OFF TOPIC: How many newsgroup readers does it take to change a lightbulb?
How many forum members does it takes to change a light bulb?
1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed
14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light
bulb could have been changed differently
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs
1 to move it to the Lighting section
2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section
7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs
5 to flame the spell checkers
3 to correct spelling/grammar flames
6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" .. another 6 to
condemn those 6 as stupid
2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp"
15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb"
is perfectly correct
19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this
discussion to a lightbulb forum
11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs
and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum
36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy
the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique
and what brands are faulty
7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs
4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected
URL's
3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this
group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group
13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all
headers and signatures, and add "Me too"
5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot
handle the light bulb controversy
4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"
13 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about
light bulbs"
1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start
it all over again.

Office submenu appears dimmed
After Office 2003 SP2 and when Outlook is running, all rest Office
applications submenu appear dimmed, the right mouse menu also. I have to
close Outlook to reappear the menus. I tried detect and repair, nothing. I
uninstalled and reinstalled Office, the problem insists. I use the latest
nvidia video driver, I uninstalled it, no solution. I changed the video
resolution, I disabled the visual effects, nothing, no solution. :(
All menu of Outlook work perfect, the problem appears on all other Office
applications and some times in Internet Explorer 32-bit, but never in
64-bit.
Any ideas?? Thanks in advance and sorry for my english.

x64 Installation BSOD
Thank you in advance for your help. When I attempt to install x64 I get past
the part where it loads the drivers and I think it says Windows Setup at the
bottom bar. Right after that the screen goes blank and then the blue screen
comes up with the STOP: PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED error.
I am running an Athlon 64 X2, on an n-force4 mobo with an nvidia 7800 video
card. I have a single 100 GB IDE HDD.
I have tried the following troubleshooting steps with the exact same results:
*Updated all firmware.
*Removed all non-essential components.
*Removed all but one stick of ram.
*Formatted HDD
*Hit F6 during pre-install and provided n-force IDE drivers.
*Asked it to work very very nicely.
Any assistance you folks can offer will be appreciated. Tag: TV Tuner Card Tag: 18807

Question about Dual Booting \ Multiple OS choices in WinXP Pro 64x
Is it possible to install Windows XP Professional 64x and Windows XP
Professional 32bit on the same machine (perhaps by using 2 HDs instead of
one) in order to be able to select between the 2 operating Systems at Start
Up like you currently can with pretty much any version of Windows ?
I hope it is, I would like to be able to keep my 32-bit system for all of my
older applications, get a few more drives and use Windows 64-bit for
Recording Studio Applications alone such as Sonar 5 Producer Edition which
supports 64x and other Audio tools that will benefit from the increased power.
I am currently debating wether or not to install the trial because of this,
I'm not sure if I really feel like making an Image of my current system
incase I decide 64x isn't for me or for when my trial is up and I don't have
money to purchase it just yet.
Hopefully somone may answer. Thanks ! Tag: TV Tuner Card Tag: 18769

64 Bit Installation Concerns
I'm running Windows 64 bit OS on a Dell 2850 Xeon system. I am
starting to regret going to 64 bit as this OS does not seem ready for
prime time. First, my SQL connection does not work on my ASP
application (it works fine in Windows 2000 Srv). The error message I
get using DSN or SQLOLEDB is:
ADODB.Connection error '800a0ea9'
Provider is not specified and there is no designated default provider
Again, no issues on Windows 2000. Also, my Veritas Backup Exec 9.1
isn't compatible with 64 bit. Should I consider going back to 32 bit?
Is there a way to install 32 bit over top of 64 bit (without wiping the
box). Also, is a 32 bit version avaiable on the 64 bit media?

Installation HANGS
I just built a computer using intels 630 emt64, giga-bytes 8n SLI Pro (nforce
4 chipset), GEIL DDRII 667mhz memory, WD Raptors (2x36GB) raid-0, and 2
chaintech 6600gt's
durring the installation process i pressed F6 to load the 64bit SATA
drivers, everything went extrordinarly well - from the "39 minutes remaining"
till "Saving settings" took only 7 minutes..... then at "9 minutes remaining"
i received a blue screen error message. the computer rebooted itself and
windows install restarted... again at 9 minutes remaining i received another
blue screen error yet this time it was different. This whole process went on
for about 4 days of swapping hardware, testing, retesting and a lot of
reconfiguring of the hardware and the bios with no success. I have tested the
motherboard, ram, hard drives, power supply, and graphics cards on my
girlfriends identical computer except for she has intel's 530 32bit
processor; all hardware successfully operating. So i figured that the
processor was the reason for the error messages, and took the processor back
and exchanged it for a new one and had the tech at the store install the new
processor (for liability reasons) and go through the installation process as
well.... Same results - same spot in the saving settings, and he also
performed the same trial and error testing that i performed. (the only way i
can get this machine to work is with "32" bit xp pro and NOT the x64
version... but i did not build this machine to be "32 bit" --- it is a 64 bit
processor so it should be operating xp x64, i installed the trial version and
that worked "kind of". there were several times that blue screen errors
happened and i figured that it was because that it was a "trial" version and
may not have full support. my question is what is going on with the
installation? i feel like i just waisted a lot of money on a version of
windows that i cannot use. Tag: TV Tuner Card Tag: 18706

msjet35.dll - Incorrect Version Error
Hello everyone,
I recently downloaded an installed the trial version of XP 64 Bit on a

fine. However I have two 32 bit applications that utilize an Access database
that I am receiving the above listed error on. "MSJET35.DLL" - Incorrect
Version. The applications both seem to install fine however when you
actually try to run them is when you get the error. Anybody have any
suggestions? Or is this just simply an incompatiblity error with no present
workaround?
Thank you in advance.

trial version update
I downloaded the windows xp64 bit beta version last year when bought an msi

notified or sent an email to download the full version? When is the
finalized version expected to be out, is it within the next 120 days?

Will Visual Studio 6 run on Windows XP 64-bit?
As the title says - Will Visual Studio 6 run on Windows XP 64-bit?
I've seen one source that implies it won't, but nothing else to verify or
refute that. As a Visual Basic 6 / Visual Basic.NET developer I need to be
able to both maintain existing code in VB6 and write new code .NET. I'm being
upgraded to a new PC with 64-bit Windows and wondering if this will work or
not.
I expect this will become a more common question as developers move to
64-bit machines over time. I think it would be very useful for Microsoft to
explicitly state whether this is a consideration or not in the Visual Studio
6 information in MSDN.
Thanks for any input anyone can provide.

Constant Disk Access
When I first built my computer, I had constant disk access for about a week.
It finally calmed down to just when I used it. Now three weeks later, it is
back. The drives just will not stop running. I can't play a movie in the DVD
plaver because the HD activity is sucking up all my I/O band width. I get
some real jerky video. This should not be happening since I am running a dual
core AMD 3800+ with 2 gig of Ram, and 5 250 gig SATA II hard drives. I need
to explain this. "C" & "D" are a single SATA II drive with 50 gig set aside
for the "C" drive. The "E" drive is also stand alone on a SATA II connection.
The other three drives are set up in a raid 5 configuration on SATA I
connections. The drives are all Hitachi and reconfigured to support SATA II
even though the raid 5 configuration does not support it. Tag: TV Tuner Card Tag: 18634

Windows Compression. . .anybody ever use it?
Next question:
Seing that hard drives, in the face of eternal development, remains the
bottleneck of the PC, is anybody using compression today? Since compression,
theoretically allows for less data to be read from the HD while putting the
extra labour in fast memory, is there any speed boost? In the inevitable
situations where there is a speed penalty, is the extra space it creates
worth it. I remember how DOS pioneered compressed volumes, can't say I saw
much difference then, except the hazzle to maintain it. I havn't used it
since, and I simply havn't got a clue as to what became of the technology.
Any one experienced any difference here with 'x64'? What you say? Am I
siding with the suckers in this matter?

Group Policy editing
For test purposes I have setup a WinXP x64 workstation, made it a member of
our domain, and installed the admin tools from Adminpak.msi for Win2003
server 32-bit. When I try to edit a group policy object from AD Users and
Computers, I get an error msgbox saying that gpedit.msc cannot be found, but
a file search shows that gpedit.msc exists in c:\windows\system32.
If I run either the 32-bit or 64-bit version of MMC, it allows me to add the
group policy editor snapin, but forces me to associate this with only one
group policy object. As we have about 60 GP objects in our AD this is not a
viable solution.
Is it possible to edit GP objects on an x64 workstation in the same way as
on a 32-bit workstation, by going to the properties of an OU and then editing
the GP object from the group policy tab of the OU properties dialog?

Where is MBR on RAID0 System?
Hi!
I have some left over space on my RAID0 (aprx. 74GB) out of curiosity, I
want to install some 'other' OS in a new release - strange, though, it will
not recognize what is currently on that RAID, but is seing two HD's of 114
GB and offers to create a RAID on there.
So, instead, I have decided to not use the RAID, put back in an old IDE
drive and use a BOOT-Floppy, but I would very much like to know if I could
make good (and safe) use of the MBR on the existing RAID. I strongly assume
that the MBR is on the first disk on the RAID (BIOS Disk 0) since it is so
little data that it would make no sense to have it striped, and I also
assume that the BIOS would need access to the MBR before any RAID is
present. But I just do not know - any advice???
