Charlie, how does XP Pro SP2 see 4GB of ram on System Properties/General tab
versus XP Pro x64?

I am beta testing Vista x86 and x64 on my XP Pro x64 box. Vista x86 is only
reporting 3GB of ram on the System Properties/General tab while the x64
systems are reporting 4GB.

I have never run XP 32-bit on a box with 4GB of ram so I don't know if this
is expected x86 behavior or not.

No, who were you asking questions of? Surely you dn't mean me, with that
spelling. :)

I've never had a box with 4 GB of RAM. Biggest I've got is my SBS 2k3 box,
with 3 GB. I know there _are_ some BIOS issues on some boxes with 4GB, but I
don't remember the details. Try googling on BIOS and 4GB -- the issue is that
the extra RAM is reserved by various option ROMs.

Hi,

Sorry to interfer in your post, but maybe I could be of some help to you.

Please try this :

Modify your Boot.ini system file (hidden) for the Windows XP to :

WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Vista (or something like that, I don't have
Vista)" /fastdetect /3GB /USERVA=3030

Save the file and reboot to Windows, the task manager will report a higher
physical memory value. Leave the disk entries intact, just change the end of
the string.

Don't change :

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

Just add :

/fastdetect /3GB /USERVA=3030

For example : multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows
Vista" /fastdetect /3GB /USERVA=3030

Unsure it will work with Vista x86, but it seems to work with Windows XP
32-bit.

Regards,

Jean-Baptiste

Hello Colin,
It's the PAE kernel in XPSP2 and in X64 that allows to see all 4 gig of RAM.
Check out this article that talks about this.
888137 The amount of RAM reported by the System Properties dialog box and
the
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=888137

However this should be working in Windows Vista.

I can see 4GB in Vx64 but only 3 in Vx86. Thanks for the link. I read it a
few days ago. I tried the /PAE switch on the Vista x86 line in boot.ini but
saw no change in behavior.

I reported it as a Vista bug because I didn't know from XP experience what I
should see in Vista x86. I just got more curious about it. Thanks.
