    - How can I get Windows x64? Hi there. I'm building a new PC using an AMD 4400+ Dual Core processor, which uses a 64 bit architecture. I want to install Windows x64 Professional on it to get the best performance out of my system. According to this website, it seems the only way to get the x64 version of Windows is when purchasing a new PC? Does anyone know of another way to get it?     - USB harddisk clogs I have a Toshiba 40GB 4200rpm harddisk connected externally via USB 2.0. Sometimes when writing a medium-sized file to it (say, 150MB) the write happened at too high a speed. That sounds promising, but it isn't :) Usually the write is a copy from my internal harddisk to the USB harddisk. The internal harddisk is obviously a magnitude faster, and it seems to me the write happens at the speed of the internal harddisk. Between 50 and 70 MB per second. The problem is that the OS reports the write as being done, but the USB disk is still physically writing out the file. I think what happens is that some kind of (very large) write cache is being filled up and eventually flushed as it's no longer being appended to. On it's own, this is not that big a problem. The problem with this "cache" is that so long as this "cache" is being flushed after the file copy has been completed, every and all access to the USB disk is being blocked (postponed to when the "cache flush" is complete, to be exact). Now, I know harddisks can have an OS-level write cache in Windows, but I also know that for USB Mass Storage devices, this cache is disabled by default. I also know that I didn't touch that setting (witnessed by the fact that the drive's policy is set to "Optimize for quick removal", so no OS-level write cache, iinm).     - Pop Up Folder Descriptions in Explorer I'm trying to load a bunch of my CD on to my computer for use with a MP3 player. I load the CD's OK. But when I go into Windows Explorer and put the cursor over the file my all is get is "MP3 File" and "3.23mb". If I load the same CD on my other computer with XP Pro (32 Bit), when I put the cursor on the file I get, Song Title, Artist, Album Name, Track Number, Size, Year. I have tried the same software on both computer, iTunes 6.0.1 and Exact Audio Copy with LAME. The file are fine just not all the information is there on the x64 OS machine. I figure if I'm going to load all these CD's I might as well have all the text information avaliable. So what do I need to do to get the description to appear ??     - XP 64 freezes shortly after "loading preferences" I'm trying to confirm that my ultra-mega Win-XP 64-bit PC; 1. GigaByte 955-Royale 64-bit motherboard 2. 3.24 GHz 64-bit Intel dual-core Pentium-D 3. Maxtor 300 Gb SATA hard drive 4. 1 Gb Kingston DDR RAM stick 5. ATI XL-800 64-bit AGP card 6. 27" Viewsonic HDTV monitor 7. Logitech Optical / Cordless mouse / keyboard 8. Logitech 280-watt 5.1 Dolby THX (OK, now I'm just bragging!) has a virus-related problem and is not suffering from a hardware-related failure. The system has been running fine since its birth in mid-July 2005. The PC freezes after I boot-up Win-XP 64-bit; a few seconds after my apps (Avast 64-bit AV, MS-Outlook 2003, etc.) begin to pre-load. I tried to repair Windows with the CD, but the installation's repair process freezes-up during the portion that says "Windows will finish installing in 37 minutes." I ran check CHKDSK /R (twice) from the CD's recovery console: All was well. I figured if there was a memory (stick) issue, it might have been reported. I also figured, if the memory-stick was defective, the PC would have froze during the 90-120 minute CHKDSK /R process; but it didn't. Based upon those observations, I'm thinking a stinking virus(that Avast didn't catch)!!! The ultimate question is; "Where is the 64-bit bootable CD that scans my BIOS and hard drive without my potentially corrupt Win-XP 64-bit OS being booted??? After-all; isn't that the most effective way to scan; without the primary (potentially infected) OS being booted??? If this is not (yet) an FAQ, I'm sure it soon will be!!! I'd like to hear your thoughts (and reccomendations). Meanwhile, I'll be trying "system restore" after I read the few articles written about some of the caveats. Thanx!     - how to "Inject" a CD via right-click on drive ? I can right-click on the drive letter and EJECT, but to inject I have to go thru MANAGE- Removable Storage - Libraries and THEN right-click - inject. As my seat is often not near the PC I'm using , anyway to simplify this so that I can right-click on drive and under EJECT have INJECT as an option ? And , come to think of it , why is this NOT an option by default - like Eject is ??     - 32-bit boot In keeping with many users of XP-64 Pro I need to be able to boot a 32-bit system to run certain apps. 1) Is it possible to boot XP-64 into 32-bit mode? If so, I have been unable to find any instructions, so a pointer would help. 2) If not, then presumably one needs to install a 32-bit o/s, eg. XP, and set up dual boot. Please confirm. System: nForce chip set SATA 150 AMD 64x2 2gb DDR2 PCIx Mobo XP x64 (all patches installed to date) IE will work for a few seconds then reboots the system, comes back after rebooting with an error about a missing or miss-behaving DLL. Event entries do not help, do not appear to be associated with error (DLL). If I do not run IE, the system is stable. Need ideas on cause / cure, have searched everywhere but I seem to be the only one having this problem. As such, I need to know how do I determine which DLL is missing or miss-behaving.     - How to recover efi nvram entry for Windows ? Hi! I accidentally deleted efi nvram entry for Windows at our Itanium server. So I cannot load Windows 2003 server anymore. I cannot restore this entry by utility nvrboot.efi because there is no file BootNNNN in folder \EFI\Microsoft\WINNT50 on this machine (maybe someone deleted it earlier). Unfortunately nvrboot.efi doesn't allow to create simple _default_ efi nvram entry for Windows (unlike, for instance, Windows setup, which can do it during installation). And I cannot use file BootNNNN taken from other similar machine, because it contains other diskâ??s(or partitionâ??s) ID (something starting from â??Sigâ?¦â?? - as it appears in EFI shell). Itâ??s easy to see this ID on the problem machine (from EFI shell), but I cannot change it in BootNNNN (taken from another machine), because this file has non-text format !!! This machine is multi-booting (I have multiple versions of Linux installed on this machine), so I cannot afford to lose existing Linux's data on efi system partition - so, please, donâ??t even propose to reformat efi partition, reinstall windows, or something of that kind. I tried to boot to Recovery Console mode of Windows CD, but there are not any useful commands to create *default* efi nvram entry for Windows !!!! Absolutely insane recovery possibilities from M$ !!! - I DID NOT LOSE ANY UNIQUE DATA - I JUST WANT TO REPAIR THIS DAMN _DEFAULT_ ENTRY FOR THIS MACHINE.     - Setting affinity on dual core processor... Is there a way to permanently set affinity for a program on a dual core processor? I have AMD 64 x2 4200+ running Win XP Pro x64. I know you can go into task manager, right click process and select 'set affinity', but it only works for that time. When you reboot, it's back to dual.     - Installers. 16 bit, 32 bit I am quite new to 64 bit computing as I have used it for 2 days. I don't understand the variation on what will install and what will not. My IntelliPoint and IntelliType will not install but I suppose they have drivers which aren't 64 bit. My MSWorks installs about halfway and crashes but some programs work. My Kyodai Mahjong and Hardwood Solitare work fine. Nero 6 works fine. PaintShop Pro works fine. Is there some rhyme or reason to this? Please inform this new 64bit kid! If you didn't see it in one of the Apple/ forums, you can now request 64 bit drivers that will enable iTunes to burn CDs (the one feature of iTunes that did not work on XP x64). Gear Software makes the drivers for Apple, if you send an email to support@gearsoftware.com and say something like: "Can you please send me the 64 bit drivers so I can burn CD's with iTunes. I have a WIndows XP x64 system, and I am running on Intel EMT64 hardware." they will email them to you. They give you an install package.     - Problems Joining the Domain I have a Server 2003 Release2 X 64 standard edition. I have been trying for the past week to join the domain (windows 2003 32bit) and I keep getting a RPC error when I try to join the domain. This is the first X64 server on the network. It has all patches installed. My Server has two AMD X2 processors, and 4 GB of RAM. Has anyone else had any problems related to this? I downloaded the trial edition a few day ago. However, upon trying to
activate it will not accep the key MS gave me. Is the trial good for 180 days
as it says or is it only 14 days?

Go through the same steps again download the software, and use the new key
thats sent to you in the e-mail. You don't have download the trial, all you
need is the new product key. No, the Windows XP Professional x64 Trial 120
days, Windows Server 2003 x64 Trials are a 180 days.

You may be confusing Activation with the Trial lifespan.
You need to Activate within 14 days to gain continued use, this also applies
to the full product.
Additionally the Trial has a life of 180 days,

I think you can also activate by phone, even after 14 days, which might
clear things up.
