at first, but i noticed recently that the disks appear to be stopping every 3 to 4 hours and rebooting the system. When the system comes back up, it attempts to report the error however cant find a solution to it. It is a blue screen error and an error code of 9f. Now when I try to access those files Photoshop is directing me to go to Windows and change permissions. I have done what I think is correct but when I go back I get the same message.     - Running 32 bit .NET programs on 64 bit Vista Hi, If I installed 64 bit Vista on a pc with 8GB RAM, do 32 bit programs have access to the additional RAM over 3GB (or is it 4GB 32bit programs are limited to?). For example, on a pc with 8GB physical RAM, say one 32bit program use 2GB RAM, if Vista has already used 4GB ram, does the 32bit program use the next lot of 2GB as though it is the first lot of 2GB or is it simply unable to address the memory? If this is unclear, I'll put it another way. If I have 6 x 32bit programs each using say 1GB of RAM on Vista x64, does the operating system assign each 32bit program 1GB RAM and handle any memory address issues? I guess being 32bit they're not actually capable of addressing memory over 4GB or so? Or are all 32bit programs limited to the first 3 or 4 GB RAM on Vista x64? You'll have to talk to the manufacturer of the mb. That's
strictly a hardware problem, not an operating system problem.

Yes. The memory parity bits would not be connected to anything, so
it's as if they don't exist.

This heavily depends on the BIOS, some do permit it others not.
I have had some machines, where I was not able to use ECC RAM only
non-ECC.
