Common Access Card required for Logon to Network
What is required to make a Windows XP x64 bit system work with the CAC Card
(Smart Card reader).
We have a couple of Dell sytems with Dell smart card keyboards, but we
cannot make these systems CAC required for login.
When we attempt it, we get a Logon Message Dialog box that state "The card
require drivers that are not present on this system."
Any ideas.

New x64 drivers for Epson Perfection 4990
Not the newest news, but I only just discovered there are new x64 drivers
for this scanner, version 3.03, dated 1/Nov/2006.
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=50666&prodoid=49164280&infoType=Downloads&platform=Windows
They are buggy in doing a scan of a selected area (memory outage). When I
scan with Silverfast light, I can do a selection of an area.
Might be the drivers for other scanners are updated too.

WMP and black screen
Still getting a black screen while attempting to play DVD's when aweek

Going back to WMP10 doesn't help. Reloading video controller drivers
dont help. Why can't Windows configurations stay the same?

format and that format every week. This is getting rediculous and has to

CSRSS.EXE consuming CPU on startup of XP Pro
Does anyone know a way to stop this Windows system 32 program from running on
startup and consuming essentially all the CPU memory. It will not allow
completion of the startup process or connection to any networks, wired or

Odysses Client. I uninstalled the same and then could not access any
networks due to this issue with CSRSS.Exe. The task manager will not allow
you to shutdown this process once in starts.

strange problem in running c++ program...
I am facing a strange problem which i would like to share with you
people and get ur ideas and knowledge about it. Whenever i try to run a
C++ program after successfully compiling i get the following error.
The title of the window is: 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
c:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe -tc
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
CS: c000 IP:359e OP: 0f 03 20 12 03 Chose 'Close' to terminate the
application.
I only get two options one is close on clicking close the tc program
ends and if click the ignore button then the screen goes blank. now i
have an AMD Turion 64 bit dual core processor. Intially when i used to
run the c++ programs on intel processors it never gave me any issues.
so is the problem due to the processor. if it is then can you tell me
the solution and if it is not due to the processor what problem would
it be and what could be the solution. . Do I need to install a 64 bit C
compiler, linker, loader if it is then where can i find it out for
download.

I've just got my new Dell precison 690 with two dual core Xenon Intel

By default the bios had enabled Hyper threading and I could only use a

25%, but I can't find a way to use the whole power available.
I checked affinity and my main application is allowed to uses all the

Printing to Xerox 5500
There is a known issue with the Xerox Phaser 5500 printer installation
as this runs a program called PSCOUTEXE.
Everytime I print to the 5500 printer it threw up a program error
"PScoutExe has stopped working". This is a print monitoring program
but does not prevent stuff being printed. As this was annoying we did
the following.....
The program runs as a process so you cannot see it in the TASK Manager
window unless you have the error message displayed. Once you have it
all you need to do is to remove the run privelages from EVERYONE (first
remove inherited properties) and the program does not run when you
print, enabling you to print and not getting the error message.
Just in case we also downloaded the VISTA driver from XEROX but that
did not fix the problem!
The issue exisits for both 64 and 32 bit versions of RTM Vista Tag: [O.T.] - Merry X-mas Tag: 41995

5.1, MMDriver.inf and Machine check error
I have been having a load of (non) fun over the last couple of days,
just when I thought I had this second re-build working it turns out
it's not.
I've just bought the Emu 1820m Sound-Card and wanted to test getting
a 5.1 output from Windows Media Player (WMP). While following the
instructions found in the http://www.productionforums.com forums =
Tools/Options/Devices/Speakers/Properties and make sure that
DirectSound is selected (though I'm not sure at this point as that I
have two DirectSound choices - as well as the default there is an
E-DSP Wave [BCE0] version. (I've tried both) , anyways, when I
clicked on advanced it came up that the MMDriver.inf file was missing,
yet I could see it clear as day sitting in my system32 directory -
where it was supposed to be. So I searched this fault and found many
people had posted copies in the groups, which I copied into my system32
folder after changing the name of the original .inf to .old.
I even put a copy into my WOW64 directory.
Nothing seemed to be working, so I went into Programs (rightclick) My
Computer/manage/eventviewer/system and found a WMIxWDM Errors 120, 122,
123, Machine Check Event reported is a fatal bus or interconnect error.
So off I went down this road and read how many people said memory is
bad or CPU is bad. My ram is brand new Corsair - the stuff that they
recommend.
So I started poking around in my bios, tried turning ECC on again,
turned chipkill off and searched to find out what the 4 or 8 beat burst
was all about. The side panel in my bios said that 64 bit Dq must use 4
beats - and I had it on the 4 because (in my mind) I was running 64
bit. It turns out that 64 bit Dq is single channel memory, so I changed
my bios to 8 beats and rebooted and no more WMIxWDM errors.
It also turns out that this error is the machine saying it found a
problem, but it has fixed it.
I notice today that it is still happening at boot, but not on warm
boots
Back to the MMDriver issue, at Free Codecs.com I found a tute telling
how to load the MMDriver.inf, titled "How to (re)install Default Codecs
in Windows XP/2000. "
1. Choose Start > Control Panel and click Add hardware, then click Next
from Add Hardware Wizard.
Click "Yes, I have already connected the hardware" then click Next
button, again.
2. Choose Add a new hardware device at the bottom of the list and click
Next.
Select "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list
(Advanced)", and click Next.
3. Select "Sound, video and game controllers" from "Common hardware
types" list and click Next.
Select "(Standard system devices)" from "Manufacturer" and click Have
Disk... button.
4. Click Browse in the Install From Disk dialog box and open the folder
C:\Windows\System32
Find mmdriver.inf file, select it and click Open then click OK in the
Install From Disk dialog box. If you see a warning about logo
compatibility, just click "Continue Anyway".
5. Now you should finally see a list of audio codecs.
But I didn't, I got a new error message, "The specified location does
not contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the
location contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with
windows for x64based systems."
I got to thinking that maybe this copy of XP 64bit that I bought from
an online retailer who I had dealt with many times had sold me a
pirated copy.
So I dug deeper on this MMDriver thing, turning up at Microsoft to read
this
"Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 editions and Microsoft Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition require that OEM device driver .inf files
specify a TargetOsVersion entry in the [Manufacturer] section and in
the [Models] section for the following 64-bit computer platforms "
"Note The .NTamd64 decoration in the following .inf file excerpt is
used for all AMD64 or EM64T platforms. Conversely, the .NTia64
decoration is used for Intel Itanium platforms.
[Manufacturer]
%mycompany% = MyCompanyModels, NTamd64
[MyCompanyModels.NTamd64]
%MyDev% = mydevInstall, mydevHwid "
Now if you look at the MMDriver.inf you will see no decorations like
above, which makes me suspicious about my copy of x64, or that
Microsoft don't do what they say needs to be done.
Further down the page I found
"Installing Undecorated INFs on X64-based Systems
The following workarounds can be used to install undecorated INFs on
x64-based systems. These workarounds are intended only for use on test
systems and are not recommended for production drivers.
Method 1. Turn off the undecorated models check for AMD64. To turn off
the undecorated models check for AMD64-based systems only, create the
following non-zero numeric registry value:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup:
REG_DWORD: DisableDecoratedModelsRequirement
Set the key to a non-zero value (such as 1) and restart the system,
then install the driver. "
Now running the free-codecs install worked, but what do I need to load?
[note: I just installed Microsoft ADPCM CODEC, but SiSandra still only
shows 1 channel]
choices are
[MCI] CD Audio
[MCI] Microsoft Video for Windows
[MCI] Midi Sequencer
[MCI] Sound
Cinepak Codec by Radius Inc
DSP Group TrueSpeech Audio Codec
IMA ADPCM Audio codec
Microsoft ADPCM Audio Codec
Microsoft Audio Compression Manager
Microsoft CCIT G.711 Audio Codec
Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio Codec
Microsoft RLE Codec
Microsoft Video 1
Midi Mapper
On this OS install I did not load the AMD Driver Pack, it seems that I
have to load the setup_8131.exe first to get the amdpci64 filter
loaded, because the driver pack asks for this sys file which is not
anywhere else in the machine.
I've tried loading the amdapic64 but I get an error that I have no
supported hardware.
I'd want to think that the OS has the chipset drivers etc

Questions about Windows 2003 64
Hello,
These questions may seem silly but I'll ask to play it safe - thanks for
your feedback.
ANyone have any issues with adding a 64 bit 2003 server to an existing
Windows 2003 domain if the existing servers are 64 bit?
Anyone have any issues with running Symantec AV enterprise on Windows 2003
64 server? I've worked with McAffee, Sophos and others - I prefer
Symantec - so my question is about Symantec, not alternatives.
Anyone see an advantage to running Windows 2003 64 for a DC, if they only
plan on using 4GB on that server and a dual core processor?
Thanks again! Tag: [O.T.] - Merry X-mas Tag: 41930
Can't get XP x64 installed correctly
I'm installing Windows XP x64 on a RAID0 array. I used the current nVidia

smoothly. However, I can't get past the splash screen. Windows just reboots
every single time and it goes into a loop with no BSOD or error message. I
have reinstalled once only to get the same result. My configuration is:

Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLI (using the nForce 4 RAID controller)
2gb Kingston PC3200 DDR
2 Western Digital WD2500KS 250gb hard drives

Windows Vista Unsigned Drivers
Hello!
So I've got this Gameboy Advance Homebrew running device, like a little
docking station for a custom GBA cartrdige. Heres the thing, on Windows
XP the thing works fine, driver is found stright away and then bam,
chucking stuff on it.
On Vista (RC1 5600 64bit Beta), the driver can not be found, not on my
CD or when I download like a hundred different versions of the driver.
Theres a good chance the thing just needs new drivers, but on XP you
get the whole "Driver is unsigned or untested, continue anyway?" Which
might be the problem.
So, basically, asking if anyone has had problems with drivers on Vista
and any possible ways to fix it, I'll take anything you got!

BSOD Vista 64
I am experiencing what seem to be random Blue-Screen-of-Death errors on my
experimental Vista 64 machine. They don't correlate directly to any user
actions of mine. It does not happen in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with
Networking. I've done what I can by unloading software and driver, but this
is becoming over my head. I'm trying to avoid a complete re-install of Vista
64, if possible.
In antcipation of requests, the information below is the BSOD text and the
few reports I could find.
I would appreciate suggestions.
Thanks,
Dave

64-bit and 32-bit handles
Hi,
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa384203.aspx
"Handles to named objects such as mutexes, semaphores, and file handles can
all be shared."
Does this mean that I can use DuplicateHandle in a 64-bit process and pass
the duplicated handle truncated to 32-bits to the appropriate 32-bit process
and call DuplicateHandle in a 32-bit process and pass the duplicated handle
zero-extended to 64-bits to the appropriate 64-bit process?
Thanks for your help.

How to restore dual boot of xp 32 & win 64
I got this from the planet 64 amd newsgroup.
I had winxp 64 installed.I then installed Vista RC2 build 5744. I had a copy
of Xp home kicking around and thought I would load it ,so when vista comes
out I will use it to upgrade to vista. This way I can keep my win xp 64 &
dual boot. After installing XPhome I could not dual boot error message was
(ntoskrnl.exe is corrupted or missing) I tried everything I could think of
to fix the dual boot. I fail miserbly. I came accross this msg. in the
newsgroups on Plantnet64 amd. I thought I would give this a try. I followed
the instructions carefully. It worked I now can boot vista using (Vista Pro
Boot Manager). I can boot to vista Or Xp64 Or xp home 32. If u have had a
hard time setting up dual boot after installing xp home try this it worked
for me.
To restore your dual boot of XP64 and XP32 you will need to run the recovery
console from the XP32 install CD.
When it asks you which installation you want to log on to make sure you log
onto
the XP64 installation.
From there you should run the command "bootcfg /list"
This will find and list all currently installed versions of windows on your
system. After you run that you will need to run "bootcfg /rebuild"
It will then search for the needed boot information you will get a prompt
such as
this:
Total identified Windows Installs: 2
[1] C:Windows
[2] D:Windows
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
You should type "all" and hit enter
From there you will be asked to Enter the Load Identifier.
This is the name of the operating system. When you receive this message,
type the
name of your operating system, and then press enter.
This is either Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Microsoft Windows XP
Home
Edition.
Then you will be asked to enter OS load options:
When you receive this message, type "/fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn" (for
XP32)or
"/fastdetect /NoExecute" (for XP64) then press enter.
You will be asked the same questions for each OS you have installed.
after you have done this you will type "exit". the system will reboot.
You may notice that there are 3 choices after using this to repair the dual
boot.
if this happens goto the boot.ini file in the root of C: and open it with
wordpad
or notepad. remove the extra line and save the file.
Make sure that when you do this that the box for "always use this program to
open
this kind of file" is unchecked.
You should be able to boot into both OSs properly now.

uninstalling xp pro 64 bit
Accidently installed XP Pro 64 to a clean sata disk. I do not want it --
grabbed the wrong disk. Silly question (not a pro but eager to learn) how
do I uninstalll it? I want my 32 bit installed. Do I repartition it or use
an emergency disk? How do I do this before booting XP? Any advice with
instructions would be greatly appreciated. :-) Tag: [O.T.] - Merry X-mas Tag: 41859
2k3r2 64bit - cannot run networked applications
All:
(details)
Probably a silly question but I just added an x64 r2 server to our
domain. it is not a DC or a GC. I have successfully added the server
to the domain. I am logged on a Domain Administrator.
(issues)
I cannot run any application on a network share. I have 1 TB in a raid
array as D:. I've created a network share for D: in A/D as W:\. I
cannot run any applications from W:, even though this is locally D:\.
Running the same apps from D:\ works perfectly fine with no alteration.
None of the A/D users or permissions or shares are 'new', meaning that
the same setup has been working for the last 9 months since I built the
domain, and still works fine on all the other shares/servers/pc's.
I can browse everything. I can take ownership. The Compatibilty tab is
greyed out however.
(error syntax)
Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not
have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Tag: [O.T.] - Merry X-mas Tag: 41856

Windows XP 64 bit CD rom driver installation
When I try to install my CD rom drive under Windows XP 64 bit version the
hardware install program keeps telling me there is no driver available.
The drive manufacturer's web site says the drive uses the drivers provided
by Windows XP and provides no drivers or even a reference to the Windows
XP 64 bit version. How do I install my CD rom drives under windows XP 64
bit version? Tag: [O.T.] - Merry X-mas Tag: 41840
x64 install on RAID array
Hey, I'm kinda stumped now. Thanks to those who helped me figure out how to
get my new RAID array to show up in my existing copy of x64. I'm going to get
rid of the old drive, but instead of copy the old machine onto the array, I
want a clean Windows install.
When I installed x64 before, I had to install a SATA driver during
installation. I used a floppy with drivers on it, but have since gotten rid
of the floppy drive. I made a CD with the required nVidia RAID drivers, but
Windows Install only gives me the option of A:\ to search for the drivers.
How can I install Windows on my RAID array by using a second CD with drivers
on it? Tag: [O.T.] - Merry X-mas Tag: 41830
