Hi,

I've just bought an Acer Ferrari 4005 that comes pre-installed with x64.

1. I'd like to dual boot the machine.

I understand that I'll need to reformat the drive, as x64 should be
installed on a different partition *after* installing regular Win XP.

Installation media was not provided. In the root of C:/ there are /i386 and
/amd64 folders. Can I make these into bootable CDs/DVDs or can I download
them from somewhere?

Alternatively, can I use the trial download of x64 with my current x64
product key? Where can I find a trial download of the regular Win XP, and can
I use the same x64 product key with it?

2. I'd like to use Norton Ghost.

The main reason for this reinstallation is because I want to run Norton
Ghost. Will version 9 be able to create proper images of the x64 partition
when running from regular Win XP?

I'd rather not have to go back to Acer for this ;)

Thanks,
Lee.

The email from Microsoft that links you to the trial download has a key.

Since your OEM is legit, you should provide for recovering it.
Look in the Acer guide - you'll probably find "Acer eRecovery."

In the Ferrari 4000 book, it's on page 40 - burn recovery CDs.

As of last summer, Symantec had this to say:
"Current consumer products have not been tested with 64-bit processors."
Try Acronis or something else if Norton doesn't work?

The manual describes creating the default factory image only (which I've
done). I didn't think it would help me with setting the laptop up for dual
booting but more to restore the laptop to the state I was trying to get away
from :)

Coupled with the fact that the laptop came preinstalled with an application
to reset the desktop wallpaper to the bright and cluttered ferrari calendar
on reboot (and who knows what else) and FAT32 partitions instead of NTFS, I
felt that it would be better to do a clean install (besides, I like getting
my hands dirty and knowing what goes into my laptop).

I was hoping to be able to use the key on the sticker under the laptop for
both x86 and x64 versions, then my problem would simply be getting the media.
I've since read up more, and realised that upgrading the trial x64 install
was not the simple matter of entering a proper key, but a repair.

I would appreciate suggestions for the best way to dual boot my machine
without unnecessary expenses.

PS: I've since discovered, after converting both FAT32 partitions to NTFS,
that the pre-loaded harddisk imaging software only runs on FAT32 partitions -
FWIW.

Thanks for pointing out the possible problem with Norton! Acronis seems to be
getting good reviews, I will look into it.

Norton Ghost makes perfectly good images when run from the x32 system.
You will need to buy a Windows XP 32-bit system to get a valid key. You
cannot use the x64 key on whatever you install
There is really no problem installing x86 second. If you can partition your
drive. You just have to save two files first or restore them from the x64
CD. Easier than the hassle of reinstalling x64 if you have spent any time
installing drivers, programs etc.

I honestly have to say, Acer needs slap in the face for being so cheap. A
basic CD with x64 on it shouldn't be a problem for them, especially after
selling your soul to buy one of their laptops.

Legally, the OEM has met it's contractual obligation to Microsoft
by providing a means of returning the PC to its ex-factory state,
whether it's a Recovery CD or a Recovery Partition. They are not
legally obliged to provide a true installation CD as part of the sale.
Reputable, customer-service aware OEMs, like Dell and Gateway, do
provide a full OEM installation CD, that does permit custom
installations and repairs. Many uncaring OEMs, such as Compaq, HP, and
Sony, however, in an effort to save pennies and reduce their support
costs by having to hire support people that can only say "Boot from the
Recovery CD to return your PC to its original condition," provide only a
CD bearing a disk image of the hard drive as it left the factory. These
Recovery/Restore CDs cannot perform normal installations, nor can they
be used to do any sort of customizations.

Essentially, it boils down to "You get what you pay for."

Three images works for me - initial settled-down fully updated,
another one advanced from there but that's actually bad, and
a third one after I've reverted to the first and moved on from there.

Where to keep them? I would think John Barnes would be better
than myself at assisting you with suggestions for that, and for
partitioning for dual boot. Why not respond to him and see?

I have the same problem with my brand new Sony Vaio laptop, it's cluttered
up with a shamefull amount of crap, they system runs like a total dog.

A sad day, when you have to borrow CDR copies of XP Pro for your brand new
laptop, because

a) Sony are too tight to provide media.
b) load the system with so much useless crap, most of which does not
cleanly uninstall.

I complained to Sony, to try and get a proper OEM media disk, but they
refused point blank, saying I should love my 128 day trial version of
Norton crapworks, and Sony Mediabullshit Manager etc etc etc...

I think it should be changed, System recovery stuff separate from Operating
system disk. But its simply to thwart piracy, since OEM versions of Windows
are tied to the hardware they are purchased with they believe users will
just use there OEM version on a new machine.

I agree with Colin. The technicians do not know anything. They just input
problems into the machine and read answers like most of the software
knowledge bases. Since they are unable to think and reason, they have to
have a KNOWN state for the answers to have any meaning.
