Interesting, given that the date on the files is the 29th. Looks like he
jumped the gun a bit.

Yes, it was made a bit early before the official notice from VM Ware.

Thanks for the heads up. I guess I can start watching for the link to an
update page. I already have a retail license for 5.0 so I expect this one
will be a freebie.

Yup, it's supposed to be a free update. I've been running the beta, but it
says "no update available" when I checked.

I have the beta too, but didn't think about checking for the update there.
Good tip. I've just been watching the website. I don't think the website
will say anything until the 29th.

I think you're right. And I think I'll wait till then, just in case there's
a last minute change. After all, the RC I'm running right now is doing fine,
and I'd just as soon not do another install that I don't need to.

This is a follow-up email to my VMWare inquiry today...

'' (http://securityfeeds.net/sysinfo/)
1, I run a dual AMD OPTERON server (CPU model 242) under Fedora
Core 2
Linux OS. VMWare 5.0 runs on this system.

2. I have run the 64-bit compatabiity utility from VMWare at -->
http://www.vmware.com/download/ws/

3. The program responds -->
# ./VMware-guest64check-5.5.0-18463
This host is NOT capable of running a 64-bit guest operating
system
under this VMware product.
For more detailed information, see
http://www.vmware.com/info?id=152

4. This does not make sense to me. The condition of AMD Opteron
Rev E may be the issue. How do I learn more about this?

Are you referring to a problem with VMware on Windows x64?

Or are you referring to a problem with VMware on Fedora?

If you're referring to a problem with VMware on Fedora, I truly believe
you took a wrong turn somewhere. This news group deals with Microsoft
Windows x64, not Linux.

Re: VMware Workstation 5.5 released by Rick

Rick

Since VMware plainly states on their site:

Support for 64-bit guest operating systems

Workstation 5.5 supports virtual machines with 64-bit guest operating
systems only on host machines that have one of the supported 64-bit
processors:
* AMD Athlon 64, revision D or later
* AMD Opteron, revision E or later
* AMD Turion 64, revision E or later
* AMD Sempron, 64-bit-capable revision D or later (experimental support)
* Intel EM64T VT-capable processors (experimental support)

If your Opteron is not one of the three rev. E, then I would presume
that means it won't work on your system.

If you have a rev. E, then the logical thing to do would be to contact
VMware.

RTFM (Read The Friendly Manual!)
