In Win XP Pro, 64 bit the Outlook Express spelling checker fails with an
"error occurred" message every time I try to use it.

Is there a patch or fix available?

Spell checking is not supported in the 64-bit version of Outlook Express.
What works differently?
Because spell checking is not supported, you will see an error if you try to
check spelling within a new message in Outlook Express by clicking Spelling
on the Tools menu, or by pressing F7.

Not until there is a 64 bit version of Office will you be able to use the
Spell Checker in OE 64 Bit.

Ah, haven't seen that question in a while. :) No, there is no fix available.
Outlook Express is a 64-bit program, and it doesn't have a spell checker of
its own. Instead, it is designed to take advantage of Microsoft Office's
spell checker. Unfortunately, MS Office is a 32-bit program and the spell
checking module is a 32-bit Dynamic Link Library (DLL). A 64-bit program can
not call a 32-bit DLL. (And, of course, a 32-bit program can't call a 64-bit
DLL.) The fix for this will require a 64-bit version of Office, I suspect.

Note: There have been some workarounds proposed to make this work, but
Microsoft has _very_ specifically said that they are a bad idea and that
they risk data corruption.

As you have noticed, there is nothing that MS can do until 64-bit Office
is available. Then you have to purchase and install it just to get a
spell checker for OE. I decided to go with Mozilla Thunderbird. It
runs on XP64 and has it's own spell checker -- and it's free!

What about keeping it simple and using 32 bit Outlook Express?
Does OE have to be a 64bit program to run in XP Pro 64?

To use the spelling checker in Outlook Express, Microsoft Word has to be
installed, only then the spelling option can be utilized.

I just purchased XP Pro 64 yesterday and I am glad the spelling checker
issue was brought up by what you call a "troll". If this feature does not
work in XP64 (assuming the "troll" has MS Office installed) then I would be
furious, too. So what is the deal with the spelling checker? Does it work
for others or does it not?

Hi, the spell checker works ok within word but not in OE, but does if you
use outlook for sending e-mails, that's because it uses word as the e-mail
editing client, correct me if I'm wrong. However in newsgroups, OE is used
and the spell checker does not work in that. The 'troll' was not the
original poster, if my memory serves me right.

Correct, and the work around for those emails you have to have spell checked
is to cut and paste into a word document, correct if necessary and paste
back into OE if corrections have been made.

Thanks. Good explanation and makes sense. However, many people use Outlook
Express for email and newsgroup purposes like I do and when I'd like to
spell check my reply, I press on Tools and then spelling and my writing is
immediately checked for correctness in XP 32. If this option does not work
with XP 64 due to M$ rush to market with a half ass program, I am going to
be very unhappy with my purchase of XP 64 - which I may end up returning to

Be prepared to be unhappy and also good luck returning it to Microsoft. I
don't remember them having a return policy on anything but Retail products
and this is OEM. You should have taken advantage of the trial if you
weren't sure.
Why don't you go into OE options in x32 and set spell check to automatic.
That will save you the steps you seem to be annoyed by. If you have a Word
document open, the two steps necessary are the same as what you are doing
now and only 2 more quick steps if there are errors. A nuisance, yes, but
as Charlie has so clearly detailed, this system is NOT a good match for the
day to day retail user.

Now designated Office 2007. Guess that is a clue to how long to wait. I
don't guess that will make the Vista 64 users happy either.

Best work around right now, but the point remains, still do a manual check
on the grammar, Word is quick approve, but slow analyze.

This has NOTHING to do with a rush to market. It is entirely because there
is no 64-bit Microsoft Office. Yet. OE has NEVER had spellchecking in and of
itself. You only had spell checking if you had office installed.
Unfortunately, there is no way for a 64-bit program to call a 32-bit DLL,
and that's what the spell checking module is in Office.

Keep in mind that almost all of the _people_ on this newgroup are not
Microsoft employees, and don't get paid to help their fellow users. They
deserve polite and professional treatment, and messages that are rude don't
promote the atmosphere of support that we, as volunteers, try to maintain on
this newsgroup. None of us can change any of the underlying programs, or
effect a direct change in priorities at MS. However, as has been shown more
than once here, by making our case clearly, and with rational arguments, we
_can_ effect a change, since this newsgroup is closely monitored by both the
product management team, and support personnel inside MS. (And Darrell, from
the PSS team, posts regularly here with extremely helpful answers to
questions the rest of us don't know the answers to.)

Your best bet would be to _not_ use OE, because it can lead to trouble with
viruses and the lot. While MS is fixing all the problems and leaks, you
would be better off to use something like Mozilla Thunderbird, which has an
independent spellchecker (it's free too). Then if OE is fixed, you can
always get back to using it (or maybe you don't want to anymore).

By law, you can return software if you don't agree with the license terms,
otherwise, someone can sell you trashware inside the box. Linux comes to
mind.

I sure took advantage of the trial which I discarded after 10 days due to
disappointment with its limitations. I sincerely thought, and now hope, that
the released OEM version is far better than the trial version ever was. If
it isn't, I'll be back to vent.

Now I could have used Linux but, please forgive me, it's much worse than
Windows, and I expect class out of Microsoft. So I guess before I run my
mouth any further, I'll wait until I install the OEM version and see what
happens then. In the meantime, I'd like to thank all of you who advised and
helped.

The trial is the same as the OEM version, unless by trial you are referring
to one of the beta versions

I think the 2007 name is a place holder, it has not been confirmed by

Yes, I was referring to the beta version. So I guess then that the OEM
version is not the same as the beta version but improved over the beta
version?

Yes, that's what the beta process is all about - improving the software
prior to actually releasing it. :) I don't think there were any specific
functionality changes from the CTP build until RTM, though there may have
been some minor ones. But stability, performance, etc., were definitely
improved.
