I have tried defender or whatever it is called now and found less than satisfactory. I have tried the free AVG anti-spy every time I ran it there was at leaset 9-15 infections I don't think it did anything, that is everytime I ran it there was always more? and more!     - Autoplay corrupted in XP x64 I have tried everything: searching on the web for ways to repair this: with the gpedit.msc command, with programs to repair (Microsoft only has a repair autoplay program for XP 32-bit)... I even used my XP x64 CD to repair the installation and the autoplay function is not working. I have access to my DVD/CD drive, but for the USB flash drives it's worse: It's partially recognized by XP x64, because the 'Safely Remove Hardware' button appears and using 'manage' with right-click on 'My Computer' and going to 'Disk Management', the drive is there, but with no letter assigned to it and when I try to 'Change Drive Letter and Paths...', nothing happens.     - Fax Hi , I am having a peculiar problem with my Win XP x64. I installed the fax services, and when i try to send a fax, it does not go, it remains in out box. I went to help file, there it asked me to check if local services were on, i checked that too, it is on, no problems there. The modem i see in device manager is SOFTV92 Data Fax modem with Smart CP. There is no problem with the modem as i checked using DIALER to call my other number and i am able to call my other number. I am also able to use 3rd party fax software like VentaFax.     - windows 2003 server r2 x64 installation problem I am attempting to load Windows 2003 Server R2 x64 Standard edition on a brand new server (2.4ghz Xeon processor with EMT64). I am using the version of software from the MSDN package. When I boot from CD and the options to install the O/S show up, I am not given a choice to load the x64 edition only the Standard edition with no x64 designation which I must assume is the 32bit version. I am wondering if I should see an x64 designation on the option screen when choosing to load the O/S. If I am, I cannot for the life of me figure out why I am not given this option from the boot/load menu. Is it possible that some other bootable cd must be made for this version from the MSDN cd?     - How automate to setting Priority and Affinity for specific apps. Hi Group, I have a very CPU intensive program((AutoCAD 2007)which is not a multithread app.), and I notice when I go in to Task Manager(on a Quad Core System) and set Priority to High and Affinity to CPU 2 and CPU 3, that I get better performance. However, currently when I change the above settings I do so each time I open AutoCAD. Does anyone of a way to have these assignments automated? My first thought was using command line switches for the icon, but I can't seem to find any help. Second question; does anyone have a link to all of the command line switches for non OS .exe's?     - How to find new 'Patch Tuesday' patches? It looks like I made a huge mistake. Yesterday was 'Patch Tuesday' for October, and instead of carefully looking at everything that would be installed, I just opted for the express install. One reboot later, and now my system is hanging randomly. So my best guess is that I need to back out the patches (if possible), but I'm not even sure what the new patches were. The headphones work and the microphone is plugged in the right port. I've checked all the sound settings and can't find any reason that it wouldn't work. I've tested it on another system and it works fine. I have Windows XP Pro. 64bit Edition, and a Shuttle SN25P system with a VIA Vinyl Envy24PT PCI Audio Controller. As best I can find I have all the latest drivers. I just have the normal Sound in Control Panel and nothing is muted. Audio/Sound Recording has Mic selected under Volume and with it set at the top. Sound/Volume/Device Volume/Advanced -- lists a large range of volume controls but the only Advanced is under Mic. Which just has Bass/Treble greyed out and 20dB Boot and Set To Front Mic, both selected. I've tried it with each/both unselected also. I've tried testing the mic with Sound Recorder but have gotten nothing. I've also tested with HL2:Insurgency Mod with the Voice enabled. Voice recording has a Hardware test but that always gives a network error saying "There are no suitable networking devices installed." "Windows cannot execute DpvSetup.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install." I have the lastest DirextX drivers. "DxDiag" / 64bit / Network / Direct Play Voice Options / Run Wizard - "The DirectPlay Voice Wizard failed with error code 0x80158320." "DxDiag" / 32bit / Network / Direct Play Voice Options / Run Wizard - Puts me to a screen asking me to test my mic by speaking the stated text, while doing so nothing changes and if I hit the volume button it gives the error "Windows cannot execute SndVol32.exe, use Add/Remove Programs control panel to install." and trying to go to the next page stops the wizard as my mic hasn't picked anything up. I've looked at the MS KB and carried out the instructions about changing the registry DWords to 3/3/2 respectively and nothing has changed. My brother has the same sort of system and same OS and can't get a microphone to work either. I've also posted in the VIA Arena and PlanetAMD64 forums and emailed Shuttle without any resolution.     - Bass redirection solution for SoundBlasters in Vista Bass redirection is that beautiful feature that allows you send all the rich sounding lower frequencies to that ".1" speaker making those bass sounds deep and giving music you know, that "punch". From the very start with their Vista drivers, CreativeLabs crippled their control panels in the sense that the "bass redirection" option was no longer available. Lower frequencies were sent to the other tiny 5 speakers tending to give a "flat" sound. I've been searching for a solution for many months. The workaround, not the subject of this post, I had until today was mapping the speakers in Media Player Classic. Today I found this CreativeLabs application in their Vista forums that did the trick http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=25849 for the lower priced SB 24bit, Audigy SE, Audigy LE and probably others (try it at your own risk).     - WoW! That was too easy... I took some good advice and chose to donate most of my HP rebates back to Bill for a copy of Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Perhaps some of you will remember my ranting and raving about how my new HP-OEM (m8124n) didn't come with the 64-bit DVD. Oh well, I got over it and tonight I installed Ultimate 64-bit without a hitch... I opted to let Vista Ultimate take some GB's from (C:) to create the new partition (J:). After 47 updates I'm live and this is my second transmission via mail... Sure, I haven't tested all of my hardware yet but hey, what the heck, I can always shut down and load x86 if I'm in a pinch for whatever aint workin'...     - Missing User Profile! I tried to log in and I'm getting a message that the User Profile can not be loaded. No one has used my computer since I last shut it down. I'm using Vista 64 and I have 2 profiles, my main admin profile and my sons profile that is under parental control. My main profile is not loading and when I try to do any sort of admin function under my son's profile it asked for my password to get my admin rights, well that doesn't work. I can log into Vista 32 I have installed as a dual boot on this computer so I have some access but still limited. I'm looking for any ideas as to how I can resolve this issue. Thanks.     - I can't delete a folder on my desktop I created a folder on my desktop, and when I went to rename it, I pressed "255" while holding the ALT key. Doing this makes the name blank.     - Running Vista 64 bit in 32 bit mode I recently purchased Vista 64 bit, when in retrospect I should have purchased th 32 bit version. I am now encoutering problems (obviously) running most of my programs, as they are not compatible with the 64 bit version. Is there any way to run the 64 bit version in a 32 bit mode, or is there any remedy to this problem? I was thinking that if all else fails I would have to go out and buy the 32 bit version, and reinstall it over the 64 bit version...agian, will that work if I do that, or am I going to have to reformat the disk, and start all over from scratch, which I hoping not to do, both from the perspective of cost and time. I don't want to install R2 when I install the server. Media kit that I have got has two CDs and it installs R2 when I use both CD.     - Getting rid of an old bootable partition... Hi all, I used to have XP 32-bit on my C: drive. Shortly after XP 64-bit came out, I installed in on D: and started dual-booting. It didn't take long after I've completed my migration that I started using x64 exclusively. My system's gone through a few hardware changes since then, but I've never bothered to reboot in XP 32-bit to install drivers and such. A while ago I did try to boot into XP 32-bit (can't remember why I would do such a foolish thing) ;-) but I found out at that time that my 32-bit installation was corrupted. I can't say I cared enough about it to try to fix it or even figure out why it wasn't functional anymore. In fact I'd prefer to have it gone completely. Both partitions (C: and D:) are 30GB in size, on the same physical hard drive (250GB SATA). The C: partition (obviously in such a setup) contains the boot.ini file. Given that I have no need for XP 32-bit, and my D: partition could use the space, I thought I could get rid of the C: partition entirely. So I'm asking for advice on exactly how I could proceed, given that XP's disk manager doesn't really have the smarts to do such a thing. At a minimum I would expect I would have to copy the boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntldr files from C: to D: before I blow away the C: partition (and resize D: to take up that free space)...maybe edit the boot.ini so any reference to ...rdisk(0)partition(2) becomes rdisk(0)partition(1)...but then I'm pretty sure I'll run into further problems because C: drive is currently a primary partition, while D: (and E:, F:, G:, and a couple more) are all logical partitions grouped within one extended partition. I'm not looking to change XP x64's drive letter assignment from D: back to C:...in fact if it does that, that'll screw up *all* references pretty good. I just want the C: partition to go away. I know that at least one of these steps isn't supported by Disk Manager itself (resizing my D: partition), so I'm looking for a good tool (Partition Magic, or something from Acronis?) that is *known* to be able to do these sort of changes intelligently and won't leave me with a system that won't boot...     - Restart bypassing Boot screen Here's a new one: This just started happening. When I restart in Vista 64 the restart process by passes the OS boot choices screen & goes directly to vista logon screen.(I have a duel boot system).LOL If I choose shutdown,then boot it goes to the OS boot choices screen. If I boot to winxp 64 then re-start it also by passes the OS boot choice screen & goes directly to the Vista Logon screen. LOL. I have to shut-down then boot to get the OS boot screen.     - $3,000 Paper Weight So I had this Really nice gaming computer built. Its running this really great OS called Vista 64. (WTFE) Its causing a yellow line to run down my screen on the right side. Its not turning my computer off when i tell it to. Its not even being recognized as a 64bit OS when it comes to driver installs to fix the SLI issue im having with my 8800GTX's. Windows updates are not even installing because of "bad Installs" or so Vista tells me. Pure Edge Don't work. Thank god I'm a non-commissioned officer and have to use pure edge to counsel my fire team monthly. But on the good news Its recognizing my 4 gigs of ram. How can I fix these issues besides loading my .45 and putting it out of its misery and microwaving the Vista CD? Nvida tells me im trying to install a 64bit program on a 32bit OS, then tells me im trying to install a 32bit program on a 64bit OS.......along with the number of issues I'm having how can i fix this seriously?     - Sad but true, Another X64 tale. Like many other before me, I decided it was time to get a 64 bit system. I got a combo from the "Geeks" which I placed in an old enclosure with a new power supply. The combo wouldn't load winxp 32, win 98 or anything else. It wouldn't even boot a hard drive with win xp on it. Good thing MS offered a trial 64 bit XP. I downloaded it, burned it, loaded it and "poof"! I have a 64 bit operating system. The video is on the motherboard and the LED mouse works fine as does the ethernet adapter (onboard as well). As a matter of fact, as an internet browser it's just great, but not noticebly better than my old socket A 1 gig duron set up. It's just wonderful! Everything works! (unless you want to add a peripheral like a printer, a network card, a video capture card, a bluetooth adapter, a serial port adapter; actually 100% of the devices I tried to install didn't load.) I was going to try to load some regular software, but whats the point? I can't print, copy, scan, send or retrieve anything unless it goes through my old stand-by computer anyway, and even then, it didn't like the way I set up the LAN. But I threatened to take away 1 gig of memory and it finally let itself be recognized by the network. I spent one day trying to get drivers that would work with any device. Even the Vista 64 bit drivers wouldn't work. It was like giving myself a wedgie, only faster! So, I thought I would just buy device that would work with win 64. Try that! The amount of time I have spent looking at specs (and not finding x64) is going against the faster speed and reliability of the OS. (which is a misnomer, sure it's reliable and stable, it doesn't DO anything.) I will be too old to see the screen and probably won't care when I escape from the nursing home to get the first compatible usb device! The funny thing is that when you look at the new systems for sale, most of them are 64 bit. Probably Vista though, but way too slow. Does Linux have a 64 bit OS?
