    - Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 Hello, all. I'm upgrading an environment from a Windows 2000/2003 DC to include our new Dell NAS that has WSS 2003 R2. The server is on our Active Directory domain and I have upgraded our Active Directory from version 30 to 31 to take advantage of R2 features. One of the challenges that I'm facing is trying to move some print-server functionality from our old Windows 2000 server to the new NAS running WSS 2003 R2. I have created a couple printers and installed the drivers that Windows found. However, from an existing 2000 Server, I tried creating a new printer to the NAS. It stated that there were no 32-bit drivers found and then gave me the option to select OK or CANCEL. OK simply makes me browse locally for drivers. I have googled around and cannot seem to find what I need to do in order to get the 32-bit drivers for my servers and XP clients installed on the NAS.     - XP Professional x64 Edition Hangs On Last Step of Install Process Hello All, I am running the following: AMD Opteron 175 Dual Core CPU ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe with the newest BIOS revision (4) 1GB Corsair XMS Memory Modules (1) 74GB Western Digital Raptor Hard Drive connected to the nforce4 SATA primary channel (1) Western Digital 400GB WD4000KD Hard Drive connected to the nforce SATA secondary channel I also have a Pioneer DVD R/RW connected to the primary channel on the PATA connector. The DVD drive is set to cable select as well. (2) nVidia 7900GT PCI-E video cards in SLI I've had Windows XP Professsional (32-bit version) running for well over a year on this machine with no problems at all. I have Windows XP Professional x64 Edition but every time I try to boot from the CD the installation process stops at "Setup is starting Windows".     - missing cmd.exe I don't know if this is a virus or what. i am running xp64 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cmd.exe can no longer be found by the file explorer. start->run c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe fails with file not found explorer only finds a copy at wow64\cmd.exe using the wow64\cmd.exe I was able top find the cmd.exe still exists in system32 and if I copy the file out to the root of the drive, it works fine copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\ start->run c:\cmd.exe ( works fine ) start->run c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe still fails, file not found. anyone have ideas about what's going on here ? a virus or what ?     - Insufficient resources to hibernate -> now ported to x64!! Yay! I used to run XP Pro x86 and got the dreaded "insufficient resources" error plenty to times while trying to hibernate with a machine with more than 1GB RAM. This problem's been documented in a few KB articles and if I remember correctly at least two hotfixes have been released over time to address this. I've seen plenty of discussions with claims that neither hotfixes completely take care of the problem in all instances. In any case, I never had this problem on x64--until now. Just for the record, here's the exact message (I noticed it's worded a little differently than the x86 version): Windows - System Error The system has failed to hibernate (the error code is 0xC000009A). Hibernation will be disabled until the system is restarted. One thing I did notice is that according to Task Manager, for this particular session, my memory usage peaked at around 2.2GB (I have 2GB physical memory). Typically this stays around/below 1.5GB, and I've *never* had this problem occur until now. I have all the latest fixes--Windows Update has nothing else to offer.     - Quick Q .. 32bit v 64bit (2003) system memory space Hello All, This may have been asked before, but I searched the postings and did not find what i was looking for. In the 32bit world, the OS gets 2GB of ram, and then the rest of the memory is diced up into 2GB chunks for applications. This can be changed from 2/2 to 1/3 when using 4GT. Now, under 2003 x64, does that same rule hold true? Is there a limited amount of " OS Memeory " space that is reserved for system operations, and the rest is available for applications (like SQL and Exchange) ? The end I am trying to reach is whether an IIS, or File and Print, server would actually benefit from more than 2GB of ram.     - WinXP 64 hanging up entering the Windows Desktop Hi all.. I did a clean install of WinXP Pro 64 on my new ASUS M2NPV-VM Socket AM2 motherboard, with an Athlon 64 Socket AM2 4000+. The OS loaded fine and came up with a regular desktop. I installed the drivers that came with my MB using the 'ASUSAll' install program (installs all necessary drivers in sequence with 4 reboots), finishing with a makedisk program to set up drivers for SATA drives (I have two new WD 320gb's plugged into the SATA sockets, but no raid config as yet). Since then, the PC will not fully load the desktop and hangs without bringing up the lower toolbar, desktop icons, etc. I can do a re-installe I suppose, but I have hoping for another solution.     - New Core 2 Duo box I spent the weekend shaking out my new Core 2 Duo E6600 box. XP Pro x64 installed in about fifteen minutes. It zips right along. When I said shaking out, I meant it literally. My primary optical drive suddenly wouldn't read a cd. After tearing my hair out for a couple of hours, one time when I ejected yet another cd a small label (Powered by Asus) fell out on to the floor. After that the optical drive worked just fine. I figure it was in the driver cd envelope and got dragged into the drive mechanism when I used the cd. So instead of debugging my system I delabelled it this weekend.     - Windows XP 64 and 32 networking I have been using Windows XP pro for a few years. Always able to get the computers networked together. I recently got a new computer. MSI 7125 board with AMD Athalon 64 bit 3500+. Then I installed Windows x64 on it and coulden't get it networked with the other Windows XP systems (32 bit). Initially I did install the 32 bit windows on the new computer (As I was waiting for the Windows x64 disc to arrive) and it worked fine. Networking: Westell B90-210015-04 DSL Modem (internet source) plugged into 64 bit computer via RJ45 cable (No 64 bit USB drivers from Westell so had to use the other connection). No problem so far. Internet works. Internet sharing on. Second RJ45 jack from 64 bit computer to a Linksys 5-port hub. And Hub connecting to other computers. When I had the 32 bit Windows XP installed on the 64 bit computer, it networked fine. Internet and file sharing. Then I recieved then installed the Windows X64. Thanks in advance for the help!!     - 15-20 Minute Delay Starting up XP 64 Hi I have a problem in that my system is waiting for about 15-20 minutes each time I have to restart. The problem occurs between windows load screen (with green scroll bar) and switching to the blue logon screen. The problem started to occur after my system crashed once. I had a similar problem with the x64 trial version too. If I start in safe mode it seems to pause on the file "c:\windows\system32\apcitabl.dat" Has anyone else experienced this or know someway to correct it? This is a nice little utility that allows the creation and burning of many image file types such as ISO, BIN, etc.. Buried in the program is a nice little utility that will seach the internet for the lastest firmware update for you DVD/CD drivers. It is supposed to be a replacement for DVD Decrypter but I still keep it arround anyway. Works fine under x64.     - Nero 7.2.7.0 is out Nero 7.2.7.0 is out. It seems to run fine under x64 except for Nero Home. I dont use it and have stopped installing it. I was getting an errors from Nero Home when I opened Nero Burning Rom. If you dont install it, you dont get them. The new version seems to burn well enough using a SATA Plextor 12x burner on x64 with an SATA HD installed.     - Things I need to know On Wednesday I should be receiving all the bits to build my new computer - based around a Conroe 2.67Ghz CPU and an Asus P5B Deluxe/WiFi Solo motherboard. The .icm file afterall is only a file which describes the colour characteristics of my monitor - but I would need a profile loader at startup, which is why I asked about the Colour Control Applet. If I buy a Core 2 Duo E6300 with XP Pro 32-bit pre-installed, can I expect all my software and peripherals I own now (and which work in XP Pro on a Pentium 4) to work fine in XP Pro 32-bit? (I do not want to ask my boss for money for a Core 2 Duo and then find out it will not do what I must have it do.) After Vista is released, and after I buy a retail copy, what do you think about me reformatting the entire drive, installing Vista (64-bit) as the only OS, and then using either Microsoft Virtual PC, Microsoft Virtual Server, or VMWare Workstation to run older OS's? I need to do testing in Vista, XP (32-bit), 2000, and 98. I even need to keep a Win 3.1 box around for development of a certain driver. I used to use Connectix Virtual PC to run Win 2000, NT, 98, and 3.1 on an old PIII. I just installed the free Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 on my P4 2.8GHz Win XP Pro Toshiba laptop with 2 GB RAM, and just created a Vista virtual drive, which runs slowly on this computer. It lets me test Vista, but it is only 32-bit. I would like to have a Vista 64-bit computer and then use virtual hard drives for all my old OS's, allowing me to start and stop them at will, instead of rebooting into the other OS (dual booting). If I do the above, is the Core 2 Duo E6300 powerful enough? It is the baby CPU of the Core 2 Duo line, but it is so much more powerful than my P4 that I anticipate it will seem like I am flying, compared to my P4. Is that right? Or should I get one of the more powerful Core 2 Duos. If I do what I described above (Vista as the only OS, then run Virtual PC with the older OS's), how much RAM should I ask my boss to buy? Do you think 2 GB is enough to run Vista plus one virtual OS? I think I should get 4 GB RAM, but I need some expert's help and advice to enable me to justify the extra cost. (I know RAM is the cheapest way to speed up a computer, but this is going to be the most expensive PC I have ever asked my boss to buy, and I need some facts to back up my request.     - XP 64 on a Dell Precision 670 I purchased a Dell Precision 670 that came with teh XP Pro (32 bit version). Several months ago, I ordered and rececied the Dell XP 64 bit upgrade disk. I have not installed it yet. I want to install it on a seperate hard drive and have access to both OSs. However, I am not sure how the liscencing works. If I install the 64 bit system and activate it, will the 32 bit system stop working?     - XP Service Pack 2 Update Notification Icon I have a notification icon in my taskbar that informs me that "support for Windows XP SP1 ends October 10, 2006" The "little blue star" icon. Right clicking on it shows several options, Including the one that asks to "Obtain XP Sevice Pack 2" I want this icon removed and taken of my system that I built myself from the motherboard on up. I do not wish to use XP Service Pack 2 and never will. I found that it was a piece of junk that caused so many problems it made it impossible to use the Internet, so I took it off my machine.     - Repair installation of win xp x64 stops at installing devices I have waited for hours at the "34 minures remaining milestone" but nothing happens. it just waits at that particular point indefinately.
