JAVA RE 5.0 update 6 for x64 is out
Sun has just released its update 6 for Java.
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
Versions for x86 and x64 are available for download.
Still no support for browsers on x64 platforms!
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/system-configurations.html
x86 version is still useful for IE 32-bit.

Westell modem
Have been dual booting XP Pro and XP 64 PRo since 64 was released with the
usual driver problems but able to use it. Now I have updated to Version DSL
and their westell modem is not compatible. Have had no luck finding drivers.
Anyone found a work around or know of a free Dialup ISP? Any assistance will

DVD/CDROM Driver won't load
I installed x64 last night with no problems, installed Office 2003, Koday
EasyShare, and then out of nowhere I can't access my DVD-ROM or DVD-RW.
Device Manager says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this
hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
I've done all the normal things I can think of, uninstalling, reinstalling,
deleting the actual driver files and reinstalling.

I installed x64 on a New machine. Got around the driver problems for the

tried to load the disc without the "compat mode" but all I get is a phone

The one thing that makes me crash...
...in 64 bit, is the same thing that crashes me in 32 bit. It's playing
music in the background while working in other apps. I usually have many
things running, often all day without a reboot... InDesign, Photoshop,
Acrobat, IE, Outlook... whatever. I can run stable all day long doing lots
of photo work, distilling, network access, FTPing large files,
downloading... I also like to run some music, usually using Media Player. If
I do so, sooner or later I'll get a ga-ga-ga-ga-ga-ga stuttering sound and a
blue screen, say when I'm printing or distilling. It doesn't happen often,
but I can sense it coming sometimes. Once, maybe twice a day, if I'm using
MP in the background. Otherwise I'm perfectly stable. I've had the same
results in XP Pro.
So what is it about media player that freaks out when I'm doing something
else? It seems to happen when resources are low and memory leaking. Is there
a good way to avoid this rare but annoying behavior? Does playing an MP3 put
a strain on the system... is it a bug... should I be using Winamp instead?
Just curious... Tag: Standby mode Tag: 21465
Why I've switched to x64
After booting up in XP SP2 and clicking on my D Drive or my attached
firewire drive, they would take like 12 seconds to open up.
Now in x64 on the same computer, when I boot and click on those drives,
they open up instantly. (It's the only factor that made me switch).
Anyone know the reason for the difference?

Problem with reinstalling x64 and XP two hard disks: Help needed
Hi Folks - Basically very confused right now. I have the following setup:
AMD +4800
two SATA Hard drives
A8N_SLI Deluxe MB
I had x64 and XP installed successfully, one on each drive. Unfortunately
due to something I've done, I now have only XP installed on one Hard disk.
I'm trying to reinstall x64 on the second hard disk but I get the following
messages when I setup using the x64 CD:
95608 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
E: Partition1 [NTFS] 95612 MB < 78514 Free>

C: Partition1 [New (Raw)] 238465 MB ( 238464 MB Free)
Unpartitioned space 8 MB
*****
I hit 'install on c: which is the 'empty' HD I want to re-install x64 on and
I end up with the following:
To install Windows on the partition you selected,
Setup must write some startup files to the following disk:
95608 MB Disk 0 at Id on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
However, this disk does not contain a Windows-compatible partition
******
It goes on to say that it wants me to create a windows partition on this E:
volume which has, of course my Windows XP Pro already installed. Not wanting
to completely erase the XP Pro on E: is there any way to get around this and
re-install Windows x64 on the C: drive (Volume, whatever)? or any way to
successully re-install it? and keep XP Pro (and all my files)
I've tried everything I can think of including altering the boot.ini, but to
no avail. Is it completely necessary to start all over, reformat both drives?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

9 in 1 Media card reader?
I have a client who went with a x64 system from my recommendation (Brave!)
and so far so good. I was worried about a Laserjet driver, but the LJ 5000
GN printer they have is supported natively by x64. Whew.
So now, their digicam software/driver is not compatible, and they prefer a

Anyone try, or know of a Half Height Internal or External USB card reader

That way, they can read their CF/SM/MS/XD/MMS/ABC/DoReMe/FUD cards from

SQL 2005 64bits with 32 bits client application
Hello,
We want to add to our network a new SQL server 2005. Here are the
characteristics of this new server should has:
-Windows 2003 64 bits
-SQL server 2005 64 bits
-NET FrameWork 2.0 64 bits
-The network is at 1 Gbits/s
The stations are in Windows XP 32 bits. Some stations are still with Windows
2000. Framework 1.1 of NET 32 bits is also installed. A client application
developed with Visual Studio 2003 with FrameWork 1.1 is installed on each
station. At present, the application communicates with a SQL 2000 server
installed on a Windows 2000 server. If I connect my application towards my
new server, will I have modifications to make to my application or all
should function normally?
Hope that my question is clear

Here's a silly question...
I'm aware that the 64-bit version of XP was built on top of the 2003+SP1
code base rather than XP+SP2, thus there is no service pack (yet) for XP x64
called "SP2"...or SP1 for that matter, as it's built-in...
But is there a service pack for the 64-bit version of 2003 itself? Or was
it also built from the (32-bit) 2003+SP1 code base?
I'm looking at my MSDN subscription DVDs, and the labels dosn't exactly make
it glaringly obvious...I have a 2003 DVD dating from June and another from
November--the only difference, according to the label, is the addition of
SP1 to the 32-bit version of 2003. But if the service pack for the 32-bit
version of 2003 wasn't on the June DVD, then I'm thinking surely that this
x64 image of 2003 dating from June doesn't have it either?
(this is a Monday morning question...I'm easily confused right now) ;-) Tag: Standby mode Tag: 21287
