    - pagefile size for 8gb RAM I upgraded my Vista Ultimate X64 to 8gb RAM. Windows suggests my pagefile be set to 12288. I always set min-max to the same size. I'm trying it with no page file at the moment butI'm unsure if that's wise. Any suggestions would be appreciated. It's still accessing my 4gb ReadyBoost.     - error message from Viesta 64 ultimate event viewer I have done a complete reinstall twice on a hp pavilion tx1000, its a tablet pc. On both installs after it is done installing the system comes up to the vista screen but then reboots by its self after a minute or two. I have stopped the auto reboot function through computer properties and system protection ( i think thats right). I can get it to safe mode where it is fine and i am able to read the event viewer which gives me a event code of 7000, which btw happened 45 times in an hr, and a description of "The fbikb_nt service failed to start due to the following error: This driver has been blocked from loading." Now i have been on line with HP's tech support 3 times which was no help.     - an upgrade down graded me I have had my pc for 3months now, its been running on 64bit windows vista home premium,but last night i downloaded an important upgrade for windows vista ( intel corperation - video - intel(r) 82945g express chipset family) When my computer restarted, it down graded my 64bit to 32 bit.     - Future of XP Professional x64 I have noticed a number of software developers offering 64 bit versions of their applications for Vista 64 only.     - Cisco VPN for Vista x64? does it exist? Im thinking it probably doesnt which is really unfortunate... Im running Ultimate x64 with SP1 and Im really impressed! Vista seems so much better since I used it last November, its quick, nothing crashing and nearly all of my critial apps work...except for my Cisco VPN client, I get an error when trying to install it. last year when I tried to use Vista (32 or 64) most of my applications didnt work but now everything works except vpn, which is a show stopper, Im a network admin and without it I cant do my job. Considering that MS and Cisco are so tight you would think that this would be available now. Cisco, a technology giant, a company that is responsible for a large part of the internet back bone cant put out a 64bit version of their software...Im unable to adopt this until they do. anybody have a work around for this? or information on a newer ver of the Cisco client?     - Please help i have no idea as to what i can do. i don't want to I have windows xp x64 works great just fine. I installed registry mechanic and .net framework 3.5 shit went down the whole. what I mean is I no longer have disk defragment also I lost I don't know how but I go to control panel administrative tools and system management is gone I have 4 hdds in my system. 2 of them at 10 gb 1 80 main 1 120 primary slave the 2 10 gb drives are for back up perpuses only. well now I got a 120gb hdd and a 40gb hdd to replace the 2 10 gb hdds so I moved all the files from the to back up drives to my main storage drive and now I need to install the other drives I believe it would be best to defragment after this ordeal but I don't know how to do this. ok here is the question how to I save my pc?     - Vista x64 SP1 I just bought a new HP m9100t with VHPx64. I'm happy with it so far. I have a full retail license for Vista Ultimate and a technet subscription allowed me to download Vista Ultimate SP1 x64. I tried to upgrade the VHPx64 using SP1x64 but it wouldn't let me. It said I could only upgrade SP1 to SP1. I used my retail Ultimate x64 DVD to upgrade the OEM VHP x64. There were no problems.     - Memory management question I have been doing performance load testing of an application running in remote desktop to a Terminal Server running on Windows 2003 Server 64-bit Std Edition run. I load up the server with remote clients running the application until I reach the capacity limits of the server. In my 32-bit server testing the available physical RAM would usually get down below 100MB before the first big working set trim would take place. On my first test using the 64-bit server (with 16GB RAM installed) the first working set trim took place when there was still about 3GB of physical RAM available. It reclaimed over 8GB of RAM from the working set bringing the available RAM number up to 11.5GB. I continued adding users and the next working set trim took place when performance monitor showed I had 8GB of physical RAM available. Does anyone know what's going on here? Why would it be doing a working set trim with so much physical RAM still available? I have my page file size set at 24GB (all allocated up front). Any help is appreciated.     - error installing quicktime I have been trying to install Itunes/Quicktime (latest version) and I keep getting error2738 (vbscript error).     - Canon Lide 50 scanner I built myself a new system and have put Vista 64 Ultimate on it. I have had a few issues with drivers, but one I cannot figure out is a driver that will allow my Canon Lide 50 scanner to work Canon, for some reason, has re-compiled the drivers for 64bit processing for their Lide 60 scanner, but not the Lide 50. I have to have to get a new scanner just because of Canon's decision. what Canon has done was to give me access to their "Customer Royalty Purchase" site. WHAT A JOKE. At most 10% off and I have founf eveything on it for a lower cost than on their special, passwork protected "Customer Loyalty: area. I have had Canon products for years and really like them, but this surprises me. Windows does not have an answer for the driver either.     - Vista Ultimate 32-Bit or 64-Bit ~~ Which is the way to go?? OK, it appears that with a clean install, I can in fact move over to the 64-Bit world! My PC is an HP Pavillion Elite m9150f. The basic spec's are as follows: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 3GB DDR 2 RAM NVIDIA 8500GT with 256MB Dedicated 720GB HD @ 7800RPM (2 320GB HD's in RAID 0 Config) New system, still at factory level. Use it heavy in the Office 2008 arena. Play RPG style games; Oblivion, Neverwinter Nights, Call to Duty 2 & 4. Use Quicken 2008, iTunes (Movies, Music, iPhone) and all of the factory loaded software. My system has a twin on the HP Shopping site, same ID, but ships with Vista 64-Bit. The retail version (mine) shipped with the 32-Bit. My thinking, that most of the general crowd is satisfied with the 32-Bit scheme. However, since I do believe the 64-Bit OS is the future, I am seriously considering the up date now. Reasoning, New system and everything is at the factory level with NO software loaded yet. So, with the above in consideration, what is the Guru Recommendation: Retaine the 32-Bit OS or switch to the 64-Bit OS??? Please explain your reasoning and recommendation...     - Upgrading Home Premium 32-bit to Ultimate 64-bit **QUESTIONS** Hi ALL, I have just purchased the "RETAIL" version of HP Pavillion Elite m9150f PC, which came loaded with Home Premium 32-BIT. I have Ultimate Upgrade Edition, which came in 32-BIT and 64-BIT. After a visit to HP Shopping web site, I found they sell the m9150f in the "PRE-BUILT" format, with the 64-BIT OS. I have compared the 2 side by side, Retail vs. Pre-Built, and it appears the ONLY difference between the two is the OS. Retail=32-BIT, Pre-Built=64-BIT... Since I have purchased the Retail version, I would suspect the upgrade to 64-BIT OS, should be an upgrade option that will work with what I have purchased. Two Questions: Q1: Is the 64-BIT version a better OS for the long haul, meaning now would be the perfect time to make the switch, since I just purchased this system and everything is factory default?     - language packs and SP1 Hello, I recently read an article saying the SP1 will be delayed until fixes can be made to work with the added language packs. http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2008/03/04/vista_ultimate_sp1_language_packs/ I had been adding some languages to my system as a courtesy to friends with diverse backgrounds. All these people are multi-lingual, so it's strictly a courtesy. Is there a consensus on whether I should remove the packs, so that SP1 could install, or should I just wait for the fixes to come out 'later in the year'?     - Trojan damages My computer was recently infected by trojans. It took sometime for me to detect it because I was using avast at first. I switched to Kaspersky and that did the trick. After the cleaning process, I can no longer open my hard drives from My Computer the normal way (i.e. double clicking). When I double click on their icons, an "Open With" dialog box appears. I decided to repair my copy of winXP by reinstalling it (choosing the Upgrade option). Everything went fine, only my IE (previously ver 7) rolled back to ver 6 and WMP (previously version 11) rolled back to ver 9. I re installed IE7 and WMP11. Problems: The IE7 icon does not show up in the start menu (I usually load IE from the start menu). Everything works fine with IE 7 though...or so it seems...what do i do?     - OT - Excellent unofficial drivers for SoundBlaster in Vista x64 Creativelabs has done a lousy job providing good drivers for their soundcards. I have been successfully using modded drivers taken from the Vista forums at Creative for many months. The last one is really something.     - Vista and USB Mass storage device problems... I just can't seem to access my external hard drive... At one point I was able to. it saw it as just another folder in my computer but now I can't get it back for the life of me. I updated my ports, I tried patches but all I ever got was "this update does not apply to your system". It shows up in the device manager and says its working properly and when I unplug it from my computer I hear the little "disconnect sound" same for when I reconnect it except its the "reconnect sound".     - Just a last check on my Shut-Down issue. . . Before I throw myself on the phone - anybody think it possible, even by the slimmest of chances, that the CMOS Battery could cause such a thing? The machine is about 8 months of age, and the battery could in reality be significantly older than that. I have not seen any other indications that would make me suspect the battery, I succesfully flashed the BIOS a month ago, but then BIOS's has been seen to have mysteriously severe impact on a system's apparent sanity.     - Audio Codecs, INF install doesn't work, Virtualdub This is driving me crazy. I have upgraded assembled a new system and I am running Vista 64 Unlimited. I do a lot of multimedia work and need to get the audio and video (mostly audio), decoders and codecs back installed. I use a great product called Virtualdub http://www.virtualdub.org/ , as a front end to manage my encoding. I use Divx a lot, etc. Here is the issue: * When I get the audio decoders and codes that I have used before in XP 32 bit, many of them get installed by downloading a "rar" folder, extracting them, then "right-clicking" on the file.INF file and the decoder or codec gets installed. * When I do that, with my 32 bit codecs it appears to have been installed, but in reality nothing gets installed. * Apparently, the .INF file, "right-click" install doesn't work anymore with those 32 bit codecs in Vista 64. * I have some codecs that I have found that are 64bit and work fine in the 64 bit version of Virtualdub. * My issues that with some of my video codecs, mainly Divx, is 32 bit. * While the latest Divx 32 bit decoder works great in Virtualdub 32 bit, I need my 32 but audio codecs to get installed, so I can have by audio and video working together. * Virtualdub in particular likes to use ACM type of decoders/codecs, and the ones I have are set to install by installing the .INF file. * In particular, I am in great need of a AC3 ACM 32 bit codec that I can install. I finally found, in a Chinese web site, where someone packaged up a LAME ACM codec in the form of a .exe file. That installed great !! * I have read some things that I really don't understand about Vista 64 "blocking" the INF installation ?? * What can I do and hopefully, that will be changed in the future. Lastly. My favorite source for audio codecs is Rarewares. http://www.rarewares.org/ . Tjhey have the newest and the best selection of the superior open source codecs, some especially compiled for to work with the CPU that one is using. Great side. PLEASE HELP. Thanks in advance !!     - Bugcheck analysis - can anyone tell me what this means? To cut a long story as short as possible, our Dell PE SC1420 running Server x64 standard SP2 keeps intermittently restarting from a stop 0x00000050 error and logs only a "the previous system shutdown at x on x was unexpected" event in the log. The WinDbg dump analysis (included below) always shows the error to be a nonpaged pool expansion caused by our DAT tape driver (pvdatw2k), which is current and supplied by Dell (there is no native x64 driver). Dell have replaced the drive and cable and most of the major components in the system, but the error keeps occuring. I sent them the crash dump analysis and I have run my own diagnostics and swapped the RAM module positions and a litany of other things (which the system passed) to try and get to the bottom of this issue, but to no avail, and Dell have now closed this case. Whilst I am able to run the dump analysis, I am not really able to make much useful sense of it. I have been keeping records of the memory locations that show up in the crash dump and have noticed that both memory referenced and the instruction address referencing are very similar each time (see below also for previous memory references). The shutdowns always occur when the server is not doing anything e.g. at 3.00am on a weekend. We use ntbackup (and therefore Volume Shadow Copy) to back the server up and I was thinking that may be at fault, but the backup is usually finished before any crash occurs. Has anyone else had VSC cause a nonpaged pool expansion? Is that what the crash dump analysis is showing, or is it the driver? It's clear what memory is at fault, but where is that freed memory exactly? PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50) Invalid system memory was referenced. This cannot be protected by try-except, it must be protected by a Probe. Typically the address is just plain bad or it is pointing at freed memory.     - XP x64 Secondary HD and Drivers Hello All, Been searching the archives for a while and I still can't find the answer i'm looking for; when I installed my second 500 GB hard disk, I went to Disk Management and everything went smoothly except for the fact that I am only left with 465GB of space. I understand that I won't be able to use the full 500 gigs but losing 36gb seems a bit excessive to me. Are there any workarounds or did I do something wrong? Also , when installing certain devices such as a smart card reader or usb data link, they don't support the x64 version of Xp I'm running, and I can't get them to work, even if I try and install the vista drivers or install them to my x86 program file folders. Is there any way to force them to recognize the drivers or an alternative besides using a virtual machine to run these programs when I need them?     - Stopping Programs From Rotating Cores on Multi-Core System I have XP Pro x64 on an Intel quad core processor. When I am playing multiple simultaneous instances of Everquest, I notice on the Task Manager that the different Everquest sessions are being rotated (seemingly randomly) between different cores, and occasionally, they ALL end up on the SAME core, resulting in everything freezing. My computer can easily handle 3-4 Everquest sessions on a single core, just not 6-7. Ive tried to manually set each instance's affinity via the task manager but its not allowed - and I dont know why. Im using Wineq2 and have the innate Everquest affinity setting to off. No combination of Affinity Settings within both Everquest and WinEQ2 solve this problem. Im told by tech support its an XP issue not Everquest or WinEQ2. So my question is, how do I STOP the OS from rotating my multiple instances of the same game around and force them onto discrete non-changing cores? Also, is there a way to bypass the NOT ALLOWED problem in the task manager and Force then Everquest instances to evenly distribute amongst the 4 cores?     - XP x64 - starved for RAM when handling large files? Hi all, For the past couple of months, my XP x64 system (Athlon X2 4800 w/2GB RAM) has been getting awfully slow when processing large files. For example, burning multi-GB files (I alternate between Nero and ImgBurn), copying large files across my LAN, extracting files with WinRAR or running a repair job with QuickPar. The 'Available Physical Memory' figure under the Performance tab in Task Manager can drop to 20MB or so (20,000--the value is expressed in KB), and as soon as these operations stop, it'll jump right back up to maybe 1.2GB, where it more typically hovers in day-to-day operations. The pagefile usage graph typically stays at around maybe 1.2-1.6GB (even when it gets bogged down like I've described), depending on what I'm doing. It's only when I do these operations with large files that the available physical memory figure drops down to nothing and then the hard drive starts going nuts. I've seen it take upwards of 12-15 minutes (hard drive light stays on solid) to extracting a 4GB RAR file--something that used to barely take 2-3 minutes on that same machine, if that much. The hardware configuration hasn't changed in a *very* long time. It's difficult for me to blame the hardware, as this system used to fly and I used to be able to multitask (doing these same tasks in the background while I'm doing something else) without any problem. Nowadays when I burn a DVD or extract a large RAR file, my system's completely unusable--a problem I haven't seen on a system since the early Pentium days... The pagefile and OS are on separate physical SATA drives, and even though there's plenty of well known techniques to help alleviate bottlenecks, this is the same configuration I've been using since long before this particular problem has started appearing, so again, it's not like all of a sudden my system is poorly configured.     - What an awfull couple of days! It's not that I'm really whining, but I certainly had my share of misfortunes just now! (I probably deserve it) My 64bit system commited suicide and the good old retired Athlon XP 2400+ machine, that I enlisted as an immidiate reservist, refused to acknowledge that it had a perfectly good HD a short while ago! A new flat-cable sorted that one after quite a bit of rummaging. So, folks: "Here I am - back at the old Win2K, for now". What a wonderful machine this is - it never ceases to amaze me! I'll be reading over your shoulders for a while now! I can't really figure out what happened with the FX-62 system, though, since I wasn't in the room when it shut down. When I restart, it may run for a couple of minutes, or 20 perhaps, and one time it shut down shortly after I entered the BIOS Setup. It's not hot at all, this is the 'Coolest' system I've ever had (in every respect). It inhabits a Antec box with a Seasonic PSU and a handfull of fans. I did manage to see the readout a few times - CPU 29*, MB 33*, and GPU 43* (threshold at 126*!) I spent a whole day in there and the only suspect I can come up with is the Seasonic - I hope it is, because I think I can remember it came with a five year warranty. Avast has not made a sound or anything. The last thing I did was on the twin XP Home system where I had mistakenly installed the Asus Tool 'AI-Nap' when I rebuild that system a short while ago, I had removed that two or three days earlier because it slowed down that system quite severely. Removing it was a bit of an ordeal since parts of it kept popping up, but a few days before that had stopped completely. But this has taken me so long that I'm effectively stuck with the carcas over the week-end. If anybody have any idea what else I can put under the looking glass until then - let's hear it, please! I have 2x2 GB chips in memory bank one, and 2x1 GB chips in memory bank 2 for a total of 6 GB. However when I start the machine, in the BIOS the memory shows up as 5056 MB, and in Vista I show 4991.     - Importing a .reg file in 32-bit and 64-bit I need to import a .reg file on 32-bit and 64-bit systems. The .reg file contains settings for a 32-bit-only program. In a 32-bit environment the settings are stored at "HKLM/Software/CompanyName/ ProductName", but on a 64-bit system, the settings are stored at "HKLM/ Software/Wow6432Node/CompanyName/ProductName". I understand the idea of the "Wow6432Node" registry key: 32-bit apps in a 64-bit environment that read and write to the "Software" key, are automatically redirected (behind the scenes) to the "Sofware/ Wow6432Node" key. Unfortunately, this seems to only work when the 32- bit app itself accesses the registry. Is there a mechanism in the .reg file syntax or in the "reg add" command line syntax to ALWAYS treat the .reg file as if it were a 32- bit application accessing the registry? Currently I have 2 .reg files (one for each architecture), but that could get messy. I mean, just imagine if I accidentally imported a "Wow6432Node" on a 32-bit system. I have seen several scripts use the existence of this key to determine what the architecture is. Most likely, you need to apply a BIOS setting to re-map the memory - go
through everything and read all the options and you'll find it.

If not, you'll need a BIOS update!!!
