    - Another question about vista x32 to x64 I know this has been asked a million times but i cannot seem to find the answer I need, but i may be just overlooking it. I currently have x32 vista that came with my laptop and would like to upgrade to x64 vista. Is there any way to do this without having to buy another vista operating system?     - Vista problems 64 bit and 32 bit stability This is part suggestion, part discussion, part complaint ... (a rant?) Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit I've been using Vista for some months now and I have to say I am deeply unhappy with the OS. I have it running on a Thinkpad T61 (2GHz x 2, 800 MHz FSB), 4GB RAM, 160 5400 SATA, nVidia NVS140m, etc. In my first outing I tried Vista 64bit so I could fully utilise all 4GB of RAM. Yes, while the RAM is available my feeling was that the performance of the laptop was below that of my previous Acer TM803 with 2GB with XP. Initially I had issues because of a known broadcast issue with DHCP and older routers - I could not get Wireless working with DHCP on my Linksys ADSL router. I did find the registry resolve for this but elected in the mean time to stop using DHCP as it was simpler (especially when rebuilding, etc). I would just hate to be a typical consumer user trying to deal with this O/S. I believe it would be unworkable for users with no technical background. Apart from the perception of general slow performance I felt beset by issues where apps., services, browsers, etc, simply stopped responding and had to be killed off, or worse, the computer had to be restarted. In terms of restarting the computer, that wasn't pretty either as more often than not it would fail to shut down properly, and then take an absolute age to start up again. I've also had issues where the computer wouldn't suspend or hibernate properly leading me to leave it on full-power mode most of the time (a laptop ...). I also seemed to have a lot of problems with dropping wireless connection that I hadn't previously experienced on Windows XP, and didn't experience when I later retried XP on this system. So; it was problems compounded with problems and more problems, and I'm LIVID at the amount of time I've wasted in front of what should have been a blisteringly fast laptop. It, along with Vista, and Office 2007, where not a trivial investment. Summary: * Well, it's unstable. Full stop. It might be the apps., but surely backward compatability is a watchword when rolling out an o/s? * Perhaps there are driver issues too; but aren't all of the drivers for 64bit certified by Microsoft? * Superfetch seems to be an issue. It certainly cannot learn anything useful about my usage patterns if the PC is so unstable I have to keep rebooting it. I actually felt that 64 bit Vista provided a better user experience when SuperFetch was disabled. Is part of the problem here that it's caching native 64bit and WOW libraries on startup thus taking an age to get going and consuming almost 2GB for cache before I've actually had a chance to do anything with the computer? [If the kernel worked properly there probably won't be any need for ReadyBoost.] * UAC seems to be a big problem for existing applications. * There seems to be issues in IE where the browser hangs on when it's waiting on something (eg: network response or content rendering or something). Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit Having failed miserably with 64 bit I went back to 32 bit. This required that I gave away 1GB of RAM but appeared otherwise to be a little more stable. I still have problems with: * Some applications failing to start/respond. * Shutdown/suspend/hibernate issues. There's also some silly bugs in some of the apps. for example: * Attemping to burn a AVI file to DVD with Windows DVD maker; gets to 79.9% and then just sits forever with no progress, no discernable error, etc. Who tested this stuff? * If I try to use Windows Backup to backup to a disk which I previously used for a backup and then reformatted (same name), it still insists there are files backed up on the drive ... In general, my experience with Vista seems to be summarized by wait-wait-retry-kill-retry-reboot-power-off-restart-wait-wait. WHAT DO I WANT: * I spent a lot of money on the hardware and software. The combination DOES NOT LIVE UP TO THE PROMISE. I want a working FAST and STABLE system. * I want some level of granular control over the operation of the ReadyBoost and SuperFetch features as well as an easy way to identify and stop components in the system I don't need (which properly explains them, what they do and what the impact is of turning them off). * There are virtually no 64 bit applications for 64 bit Vista. Why can't you just allow 32 bit Vista to access > 4GB on systems that allow this? I've read lot's of forums about PAE/3GB/36bit/40bit addressing etc. This would allow for a leaner O/S which could still access larger amounts of RAM though limiting individual process address spaces; I think most people wouldn't have a problem with that. Works in Windows 32bit Servers - why not for Vista? RIGHT NOW: I'm trying out Linux distributions to see which ones come with the best h/w support for my T61.     - Pinging 1394 cable system from Network bridge I need to make network bridge with 1394 and LAN adapter PC-B Traffic flows between A to B on Ethernet and traffic between B to C goes on 1394 interface (Firewire) PC-A contain Ethernet card only. PC-B contains both Ethernet card & 1394 interface card. PC-C contains 1394 interface card only. I am able to ping either PC-A to B (Ethernet card) I am able to ping either PC-B to C (1394 interface) I am unable to ping either from B to C (1394 interface) or vice versa after making the network bridge. Do I need to make any changes in Network Bridge after creating it. I have already installed 1394 drivers in PC-C, because 1394 net adapter is not enabled in Device manager. Network Bridge display under the Network adapters as â??MAC miniportâ?? in device manager. 1394 and Ethernet adapter also displaying in device manager under the Network adapters OS: Windows XP with SP2.     - Browser Start-up I use Firefox as the default browser in Win Vista HP 64 bit. It works with no problem when running, and has no issues otherwise. The problem is when launching. I get a Error? A box pops up stating "Windows cannot find "TYPED URL" . Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again" After a second, my Firefox opens as normal and I can browse the internet as I wish. Firefox is set as the default browser so I don't understand why this happens... And is there a way to stop this message from coming up??     - The Msdia80.dll file in wrong partitition Hi all: I want to replace a 250 GB hard drive with a larger capacity drive but after transferring all the recorded tv in the recorded tv file on the drive, I am left with a Msdia80.dll file on the same partition that is apparently installed in the wrong place. It is part of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package I think. I did not download and install this package but I think it might have been part of either Vista x64 SP1 or more likely part of AVGFree 8.0. which I have since uninstalled thru the control panel because it caused 100% cpu usage during scans of my C: drive on a Q6600 cpu! Most likely just deleting the Msdia80.dll file will cause all sorts of problems? I Googled for info about the misplaced dll file and Microsoft has a hotfix for the problem.........but it only if the dll file is in the wrong folder on the boot drive. This dll is on a storage drive which only had a recorded tv folder in one partition and another partition (D:) which contains a 40GB "complete PC Backup" set up with Vista Ultimate. I really don't know what programs use Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package but I am wondering if I would have all sorts of problems if I just uninstalled that package and the dll in the wrong folder would disappear or I could safefly delete it then? My other software programs that may/or may not need Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package are Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader AVG Free 7.5, Microsoft Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system, Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Microsoft Reader and MSXML 4.0 SP2 and MSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK. So............should I just uninstall Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package and Visual C++Runtime Setup Package (x64) shown in my programs list to get rid of the misplaced dll and if that doesn't do it, then try to delete it? It isn't causing any problems other than keeping me from replacing the drive it's on.     - Memory Increase for Vista Ultimate 64-bit? The maximum memory one could have in Windows XP x64 was 4 GB per CPU. In Vista Ultimate you can have 128 GB total. (I still have the same 2 CPUs and 8 GB of memory.) Is there any advantage to add 8 more GB of memory to the 8 GB I already have to make a total of 16 GB? I have a Tyan motherboard which can accept up to 8, 2 GB DIMMs. I currently have 8 GB, so I could add 4 more DIMMs. I do not want to waste money, as I really want a new monitor, but I am interested in the possibility of adding more memory if Windows would really take advantage of it. I searched "Microsoft. public" for "64-bit", and this group was found. But because it did not specifically have the word "Vista" in the name, I assume it is a Windows XP 64-bit group. Does anyone know the best group for Vista 64-bit postings? This brings up a small beef I have: Namely, if one searches on the web for "Vista software", one often sees "Vista compatible" mentioned (or some such phrasing), but rarely does one find "Vista 32-bit compatible" and "Vista 64-bit compatible", and especially "Vista 64-bit Native" listed under "system requirements". Why do vendors so frequently fail to specify which *exact* platform there software is intended to run on? And now, I visit the Microsoft news server and here I seem to run into a similar issue.     - Windows Vista x64 searches 5 times longer than Windows XP! Hello! Why does Windows Vista x64 search so long, especially when the progress in the bar is at the end and the ring is rolling (a replacement for the sand glass)? When a search is not "nearly instantaneous" it takes nearly forever. That is, when you ask for an Advanced Search of Computer, the bar first goes half-way across fairly quickly. Then it goes more slowly to about 3/4 of the way, appearing to redraw the bar every second or so, then more slowly still to 7/8, etc., getting closer to the end with each redraw - but never quite reaching the end. I watch hopefully as it gets to the little down-pointing triangle, thinking that it will give up when it gets there and report that it can't find what it's searching for. But it doesn't. It keeps creeping further, past the vertical separator at the end of the Address Bar, and then at a maddeningly slow pace across the red "X" and... hours later, the green bar is still being redrawn and it STILL hasn't got to the end.     - Wincolor installation failure on x64 I'm desperately trying to install Wincolor on XP Pro x64. (I've been hit by two Samsung displays having different LCD panels in them!). However, when I try to install it, I get the message: "Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet for Windows XP requires that your computer in running Windows XP SP2 and that you have administrative or install privileges on your computer." Well, according to my system properties I am running Service Pack 2, running Windows XP, and I'm logged in as administrator. If I assume it's a problem with compatibility, then what am I supposed to do to synch up my two LCD displays? All the web seems to say is 'install Wincolor'. Would that I could!     - Superfetch bug I've been running Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit for over about a year and then within the last week or two I noticed that the disk access light was active all the time. After a few hours of investigation I discovered I could get it to shut off by shutting down the Superfetch service. I have Vista Ultimate 64 with MSFT's Intellimouse Explorer 4.0a mouse and Intellipoint software 6.20.182.0 When I turn off my PC I usually lose the pointer speed setting and find it's been reset to the middle postition which is faster than I want. Anyone know of a similar problem or, better yet, a fix?     - Vista x64 and x32 activation status Dear all, I am ordering a custom-made PC and I will be getting an OEM version of Vista Ultimate. Now the choice is mine if it is x32 or x64 I am getting. The x64 version has all the drivers for all the hardware I require, and also has the option of accessing more than 4GB of RAM, which I am interested in. The issue is that if I get the computer with Vista Ultimate x64 OEM and I activate the copy, later down the line I may find that I encounter huge compatibility issues that force me to revert to an x32 version. With x64 version's being activated already, if I install x32 OEM Vista Ultimate (the system builder told me he could provide me with the relevant DVD media) afterwards on the same PC, with the same product key, will the activation still work? There would be no hardware changes, but there would be a change in the Vista flavour, from x64 to x32. I supose the underlying question is if the activation takes into account BOTH the hardware components AND the Vista flavour (i.e. x32 or x64), or just the hardware components?     - hotkey.sys unable to run under restricted user group Hi, I am having issues attempting to load Acer's hotkey.sys under a non-administrative account. The notebook is a AMD T64 running XP 64. The hotkey.sys driver is needed to access the Bluetooth and WLAN on/off buttons while operating under Windows. It is located in the syswow64/drivers folder. However, unless I give the user adminstrator rights, it is impossible to load this driver. Even under poweruser group the hotkey.sys will not load. I can not give my users adminstrative rights of course, so I am stuck with them not being able to use WLAN functions while on biz trips. Any idea? Thanks.     - Yet another question about x86 & x64 Vista Upgrade After much reading and research trying to find out what included both 32bit & 64bit, and correct me if I'm wrong at any point, the ONLY full retail version that actually comes with both is Ultimate, while all other retail versions are eligible for the alternate media, meaning that you walk out of the store with the 32 bit and can order the 64bit DVD from Microsoft for the cost of S&H. I am also under the impression that the OEM versions can only be purchased with only 32bit or 64bit and are NOT eligible for the alternate media "deal".     - Context menu problem I run Server 2003 64 bits. Before, I used Windows 2000 Pro. I had a small hexedit program (Yuri Software HEdit), that installed in the context menu without problem. This 32 bits program consists of 2 parts: an .exe and a .dll file. I recently installed the same program under Server 2003 64 bits. The program works fine, except for the fact it does not appear in the file's context menu. In the registry, it is present in HKCR\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers. On the other hand I installed a compression program, 7zip (64 bits version), that do appears in the context menu. Anybody an idea of what I have to do to make the program appear in the context menu?     - Migrating from XP x64 to Vista Ultimate 64-bit Hi Helpful Group! :-) I thought I'd make a *positive* post for a change. I actually got something to work! I migrated my system from XP Professional x64 to Vista Ultimate 64- bit. I expected a nightmare, as I had a relatively old Tyan K8WE (S2895) motherboard and I was using Opteron 270 CPUs. I also had a beta driver and BIOS for my AMCC 3ware 9550SX SATA2 RAID card. I can not say it was easy, as it took me several nights of being up until 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. to get the old machine ready, but the actually *install* of Vista was almost painless. It seemed as if it took less than one hour. I have then spent several days reinstalling software. The machine, of course, runs *worse,* but I now have more software options. Apple iTunes, for example, correctly recognizes and installs on my operating system. I have a long ways to go, but I wanted to encourage others to make the switch *if* they need to.     - Odd display problem - desktop bigger then monitor Here is an odd problem - I'm using an SIS mother board and an SIS chipset. The monitor is a Sony HMD1240. If I put the video into any mode > 1024x768, the desktop will become larger then the monitor, and as I move my mouse around, the desktop will scroll back and forth. I then loaded Xp32 via the XP32 cd (everything seems to be working as I am connected to the internet) I now want to copy SP3 for Xp32 from my cd rom drive I can "see"the SP3 file,but when I try to copy it I get an error box stating the "parameter is incorrect" How do I correct this so I can copy a file from the cd rom? Hello, Recently my pc crashed all of a sudden and now my pc boots normally, windows loads fine but when it actually starts up, like the desktop and startup apps etc, it gives my a long pause of about ~40 seconds with nothing but a light aqua screen and the mouse pointer and only after this pause it starts to load fine. Although these drivers support GeForce 6 & 7 series, nVidia recommend the
earlier WHQL 169.2x drivers for the GeForce 6 & 7 series.

The 175.16s are recommended only for GeForce 8 & 9 series cards.
