    - Memory Management & best strategy moving forward Hi, I have a fairly new Alienware dual processor Xeon workstation with 4 Gb of RAM. I bought it with XP pro 32 bit due to concerns about current apps running well on a 64-bit system, possible driver issues and all the anti-spyware, antivirus utilities, etc. that might have problems. I contacted Alienware yesterday and they said that my system would work quite well with 64 bit Windows. Here's the strategy question: Am I better off to upgrade to the 64-bit version of Windows XP now? Or would it be better to wait for Vista in the first of the year? My sense is that software developers will focus on Vista more than any current version of XP. I've just started researching all this and can't find much information on Vista "under the hood". It is the basic version of Vista still a 32-bit system? I presume there logically would be a 64-bit version of Vista available? My biggest challenge is running Photoshop effectively within 32-bit XP Pro SP-2. Photoshop can never seem to get enough memory. Currently I am using the 3 GB switch, Photoshop's memory settings set to 100%, a 4096 MB page file and a dedicated scratch disk for Photoshop, and it is still slower than it should be. It gets very, very slow afterabout 12 steps in Photoshop until the available RAM is down to less than 400 MB... (I'm running MeMTurbo 3 and can watch the available memory drop after every step.     - x64 driver for intel HD Audio that works? Can anyone tell me how to enable the sound output on my new computer? Intel D946GXis with Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Windows XP Professional x64. I first installed the audio drivers that came with the MBD, and had a problem with the UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio. I downloaded the MicroSoft Update KB901105 and the latest Intel driver ver 5.10.5208.exe. I am now stumped as the sound and audio device in control panel still shows "No Audio Device Installed".     - IE7 - updating only one of 'em? Hi all, I realize that IE7 is an update to IE6, and thus as with every previous version, you can't install and run them side-by-side. XP (and 2003) x64 however is a unique beast, as it ships with both the x86 and x64 versions running independantly. I would think one should be able to update, say, IE6 x86 to IE7, but keep IE6 x64.     - just in time debugger problem I am am multimedia developper with Macromedia Director. Seemingly there are some script-errors somewhere, that are not displayed by Directors error-detection. I got to say that I use HTML display and javascript in the same application via an extension for Director (WebXtra by tabuleiro). These errors only get seen on machines with just-in-time-debugging ON. Unfortuantely the customer's company uses this setting worldwide. As I learned on my search for information, this tool has something to do with visual studio, which I must admit have never touched even with my fingertips. My problem is: How can I have this debugging tool on my machine, so I can watch my application as it runs. And so finally find the error to deliever a clean application to my customer?     - Printing in Vista x64 and HP Officejet 7410 Posted this in Printers and faxes, but got no response. Maybe since I am running x64 of Vista this forum can help. Windows Vista RC2 x64 recognized and installed drivers for my HP OfficeJet 7410, but when printing multiple page documents from the internet or Microsoft Office 2007 (especially Outlook) with Technical Refresh the printer only prints one or two pages. It usually prints the first and last page, but prints blank pages in between. Can transfer the affected file to Word and print OK. Have RC2 x64 installed on Gateway GM5048 with 2 gb memory on a fresh install. Have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. This has been going on since Beta 2.     - iSCSI initiator I'm trying to install the following: Initiator-2.02-QFE-bld1895-amd64fre.exe On a fresh build of Windows Server 2k3 Enterprise R2 x64 with a Dual Core AMD 64bit Opteron (285), and I get about halfway through the install before I get an error dialogue that is titled "iscsi200 Setup Error" and gives "Incorrect Function" in the body of the error message. The only thing to do from there is to click 'OK', which then brings up another error with the same title but with "iscsi200 installation did not complete. Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made." in the body. And when you click OK, it backs up the steps that had already bene done and there we sit. The event log does not tell anything specific beyond what the error popups already told me. I have two of these servers, both in the same state, doing the same thing.     - Dual boot blues Hi all, After all the dual boot instructions you guys have posted, I managed to mess up my computer anyway. Maybe one of you will help me if I promise to follow directions. I started with XP64. Then I brought an old drive that had XP32 on it, reinstalled the system to try to get a dual boot (I know I shouldn't have done that but I was in a hurry and needed to get XP32 working) and it seemed to have worked...but not really. I got a dual boot alright but now the XP32 works and the XP64 doesn't. When I select XP64 I get the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe please reinstall a copy of the above file I'm not even sure where I would find this file to copy. Yeah, I know that I should know but I just don't. When I try to start from the XP64 CD, I end up on a C:\WINDOWS> prompt with little indication as to what to do.     - 32 bit Windows 2003 Server on x64 processor I probably have to return my new machine tomorrow, but I'm trying to figure this out. We got a new machine, and because of miscommunications, it came with a 64 bit version of the Intel DUAL Core P4. I didn't want that. In any case, the vendor install installed Windows 2003 Standard Server R1 and on the two CDs it says X64 Edition. Well, I can't use to because I must install a PCI Card that only supports 32 bit drivers. The OS did not recognize them. So my question is, does this Windows 2003 Standard Server R1 with 2 CD's allow me to install the regular 32 bit version of Windows 2003 standard server? Will CD installer ask me if I want 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows? The info at Microsoft, the readme and help isn't very clear with this complex version of Windows 2003 edition. I probably won't have a choice if tomorrow I find out the PCI card will not work with the 64 bit CPU or bus hardware, regardless of the OS, but if I all need to do is reinstall with the 32 bit version of Window 2003, then I will that route rather then return the machine tomorrow to replace it with a 32 bit CPU instead.     - Diskeeper 2007. Diskeeper 2007 was released today. Vista isn't supported yet but x64 is. I tested the beta with good results. I prefer the Professional-Premier version but my budget went with the Professional version. New features include an automatic defragmentation of all partitions during idle time which has no effect on system efficiency. The boot-time defragmentation doesn't corrupt Vista partitions.     - 4 GB Memory not Recognised On Windows Server 2003 x64bit OS with 3GB memory - 2x 1GB and 2 x 512MB. I replaced the 2 x 512MB with 2 x 1GB, therefore the system now has 4 x 1GB = total 4GB. The bios see it as 4GB but Windows x64bit see it as 3.5 GB. When I put them in pairs, both pairs in Windows report 2GB but when I place all 4 it reports 3.5. Hope that explanation makes sense. Do I need to place the /3GB /PAE switch in the boot.ini? I thought the x64bit sorted out the memory allocation issue? Have you seen this before?     - Devmgr.dll Having problems with this guy. I am running GDB of MingW on x64. It runs until it tries to debug an executable. Then I get "Error: dll starting at 0x78d41000 not found." Dependency Walker states that everything is ok, but devmgr.dll. It states that it is an AMD64 build (I am on Opteron). All others are x86. I think what happened is that the 64-bit version of devmgr got stuck in the System32 folder instead of the SysWOW64. We have such an obsene select agreement with MS, that if the bits can be had, we should be able to get them. So I won this crazy auction for a dual itanium workstation, and I really dont think that IBM is going to send me media.     - OT: New laptop! And Dynamic stiping question Many of you know I've been considering a laptop for quite some time. Finally bought an HP Pavilion dv9000, Core2 Duo T5500, 2gb DDR2 RAM, 2 x 100gb SATA drives, GeForce Go 7600 256mb dedicated vid card, 17" wide screen and TV tuner card, 1000mbps network card, wireles NIC as well. Costco, $1,500! Yay! I'll think I'll leave XP Media Edition on until Vista x64 is released. Now that I'm done bragging, I do have a question. I already asked this in microsoft.public.storage, but got no response, you you are the lucky guys and gals today. I have two Fujitsu 100gb HDDs. Has anyone converted their disks to Dynamic and striped their drives, basically running software RAID0? Any feedback for me? I've moved much of my data to the laptop and access that from my other two workstations, so increased throughput would be nice. Going from U320 SCSI RAID0 to this was definitely a hit in performance, so I would consider it if it does really improve throughput. The HDDs are Fujitsu MHV2100BH, and are SATA not IDE. I back up daily on DAT from my main workstation. I will opt for performance over redundancy in my case.     - Run 32-bit Executable from 64-bit Shared Folder OK, this might be a wierd question, but I just want to satisfy my curiosity: I have a 32-bit executable (c++ compiled on 32-bit windows). The executable is sitting in a shared folder on a 64-bit machine. When I try to run the executable on a 32-bit machine from the share, I get an error.     - Killer blow for x64 compatability... I had great hopes that x64 would progress from a niche OS, with Vista x64, but Microsoft have killed that.. Why? the "Works with Vista" logo.. All the other drives are always available, only the C:\ drive gets dropped. I have run all tests on the C:\ drive using a WD test and everything comes back positive without any errors. The temporary cure is to disconnect D.C. to the other three drives, check all connects, reboot at which time the C:\ is found and Windows XP Pro. 64 bit OS loads without any errors like nothing was ever wrong.     - x64 Won't load sigmatel drivers Ever since beta two my sigmatel high definition x64 drivers won't load. In fact, when I check Control Panel, Add Hardware, no sigmatel is even listed. I am running RC2 on a Gateway GM5048 with 2gb memory. Under Windows Xp the following drivers for audio are loaded: ATI unified AVstream driver Audio Codecs Legacy Audio drivers Legacy Video Capture devices Media control devices SigmaTel High Definiton Audio CODEC Unimodem half duplex audio device Video Codecs I would have thought the same would be loaded under Vixta x64 with the exception that Sigmatel high definition audio codec x64 would have been loaded. Instead, only the following are loaded: ATI Unified AVStream Driver High Definition Audio Device. Audio works. However, when I check audio under control panel, no recording devices are present.
