DVD drive not working anymore, how to fix it ?
Hello,
I deleted some drivers, which were reported in event log to be not loaded
because of compatibility problems, however it now turns out they were needed
after all !
Result: DVD drive not working anymore ?!
I have deinstalled Nero software to help fix the problem.
There are now two problems remaining it seems:

Bit the bullet-now what?
Well, I did it. Ordered a 15" 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro with the
big hard drive this morning. If it isn't here by my birthday I'll pull
out my printed copy of the order to look at while I blow out the candles.
So now the question is: By which rituals and through how much sacrifice
do I appease the Redmond gods for this transgression sufficiently to set
this thing up with its native OS and 64-bit Vista in a dual-boot config,
and maybe a 32-bit version to run in a virtual machine for when I have
real work to do? That sounds like the best option to me right now. I'm
not so much interested in the nuts and bolts at this point as I am in
how many licenses/copies I have to buy and from whom. From what I've
read here I'm figuring I'll need two-one each for the 64-bit and 32-bit
versions. Could I get either or both via download, or will brick and
mortar be part of the equation?
Mind you, I'm not here to defend the logic of any of this. I went
through all that when I didn't get the pony I asked for as a little boy.
Now, at long last, I'm getting even. I AM going to get what I want,
and no one's going to deprive me of it! Tag: How to get rid of Trend Micro, House Call ? Tag: 48321

Was it wrong to delete these drivers ?
Are these drivers maybe loaded for 32 bit windows ? like Windows on Windows
?
Or is some services that has been disabled the cause of the problems ?
Or maybe a recent windows update ?
A fine mess.

X64 and Itunes
Has anyone else had a problem with ITUNES and X64? I installed it with no
problem, it will see the IPOD, but will not synchronize to it. No errors,
it just won't write any files.
USB finds it as a storage device, and 32bit XP on the same computer works
fine.

mscep.dll not working on x64
Trying to use the Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP) Add-on for
Certificate Services, as provided in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit,
and also here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9f306763-d036-41d8-8860-1636411b2d01&displaylang=en
Doesn't seem to work on x64. Assuming it's a 32-bit dll, I tried running
with "Enable32BitAppOnWin64" - with no success. It just shuts down the
application pool and throws a "Service Unavailable" message (and logs a few
W3SVC Event 1039's to the System log).
Is there an x64 version of this dll floating around somewhere? Or something
else I can try to get it to run under WOW64?

Epson IEEE 1394 & Vista Ultimate x64 NO support
Just had a intresting e-mail dong dong with Epson on IEEE 1394 printer
drivers for R800 & R2400 printers over Firewire drivers under Vista Ultimate

"In answer to your e-mail, the Firewire ports on the printer and scanner are
currently redundant in regards to use with Windows Vista. This is because
Windows vista its self does not have full Firewire support. Therefore EPSON
does not have any plans to support the use of Firewire on Windows Vista."

Help deciding what OS to use
Hello
I am purchasing a new Intel Core 2 Duo machine 2.4ghz machine.
What operating system should I install on it (except Vista):
Windows XP 32 or 64?
Since as I read the Core2Duo is 64bit machine, isn't it better to have the
OS run in 64 bit?
However, all my applications are 32 bit...so again what I gain from win64 I
lose for the 32bits applications.
Please advise!

our backup server has windows server 2003 64 bit sp2 set to receive security

manager the IDE motherboard driver is ok but the DVD driver has a yellow
check "windows couldnt load this device, the driver may be corrupt or
missing) refreshing the driver, uninstalling and reinstalling it, removing
the IDE cable from it, rebooting several times and reconnecting it gave the
same result, windows update cant find a better driver than the corrupt one!

Startup
I have a new laptop (HP dv9000 with Intel Centrino Duo x64 2.0 with 2 GB
RAM, 512MB nVidia Video, 200 GB drive). I'm running Vista Ultimate. This was
suppose to be my 'dream machine'. I really looked forward to the day when I
finally got to bring it home.
I have MS Office 2007 and Zune software installed, but that's basically it.
I used offline files in the past (in the first few weeks I had the laptop)
to sync a network drive which contained all my media files. After starting
my laptop I would basically have to walk away for an hour while it ran at
100%. Using ProcMon I discovered it was the offline files that caused my CPU
to run so hard and have since disabled the service. However, I still have to
wait anywhere between 10 - 15 minutes before my laptop really becomes usable
after booting up. I even have to wait sometimes 5 minutes or more when
shutting down for the process to complete.
What's with all the wait time? I can't figure out all these services that
run that are suppose to make my computing experience better. I have several
svchost processes that run. One of these takes up 140 MB of memory alone.
When it comes to performance, why can't I have one control panel that allows
me to choose which services I want to run that may effect the performance of
my machine? I feel like I need to take a 10-week Microsoft course to learn
what is necessary to configure my laptop.

Vista reactivation required after Microsoft Update optional update
As Felix reported a few days ago, there is an optional update on Microsoft
Update that requires reactivation of Vista after the update is installed. I
did two updates today and discovered that my activation status had changed
from Activated to "Three days remaining....".
The updates today were:
NVIDIA Corporation - Storage - NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA Controller
KB936824 (the iPod update)
Since the system drive figures very importantly in the hardware hash that is
used to calculate when reactivation is required, my bet would be that the
NVIDIA update would cause reactivation because it is a change involving the
hard drive controller. (note: my update history shows this update was
installed successfully twice and that does not make a lot of sense either.)
But my assumption means nothing and maybe it was the iPod update. Hardware
is involved there too.
In any case, be aware that an optional update is on the server that will
require you to use phone activation to reactivate Vista following
installation of the update. Internet activation will not be accepted. Tag: How to get rid of Trend Micro, House Call ? Tag: 48205

Howdy, My goal is to print from a win xp 64-bit comp, (connected via wireless

GetOpenFileName failed after Wow64DisableWow64FsRedirection
Hi,
I have a 32-bit application which calls Wow64DisableWow64FsRedirection
first, then call GetOpenFileName to show a common file dialog, and
GetOpenFileName fails on 64-bit Vista (RTM). If I remove the call to
Wow64DisableWow64FsRedirection, GetOpenFileName shows file open dialog fine,
but system32 was redirected syswow64 folder.
Does there anybody know how to turn off Wow64 file redirection on common
file dialogs for 32-bit applications?
Thanks. Tag: How to get rid of Trend Micro, House Call ? Tag: 48188

Upgrade evaluation version of 64 bit windows...
Hi:
I downloaded and installed the evaluation version of 64 bit windows xp.
But, now I need to upgrade the license to the real thing. Do I need to
completely reinstall the product using a retail cd or is there somewhere I
can enter the valid license key without doing a complete reinstall? Right
now I can't find any place to do a license upgrade of any kind.

Modem for Vista 64
Back many weeks ago I asked about Vista 64 compatible modems, couldn't
find any drivers for my ancient Hayes WinModem. I looked at
Microsoft's compatibility list but found the pickings were very thin.
I finally admitted defeat and installed my USR Sportster external which
was my absolute last choice for two reasons, I wanted an internal modem
(no more power outlets!) and I use NetZero as a backup which doesn't
work well with USR modems* but.... I didn't want to buy something that
might or might not work so the USR is installed.
The reason for this post is to praise USR, my Sportster is a very old
one and it's NOT on MSFTs compatibility list nor would Vista 64 install
it using included drivers so I went to USR's site and found Vista 32
and Vista 64 drivers for a huge number of old, obsolete USR modems.
The downloaded driver worked perfectly and all is well.
So Kudos to USR, they're doing what we wish ALL manufacturers would do,
supporting legacy hardware!
*NetZero/Juno acknowledges the incompatibility problem with USR modems
which causes low speed connections and, last I heard, have no intention
of doing anything about it. Tag: How to get rid of Trend Micro, House Call ? Tag: 48152

New R2 server - cannot load print drivers
Hi
We have a new W2003 R2 server on our small W2003 SP2 lan.
I cannot load any x64 print drivers. I have also tried the suggestion on a
blog to use the ntprint.inf, but that did not work.
I cannot load the x64 on the non R2 servers, or on the R2 server.
I CAN set up an additional TCP/IP port and then the driver for that on the
R2, but that means I have two printers loaded with different drivers using
one IP address.
Is there any way i can just load the x64 drivers on the X64 box, while the
same printer is loaded for 32bit on the W2003 32bit boxes?
TIA

One Week later.......so far no more BSOD
I reverted back to the original Nvidia video drivers that vista 64 installed
for my system
I am now using Version : 7.15.10.9746 of the NVIDIA driver dated :
22/08/2006. I have been running with this driver for a week now with NO
problems.......only time will tell.
My wife has not had a blue screen when she logs off.
I now believe the other Nvidia video drivers were causing memory corruption.
I was also having a problem with the AVG control center shutting down when
loading the desktop.
This problem seem to be corrected too.
I have retraced the steps I used to create a blue screen Logging off then
Logging my wife on & off many times since changing the video drivers back to
the original
I may have solved my problem........only time will tell. Tag: How to get rid of Trend Micro, House Call ? Tag: 48049

I have same issue.
Hi here is my detailed report:
We are the Australian and New Zealand distributors for Stata
(Serial number: 81990511079) . A customer (*1990516216-N54 (52
Windows, 2 Windows 64)) rang to say that he is having trouble with
Stata 9 , the 64 bit version : Use XP Windows 64 Pro fully patched.
Computer has 4 Gb of RAM and is dual core. Stata's memory is set at 2
Gb or 1 Gb makes no difference.
The Problem:
Turns computer on and runs Stata, not a problem.
Turns computer on and loads Stata (Stata idle - not running any
command) and starts up MS Word.
Problem - Word runs fine.
But when you type into the command window in STATA it lags. ie you can
type faster than the characters appear on the screen.
When word 2003 is closed you can now type at normal speed in the STATA
command window.
Open word, STATA slows down, close word STATA, speeds up etc.... So if
the user is happy to close MSWord 2003 when they want to use STATA no
problems.
BUT of course as MSWord is so useful ie it has tables that the user
must have etc... the user tells me they must have word open at the
same time. Which is reasonable.
I may try to install Open Office, or some alternate, as the user may
be able to use Open Office's word processor as a substitute, as it can
handle tables etc.... But I do not know how it will work in a 64 Bit
version of Windows XP pro.
We tried MS Word pad and that worked ok, ie did not cause STATA to
slow down, but as it does not handle tables it is not a satisfactory
work around.
Also when word 2003 was open one more effect was observed.
When you hold down the left or right mouse button and for example try
to drag an icon around on the desktop the mouse pointer lags. ie the
Operating system is giving it fewer time slices, I assume.
If you do not hold down the left or right mouse button the mouse
pointer moves around the desktop at normal speed, and the mouse can
execute a double click, for example to run a program normally.
Strange.
As soon as word is closed this strange behavior stops, as soon as it
is opened again it starts.
Summary:
It seems something about the 32bit version of word 2003 causes these
problems:
1.) STATA command window typing lagging (also in DO editor, and
elsewhere ie highlighting sections of the output/ results screen/
window)
2.) Right or left mouse holding lagging. ie right or left click and
hold over an icon on the desktop and try to drag it around lags.
I assume: Lagging means the CPU is not giving enough time slices to
the processes concerned.
Close word problem goes away.
Discussion points: We are of course running the 32 bit version of word
2003 in a 64 Bit Operating system.
Have tested Excel 2003 / Power Point 2003 / Internet Explorer / SPSS
no problems. 32 Bit version no 14.
Only word seems to cause any problems. Tag: How to get rid of Trend Micro, House Call ? Tag: 48021
