64-bit and 32-bit handles
Hi,
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa384203.aspx
"Handles to named objects such as mutexes, semaphores, and file handles can
all be shared."
Does this mean that I can use DuplicateHandle in a 64-bit process and pass
the duplicated handle truncated to 32-bits to the appropriate 32-bit process
and call DuplicateHandle in a 32-bit process and pass the duplicated handle
zero-extended to 64-bits to the appropriate 64-bit process?
Thanks for your help.

How to restore dual boot of xp 32 & win 64
I got this from the planet 64 amd newsgroup.
I had winxp 64 installed.I then installed Vista RC2 build 5744. I had a copy
of Xp home kicking around and thought I would load it ,so when vista comes
out I will use it to upgrade to vista. This way I can keep my win xp 64 &
dual boot. After installing XPhome I could not dual boot error message was
(ntoskrnl.exe is corrupted or missing) I tried everything I could think of
to fix the dual boot. I fail miserbly. I came accross this msg. in the
newsgroups on Plantnet64 amd. I thought I would give this a try. I followed
the instructions carefully. It worked I now can boot vista using (Vista Pro
Boot Manager). I can boot to vista Or Xp64 Or xp home 32. If u have had a
hard time setting up dual boot after installing xp home try this it worked
for me.
To restore your dual boot of XP64 and XP32 you will need to run the recovery
console from the XP32 install CD.
When it asks you which installation you want to log on to make sure you log
onto
the XP64 installation.
From there you should run the command "bootcfg /list"
This will find and list all currently installed versions of windows on your
system. After you run that you will need to run "bootcfg /rebuild"
It will then search for the needed boot information you will get a prompt
such as
this:
Total identified Windows Installs: 2
[1] C:Windows
[2] D:Windows
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
You should type "all" and hit enter
From there you will be asked to Enter the Load Identifier.
This is the name of the operating system. When you receive this message,
type the
name of your operating system, and then press enter.
This is either Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Microsoft Windows XP
Home
Edition.
Then you will be asked to enter OS load options:
When you receive this message, type "/fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn" (for
XP32)or
"/fastdetect /NoExecute" (for XP64) then press enter.
You will be asked the same questions for each OS you have installed.
after you have done this you will type "exit". the system will reboot.
You may notice that there are 3 choices after using this to repair the dual
boot.
if this happens goto the boot.ini file in the root of C: and open it with
wordpad
or notepad. remove the extra line and save the file.
Make sure that when you do this that the box for "always use this program to
open
this kind of file" is unchecked.
You should be able to boot into both OSs properly now.

2k3r2 64bit - cannot run networked applications
All:
(details)
Probably a silly question but I just added an x64 r2 server to our
domain. it is not a DC or a GC. I have successfully added the server
to the domain. I am logged on a Domain Administrator.
(issues)
I cannot run any application on a network share. I have 1 TB in a raid
array as D:. I've created a network share for D: in A/D as W:\. I
cannot run any applications from W:, even though this is locally D:\.
Running the same apps from D:\ works perfectly fine with no alteration.
None of the A/D users or permissions or shares are 'new', meaning that
the same setup has been working for the last 9 months since I built the
domain, and still works fine on all the other shares/servers/pc's.
I can browse everything. I can take ownership. The Compatibilty tab is
greyed out however.

Question: Mounting partition to NTFS folder. Quirky?
Hey all,
I recently bought a 300GB SATA drive. It installed beautifully, I got
the BIOS configured, Windows found drivers for the device without me
even having to do anything, blah blah blah. I used the LDMS to split
the drive into two partitions: the first is 200GB and the second is
about 80GB (the rest being eaten by the Retail Hard Drive Size
Exaggeration Monster).
I then mounted the partition into an NTFS folder, and tried to copy
some files. Unfortunately, the copy failed almost immediately, saying
that the file could not be found. I found this odd, as the file was
certainly there. So I tried to delete the folder it created. Explorer
acted as if the folder were in use, saying Access Denied.
I was very confused about this bizarre behavior. I have another
partition on an IDE drive mounted into a folder, and it works great. I
tried reformatting the partition again, changing the cluster size,
making sure the cable was plugged in well, and (of course) rebooting. I
also ran Scandisk, which found no errors.
As a last resort, I mapped the drive to a drive letter (rather than a
folder). To my great surprise, everything worked. The files I could not
previously copy (it is worth noting that it was the same files each
time which refused to copy) now copied perfectly, and I could delete
the previously undeletable folders. To make sure I wasn't going crazy,
I remounted it into a folder. Bam, the same files refused to copy, and
the folders gave Access Denied errors again.
I really want to mount this partition in a folder. Can anyone give me
hints as to what I might be doing wrong about this? Is it a SATA/IDE
issue, since that's the only difference between the partition I have
mounted to a folder and the ones which are failing?
More standard info:
-The SATA drivers I'm using are apparently included with Windows. My
motherboard manufacturer does not have 64-bit drivers for the SATA
interface. The motherboard is an nForce 3 chipset (MSI K8N Neo2).
Thanks much,

x64 Beta Test Opportunity
I realize that most of the folks here are basically end users - we don't get
all that many Server questions, after all. But at least I'm reasonably sure
you all have at least one x64 machine or are thinking about one. Which would
be cool for some products, but here's a chance for those of you with some
_serious_ hardware to get in on the ground floor of a new Microsoft server
offering - code name is Centro, and a description and a link to apply for
the beta are in Kevin Beares blog, here:
http://blogs.technet.com/kevin_beares/archive/2006/10/24/so-what-is-centro-you-ask.aspx
I know that if Kevin is running the beta, or heavily involved, it will be
fun and we'll have good communications. But before you all go running over
to his site, let me warn you up front. The MINIMUM requirement is 3 - x64
machines to use as servers, and at least two client machines. That's a
serious hardware hurdle, but the result looks like it's going to be a really
cool and interesting product. So, if you're interested, now is definitely
the time to apply.
I hope to see at least some of you there.

Q: programmable restart of a 64-bit driver from a 32-bit application
Hello,
we have an application that need to restart network driver to apply
configuration changes without restarting the system. We are using
SetupDi* functions to do this.
The 32-bits version of the application works fine on 32-bits system as
well as 64-bits version works fine on the 64-bits Windows. But in case
of 32-bits application on 64-bits system the SetupDiCallClassInstaller()
function returns FALSE and reports 0xE0000235 code through GetLastError().
Is there a possibility to restart driver or just to propagate the

BSOD in ksthunk.sys when attempting kernel streaming audio
Please provide any feedback regarding the feasibility of audio output
by bypassing windows mixer and using either Kernel Streaming audio or
ASIO4ALL drivers in WinXP Pro 64 bit. The objective is bitperfect
SPDIF pass-through to to external AV receiver.
I have been reading for 2 weeks everything available on the issue (very
scarce info on x64 XP though), and attempted several OS **clean**
installs, using official and non-official drivers, every time with the
same result: blue screens caused by ksthunk.sys, immediately after
either:
a) using latest Winamp with kernel streaming output plugin, or
b) attempting to run latest Asio4All offline settings panel
However, the system can happily play via SPDIF Dolby Surround DVDs, AC3
xvid/divx, and some ac3 audio files (but not all ac3, neither Dolby or
DTS wavs) using VLC, ffdshow and AC3 filter.
Can XP Pro x64 do kernel streaming, or is it a hardware issue? If you

Bugcheck: STOP 0x50 - Sanity: Losing
Greetings everyone,
This post is a follow-up to a previous post of mine from a while back,
titled "System Crash - STOP 0x50", so firstly, if you want some extra
background please quickly read that post!
OK, this post is going to be fairly long, as I am going to lay out
everything I know about the problem and have tried to rectify it, in the
desperate hope someone can offer some help to solve the issue, because I am
at my wits end.
Issue Summary:
I am getting STOP 0x50 bugchecks (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA) frequently
when doing certain tasks.
Steps to reproduce:
I have managed to pinpoint the exact activity required in order to cause the
bugcheck. Namely, I must be running Winamp (v.5.32 - Current - x86) while
also using WinImage (v.8.0.8000 - Current - x64). Winamp is a media player,
as I'm sure most of you would be aware :) WinImage is a floppy image editing
application, allowing the creation and modification of a diverse range of
floppy disk image formats. Note that the bugcheck will not occur
immediately, but will occur at some point during the continual concurrent
use of these two applications. The time the bugcheck takes to manifest
appears to be random, anywhere between 10 minutes and hours. I am still
unsure if system uptime has any real impact on the time taken for the issue
to manifest (e.g. quicker to crash after system has been up for 24+ hrs than
from a fresh reboot).
Hardware Information:
The following is a list of the machines "critical" hardware. I have excluded
minor components such as keyboard and mouse, as well as components highly
unlikely to be the (potential) cause, such as hard-drives and
optical-drives. Please feel free to request more detailed hardware
information if you think it would help in any way! All of the below system
components are running their latest respective drivers.
***Mainboard: ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe
***Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+
***Memory: Kingston DDR 2x1024MB
***Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT
***Audio: Creative Audigy 4
System Configuration:
The system is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 - Enterprise x64
Edition and is kept up-to-date with updates via the Microsoft Updates
web-site and Automatic Updates. The system is configured to output kernel
memory dumps, and has 4096MB of virtual memory.
Troubleshooting Steps:
1. The system has had Windows Memory Diagnostics run in extended test mode
for over 24 hrs straight with no errors recorded.
2. The system has had Stress Prime 2004 Orthos Edition v.0.41.110.18 run in
blend mode (stress both CPU and RAM) for over 24 hrs straight with no errors
recorded. For those unfamiliar with this program, it is based on Prime95 and
adds a number of useful features, including dual core support. The test
places the CPU and RAM of the system under extreme pressure, and is
frequently used to stress test a machine to the maximum.
3. The system has had Debugging Tools for Windows 64-bit installed for
kernel memory crash dump analysis. This is way out of my league, as I have
no expertise in the analysis of system memory crash dumps, but I have
managed to gleam a number of useful bits of information from a basic
analysis of the dumps. See below for further details.
4. The system has had Driver Verifier enabled with custom settings in an
attempt to help isolate the problem (unsuccessful thus far). See below for
further details.
5. The user has posted a desperate plea for help to the
microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general newsgroup ;)
Debugging Tools for Windows 64-bit:
I have completed some very basic analysis of the kernel memory crash dumps
through the use of WinDbg, and have made a few observations:
***Winamp.exe is always cited as the responsible process. However, if this
is in fact true, I believe WinImage to be the "catalyst" for the bugcheck to
occur, as I can run Winamp for seemingly any period of time without issue.
It is only when used in conjunction with WinImage that the bugcheck occurs.
***The win32k!NtUserfnINDEVICECHANGE+0x1bb instruction is always listed as
the ultimate culprit, and is always the final instruction in the stack trace
before the page fault instructions. I have been desperately trying to find
any information on this reference, yet have come up with nothing. Can anyone
share any further light on this other than it's obvious implied function
judging from its name?
I have attached the latest debug output from WinDbg after running an
!analyze -v on the latest crash dump, maybe someone much more qualified than
I can gleam some more useful information from it? If anyone actually wants a
copy of the crash dump, let me know, but I realise that's asking a lot.
Driver Verifier:
The Windows Driver Verifier has been enabled with custom settings as
follows:
***Special pool
***Pool tracking
***Force IRQL checking
***All non Microsoft Corporation drivers have been selected for
verification.
Once again, this kind of tool is well out of my expertise, so I'm uncertain
if these are "good" settings. Thus far, they haven't revealed anything
interesting in the form of different bugcheck messages or different data
during the analysis of the latest kernel memory crash dump.
Random Thoughts:
1. I am 99% certain that the issue is not caused by a hardware problem. I
draw this conclusion from two lines of reasoning; the system is able to
successfully complete all diagnostics I have thrown at it, including ones
involving extreme system stress, and the system is able to run Windows XP
Professional (32-bit) without issue, which was the previous operating system
in use.
2. I am beginning to wonder if the problem lies in win32k.sys itself, and is
not a driver issue. This is mainly because I have had absolutely zero
success in isolating the problem to a specific driver. However, I'm really
not qualified to make that kind of conclusion, just voicing my thoughts.
3. Would changing the crash dump type to a complete memory dump be at all
beneficial? Could it possibly reveal more through something as simple as the
standard !analyze -v command in WinDbg?
That about covers everything I can think up for now. Apologies for the
length of this post, however, I'm just trying to provide as much information
as possible in the hope some of it may lead to a solution.
Thanks in advance for any help at all!

language bar is not working in x64 only
I have installed Vista RTM enterprise version at work and home. At work I run
a 32-bit machine and 64 bit at home. The language bar install and works fine
with the 32 bit, but will refuse to appear with the 64 bit. I have Office
2007 on both machines.
I have tried removing all keyboard input languages but English and adding
one back, but it will not appear. This appears to be a bug as the language
bar option is not even displayed in the taskbar toolbar options.
Can anyone with Vista x64 add an additional language and get the bar to
appear? Tag: NVidia 97.44's for x64 are out Tag: 41608

Ghost menu's
I have users who have problems with parts of their Windows XP x64 system
appear when they are using a piece of software, by SolidWorks, they are on
Solidworks 2007 x64 edition and using NVIDIA with a x64 bit driver that
SolidWorks approves to work for their system.
SolidWorks and NVIDIA swear it is WINDOWS, and it seems that it's a guessing
game for who is responsible.
Users often have problems where they select, say File, from the File Menu
and part of that will NOT go away, you need to log off and on again for the
window part or menu to go away. It ghosts and blocks all other windows. It
stays there like you have a burned in image, but it is as if you still kept
it. Sorta like how one window blocks another. It is on multiple people's
system who have been used with Symantec Ghost, to create an exact copy of
their system for network builds for our corporate network. It is strange. Tag: NVidia 97.44's for x64 are out Tag: 41601

Need help with Virtual PC 2007
I installed Virtual PC 2007 on XP professional 64 bit edition. Once I boot
to the virtual environment, all I have is a CDrom drive and a floppy drive.
I did create a virtual hard drive but I cannot see it in the virtual
environment. Is there supposed to be a virtual hard drive available? If
so, I cannot find it.
I followed the instructions for installing an operating system on the
virtual hard drive but when I ran the setup program for win95 it didnt do
anything and just put me back at the a: drive cursor.
Does anyone know how to use Virtual PC 2007? Am I doing something wrong? I
read the help and it says I should be able to install an operating system on
it but there is no mention of what the Hard drive letter is in the virtual
environment.
Is XP pro 64 not supported?
Thank You

Can someone tell me whether Wombats live only in Australia,
or also on other continents?
Apart from zoos, of course.

Simple Question
I'd like to combine several of the Office Server products on one server. Some
of the office servers are 64 bit only and some are 32 bit. If I install them
on a 64 bit server using a 64 bit OS, will the 32 bit servers install and
function properly inside of a 64 bit OS?
Is there a list of Office products that shows which are 64 bit only and
which support both 32 and 64 bit? The system requirements on the MS site
don't seem to go into detail for all the products. Tag: NVidia 97.44's for x64 are out Tag: 41546
