I've installed Vista Ultimate 64bit a few times and usually my onboard
realtek souncard has worked. But now that I'm wanting to keep the install
that I have, no sound. I have a HP Pavilion a1450n computer. HP only has
soundcard drivers for the 32bit version of Vista and the realtek drivers
won't install.

If I select the realtek soundcard from device manager I get the BSOD (stop
message). Using the drivers from realtek does no good either. I have 3
soundcards, 2 M-Audio cards, and none work. Does anyone have any
suggestions? I've tried every driver imaginable with no luck. I've thought
of reformatting and starting over thinking since it worked at one point
maybe I have a bad install. Thanks for any suggestions.

Which Realtek sound drivers have you downloaded?

Did you download the Realtek ALC 883 HD software? Or did
you download the AC'97 software?

You should be downloading and installing the ALC 883 HD
software found at:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

The files from RealTek have both 32-bit and 64-bit drivers.

Hi, Poppa.

My mobo has the Realtek ALC8xx onboard. And I've installed Vista Ultimate
x64 several times, both during beta and RTM. In early betas (with a prior
mobo and Realtek ALC850), drivers were a problem. Visits to the Realtek
site left me only partially happy. But since late beta (RC1?), installation
is simple.

Vista Setup does not install the Realtek drivers automatically, so at first
there is no sound. But a visit to Windows Update finds the drivers
available and all it takes is a click to download and install them. Then
there is sound. Including a Mixer that will let me adjust sounds in
Quicken, for example, to a different volume than in WMP.

I'm no gamer or audiophile, so the basic sound is fine for me. I don't need
no steenkin' drivers. ;^}

Theo, I've tried the drivers there but they don't work. They install and I
restart but no go. As I said earlier I think I have a bad install. I may try
reformatting my drive and starting all over. Thanks for the reply.

RC, what's the URL and I'll try it. Nothing else had worked. I've done all
the updating I can find to do. And as I said earlier, on other installs the
sound worked but on this one it didn't. I've been using Vista since RC1.
Thanks.

I reformatted and reinstalled the drivers with no luck. This is ridiculous.
I've installed all drivers suggested in this newsgroup and lots of others
with no luck. I will buy another soundcard I think. I have an audigy
soundcard but can't find the damn thing.

After you install Windows and have an Internet connection, click on
Start A;; programs Windows Update View Available Updates.
Do this even if the dialogue box first says Windows is up to date. The
audio drivers should be offered.

If they are not, close out and do something else for a while and check
back later.

Let us know.

Tom and everyone, thanks for the replies. I found the problem. I had a PCI
M-Audio soundcard installed in the computer and finally realized it was
probably an interrupt problem (stop error & BSOD). I took out the card and
as soon as I restarted, the driver for my Realtek soundcard installed by
itself. User error as usual. Thanks again.

Gents,

Will someone please tell me what I need to get full 7.1 (eight discrete
channels) from the spdif mini-stereo ports to either coax or toslink ?

And any suggested settings for premium sound would also be greatly
appreciated...

It is the 2 port spdif/880v5317 on Vista Ultimate and Alienware.

Thanks in Advance!
