I have purchased windows Vista home premium upgrade I have tried to install
it 4 times,
It get about three quarters of the way through it then restores my PC back
to Windows XP.
I have an Athlon AMD 64 processor 3200 2.20GHZ. I am aware that I can
purchase a 64 bit software at an additional cost.
PC world from whom I bought this software have offered me a full refund.
they also made me aware that if I were to purchase the ultimate(as this
version contains both 32 and 64 bit) version that I would have major problems
as all drivers must be digitaly signed and that vista ultimate does not alow
drivers that are not digitaly signed.
Any advice would be most welcome, as I dont really want to give up my New
software.
Thankyou in advance
I am so dissapointed

You don't have a 64-bit OS problem. This is a software
group, not a hardware group.

It appears you have a hardware problem and should try
resolving that.

Thankyou for your response but I afraid it went right over my setf taught
head.
I am sorry I guess I am just a little lost, this is all so confusing for me .
I think I might phone Microsoft again and see where I am going wrong.

True enough Theo, but for the record Nasda, if that AMD64 3200+ is running
at 2.2 ghz it's overclocked, that's a 2 ghz processor, look in the bios for
the cpu settings and put it back to auto, this will set the processor back
to it's true speed and should allow the install, at least it's a place to
start. Beyond that you do need to check your hardware and the proper news
group.

It may not be over clocked. The socket 754 3200+ revision
CG & E6 is listed as 2,200MHz default operating frequency.

P.S.

The models with 512KB cache run at 2,200MHz vs the one with
1MB cache which run at 2,000MHz.

You need to remove all AV and other software that monitors the system. In
your case you might consider using the Windows Easy Transfer wizard and
saving your files and settings then doing a custom install instead of an
upgrade install. You will have to reinstall your apps. A few systems
refuse to upgrade and yours may be one.

True enough, I tend to overlook the Socket754's. I was thinking Socket939.

Right, while a number of the 754's will run 64 bit, by and large they
are probably better suited for Windows XP and 32 bit Vista.

The 939's are sort of crossover -- the higher end motherboards support
PCI X16 and even SLI x16, but by and large the top limit is 4G of RAM
and DDRAM at that.

The newer X2's look like a place where Vista 64 could happily stretch
out -- dual channel memory, DDR2, 8G to 16G RAM supported, and faster
dual core CPU's.
