I am running XP64 on an AMD 6400+ with dual Seagate 7200.11's in RAID 0, and
I am running into a few problems with installing any of the .NET Framework
versions. Every time i go to install it, it gets a few seconds into the
install and shuts down the install with an Error message "Invalid Character
in Program Files (x86)"
So i have been looking around forums and I have tried unassigning the DVD
drive, and then installing and I just get Invalid drive E:\, And havent been
able to find any other solutions beyond reassigning the drive letters.

This is for .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5

That is unique. I can't install anything higher than 2 and up, but had
no problem with the other .Net programs.

Yeah, tell me about it. Very frustrating, many programs will not install
without .net
plus I just got VS 2003 PE from my university for free and cant play with it
yet

I can't seem to uninstall dot net and start over. Now there is a MS
program that is supposed to uninstall anything, but they make it sound
like a jack hammer rather than a scalpel.

I still have the file downloaded, but haven't worked up the courage to
try it.

Ryan,
Have you tried the latest 3.5 release?
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=333325fd-ae52-4e35-b531-508d977d32a6
Note that the small download (2.7MB) is just the bootstrapper for the web
installation.
If you want the whole package, go here:

Carlos,
It seems that this problem manifests itself in all versions that are
available to me (1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5)

Some other programs that I can't seem to install are Aol Instant messenger,
Itunes, and the Java Runtime environment. This problem is also preventing me
from installing VS .Net 2003 PE

Ryan,
It looks like these programs are having problems when trying to access the
Program Files (x86) folder or subfolders.
Let's start with these two possible workarounds.
1.- Rollback (system restore) to a date before this problem showed up.
2.- Scan your disk for errors, there might be something there.

Last but not least, post back your results.
Somebody else in this NG might bring new ideas after that.

As far as I remember, most of the original regulars here where quite happy
that AOL software wouldn't run on XP x64!!!

I don't know what happened after that. Is it possible that trying to install
this, has corrupted your '.NET' installation?

Perhaps you should try and remove AOL and re-install the Windows Network
components - then install your .NET from scratch?

But he can't install the Java RE also.
My guess is that when these programs try to create their own installation
subfolder under c:\Program Files (x86) they find something "funny" there that
prevents it.
(corrupted MFT?)

Well, I just think that any corruption on the filesystem SHOULD have
resulted in some type of 'serious' error message or warning that said so. On
top of that, it is RAID so do not mess with the filesystem unless you have a
clear indication!

I was fantazising about the Networking Components possibly being damaged,
that might prevent Java to complete, I would suppose?

I think it is to much of a coincidence if any random corruption happened to
infest the directory structure just at the time when these things were being
installed - and I do not believe any of those installations would be
corrupting that structure by itself.

It is certainly possible, however, but I would like to hear someone with
personal experience and knowledge about the AOL stuff express opinion about
its being supported on Vista. If it isn't, then that HAS got to be removed
at once anyway.

Hang on for a bit, Ryan!
