If I do a Clean Install
The PC I just bought came with Vista HP SP1. If I decide to go through with
my upgrade to Ultimate (Without SP1), I may need to do a Clean INstall. So,
how do I reacquire all of the programs that came preloaded with the system?

Won't Upgrade!
Hey Everyone,
Need some Assistance! I have just purchased the HP m9250F, which comes
pre-loaded with Vist HP 64-Bit. I have purchased the Vista Ultimate Upgrade
Retail Version.. I have completed ALL updates available for Vista HP. When
I tried to Upgrade HP to Ultimate, it would NOT allow me to Upgrade, only to
Clean (Not sure if thats the name) install, Upgrade disabled. It suggested
that I use a more up to date version and than retry the Upgrade.
Not positive if those are the exact words, but 90% correct. What doesn't
make sense is that ALL of the updates have been completed and none are
pending.
So, whats up and how do I fix it? Really don;t want to do a Clean Install,
only because I don't know what will or won't work if it done.

Let's save XP!!!
Although this a server newsgroup, you all probably either use Windows XP or
Vista as your administration workstation. Therefore I am posting this
message here.
Microsoft plans to end most sales of Windows XP on June 30, despite a deep
reluctance by many business and individuals about moving to Vista. I
personally believe Vista has too heavy of a memory and disk space footprint,
less snappy performance, and it fails to allow one to go back to the classic
look and feel of XP. For instance, what happened to the old fashioned
vanilla folders in Explorer? And the lack of an "UP" button in Vista's
Explorer as well. (Now why did the have to take that away?)

Another Question?
in the computer of the previous message, I've installed BOINC and it's
processing SETI and CPDN, but it's only running 2 instances instead of
four??? why it's supposed that it's a quad core and supposed to run four
instances.
Latest AMD processor driver installed.

Some questions in XP x64
I've just upgrade my daughter's computer with a AMD Phenom x4, it has a full
upgrade and I've purchased and installed a Windows XP x64 that I've fully
tested in both of my home computers, everything is working fine except.
- SIMS2 (the game) does not properly starts and shutdown itself, after
uninstall it I've seen the first blue screen in my live in Xp x64, something
wrong with graphic card libraries, is there any safe way to install it, or
it is necessary to install a wmware with a XP x32 machine??? or any other
tweak?? etc.
- I've a Microsoft wireless natural keyboard and mouse, working fine with my
other computers, and another one with this last computer, yesterday night
was impossible to reconnect the mouse, I'd exchange the batteries and did
the reconnect, etc. impossible, and the other problem was that from time to
time or I lost the keyboard or it was very lazy, I think that should be
something with the transceiver (new set in sight, I think), because I
disconnected the mouse and put another one (wired) disconnecting the
wireless and no problem wit mouse and keyboard.
I'll come back with other issues as soon as they'll come.

Is my Windows Server 2003 over Intel Xeon 5150 running in 32 or 64
Hi all,
I know that the 32-bits or 64-bits OS version question was asked many
times before.
Anyway, I googled for the question but did not find any answer which
matches my problem.
At work, we have a huge problem: we compiled an application under a
Windows XP SP2 32-bits OS (build 5.1.2600) and we tried to make it
work on a Windows Server 2003 (build 5.2.3790) which runs over a 2x
DualCore Intel Xeon 5150, 2000 MHz (6 x 333). Unfortunately, the
application is unstable and can crash anywhere in the code whereas it
perfectly works unders our 32-bits systems.
I checked and my Xeon CPU is a 64-bits one.
The OS name is "Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise
Edition" (displayed by Lavalys Everest).
I read that the build 5.2.3790 is the same as Windows XP x64 so I
suppose that my Windows Server 2003 will run in 32-bits over 32-bits
CPU and will run in 64-bits mode over 64-bits CPU.
=> So I suppose, I am running my Windows Server 2003 in 64-bits mode.
Could you confirm please ?
Sorry but I did not find any reliable way to be sure of this. Tag: Nero 7 updated Tag: 58408
Vista 64 Bit - Media Centre & support
Folks
I have Topfield PVR and it is brilliant albeit getting long in the tooth and
would like to replicate its functionality and more in a appropriately
provisioned workstation. Given that the Intel Penryn Quad core processors
are now available, and the price of 1TB HDDs are falling, its time to jump
into a a media centre workstation (I also want to use it for normal computing
functions (Office, Project, Visio etc). I'd like to use Vista in its 64 bit
mode to overcome the addressing limitations.
I am in Australia and we use PAL-B as the television standard and have a
myriad of standards for what is called Standard definitiona nd high
definition digital TV.
I want to use the Intel Q9450 or Q9550 processors for plenty of grunt and
headroom - the rest is a greenfield site.
I'm looking for recommendations for motherboards that are best suited to the
processors and media centre (and to future proof as much as possible);
RAIDed terrabyte HDDs - OK on the motherboard or better to have a separate
controller; Graphics cards (not a gamer but want good output from the media
centre); TV cards (the Topfield can record two channels and playback another
at the same time - it'd be nice to be able to record more channels than the
two (out here programs never run according to the published schedule!) - it
that now possible given the extra processing power of the Quad core
processors; and any other recommendations that you'd like to make.
I'm also interested in any othe potential 'gotchas' that I should be looking
out for - drivers seem to be the thing that scares most people off
Looking forward to the collective wisdom
Cheers

Laptop noise
Since I intalled Windows Vista Business 64-Bits in my Acer Aspire 5630-6091 I
can hear a strange noise (I think from processor). The laptop config is an
Intel Core-2-Duo with 1Gb RAM.
With Windows XP I didn't have this problem. This is my second laptop with
this problem and with the same behavior: only in normal use of Windows.
The most stange is when I start Windows Vista in secure mode: the noise stops.
In my point of view, this is a problem with drivers of Windows Vista.
When I'm in a quite place this noise is horrible.
Please, any idea of how can I solve this problem without removing Windows
Vista and changing it to Windows XP???? Tag: Nero 7 updated Tag: 58374

Vista home premium x64 crashes with no error message or log entry
I've been struggling for 2 weeks now to get the x64 version of windows to run
properly. It's a clean install with no added software yet. It will run for
anywhere between 5 second and 20 hours after reaching the desktop. When it
crashes, everything stops immediately except for the mouse pointer, which
will continue to function for a few minutes usually. The HD makes no sounds
to indicate that it's trying to do anything. When I hit the reset button and
it loads up again, I check the error logs and there is nothing there for the
time of the crash and no errors leading up to the crash. I have removed all
hardware that is not critical to running the system, I've switched out the
memory, run every test I can think of from UltimateBootCD, and run any
windows diagnostic tool that I can think of.
Since the last image before the crash always remains on the monitor, I have
tried leaving Task Manager open on processes tab (ordered by CPU usage), and
also system monitor with the HD activity expanded. When the crash occurs
both the CPU and the HD are operating at very low stress levels and there are
no apparent activity spikes.
This is a phenom 9600 with 4 GB of OCZ ram, Radeon HD3650 graphics, and a
Gigabyte ma78g motherboard. Al of which worked great with the x86 version of
XP-SP2. All applicable updates and hotfixes have been installed.
Does anyone know of a solution to this? If not, is it possible to exchange
my x64 version of Vista for the x86 version? I'd like to stick with Vista,
but if I have to go back to XP to get the system stabilized, I will.

Media Player - 32 or 64 bit?
Hey gang,
This may be a dumb question on my part...
I am running Vista Ultimate 64 bit, I know there is a windows media player
listed under programs x86, and under just programs. I take it, that is a 32
bit wmp listed under the programs x86, and a 64 bit wmp listed under just
programs?
So, if I have wmp open, is there an easy way to tell, which one is open from
within wmp? Like in IE7, if you click on help and about, it lists the 64 bit
version as 64 bit, anything similar in WMP?
Thanks,

SATA RAID 2 with AMCC 9950 SE SATA 2 Conroller in x64
I just made an interesting discovery, after *two years* with my Maxim
PC "Dream Machine Plus." I had built an x64 dream server with a Tyan
K8WE (S2895) motherboard, Dual Opteron 270s (all I could afford at the
time), 8 GB of memory, a *brand new, latest and greatest AMCC 3ware
9950 SE RAID controller, and four new Hitachi drives. This RAID
controller was one of the first RAID controllers on the market to
support SATA 2 naively.
At the time I originally installed the drives.I called Hitachi Global
Technologies technical support to make certain that the drives were
configured to run in SATA 2 mode. I was assured that they shipped as
SATA 2 drives. I proceeded to set up a RAID 5 array.
I had always had difficult with finding all four drives powering up
properly at boot, and I often had to rebuild my array. As I had a PC
Power & Cooling 1 KW power supply, I knew that power was *not* my
problem.
I just recently learned, by using the log on the controller, that the
drives were all running in SATA I mode. Hitachi had been *wrong.* I
had to use the "Hitachi Feature Tool" to individually change a setting
in *each* of the four drives to set them for SATA II. I was a bit
angry that (a) Hitachi had misled me and (b) it took me so long to
find out.
I am posting to this forum because other users may be unaware that
their "SATA 2" drives are actually running at SATA 1. Unless one
changes a setting in the drive's BIOS, the drive remains SATA 1.
Perhaps there is an easy way to know the SATA setting of the drive,
via some sort of Windows utility; but I did not know of one. In the
future I will always check in advance.

Hard drive problems with winxp x64
This is the story...
I recently bought some new parts for an old computer, one of them being a
sata drive. I went through the hassle of formatting that and now I have x64
on that drive and it is my primary boot drive. But I have two other drives
from the old computer that are IDE. I have them plugged in one as master and
one as slave. All three hardrives show up on device manager and disk
manager. But the slave IDE drive, 300gb, is not showing up on "my computer",
and in disk manager it says that it is unallocated. This hard drive was
slave to the other IDE drive with my old set up and work perfectly fine. I
used a certain disk recovery program to look at the hard drive and it says
that it still has all the old files.
Now the other drive, the Master IDE says that it is only 31.4 gbs and has
nothing on it. It is an 80gb drive and it has the old winxp x32bit on it and
other files, probably about 40gbs worth. But the catch is when I try to boot
up with that drive it says that it is corrupt. When I ran the same recovery
program it says that the partition seems too small.
What the hell is going on... And how can i fix this with out losing all of
my files... Tag: Nero 7 updated Tag: 58243

Problem with RAID/Install
I am having a problem installing XP64 on a RAID 5 setup. I have:
XP64 (June 2006)
Intel DX38BT
BIOS = 1521 (latest)
Intel RAID driver = 7.8.0.1012 (latest, XP64 version)
Intel QX9650
Corsair DDR3 RAM - 2 x 2GB
Western Digital SATA-II 7200RPM 160GB x 4
In a non-RAID setup XP64 installs and runs perfectly. When I switch to RAID5
via CMOS settings and use the F6 driver installation method the installation
fails.
I have the F6 drivers on floppy. F6-ing at the beginning of setup correctly
asks for drivers at the appropriate time. Selecting ICH9 (the appropriate
disk hardware on the board) is accepted at the time of driver loading, but
when it gets to the "Press enter to install Windows" screen pressing enter
results in a "No hard drives were found on your system" error.
In looking at the INF and txtsetup.oem files on the floppy I found that the
ICH9 entries pointed to device 2922:
%PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2922&CC_0106.DeviceDesc% = iaStor_Inst,
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2922&CC_0106
But my computer (when running non-RAID) reports the devices as 2920 and
2926. I assumed this was causing the problem (and wondered why devices 2920
and 2926 were not included in the DX38BT driver I downloaded) and added the
appropriate entries hoping that this would allow windows setup to find the
drives. No change in behavior.
I've considered trying to slipstream the drivers onto a new CD, but couldn't
see any reason why the F6 method was failing that slipstreaming might help.
Any ideas on how to resolve this problem? Tag: Nero 7 updated Tag: 58125

problems I had experienced previously.
Over the past few days, every time I booted it would tell there are new
updates - and yesterday it also downloaded and installed SP1. Every since
then, when I shut down I briefly get an error message flash up onto the
screen right at the end and then Vista will reboot instead of shutting the
machine off. During this reboot, it now takes me to a screen where I have to
select the 'Boot Windows normally' before the machine takes me to the Windows
login screen.
Anybody have any clues about this one??

Add Network Location. IE x86 and IE x64. Settings in Guest account.
Hello!
1. Windows Vista x64 shows an error message
"Add Network Location
The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another."
after clicking Next in "Specify the location of your website
Type the address of the website, FTP site, or network location that this
shortcut will open" window.
The folder is http://files.akado.ru/slide/files/51796441/home/
I can add the Network Location in Windows XP by doing the same.
Norton Internet Security 2008 is installed.
The account is administrative.
2. IE x86 crashes during opening a page when IE x64 is open.
3. Windows does not allow to turn on the language bar and input a switch
language keyboard shortcut in Guest account: it turns language bar and
shortcut off after clicking "Apply".
Sincerely,
Dima Tag: Nero 7 updated Tag: 58112
