ActiveX component can't create object error
Hi all,
Some of my clients are reporting this error on a 64-bit Windows when running
my COM objects under ASP:
-----
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a01ad'
ActiveX component can't create object
-----
This error is very common on 32-bit Windows and can be easily fixed by
adjusting permissions on the COM DLL. However, it seems that this trick no
longer works on 64-bit Windows.
Can someone shed some light?
Thanks.

Computer locks up whilst web browsing
I am having intermittent issues whilst browsing the web. I go to click on a
link, and the browser (both IE and Firefox) shows the word "Stopped" in the
bar at the bottom, the mouse shows as busy, and nothing happens at all. I
go to close the browser, which is not responding (even though Windows does
not tell me that it is not responding), the browser closes but leaves the
reference to its instance in the taskbar.
If I try to open Task Manager, or any other program, the computer does not
respond at all. The only thing to do is reboot manually. Whatever is
causing the problem locks up the pc completely.
I would love to know what is causing this problem. It only happens when I
am browsing the web.
Nothing at all shows up in the event log.
I have all the correct 64 bit drivers for all of my hardware.
Any pointers in the right direction would be most appreciated. Tag: Visual Basic 6.0 Tag: 29559
Failed Install - Please help I'm at my wits end...
Okay, I had some real nasty spyware on my old XP install and nothing (I mean
nothing) would get rid of it. It finally ground me down to the point of a
clean install. I decided to buy Win XP x64 from Newegg.com and a few new
hard drives for the clean install. I formatted the 500 GB drive and then
installed it, only I couldn't get through the install. After I entered my
key and time zone, the computer rebooted (as it should). However, it then
came up into the program with such garbled graphics that nothing was visible.
I can tell from the garbled background that it went into a higher resolution,
but there isn't a clear letter, or any letter, on the screen; there is only
some blue background and EXTREME tearing. It never asked me to increase the
resolution, nor can I find a way to keep it from doing so. I have tried 3
times all with the same result. I wanted to call MS but they actually wanted
to charge me although it isn't due to incompetence. This is now nothing more
than a very expensive coaster and since it has been opened Newegg won't take
it back. I feel cheated. So I reinstalled Win XP 32 and it didn't have the
same problem. Maybe I should ask for the most updated production to be sent
to me (with updated drivers)? Yet, I have no one to ask, unless I want to
pay more for something that isn't working.
Here is my info:
DFI Lan UT DR motherboard
AMD FX-57
2 gigs (512 x4) Mushkin Redline 4000 dual channel
Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX (not in SLI mode for install)
Dell Ultrasharp 24in WideScreen Monitor (also tried Samsung 17 LCD monitor,
no help)
Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard (working fine)
Pioneer DVD-RW 109
2x500 GB WD drives
1 bad weekend
If it had installed, I would have went into safe mode or VGA mode, but how
can I do this when it hasn't finished installing? Remember, only 1 reboot
after I enter the key and time zone, then I can't get it to go further since
it is awaiting input from me, the end user.

x64 - A smooth transition
I would like to thank everyone who has posted into this ng as by going the
postings them I have been able to install x64 successfully. I have been so
impressed with x64 that I have changed over to it completely.
I thought that I should post my experience.
- Acer 5024WLMI
- AMD Turion 64 ML-34
- 1.25Gb RAM (upgraded from the 512Mb standard)
- 100Gb HDD
- ATI Mobility Raedon X700
The Acer website had all the x64 drivers & BIOS upgrade available.
All the Acer supplied software installs and works - except the Norton 2005
AV, which I wasn't using anyway. These are:
- MS Works
- CyberLink Power Producer
- NTI Backup Now! 4
- NTI CD & DVD Maker 7
- Acer Arcade
- Acer eManager
- Acer Launch Manager
- Acer GridVista
(The CD/DVD writer would not write before I installed the NTI software)
Additional software successfully installed:
- MS Plus
- Adobe Acrobat Reader 7
- Apex SQL Edit
- Avast Anti Virus
- Crystal Reports 8.5
- DiskKeeper Professional Premier (Evaluation)
- Epson DX4200 - printer connected to x86 PC
- Google Earth
- Google Desktop
- VB6
- SQL Server 2k MSDE
- Microsoft Office 2003
- Norton Ghost 2003
- Norton Password Manager 2004
- Favourite Screen Savers
- Skype
- Giant Spam Inspector
- Windows Defender Beta
Software that has failed:
- Norton Internet Security 2006
- Norton Ghost 10
- Norton Partition Magic 8
- Zone Alarm x64 Beta - kept crashing, I have reported to ZA
- NOD32 - repeatedly froze on the final install screen
- eTrust 7.1 - wouldn't install.
- Adobe 7 Standard
- AVG - Installed fine, but I wasn't happy with it as it clashed with Giant
Anti Spam.
- Micrografx Picture Publisher 7 - 16bit installer. Sigh, I finally have to
retire my favourite graphcs program.
- Micrografx Picture Publisher 10 DCE - loaded and ran fine BUT suddenly
everything else started crashing. Removed it and after 2 reboots everything
was OK.
- PC Tools Spyware Doctor
- PC Tools Registry Mechanic
- PC Tools Anti Virus - I received the following response from PC Tools
"Although we do not support any 64 bit versions, some customers have no
problem installing in Windows XP 64."
- Tiny Firewall - Installed fine, but would not let IE32 bit run, kept
saying that it was trying to interact with Google Desktop, and this wasn't
allowed. Hmmm.. Not very useful. IE64 Bit was fine.
- Freecom DVB-T Decoder - no compatible drivers.
- Motorola Mobile Phone software doesn't work - although without the
software I can see the phone as anothe drive.
For the past 10 years I've been using Norton products through to Internet
Security 2006, and because they have not seen fit to develop a retail x64
product (or maybe they have just disabled the latest products as the older
Ghost & Password Manager work just fine - apart from NOT installing into
(x86) folders - I have then in an x86 - no brackets folder)
I have purchased Avast and am very happy with it, no shutdown problems that
others have experienced. I've also saved a lot of money for he future and
Symantec have lost a customer for the next 3 years. Any recommendations for
an alternative would be welcome.
The same goes with Adobe. I haven't decided which creator I'll buy, but it
will NOT be an Abobe product again for the forseeable future.
Once again thanks for the assistance that has been provided which has
allowed me a smooth and easy path into 64 bit computing. I will continue to
read this ng with interest and will try to contributr where I feel that I
can.
Apologies for the long post!

x64 vs Win 2003 Enteprrise, <= 32GB RAM
What are the advantages of an x64 OS vs. a Windows 2003 Enterprise server if
one has 32GB or less RAM?
(The Enterprise can address 32GB of RAM)
I think the biggie is not just the amount of RAM but the x64 box can address
the memory as a single 64-bit offset (from a base register) and doesn't need
32-bit workarounds like AWE.
I also read that x64 CPU hardware stops certain types of "buffer overrun"
attacks that are possible with 32-bit CPU?
Can you add any other items to this list.(or maybe correct my above
statements if they are wrong.)

What with x64 and I-net Bandwidth?
I just ran the Sandra Internet Connection tests on my machine, the results
was extremely peculiar. According to my ISP I am on a 10Mb feed ( 100Mb
optic fiber to Switch/Router in the cellar, and 10Mb to each appartment by
CAT 5 )
Sandra lists references as ADSL 512 | 1Mb | 2Mb, and 56Kb Modem.
1. The Connection Benchmark:
Bandwidth - 46Kb
Latency - 172ms
References:
ADSL 512Kb Bandwidth - 35Kb; Latency - 20ms.
ADSL 1Mb Bandwidth - 57Kb; Latency - 18ms.
ADSL 2Mb Bandwidth - 103Kb; Latency - 17ms.
2. The ISP Peerege Benchmark:
Bandwidth - 47Kb
Latency - 76ms
References:
ADSL 512Kb Bandwidth - 35Kb; Latency - 105ms.
ADSL 1Mb Bandwidth - 56Kb; Latency -
94ms.
ADSL 2Mb Bandwidth - 77Kb; Latency -
89ms.
( The results of this test improved vastly by having
internet radio
turned on, while the connection test showed no change
at all. )
I am aware, of course, that live tests does not compare directly with either
typical or best case figures, but surely there is something wrong with
either me, my setup or the ISP. I mean to contact the ISP about the issue
but running this OS I can imagine how they might start 'ealing' away from
any responsibilities. And I don't even know if it is up to them anyway. And
I am not even sure if I understand the test suit.
Any comment will be much appraised.

Hi,
I've got the interesting issue with XP x64 connected to 2 ethernet but
having one default route.
At some point it starting the answering from "alternative" interface to the
default route ANYWAY.
The probable cause are temporary disconnections (interface down) in a

As a result even if you ping your XPx64 primary IP (from outside) you'll get
the answer from secondary IP !!! That's funny !
