SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. said on Tuesday it plans to delay the
consumer launch of its much-anticipated Windows Vista operating system to
January 2007 from its earlier target of the second half of 2006, sending its
shares down nearly 3 percent.

Microsoft plans to launch a product for corporate customers in November and
then roll out Windows Vista for consumers after the holiday shopping season,
Jim Allchin, co-president of the company's Platforms & Services Division,
said on a conference call.

<snip>

Microsoft said Vista is delayed because it wants to improve overall quality,
particularly in security, and that PC makers didn't want the operating
system introduced in the middle of holiday sales, because a new version
would create instability in the market. ...

I thought it was delayed at the request of OEMs, since they weren't so ready
for it yet. Also, Volume License customers will still be getting it in
November, so, its still going to be shipped in 2006, only to Businesses.

And businesses are generally the slowest to adopt a new technology. They
generally want a seasoned system, not state of the art.

The OEMs are the ones who will be hurting the most from this. MS get's it's
money first and foremost from the corporate customers, plus keeps the ship
date in the quarter. The OEMs and system builders lose xmas sales, big time.
This is going to hurt their partners in a serious way.

So, when compared to the "consumer" release, doesn't that imply that the
corporate customers are gonna get a crappier/not-as-polished version?

Probably they need time to work on the consumer-only features (like Media
Center.) Maybe also it'll be RTM in November, so you can, e.g. download it
from MSDN, but general store available wouldn't be for a month or two.

The last time something somewhat like this happened was prior to XP
being released and then most of the big guys offered guaranteed free
upgrades to XP or upgrades at the simple cost of shipping and handling
of the media. Of course Microsoft had to be part of the scheme.
Nonetheless, who wants to buy a pc then 2 months later reinstall or
(egad) do an in-place upgrade! Not to mention that probably 75% or more
of the people who buy "out of the box" computers hardly have the
faintest notion how to reinstall an operating system, and those who do
wonder how well thing may or may not go. If I was to buy a new pc and
knowing that a new Windows was scheduled to be out in less than a month
or two, I would wait... unless I had absolutely no choice. So I think
you're right Charlie, it may impact Christmas sales, a very important
reporting period/quarter for some of these outfits. But then the
revenue/earnings might just be delayed to the next quarter.

Some will be delayed. Some will simply not happen. If you've got "x" dollars
in the budget, and you don't buy for the holidays, you'll spend some portion
of x in other holiday gifts. This can mean that there's no longer enough
left for a new computer. Or it may mean a longer wait than just a month or
two.

OTOH, those of us who've been watching the Vista process for the last couple
of years could hardly be surprised. I haven't thought they had a chance in
the world of meeting their original "summer of 2006" date for at least 6
months. I _did_ think they'd squeeze it in to 2006 up until quite recently.
(And no, the very limited business release in November doesn't count, IMHO.)

All of the SKU's will be ready this year, just that Microsoft is gonna sit
on the consumer SKUs (as Jim Allchin puts it) until January. So, no SKU will
be better than the other. Businesses do not necessarily buy new PC's in
holiday season to get a new OS. Some are under signed contracts to receive
the media.

Not to mention that when you change the OS, out goes your product support.
Who knows what level of driver and software will be available early on.
Since all Vista logo hardware and software will have to be able to run on
both 32 and 64 bit systems, I bet that a lot of products won't have the logo
and buyers will want to know that everything that came with the computer
will run with the new OS. XP was a mess for months after release and that
didn't include major support changes, such as all the 16-bit software a lot
of consumers have used for years that won't work and 32-bit products with
16-bit installers. Can anyone say consumer nightmare?

Dell, OTOH, was noticeably silent yesterday.

I disagree. It will hurt them all. Consumers are more likely to wait for a
Vista machine. A lot of consumers buy Dell, HP and Gateway. Just look at
the brands in Office Depot. HP and Gateway.

If the public at large wasn't aware of Vista, you might be right. But the
MS hype machine has been churning away, and most "non IT" folks do know
about it.

I expect many vendors to offer free Vista upgrades in the pre-Christmas
sales to help negate the delayed release.

That should also be taken into account, but the contracts are under a given
period, so if you signed for 2 years, you are expecting to get Vista in that
2 years and upgrade at your own pace.

Well, offering upgrade coupons will be a good incentive anyway, its just the
thought that it will be up to the consumer to do the upgrade that bothers
me. So yes, there are some negatives, but it won't have a major impact on
the PC sales.

They can use their "x" dollars and buy X-Boxes for the kids instead.
That ought to keep the kids happy for a while. ;-) Should keep MS happy
too...
