64 bit to 32 bit
My boss wanted a top of the line computer, so I told him what top of the line
was. So, now he has a 64 bit chip with Win XP Pro x64. Unfortunately, he
can't connect anything to it because his HP printer doesn't have a compatible

AVG Plus Firewall Edition, Error messages in Program log
Hello
I´m trying the AVG Plus Firewall Edition 7.1 for winxp x64 and every
time I startup my computer I have two error messages in the Program log
in the computer management. The errors is;
005-11-22 12:29:48,890 CANONJON [001424:001440] ERROR 000
AVG7.FW.FwService.FwKernel FDWin2k:: Could not start Packet log, error

and
2005-11-22 12:29:52,328 CANONJON [001424:001440] ERROR 000
AVG7.FW.FwService.FwKernel Failed to create FW interface, code: 1784
I know that the firewall isn´t 100% perfect but it can block everything
that´s not x64 from connecting to the internet. When I look at services
everything with AVG is automatic and has started.
Is there someone who knows why this happens? There are no error
messages while the computer is running. Only this two when I start or
restart the comupter. It´s a bit annoying not to know if the firewall
is running at all or what.

Print Spoolers
I have Windows 2K3 Server SP1 installed. However, I have a problem with my
spooler. The spooler shutdowns adnormally from time to time. This problem has
been communicated to Microsoft and their advise is to what for the next
release as they have a solution for that problem. Release date at present is
unknown.
As a possible workaround, I would like to create a batch file that would
allow an print operator to execute. All I want to do is to shutdown and
restart spooler.

does anyone know how it will behaive if I put a second CPU (single core

Im asking since I can buy a cheap xeon 3.2 (100$), and would like to know if
I can add this to my existing system

a simple Form User Control developed by C#. It just contains a button and

HOW TO: Windows Media Connect on x64 (Xbox 360 owners, listen up!)
Here's some instructions provided in the Windows Media newsgroup for
installing Windows Media Connect on x64. If you want your Xbox 360 to
stream music off your PC, you'll need this software. It's totally,
way-out-of-left-field unsupported, so don't blame me or MS if this happens
to blow up your computer, set fire to your lawn, mutate your kids, etc..
However, it worked for me, so I'll pass it along to everyone else here.
Below is the message, quoted in its entirety, and someone should commend
this guy for hooking us up. -KML
Of course, this is completly unsupported (and totally useful) so you didn't
hear it from me. You'll need wmccds.exe, wmcsci.dll, and wmccfg.exe from
out
of the setup package. You should be able to get it by downloading the setup
package and opening it up with winzip and just extracting the files. For
the
rest of this you'll need to be logged in as an adiminstrator.
1. Create an install directory. Something like c:\program
files(x86)\Windows Media Connect 2
2. Copy wmccds.exe, wmcsci.dll, and wmccdf.exe to your install directory.
3. Open a 32bit command window and navigate to your install directory.
4. Run "regsvr32 wmcsci.dll"
5. Run "wmccds.exe -installwithfiles"
6. Run wmccfg.exe and complete the "first run wizard"
To uninstall WMC (without removing any actual files)
7. exit wmccfg.exe (not just close to the task bar, but actually exit)
8. run "net stop wmconnectcds" to stop the service.
9. run "regsvr32 -u wmcsci.dll"
I haven't actually tried any of this stuff running under WOW on an x64
system. But that should get you past the setup block.
Hope it works!

MS RAW Image Thumbnail and Viewer for x64?
Does anyone know if Microsoft plans to make the "Microsoft RAW Image
Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP" download available on x64?
This download allows the user to view thumbnails of RAW files (from digital
cameras) in Explorer, in exactly the same way that they currently see thumbs
for JPEGs. It's a really nice feature for people who are into digital
photography.
I'm also interested in the new "Color Control Panel Applet" which replaces
the existing applet with a version that handles color management in a more
obvious way.
It seems odd that neither of these updates are available for x64 yet when
Microsoft sell x64 as "a benefit for digital content creators, including 3-D
animators, digital artists.."

News: 64 Bit Office Outlook in Works?
Just read this on eWeek about the next version of Exchange support 64 bit
hardware only, here is an interesting snippet that caught my eye:
"And as E12 will support mixed 32-bit and 64-bit environments including
legacy Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2000 servers. You can also connect to
either 32-bit or 64-bit Outlook," she clarified.
Looks like there is indeed a 64-bit version of Office on the way, but I
don't believe its the entire suite that will be developed to take advantage
of Windows x64 and 64 bit hardware, probably just Outlook.

Cannot drag onto a desktop icon
When dragging a file onto a desktop icon, the application will start and
open the file you dragged onto the icon. For instance, if I drag movie.avi
onto the virtualdub desktop icon, virtualdub starts and opens movie.avi.
This should be the case for most applications, but it doesn't work. When
dragging a file over a desktop icon, I just can't drop it on top on an icon,
windows just wants to copy the file to desktop. The icon I'm trying to
drag onto, also doesn't become blueish, indicating it doesn't work (which is
correct).
I'm running Windows XP x64 edition. I've never seen this phenomenon with the
regular Windows, but I've *always* seen this phenomenon with the x64 edition.

There were a bunch of postings on the public MS 64bit newsgroup about dual

Would any of you happen to have a pointer to those messages or the

the question this morning (Sunday 11-20-05). What ever happened to those

Benchmark: XP32 vs XP64 - Is there really any benefit to x64 yet?
Hi,
I've run a 3D benchmark on my PC, first with XP 32 and then with x64. I used
3DMark 2005 to run the test.
The overall scores are as follows
Windows XP 32: 5630
Windows XP 64: 5525
I was shocked that the performance is acctually worse on x64.
So this has left me scratching my head thinking what are the real benefits
of XP x64? Yes, we can stick in tons of RAM but I'm quite happy with my 2GB.
How long will it be before developers other than MSFT start writing 64bit
code? 18 months - longer?
Are we running Windows XP 64 just for the sake of it?

OLE Registration Not Working in XP Pro 64bit?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Recently I noticed that I was unable to send "via right click" images
displayed in IE to a mail client message of the same machine. IE would return
an error saying that "This document cannot be sent as email, would you like
to send a shortcut instead?" In all cases, if I select yes, it asks the
message again, then the behavior listed below occurs.
If I use IE 32bit, and select yes, a shortcut is pasted to blank email
message, with Outlook indicating "Outlook has blocked access to the
potentially unsafe attachments: attachment_name." Yet, it shows the URL
shortcut in an email message. If I select no, nothing happens, as probably
should be.
If I use IE 64bit, and select yes or no, the system attempts to install
Outlook Express with an "Internet Connection Wizard" window.
I checked Outlook 2003 and found that the mail format message default is to
use MS Word (found in Outlook under Tools, Options, Mail Format.) However, if
I tried to create a new email message, a word looking format appears and
allows text entry. Upon saving or sending the message, MS Word returns the
following error message â??Interface Not Registeredâ??, and hit ok, and then the
following message indicating that an OLE error has occurred.
I have repaired Office, Word, and IE but no change in the status. I have
searched through all of the settings yet without success to find that one
little bit which makes the difference.
There may be two problems here. From a symptoms viewpoint, I cannot use MS
Word to construct emails, and I cannot start or create an email message by
pasting or passing an object from IE.
I am not sure how to check if the OLE registration process was successful
for MS Word and Outlook and IE, even though I have run repair several times.
I did have Avast AV installed but I have since disabled it. (It could not be
uninstalled.)
Any ideas?
