The worst part is the stuff they make you drink the day before that is the foulest tasting garbage known to man.     - Apparently, Samsung think " that most of our machine will work on [xp]64" Asked about their Printers, and availability of drivers for XP64, this is the misleading reply I got... "Thank you for contacting SamsungElectronics. [Solution] With regards to your enquiry about 64 bit printer, Samsung does not currently have any models available for XP64 bit. At present there is no mention of any place to create drivers or machine with 64 bit compatibility. Having said that, we have found thatmost of our machine will work on 64 if you go through the add printer wizard and select the correct .inf file. Whilst I can appreciate, that ethernet connected printers are driver independent, as it uses a printserver, it's very misleading to imply that their other printers will work on XP64 without any modifications, as this is untrue.     - <vrrROOOOOOOommmm> I'll be a bit light on the NG for the next couple of days. Building up my new laptop. All the Acer drivers look good, no problems so far. I started by installing Acronis partition thing in the 32-bit XP and shrinking down the C: partition to 12 Gb. It's only there for the few things that I might have to do that aren't supported in x64 or LH yet. Grabbed an image of it so I can restore if I need to. Then let the install repartition the rest of the drive -- D: is x64 Edition, E: will be LH64, and F: is my data drive. First configuration issue was to copy the Ferrari.wav over to the D: so my startup sound is there.     - Drive Imaging Software? I know we've visited this somewhat recently in a thread about Norton Ghost but I wondered if anyone has stumbled on software to image my hard drive that works with XP-64? I guess I could boot from a Knoppix disk and image that way but my target disk is formatted in NTFS so unless I want to reformat it in FAT 32 that option won't work. Any ideas?     - win 64 bit install i am trying to install 64 bit with no luck at all. gigabyte k8nxp-9 with 3200+ amd tried all kids of things still no go . what happens is that it loads up to the part when it says starting windows "blue screen part of install at beginning" then it reboots instead of continuing to the f8 screen etc. one thing i have noticed is that if i install longhorn 32 bit i can then install up to the part where u get a chance to format and chose hard drive after that it re boots again. am pullin m hair out here help me please Tag: Mail Icon Missing in control panel Tag: 13128

    - Faxing with NT server We have a SBS 4.5 server and we recently installed two PC with XP x64. When we attempt to install a printer, we browse to the server and double click on the shared printer to start the installation. We get the usual message that the server does not have suitable drivers and click yes to continue, but instead of getting the window to select the appropriate driver we get the following error The file "*.inf" on (unknown) is needed I found a KB article that suggested setting it up manually through the add new printer wizard as a local printer, then creating a new local port to the network share. The problem is we would like to use the Fax service on the server, but we can not set faxing through the add printer wizard. Can anyone suggest a way around this problem???     - access 97 adnd VB applications A Client of ours just purchased 2 new machines with Windows xp 64 and are trying to load an Access 97 & VB client/server based application. We managed to get around the several linking and installation issues. but when we run it, we get all sort of erroneous results. such as being able to run programs that display information but not update information.     - 32 Browser not working AGAIN I am now officially banging my head on my screen. Yesterday Windows Update downloaded and updated WinXP 64. Everything seemed fine. Last night I turned off my computer. This morning...yep, it did it again. No Access to the internet using the 32 bit browser, no access to email which is a 32 bit program, etc. I have already done the following: Reset everything re the Lan and Hub. Reinstalled and removed the nVidia Firewall Done an "Upgrade" to WinXp 64 from the desk top. Sacrificed an old netgear nic card to the ethernet gods.     - odd video effects i just built a new computer and instaled xp pro x64. all video, from downloads to DVD's appear, weather on media player or any other player i have tried, play with strange color effects. i have tried updating all drivers and downloading all MS patches, but to no avail. i was told it was my directx that needed to be updated, but i dont see ant directx avaliable for xp pro x64. has anyone had this problem and how to fix it?     - WinXPx64 and Nforce4 onbord LAN conflict (w/ firewall or not) Before i start i would like to say I have tryed with the nvida firewall installed not installed and installed and then unisnalled i have also tryed with NO firewalls with teh windows one and with other software ones looks to be not a firewall problum i was wondering if there is maby an windows update that i could manualy download and flopy (or USB) it over that would help with this? The 2 LAN ports both work when connecting drectly to another computer using a crossover cable. I KNOW that the cable connection and modom work becues i have tested them with many other computers with the same Ethernet cable, Infect im using it now (on other computer). My ISP does not require any MAC adress regertreation or anything any Joe blow could use the connection. I am not using a Beta, i bought my copy of WinXP-pro-x64 last week. My Ports are NOT diabled. ANY help would be grate i bought my copmuter for web use but i cant get it to connect to the ISP.     - Spell check using Windows x64. As posted many times Microsoft Office Outlook and Outlook Express require Office x64 for the spell check to function. This is the same as many corporate programs that are used by many people daily. The solution is to write the document using Word or any other document program, perform spell check then copy and paste the document into the program that doesn't support spell check. I use this function daily at work because I also use the custom dictionary function to hot key redundant text without having to retype it. The time loss using cut and paste is minimal compared to retyping pages of documents. Office 2000, Office XP and Office 2003 fully function as 32-bit programs when used in X64 operating systems. It sounds hard and cumbersome but it's very simple to click of a blank document in the tray or minimize the document screen to the side area of the program being used. If there is a worry about hard drive clutter, it's not a problem because saving the document is optional. Try asking your boss to have your office program rewritten that's being used by hundreds or thousands of other employees because there is no spell check function.     - my photoshop CS2 got bad performance Hi there, Does anyone have the same issue that after grabbing 3-5 jpg photos from directory to photoshop CS 2 as usual, hard drive may keep running, running till system hang there for a while and popping up with virtual memory shortage.     - AMD Cool n Quiet and XP64 Just thought I would share my recent experience with you all. I installed XP64 and all drivers OK and all was sweet until I ran the Half Life 2 Stress Test. It ran sort of strange as if in slow motion but yet perfectly smooth. The end result gave me 153fps which was a massive jump as 32 bit XP gave me around 95fps. I tested some other games and they also seemed to run in a slow motion. I played around with variour drivers and hardware setups until finally I checked what speed my CPU was running in XP64. It showed as 1GHz, when it should be 2GHz. I booted into the BIOS and took a chance to disable "Cool n Quiet" as I noticed the CPU fan was at times not even spinning which was kind of worrying even when playing games which put a lot of stress on the system. Anyway, disabled cool n quiet and booted back into Windows and the CPU was showing as 2HGz, and all my games now run fast and smooth.     - x64 with Optusnet Broadband and Dlink Modem I have just built a new pc with the windows xp x64 installed on it. I am not trying to connect it to the internet using my broadband account. The modem I am using is a Dlink supplied by Optus. I have talked to optus who said that they do not support the new operating system. I have talked to Dlink and they have not released the drivers for the USB yet. So I am currently trying to connect using Ethernet. I have a Gigabit connection in the new pc. The modem and cable work fine on my old pc. According to Dlink I need to access the website for the modem which is 10.1.1.1 in Internet Explorer. However, when I type this in, the bottom of the page has www.10.1.1.1 and it alternates between .org, .edu, .com etc, trying to find the page that I'm looking for. It then tells me that Internet Explorer tells me that it can not bring up the search engine. Now that I have restarted, when I do this, it changes the address to "http://10.1.1.1/ and says that the page cannot be displayed. Without accessing this page, I can not configure the computer for internet access. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do next? I have pinged the address and it works fine. Four packets sent and received. Obviously the cable and modem work fine as I am now currently connected to the net on the old computer using ethernet. HELP! The test always report that " there is no enough debug information in the image" no matter how I set the -profile and Zi options in source file.     - New Dells with XP Pro x64 for CAD I'm looking for a new CAD workstation, which will do a lot of math intensive engineering simulations as well as AutoCAD drafting. It will be in a Windows domain. I don't know at this time exactly what apps will be used, but they will be specialized for things like concrete stress analysis. I'm trepidacious about compatibility with XP Pro x64, and not sure how great the advantage is going to be. Most of what I've read is about driver issues, but this will be bundled with a Dell, so application compatibility is probably the only issue.     - Legacy driver issues - can I move off XP64? I'm expriencing problems installing old drivers for XP64. The manufacturers of the peripherals have ceased to support the devices involved. In one case, the manufacturer has left that market altogether (despite their product still being, IMO, the best there is). At this stage, I think my simplest solution is to move to XP.     - Impressions of the install: x64 XP Pro I couldn't find the recent post about how "hard" it was installing this puppy, so here is my unbiased opinion. Possibly the most automated install of ANY OS I have ever done since maybe "Dr" DOS 5. I literally booted to the CD and hit the "Any" key to boot from CD, it ran its course detecting stuff and copying files (this was my only gripe; went VERY slow -- well over a half hour, although my swapping out a DVD burner for the stock 48x CD ROM drive may have caused the problem) until I finally needed to click two buttons for location etc. before the final boot to my Windows desktop. Simply amazing. Even detected my gigabit ethernet onboard and had me online stat! From there, I updated the monitor driver (pivot) and tried updating the video card unsuccessfully from Windows' own stock. USB Audio and all other external peripherals waited until the next night, but I did download and successfully install 22M worth of updates from MS right away. One gripe is that it did not recognize my WiFi USB dongle, which I use to print and share files. Its manufacturer (SMC) says they don't have a date for when they will have drivers. Not a big deal. Server wasn't much more work, and it recognized my video card from the start. Not thrilled I had to grab the same 22M of updates when finished, but what's new... My only question, seeing how many of the "problems encountered" posts appear to involve AMD systems, is: was the final version biased toward an Intel system (despite being built off of the original AMD-based Beta), or is that simply a numbers game; that there are so many more AMD64 systems out there than the much more recently-released Intel systems? I still plan on building/buying an AMD64 system, prolly a dual-core... but I don't want *that* install to be an uphill battle. Is there a feeling the problems are more a chipset thing (hopefully) than an AMD thing per se? That would still suck. It also appears to me SATA II is not yet ready for x64, which bugs me, since that would likely be what I'd look for in a new AMD-based mobo. For now, SATA seems plenty fast... just like 640k once seemed plentifull to run all my progies. ;~) And I'll assume some of you are successfully using wireless ethernet NICs? Any USB modems?     - nVidia Firewall issues Hi guys, hope you might be able to shed some light on this issue. I installed XP64 lasy night and all is good apart from the nVidia firewall being what I can only descirbe as overzealous. It is blocking just about everything from working properly. Even when I turn the settings down to low or anti hacking only things like Windows update will not work. If I turn the firewall off completely then windows update works fine. This is all running over the nVidia ethernet. The Marvell port works without any problems at all.     - Windows installer erro I have Win XP Pro x64 build 3790 v1433 on my computer (SuperMicro dual Xeons, 2 GB mem, SATA and SCSI hard drives). The x64 OS has been working flawlessly until a few days ago. Now I cannot install any new software. I tried Adobe Acrobat 6.0, FrontPage 2002, and ArcGIS 9.1 and I get the following errror message after completing the intitial install step...... Windows installer Error signature AppName: msiexec.exe AppVer: 3.1.4000.1433 ModName: Unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 02a65cb6 The software installation stops and provide me the option to send an error report to Microsoft and then closes the install process. I have installed Office XP, and non-MS software with no problems, so I don't know what happened that this error is occurring now. Any help is greatly appreciated.     - cd errors Is there any way possible to get past the cd cannot copy file errors?     - Please confirm this possible Marvell Lan x64 bug I've been having a little problem with my Internet/Lan connection and I read in the link at the bottom of this page that it may be due to a possible bug between Windows x64 and Marvell Lan x64 drivers due to loss of "samba shares." I'm not sure what this means, but when using the Marvell Lan port with my Win x64 system (specifics are in my signature in the link below), my network would work very slowly when opening multiple pages at once... sometimes even coming to a complete halt with occasional spikes of activity on Windows Task Manager. I have two Lan ports on my board and I unplugged my ethernet cable from the Marvell Lan port to the nForce4 Lan port, installed the latest nForce4 Lan drivers, and everything works normally. Anyone know of a way to confirm if this is a bug? I want to make sure my Marvell Lan port isn't broken.     - SATA install - floppy needed - why? Here's what I don't understand... With XP Professional x64, we are stepping into the 64-bit era, yet if you want to install the OS on a SATA harddisk, one needs... a floppy. For those of you who haven't been around all that long, floppies used to be the most popular removable media before the age of the CD-RW. ;-) I can understand that not all hardware vendors have provided Microsoft with SATA drivers to be included on the installation CD, and that one needs to load the missing drivers manually during the installation process, but I can't understand why one has to provide a floppy with the drivers.     - Windows boot Windows loads normally, with no issues. Aftter windows is done installing and during the load screeen there is a fast BSOD followed by a reboot. Before it reboots i remove the CD and driver disk. During POST an error comes up saying that there is a boot failure insert system disk. When I insert the driver disk nothing happens but when i reinsert the windpws cd i get the boot selection screen. I have tried last known good config of which there is none, boot normally and boot in safe mode. When i select boot normally nothing happens ,just a black screenwhile it reboots, when i selct safe mode the line of DOS directories show up like normal but then it reboots. Did you go to Tools > E-mail Accounts (Add a new e-mail account). Or Repair
Outlook to see if it will reapair.
