Hi Folks - Basically very confused right now. I have the following setup:

AMD +4800
two SATA Hard drives
A8N_SLI Deluxe MB

I had x64 and XP installed successfully, one on each drive. Unfortunately
due to something I've done, I now have only XP installed on one Hard disk.
I'm trying to reinstall x64 on the second hard disk but I get the following
messages when I setup using the x64 CD:

95608 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]

E: Partition1 [NTFS] 95612 MB < 78514 Free>

238473 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 atapi [MBR]

C: Partition1 [New (Raw)] 238465 MB ( 238464 MB Free)
Unpartitioned space 8 MB

*****
I hit 'install on c: which is the 'empty' HD I want to re-install x64 on and
I end up with the following:

To install Windows on the partition you selected,
Setup must write some startup files to the following disk:

95608 MB Disk 0 at Id on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]

However, this disk does not contain a Windows-compatible partition

******

It goes on to say that it wants me to create a windows partition on this E:
volume which has, of course my Windows XP Pro already installed. Not wanting
to completely erase the XP Pro on E: is there any way to get around this and
re-install Windows x64 on the C: drive (Volume, whatever)? or any way to
successully re-install it? and keep XP Pro (and all my files)

I've tried everything I can think of including altering the boot.ini, but to
no avail. Is it completely necessary to start all over, reformat both drives?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Mark M.

You don't say if you can boot into your XP system. If you can, why don't
you go to disk management and delete the C partition and then set up a fresh
primary partition and format it and set active.
I would then try to install x64. If you have problems, switch boot order to
have the new partition first in your boot order and try it again.
Let us know the results.

Hi John Thanks for the reply. To answer your question, yes, I can boot up XP
Pro on the smaller drive (i.e. the 100GB one). However, I did delete the c:
partition (on the large 250GB HD) from the x64 CD, repartitioned it and made
it active. Unfortunately, no change. It seems that I cannot make the large
drive (i.e. the 250GB empty disk) the primary disk in the BIOS setup. I
switched the order under Boot priority: Hard Drives but still show the
smaller one first in the setup. I have a basic understanding of volumes and
HD letters, but it still confuses me.

Has anybody had to reinstall x64 on a dual boot XP, x64 2 SATA HD system
before?

I guess this is the most direct question to the problem.

Thanks John - Mark M.

But you haven't reformatted the drive (raw) You most likely have a sub
section where the hard drives can be set in order, usually within the
priority section of the BIOS. At worst you can switch the connectors. That
will make the other drives MBR the one that would be written to if there is
a mbr problem before you do a fixmbr.

Hi John - Thanks for the reply. I neglected to mentioned that I did reformat
the HD. However, trying your 'at worst' senario I was able to reinstall x64.

Now I have a question regarding the boot sequence as it does not give me the
option of selecting which operating system, only the x64 version now boots. I
suspect I need to do something with the XP Pro boot.ini file AND/OR switch
back the cable to their original HDs and see what happens.

Do you have any suggestions on what the next step would be so that I would
see this option?

Thanks again - Mark M.

Since this should have built correctly, make sure the other drive is visible
in POST and if necessary do the command MAP first in recovery console. If
the x86 system isn't listed, check cables, etc.
Use the x64 CD and go into recovery console and use the command bootcfg
/rebuild (remember the space after bootcfg)
I am concerned that there is something wrong with the mbr sector of the x86
drive and I always hesitate to do a fixmbr for that drive before checking
everything else, especially when it boots its own system.

Re: Problem with reinstalling x64 and XP two hard disks: Help need by MarkM

Hi John - Thanks for sticking with me on this one.

Sequence of events:

Used x64 disk to get into recovery
used 'map' got the following:

E: NTFS 95612MB \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1
C: NTFS 238465MB \Device\Harddisk1\Partition1
A: \Device\Foppy0
D: \Device\CdRom0

in c:\Windows I run 'bootcgf /rebuild'

Total identified Windows installs: 1
[1]: C:\Windows
Add installation to boot list? (yes/no/all):
I choose 'Y' for yes
Entered load id: win xp Pro x64
Entered OS load options: /fastdetect /NoExecute

Results:

Error: Failed to add the selected boot entry to the boot list

I hope this provides enough info to find out what happened or how to fix it.
By the way, switch HD cables will work, but's a bit inefficient.

Thanks John - Mark M.

Re: Problem with reinstalling x64 and XP two hard disks: Help need by John

Definately is not recognizing that there is a windows system on the E drive.
You can try a fixboot E first.

You could then manually add the other system to the boot.ini I would
suggest you do this with the x64 system booted up. Since you have harddisks
0 and 1, just duplicate the line for the one that is there for the x64
system and change the harddisk number to the other one. You can edit it
directly or thru System Properties/advanced/startup If you are
uncomfortable doing this, you can save a copy of the boot.ini file elsewhere
first.

If it still isn't seen then you could then run a fixmbr /help to find the
format to fix the mbr on
the harddisk0 (or just have that one back as the system drive) There is a
chance of data loss, but I would think it is a really minor chance.
Always best to backup the drive first if possible.

Re: Problem with reinstalling x64 and XP two hard disks: Help need by MarkM

Hi John - Thanks for help. With your help I finally figured it out. It was
basically a matter of making sure that the x64 volume was in boot position #1
AND that the boot.ini on the x64 OS had the appropriate two lines which
pointed to the two volumes with the different OS's.

Thanks again - Mark
