I am a student at Purdue University majoring in Computational Physics. I
currently own a license for Windows XP Professional and have just bought a
new Pentium D processor computer from Dell with which I would like to code
some new Win64 applications. I am trying to find a way to either trade in my
existing copy of Windows XP Pro or buy Win x64 Pro so that I may do that. I
was not able to select the new x64 Windows when I bought my computer and I
saw that the technology advancement program has since past. I am not
particularly interested in the trial version as I am not interested in
reinstalling my machine every 4 months (I am sure you understand). Is there
any way I could LEGALLY obtain a copy. Your help would be greatly
appreciated. Please email me your answer.

Regards,

William Mortl

There are a wealth of online retailers who sell OEM/System Builder copies of
Windows with "qualifying hardware". This is usually quite liberally
interpretted (a $2.99 refurbed mouse, for example, or a system fan.) The
same should be true of any local system builder you work with.

Online retailers I've used and trust include:

www.ncix.com
www.directron.com
www.newegg.com
www.zipzoomfly.com
www.planetamd64.com

You could try MSDNAA, a program that gives access to free Microsoft
software, including Windows x64, to school departments that have signed up
(a list is at http://www.msdnaa.net/search/SchoolSearchUS.aspx). If you're
not majoring in any of the them, you might want to see if taking a course in
one qualifies you (it works that way at my university).
