I have a notification icon in my taskbar that informs me that "support for
Windows XP SP1 ends October 10, 2006" The "little blue star" icon. Right
clicking on it shows several options, Including the one that asks to "Obtain
XP Sevice Pack 2" I want this icon removed and taken of my system that I
built myself from the motherboard on up. I do not wish to use XP Service Pack
2 and never will. I found that it was a piece of junk that caused so many
problems it made it impossible to use the Internet, so I took it off my
machine. I paid good money to buy the Windows XP Professional operating
system when I built this system from scratch. Yet, when I try to obtain email
support for it using my PID , I am told I should contact my computer vender.
That means I should contact myself. How ridiculous!!! If anyone has had
problems with this and/or knows how to get it off my system, I would
appreciate the help. Even though I have installed SUSE Linux as a bootable
option on this machine, I still need to use Windows XP for games and until my
transition to Linux is complete.

Since SP 2 is built in to x64 Edition from the get-go, it is probable you
are in the wrong news group. This group focusses on Windows XP Professional
x64 Edition...

OOPS - SP1 built in. SP2 for x64 Edition is in beta. I've never seen the
icon you describe, but then I've never has a problem with SP2 on the 32 bit
side either...

You have stumbled in the wrong newsgroup. This one is for Windows x64. SP1
for x32 will reach it's end of Support Lifecycle indeed at that date, so
it's better for you to upgrade anyway, to keep your system safe (unless
it's an offline machine of course).

Just another Microsoft Hater. Never ceases to amaze me. She's gone to the
XP ng, but let's break it down. It's Sunday morning and I'm bored.

SP2 made it impossible to use the Internet. That's news to me. Could it be
she's a moron and not able to configure her security?

Could that be because she IS the vendor, because...well...she did build her
own system? And obviously she installed the OEM version of XP. But this is
also MS's fault. (They also are responsible for global warming by the way.)
If we only had hardware like Apple where you had to buy their overpriced
crap, all would be right in the world. Not quite sure how we could twist
that argument to support Linux, however, but I'm sure she would give it a
valiant effort.

> That means I should contact myself. How ridiculous!!!

Absolutely! How dare they expect me to know anything about computers if I'm
going to build my own! The audacity!

Good luck with that Linux thing. No configuration issues there for sure.
Just install and work in bliss until the end of time. Nirvana in a box.

Well, this was a waste of time. Seems that there is no one here of
importance. Just another group of losers. Try contributing something to
humanity sometime, it would make you feel better.

It's simple: install SP2 as well, until your done with your transition. But
I have the vague feeling you are using an illegal XP with a blacklisted
number, because you can't install SP2, and hence are stuck to your SP1 :-)

Hey, Matilda.
Wait up!
Please do not offend my buddies.
You have definitely stumbled into the wrong newsgroup.
Therefore, you will not get your answers here.
Or would you expect to receive mahometan religion answers in a Christian
group?.

Matilda;
You posted in the wrong newsgroup.
This newsgroup is for the 64 bit version and you clearly have the 32 bit
version.
Post in the "windowsupdate" newsgroup or even one of several Windows XP
newsgroups.
Then it is probable you will get an answer since you will be posting where
the experts hang out.
But for now, you are asking in the wrong operating system newsgroup.

And yes, it may have been a waste of time for you.
That is normal when going to the wrong place as you did.

Q5: How do I disable the message after I have viewed it?

.

Also, you can temporarily disable Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications.
To do this, right-click the Notifier icon in the notification area, click
Change Notifications Settings, and then follow the prompts. The notification
messages will be disabled until a new release of the Notification Update.
