Virtual CD/DVD tool for 64 bit Windows
I've been hunting for a Virtual CD type tool that works on Windows 2003
Server 64 bit that can handle ISO DVD images.
So far, I've only found some that work on 32 bit windows or that work on 64
bit but cannot deal with DVD images.
Anyone know of a Virtual CD/DVD tool for 64 bit Windows that can
"virtualize" an DVD ISO image (preferably free!)?

Windows 64 bit porting - AMD vs. Intel
Hi,
Following a thread at OSR's newsgroup
(http://www.osronline.com/showthread.cfm?link=88874), I will be happy to
know your opinions for the following issue:
Given all the above discussion (link above) , it seems I should
focus on considering porting to x64 (AMD64/EM64T). To
get a better understanding of the how/which answers, I
would appreciate it if you guys can share any market
projections/insights you have in regards to the
penetration of these systems in 2006 and 2007.
Furthermore, it would be interesting to understand the
x64 support for Vista. I mean, would all x64 systems
be installed with a 64bit OS, or do you guys think
that, as today, most x64 systems will still be shipped
with 32 bit OS.
Do you have any insights in regards to the
configuration of x64 systems by major OEMs (HP, Dell,
etc.) and which OS are they going to put on the
system?
Thanks! Tag: True Image Tag: 30053

Hey everybody,
For whatever reason, the menu and toolbars at the top of my Folder view

not there. If I right-click on an unopened Folder, then Explore, they're
there. But not the Folder view.
Any ideas?

Windows 64 XP PRO & ACPI Drivers
I installed Win XP Pro 64 Bit Edition and I have a problem in Device
Manager. Other (which I have found out to be ACPI) ha the dredded ! next to
and keeps asking for drivers.
In Media Center Edition under Device Manager the first items listed is :
ARPC Devices
| MS ArACPI Driver
| MS ArPolicy Driver
The above is not in Device Manager in the 64 Bit Windows just listed as
other in the Other category and keeps aksing for a driver. I don't know
where to get the driver from.
I tried reinstalling Windows and at the first screen I pressed F5 to
select ACPI Multiprocessor PC and let Windows continue to setup but that did
not help with the ACPI driver. Where can I get drivers or how do I fix the
problem. My machine specs are as folllows:
HP Pavillion a1350n
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 + 2.2GHz/1GB/250GB/
ATI Raedon Xpress 200
I do have the latest BIOS installed. Anyone else know where to get drivers
or how to fix?

64 bit processor: XP 64 or not?
Hi,
I'm getting a new laptop with AMD 64 Dual Core processor. I'm using this pc
to develop in Visual Studio 2003, 2005, and will isntall also SQL Server
2000 and 2005, Visio etc.
- Should I install the XP 64-bit version or the 'normal' version?
- Does the 64-bit version will have a significant difference in performance?
If yes: how much percent is the difference? When using visual Studio?
- Will I find all the necessary drivers when I use 64-bit? Or is this a pain
in the *ss?
- Any other things I should think about/consider?

License Conflict Between x64 And Windows XP Pro English(32-Bit)!
Hello,
I would like to ask about a problem i am having and i have searched
anywhere i could possibly imagine.Unfortunately,i came out empty.
I own a couple of operating systems which are genuine.An XP Pro
(32-Bit) and
an x64.Both are english.I Haven't installed them yet to my computers.My
Question is this:
Can I register them both in my name,through microsoft activation?
I'm asking because i've heard that if you register an XP(32-Bit) and
after
that an x64 to the same name, the registration of the XP 32-Bit
operating
system is automatically cancelled!!!!!!!
Is this true?????
Thanx,

Lexmark Printer (All-In-One) - Driver?
I have a Lexmark X6170 All-In-One printer (new). Works fine but Windows XP64
doesn't work with it.
Lexmark has no drivers to suggest. (On their website or email tech-support)
It seems to be a relatively straightforward printer.
Any suggestion for another driver I might be able to use with it to print?
(If I need the scanner or other features I can switch to XP32 but printing
is pretty basic.)

Networking problems
I have three computers on a home network using a router. One computer is
running XP64, the others are running Win XPPro. When I set up my network the
XPpro computers see each other but they do not see the XP64. The XP64 does
not see the other two. When I select "see workgroup computers" on the XP64
there is a long pause and then I get an error message that I do not have
access to that resource. I am logged on as Adminstrator when this happens.
I set the network up as accessing the internet through a network hub. I can
access the internet on all 3 computers.
I've checked the firewall (AVG 7.1) and that doesn't seem to be the problem.

Virus? Firewall?
Hi
I was browsing through three or four pages. My system suddenly hang and I
had to restart. On restart 'Adware' had an alarm that certain registry keys
are being modified. I tried blocking the changes but don't know what happened
a total of 28 registry keys were changed and all of the executable files were
changed to the extension '.lnk' and I could not run anything not even
Internet Explorer. But I wonder, all the drivers were working fine. I have
Mcafee Enterprise 8.0i; but still it could not work. Could it have been
because of a firewall problem as I use the built in firewall of Windows?
I formatted and reinstalled everything on the root partition. Luckily the
virus did not infect the other partitions.
What could have caused this problem and how can I stop it from happening
again!

Looking for samples, links, etc. for Activex 64
I googled for hours searching for whether is it even possible to create

(including postings on this board) say that "...most folks have yet to
re-write their 32-bit activex for IE64" which led me to believe that
it's possible to do so and there is an activex control out there
written for IE64. Can anyone point me to some sort of tutorial or demo
of such control ?
I found this tutorial
http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/Code/2003/March/ActiveXInNet.asp . I
haven't tried to recompile this one for IE64 which seems it is
possible. However, when I ran this on IE32, no control got downloaded
to Downloaded Program Files folder or displayed on "manage add-on"
window. This is not what I'm looking for.

Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 localised into spanish
As far as I know, x64 versions of Windows Server are not localised into any
language but english. We need to install the english version and then install
the right Multilingual User Interface Pack on top of the english
installation. Is this also correct for R2?
I saw some days ago (in http://licensing.microsoft.com , products download
area, selecting the product Windows Server Standard) that the Spanish
localised version of R2 was already available, but only 32bits version!
However, in our case (we have just bought a dual Xeon server) we would like
to install R2 x64 but localised into spanish.
What would be the downloads that we need to do and the steps to follow in
order to achieve this?
Note: We have VLKs (among others) for:
Win Server 2003 R2 x32 Ed.
Win Server 2003 R2 x64 Ed. <-- We'd like to use this one
Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2003, x64 Ed.
To start with, I supposed that we would need the following download:
* Windows Svr Std 2003 R2 32-bit/x64 English Disk Kit MVL MVLS Only ISO CD
and then install this one:
* Windows Svr Std 2003 w/SP1 32-bit/x64 English/MultiLang Disk Kit MVL CD
However, since the latter download is not explicitly for R2, all the new
management functions, programs, help files, etc, included in R2 were not
translated into spanish, and remained in the original english.
Is there any (or there will be any) MUI for R2 x64? By now, a have a server
with a mixture of english/spanish. The basic behaviour of Win2003 Std w/SP1
is localised, but the new things included with R2 are in inglish.
Might I need to install the MUI ##before## the second CD of R2? Honestly, I
don't think that would make any difference.
Regards and thanks in advance. Tag: True Image Tag: 29901

Any chance of a Vista price break
Admittedly an off-the-wall question:
When Vista comes out, what do you think the chances are that people with
retail versions of XP x64 will get a price break?
1) We are, in a sense, beta testers of the 64-bit world.
2) I assume it would be an easier transition from x64 to Vista than from any
32-bit version of windows. Seems like it would be an easier upgrade. Tag: True Image Tag: 29885
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version Confusion
Hey there,
I'm investigating Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, and having recently
purchased an AMD Athlon 64 system, am considering giving it a test-drive.
However, while researching it I have run into some confusing points. So, at
the risk of looking like a complete idiot, I wonder if someone could please
clarify these points:
* While perusing through the security updates available for x64 on Technet
Download Center, I noticed that in the Product Selection menu, you could
select between two versions of x64, "Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition"
and "Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition Version 2003". I wasn't aware
there were two separate distinct versions of Windows XP x64?
*Further, if I selected "Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition", I can
choose between the gold or SP1 version. I wasn't aware there was a Service
Pack available for Windows x64, and searching for additional information
turned up nothing?
*Finally, when comparing the three different versions of 64-Bit (Windows XP
Professional 64-Bit Edition Gold + Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition
SP1 + Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 Gold (There is no
SP1 for the Version 2003 Edition), I noticed the security updates seemed to
be the opposite of what one would expect (This is when "redundant" updates
are selected not to be shown, but updates of every severity are shown):
Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition Gold: 40 Updates
Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition SP1: 41 Updates
Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition Version 2003: 62 Updates
Last, there appears to be a mistake in the download center, in that versions
of Windows Server 2003 are listed in the Service Pack selection dialog when
versions of XP x64 are selected, despite being two separate OS's.
Apologies if I am being dense, but I find this somewhat ambiguous and
confusing.
Yours sincerely,
Edward Adart Tag: True Image Tag: 29867

MS wireless model 1027 keyboard & Mouse
I have a MS wireless photo keyboard (model 1027) and wireless
Intellimouse explorer 2.0. I installed it using the disk that came
with it, everything worked fine until about a week ago. Now whenever I
boot my system it will go through the Windows XP logon screen, prompt
for my password and then it will start to loose power as though there
is a loose connection. It will then shut down and reboot, it may go
through this process several times before it gets a "good connection"
and stays on. I narrowed it down to this problem by using a hard wired
keyboard and mouse which eliminated the problem. I reinstalled the
drivers from the disk and also checked the MS web-site for updates. A
friend mentioned that since I have "Automatic Updates" turned on it is
possible that MS updated a driver that caused the problem. Has anyone
else experienced this problem, if so what if anything did you do to fix

Help! _VtblGapPlaceHolder1() added during preprocessing
Hi,
Yet another problem of different behavior exhibited when building on
Win2k and XP.
Using AMD64 environment (Windows 2003 SDK SP1-April2005 edition - /XP64
/RETAIL options set) and VS2003 IDE to compile a file.
This cpp file is importing a typelibrary like this:
#import "COMLib.tlb"
//.... code
//.... code
When I compile this file in Win2k and generate preprocessor output (/P
option), I see that for an interface definition, two extra methods are
being added (_VtblGapPlaceHolder1( ) and 2..)
struct __declspec(uuid("4730c519-8998-43f6-993b-80befea1d404"))
ITCSpecific : IUnknown
{
HRESULT GetUserKey(/* removed params */ );
HRESULT ReleaseSpace ( );
HRESULT WriteValue (/*removed params*/ );
virtual HRESULT _VtblGapPlaceholder1( ) { return
((HRESULT)0x80004001L); }
virtual HRESULT _VtblGapPlaceholder2( ) { return
((HRESULT)0x80004001L); }
virtual HRESULT __stdcall raw_GetUserKey ( /*deleted other
params*/ ) = 0;
virtual HRESULT __stdcall raw_ReleaseSpace ( ) = 0;
virtual HRESULT __stdcall raw_WriteValue (/*deleted params*/ ) =
0;
};
Under same conditions on Win XP SP2 however, the preprocessor output
does not have these PlaceHolder methods. And my server dll was built on
XP SP2.
:( so when I build client on Win2K, method invocation is messing up due
to extra 16 bytes added to vtbl offset because of PlaceHoler()
methods. and so instead of invoking GetUserKey(), WriteValue() gets
invoked.
WHY, WHY!! Why is the compiler behaving differently on Win2k and Win XP
SP2. What brings in _vtblGapPlaceHolder1() methods??? I can't ship my
SDK code until it is buildable from Win2K and XP SP2 targeted to 64-bit
environment. :((

News: Microsoft Smooths Road to Vista with Apptimum Buy
Qoute:
Microsoft announced March 7 that it is has acquired application-transfer
specialist Apptimum for an undisclosed sum.
Formerly Eisenworld, Apptimum, based in Sunrise, Fla., began in 1998 and is
best known for PC relocation products branded with the vacation-friendly
moniker "Alohabob," named after the founder's father, who lives in Hawaii.
Microsoft's plans for the acquired intellectual property and technology
assets of Apptimum are focused on streamlining the application transfer
process between older and newer computers, with an emphasis on Window's
Vista migration.
Read the rest here http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1935330,00.asp
Interesting purchase, I thought originally that Microsoft was developing a
migration technology in house for Vista. My reason for believing this was
after seeing a demo presented at WinHEC 2004 by Microsoft Platform Group
President Jim Allchin showing what had seem to be a prototype migration tool
for what at the time was named Windows "codename" Longhorn.
Alohabob has been around for a while, I first heard about it on TechTV as a
highly recommended solution for migrating PC settings to a new computer. Its
gonna be free for Windows Vista users, so you really can't beat that. What I
think would be great is migration of registry settings, if Microsoft works
migrating Registry settings to Vista from say.. a Windows XP computer, it
would definitely be awesome.

harddrive I installed it on and will not let me boot into the old WinXP Pro.
It does not even see that harddrive. It appears on the Hardware Manager list,
but I can't get it to see the drive. I moved all my software to the now
unaccessible Win32 HD. Anyone have a clue as to what to do? Tag: True Image Tag: 29695
PROBLEMS!
Hi, Ive recently took the jump to xp x64, the main reason for this is because
of how quick it deals with large apps. Its on my system and working (in a
fashion) however none of my software seams to work now, Quark, Corel, Adobe
and even my security is down.
Ive been to the sites and tried to look for x64 updates and drivers but with
no results! Yes I know its my fault and I should have done a little more
research into compatibility.
I'm possible going to go back to the 32bit system but I'd like to give this
a chance to work.
Any help on this would be very great and suggestions for software that other
people are using in XP x64 would also help.
Thanks in advance,
Sam. Tag: True Image Tag: 29687
different behavior of AMD64 compiler 14.00.40310.41 on Windows xp and 2k
Hi All,
I found Windows AMD64 compiler behaving differently When used on
Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2K professional. (both using Windows 2003
SP1 SDK - April edition)
I've a .tlb which is imported in my .cpp file. This typelibrary has a
structure defined inside and I'm using it in my code.
XXX.cpp:
#import COMLib.tlb
using namespace COMLib;
....
main()
{
COMLib::STRUCTDAT structData;
}
....
//
When the project is compiled on XP SP2 with VS2003 IDE, the tlh code
generated looks like follows:
// Created by Microsoft (R) C/C++ Compiler Version 14.00.40310.41
(cda64a29).
//...
#pragma once
#pragma pack(push, 8)
namespace COMLib {
....
....
#pragma pack(push, 4) //////Here is the difference, on WIN2k, this
value is 8.
struct STRUCTDAT
{
unsigned long ValidationDataLength;
unsigned char * ValidationData;
};
#pragma pack(pop)
....
....
}
#pragma pack(pop)
While on Win2k the same project under same environment the tlh
generated looks like
// Created by Microsoft (R) C/C++ Compiler Version 14.00.40310.41
(b739b039).
//...
#pragma once
#pragma pack(push, 8)
namespace COMLib {
....
....
#pragma pack(push, 8) //////Here is the difference, on WINXP, this
value is 4.
struct STRUCTDAT
{
unsigned long ValidationDataLength;
unsigned char * ValidationData;
};
#pragma pack(pop)
....
....
}
#pragma pack(pop)
Because of the wrong alignment on XP, sample built here fails while
built on Win2K succeeds. Does anyone know why compiler is behaving
this way? How to make it build correctly on WinXP? Tag: True Image Tag: 29682
Windows Vista 5308 64bit
Hi I installed Windows Vista 5308 Beta 64bit on my Acer 5002 WLMi. It took a
massive 10GB hard disk space. The first window I got after running it had a
'Not Responding' message! Windows Vista has an amazing look with a lot of
softwares pre installed. So you don't have to install softwares such as
Windows Defender later on. I tried installing the drivers I installed for
Windows XP X64. The AC97 driver got installed perfectly. The SIS VGA driver
was giving some repeated errors during installation but still the files and
drivers were installed. Sadly, the SIS VGA (SIS M760GX) is highly unstable on
vista. My 802.11b/g driver failed to install.
Has anyone of you tried installing Windows Vista? Please let me know your
experience.

Memory allocation on 64 bits platform...
What is the correct procedure to configure 6GB of memory allocation on
64bits plataform?
We are using ...
* Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition 64 bits (two nodes cluster)
* SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition 64 bits (active/active)
* Two Proliants 585 (4 way dual core Opteron processors, 8 gb RAM)
Do I need to configure AWE? How does it work on 64bits platform?
Thanks a lot. Tag: True Image Tag: 29675
Whats happened to the web based x64 newsgroup?
This was located here:
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general&lang=en&cr=US
and its not there anymore. Tag: True Image Tag: 29658
