I built my system in January and had a flawless install of every software and
driver I have, my OS was XP PRO 64bit. My so-called upgrade copy of vista
finally showed up so I installed it. Unfortunately I had to start clean
because it was not an upgrade like the 32 bit was. I could not make any of
my software work except for office pro 2007. Go figure. I could not use any
of my Cad or sign design software. I got errors stating that I had a valid
image, but is for a machine other than the current machine. SO, fed up with
Vista I did another clean install back to XP PRO 64bit. Now I have the same
problems. My question is, Did Vista modify my BIOS, or did it leave
something on my hard disk. I figure a clean install should be just that. I
am no better now than when I had vista installed. I was wondering If others
had the same problem. If so what you did to correct it. Any help would be
greatly appreciated

Vista didn't modify your BIOS, nor did it leave anything behind, since you
had to do a clean install.

" valid image, but is for a machine other than the current machine" is the
error message you get when you try to install a 16 bit program in any 64bit
Windows. It simply isn't supported. You _can_ get this message because the
installer is 16 bit, but the program itself is 32bit and will run. If that's
the case, there are some workarounds to get it installed. As for "making my
software work" - there's no magic here. It's the same as it was in January.

If you have any doubts about something "left behind" - by all means delete
the partition and recreate it during the installation.

Thank you Charlie for your response. I understand pretty much all the info
you have passed on to me. What I don't understand is the software that I'm
installing, I already installed once on xp pro before I went to vista. Now
the same program will not install. I explored the cd to check if there is a
32 bit install package and there is just the one, Thanks for your help.

just for the hell of it, I pulled a spare 400 gig hd from my computer
supplies and switched it out with the one that had operating system on it.
After I got windows started, I was able to install my software like I did
when I built it. Yes, I did delete the partition on the first drive. I did
not use the quick format either.

Why not try it with Vista64 now that you have a drive that works.

There was nothing wrong with my drive mechanically. Like I say I'm using it
as extra storage now. I contacted Autodesk and they are not patching any of
their software to run on vista x64. I would have to purchase autocad 2008.
Same with FlexiSign. FlexiSIGN alone run $3800. All in all it's close to
$9000 to purchase all the software to run on vista, that I'm running right
now on xp pro x64. If and when anybody creates any patches will determine if
I upgrade again. It's kind of sad because vista on my laptop really rocks.
I find myself using it more than my home pc and the laptop is 2 years old.
Thanks for your reply.
