    - Installing Windows XP 32-bit over Windows XP 64-bit Somehow, I wound buying a Dell Precision workstation with Windows XP 64-bit installed on it only to discover that a LOT of my software is not 64-bit compatible and never will be. HP, Nikon, even Adobe don't appear to have functioning fixes for Windows XP 64-bit. So I am faced with having to buy an OEM version of Windows XP 32-bit and installing that if I want to use my existing software library. Never having installed an OS before, the prospect of installing Windows XP 32 scares me and I thought I would ask here for advice. 1. am I going to need special cables, etc. or will the thing load from the CD? 2. I presume I can get the necessary drivers either off the Cd that came with the computer or from Dell as the OEM? 3. could I have a problem that Windows XP 32 is an older system than Windows XP 64 (and the installer decides it won't overwrite)? 4. Assuming that I am not going to want to migrate the XP 32 license from this machine to another, is there any reason to buy a retail rather than the OEM version I can get from Dell? 5. If the world changes and more companies offer 64-bit drivers and software and I want to go back to a 64-bit machine, will I be able to reload the original Windows XP 64 OS?     - Windows Media Network Sharing Service stops responding Hi All, My problem is that every time I start my computer Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service stops responding and has to close. There is no data associated with the problem. Media Player itself crashes immediately upon opening. I have been looking for a fix for this problem for some time and have yet to find a solution. I have Vista Ultimate x64 with all available updates installed. At this point I am going to just disable the service altogether until a solution is found. This is quite annoying. So much for the Media Center capabilities of Vista Ultimate. System: ASUS P5N32E-SLI MoBo BIOS 1404, Intel E8500 CPU, ASUS EN8800GTX Video Card, ASUS Xonar DX Sound Card, 6GB RAM, 4x 320GB Hard Drives. All the latest available drivers installed.     - 64 Bit compatability issue I know my processor is 64-bit capable But I don't know about the other hardware, and all I get from the manufacturer is a run around. Is there some sort of test software I can download from Microsoft that will let me know if Ultimate (64-bit) will run? I currently have Home Premium (32-bit) but need the access to over 3.5GB RAM that the 64-bit would provide... and figured, since I'm upgrading... may as well go for Ultimate at the same time.     - I am trien to find a Vista 64 bit software package But all i can find is OEM For system builders... Am I missing something, have been to newegg.com, bestbuy.com, and circut city.com. But only Newegg has 64bit, but sold as for system builders, and circut city and bestbuy only seem to have 32bit edition as far as i can tell, all it says is vista home.. ect.     - No restore points? Vista Ultimate 64 SP1 on ASUS M2A-VM with Athlon 64 X2 5200+, 2 GB memory (was 4 GB but finally had to remove 2 GB to prevent constant weird failures.) I inadvertently hit the "Sleep" button on my keyboard (I *K*N*O*W* I should have disabled it!) and had the usual problems getting the PC to awake, it did wake up but failed to install a USB Printer and also failed to install my mouse software so..... I rebooted and... had a bunch of grief, the machine just refused to boot. I got the little green indicator which would freeze, the screen went black and only power off worked. OK, BTDT before, I know how to fix it, boot into safe mode, open Device Manager and delete Hauppauge WINTV 1600, reboot and all is well except.... oops.... can't re-install Hauppauge card, different errors so... Why not just do a system restore? Because "System Restore is turned off" and all restore points are gone! WTF? BTW, USP printer and USB mouse install properly on first reboot. I'll somehow get the Hauppauge card to install or I'll restore an Acronis Image but... WTF turned off System Restore and lost all my restore points? I don't dual boot, only one OS is installed.     - Dual Boot ??????? Hey, I recently added a second hard drive that had a fresh installation of XP32 installed. My first HD has XP64 installed. It only wants to boot the XP64 Drive. I was hoping to DUAL BOOT but when I go to BIOS I can't get it to let me change Drive Priority. I am supposed to use the "+"(PLUS) sign to raise or minus sign to lower priority but nothing happens! Is there a good program that I can install that will allow me to choose the HD I wish to boot to ? I have Partition Magic but it won't allow me to add a FAT32 partition on XP64, so I can add BOOT MAGIC. Thanks a lot for any help you may offer.     - Choose Your Setting Never Completes With IE 7, I've chosen my settings several times. When the page opens, on the botom left hand side, it says "Done but with Errors." When I chose my settings and it's says "Applying Settings," it never finishes. I've let it go on for hours but it doesn't apply settings.     - Re: Vista bullet-proof install steps Carlos Over the weekend I add a "new Wireless Desktop 3000 (wireless usb keyboard + mouse combo)" When I first booted to each system(dual boot) Vista 64-Xp64-XP My mouse & keyboard were frozen up at the log-in screen. I waited a couple of minutes(at the log-in screen) & all three systems found the correct keyboard mouse drivers. Draw back I found with this Wireless Desktop 3000 was it would not stay asleep on my system.I would put computer in sleep & in about 20 sec after it would come out of sleep mode on it's own.It was a toss up whether or not the mouse & keyboard would function at the log-in screen.Sometimes I would have to do a reset to get keyboard & mouse back.No conflicts reported in device manager or in sysinfo.     - how to fix install issues of XP x64 after Vista & XP x86? Hi, I installed Windows Vista x64. Then I installed Windows XP MCE (32-bit). Installations happened without issue. Now I'm attempting to install Windows XP x64 Pro. The CDRom boots fine and windows starts installing. After the first reboot, the error message displayed is: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe Please re-install a copy of the above file." Attempting to boot to Windows XP MCE displays the same error. After booting from the Windows XP x64 Pro CDRom to recovery console, and running "fixboot", rebooting... XP x64 boots with the same error, however MCE boots normally. (Of course, Vista boot is restored from the Vista DVDRom.) Scowering the web for articles, I discovered: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927817 The kb sort of describes my situation; XP can't be installed after Vista in a dual-boot Vista/XP scenario. However, the kb article doesn't specify 64-bit or 32-bit, and the only issue is with 64-bit XP. The article describes how Vista might modify the partitions, so that the correct partition for XP is plus one of whatever partition is mentioned in the boot.ini file. I honestly tried every possible rdisk/partition combination to no avail. So knowledge base solution provided on the Microsoft website is not complete. I've previously encountered the issue when installing XP x64 and XP x86 in the wrong order, so my guess is that the issue has something to do with XP x64 vs XP x86, and nothing to do with Vista. A Vista green screen with mouse pointer and hourglass that would never go away while the hard disk was spinning and spinning. To make a long story short, THIS is what should always be done to have a "safe", bullet-proof and enjoyable Vista installation experience. 1.- Use a standard IDE DVD drive for booting Vista installation, even if you won't use it later. You can plug your shiny brand new DVD/RW sata drive once the installation has finished. 2.- Only plug the hard disk (or disks for RAID, if applicable) that will be the home of the operating system. 3.- Disable in BIOS all hard disk controllers except for IDE and the one that holds the drives 4.- Don't plug any external hardware except for the mouse and keyboard. I would recommend vanilla PS/2 mouse and keyboard, even if you won't use them later. 5.- Disable on-board audio, parallel port, etc. You can enable them later. 6.- PCI and PCIe, only put your graphic card. You can add the other gizzmos later. 7.- If applicable, have ready a floppy/pen drive with drivers for your hard disk controller (or RAID). 8.- Use a maximum RAM memory of 2 gigabytes for the installation.     - Screen Scrolling Effect I've formatted my pc a number of times and I've always been able to change the display from the scrolling screen, like ocean waves, to just moving items straightly. I've gone into Display > Appearance > Effects and chose "Fade Effect." When that option didn't change the ocean wave effect, I chose Scroll Effect. That one didn't change the ocean wave effect either. I've always been able to change that setting but I might have forgotten and I be looking in the wrong place.     - 64-bit Cisco VPN Client I bought an HP Notebook to replace an old desktop that was running Windows XP Pro. The notebook was configured with: a.. Vista Home Premium (64-bit) SP1 b.. Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 @ 2.50 GHz c.. 4.00 GB RAM To my dismay, I have discovered that the VPN client that my government agency requires to connect to my office network will not install on the notebook. The client is a 32-bit program and my IT department does not provide a 64-bit client. So my new notebook was rendered useless as a computer to telework with. I configured it as a 64-bit Vista OS because HP sales told me it was needed in order to be able to use the 4 GB of RAM. With memory becoming more affordable, it seems to me that more purchasers of new PCs will be taking advantage of the 4+ RAM options and hopefully companies like Cisco will see fit to release 64-bit versions of their programs. I have replaced the OS with a 32-bit Vista Home Premium and installed the VPN client. The tradeoff: loss of about a gigabyte of RAM for the ability to use my notebook to do my job.     - DirectX In Win XP Pro x64 SP2 dxdiag.exe 64bit wrongly reports the CPU as AMD64, while 32 bit correctly reports Intel. System Information reports the CPU correctly. I downloaded directx_jun2008_redist.exe, expanded it and ran dxsetup.exe. It seemed to go through an install process and I rebooted. However dxdiag.exe reports no change to dx file dates and the CPU information is still wrong. This matters because all the 64 bit display drivers that don't work are placed by the NVIDIA installer in c:\NVIDIA\Win2KAMD64\xxx. I want to be sure I am installing drivers for Intel CPU, not AMD.     - Problem with IE 7 32bit under XP 64 Hi I have a problem with IE7 32bit running on my XP64bit machine. The IE 64bit version works fine and I'd be happy just to stick to that, but I can't access the MS Update page using the 64bit version - it requires me to use the 32bit version. The problem is when you open IE7 32bit it seems to just hang. The interface opens as normal and the tab reports that is is connecting, but nothing happens. It also sends processor usage right up...as though it is doing something. Unfortunately, no matter how long you leave it nothing happens. You can't close the app either and I have to resort to killing the process manually. I have tried reinstall the application but this hasn't changed anything. Does anyone have any suggestions???     - I can't install my motherboard software Whenever I put my motherboard DVD in the DVD drive, nothing happens. I used to have XP Pro x64 and it worked with that os. As a matter of fact, most of my programs won't install, such as AdAware, video programs such as BeSweet, computer programs such as Advanced Windows Care, etc. I receive messages that a file is missing from each of the programs that won't install. Another message that I receive says "This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between this version of Windows and this version of Microsoft Deprecated DLL Components."     - Leadtek Quadro FX3500 I ordered from a VAR an NVIDIA Quadro FX 3500 along with a 64 bit mobo and Win XP x64, but was supplied with a Leadtek Quadro FX 3500. Although it works with the Win default VGA driver, it will not work with any driver from Leadtek or NVIDIA. I can find no mention of 64bit on the box, user manual or Leadtek web site so I am suspecting that the Leadtek BIOS does not support 64bit. Is this likely?     - IE7 on X64 - This PC, X64, or? I have found some occasional problems with websites, but only using IE7 on X64. I don't personally know anyone else with x64, so I cannot confirm whether the error is this PC or Microsoft. If there is anyone out there with a Netgear DG834G, would you log into it using IE7 (either 32 or 64 bit) and tell me if the Wireless page displays, or does not display. It displays with Mozilla and Safari, but not IE7. All the other DG834G pages work fine - it is just the wireless page that shows up empty - noting the help along the right side and the menus on the left both display just fine. Online checkin with Virgin Blue also does not redirect to the checkin page from the home page, it just displays an empty page and "done". Safai or Mozilla work fine. There are a VERY SMALL number of other non-functioning web pages using IE7. Both Mozilla and Safari usually work fine, and I reinstalled IE7 from the download site (but did not uninstall-reinstall, which could be a fatal error in itself).     - Another Vista install tip Along time, more and more people is moving on to Vista. Guess who they call in town when they have a trouble? This one took me one hour to solve it. I was supposed to be an easy one. Vista x64 on an nVidia nForce 550 based mobo, had disks in RAID, IDE DVD was just a piece of cake. Well... not. After booting off the DVD, Vista would ask for DVD drivers!!! Drivers for vanilla IDE? WTF? I tried every known recipe. Flash BIOS, reduce memory speed (they were only 2 gigs!), increase memory voltage, disable every non necessary device, unplug everything. No dice. Until I took a closer look at the DVD IDE flat cable. It was an "old" 40 conductor cable as opposed to the newer 80 conductor ones. I replaced it, using a very bad looking ugly 80 conductor I had in my junk box and that was it. I am switching from XP home to X64 so I know that I will have to format my old drive and install a fresh copy of the X64. When I try to boot from the CD I get a weird error message. I plan to load Vista x64 on this system and run it with Raid 1 on my disks. The raid F6 disks that came with it do not have Vista Drivers on them.     - A little help from my friends! This is a sharing issue but I hope my buddies will be able to help me. I have 3 hard disks in my PC. One is standalone SATA (I:) and there's where I keep my documents, favorites and e-mail. The two others are raid-0 SATA, having Vista in Primary Partition C: and 4 other partitions for different tasks. (D:, E:, F: G:) So far I have been sharing in my home network only one folder in the standalone disk (I:). I can access to that folder from the other PCs by having added the user "Guest" ("Invitado" in Spanish) in the sharing options. When working locally on that folder I have full R/W rights and when accessing remotely I can only read. So far so good. Now here's the issue. Whenever I share a folder in any of the other 4 partitions (D:, E:, F:, G:) I immediately lose writing rights on that folder. I, locally, can only read but not write or delete or rename. Even un-sharing is denied. And the only possible recovery of rights is by going to Disk Management, delete the partition, recreate it again and not sharing it! Any ideas? Ok just got windows vista 64 ultimate

have installed latest tuner card software
have installed different versions of nvidia software from clean installs.

I am getting the following error trying to watch live tv or record it:

"Video Error"

Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly.
Please
restart Media Centre or restart the computer

To my knowledge vista ultimate should have the correct codecs come with it ?
what is happening ?
