Shortcuts on the desktop and in the start menu are missing,
Hey
Everytime i install a program, game or just someting, it doesn't put a
shortvut on the desktop or in the start menu, even if it normally does. The
software can still be found in "Program Files", and in the controlpanel (hope
that's what's called in english)
I'm using Vista 64-bit, which i just installed yesterday. In the first few
hours, software got installed and placed their shortcuts as thye should, but
then the problem came.
If i remember right the problem came after i've solved the problem with
"BOOTMGR" because i have SATA2 and an IDE harddisk.

Programming on Vista Ultimate...
Hello,
I was wondering whether anyone has had any problems with using .NET or
Eclipse on Vista Ultimate or any 64bit operating systems. I am
thinking of getting a new laptop but it is preloaded with Vista

Any info would be appreciated.

BSOD, mismanaging system PTEs, x64/WinServer2003?
My power unit & graphics card went down. PCWorld(UK) fitted new graphics
[GeForce 8400GS]
and power unit. WEB access runs for ~5minutes & then BSOD, saying :
"The driver is mismanaging system PTEs.
disable BIOS memory options eg caching, shadowing
STOP: 0x000000DA, etc"
Google search yielded a MS Hotfix KB831899 but this failed :
"different hardware platform"
Other Googles suggest the NVIDIA driver is incorrect, hence the Hotfix.
Yet another implies WindowsServer2003 is problem (this came with the
ASUS board but is not used(?) since I use Win XP x64 SP2.
System: ASUS A8N5X m/bd; Athlon x64 2.4GHz, twin 300GB h/ds, 2Gb RAM
WEB acces via ethernet cable to router[Belkin Wireless G]
cable modem[VirginMedia] @ 4Gb/s
What next? Anyone got better ideas, please?

Why does my computer not close down completely?
I bought a new computer with Vista home premium installed. I have not
installed much yet because I have been having problems 'restarting'
and'shutting down'. In essence when i shut down or restart the computer it
closes down to a certain point where the computer is still on but with no
functionality i.e. no image being sent and no computer noise from the
hardware working. At this point I have left it for over 30 minutes and in
the end had to shut it down by pressing and holding the power button on the
fron tof the computer. To restart I have to turn the power off at the back
of the computer as if i don't all I get is the whirling sound of the fan at
initial start-up continuously.
Any idea???

Windows Media Player 10
Hi,
I have Windows X64 Pro. I recently installed Windows Media Player 10 and
it's not working right. It stops playing at any random time. I want to
uninstall it and reinstall it but it's not in Add/Remove Programs and the
folder doesn't have an Uninstaller. How can I uninstall Media Player 10 so
that I can reinstall it?

Dual Boot Vista & Server ??
Can anyone tell me if its possible to install Vista 64 and then install
Server 2008 and switch between them using Vista boot manager or
something like it ?
I'd like to try out the test version of server but also use the PC for
normal usage in Vista. The PC is not a business PC, just for home use
and trying out different OS's. I realise I could do it with VMWare or
maybe Virtual PC but thats another learning curve I;d rather not go to.
Thanks for any constructive comments

New install XP Pro 64: video glitch on first boot
Hello!
I decided to create a dual boot 32/64 installation on a secondary computer
in my home.
Everything for the installation went as intended. However, upon initial boot
from the hard drive into Windows, the welcome screen is chopped and distorted
in horizontal segments of about half an inch apart. I can see the mouse
pointer move around, but the pointer is split into about 15 pieces scattered
across the screen.
My hardware is an Athlon 64 4000+, 7800GTX and a Dell 2405 FPW LCD monitor.
This hardware functions (and has been for over a year) flawlessly, so it is
not a faulty hardware issue. I have trie plugging the DVI cable for the
monitor into both DVI ports on the back of the 7800GTX but the result is
identical.
If this is a driver issue, how do I get the appropriate driver installed on
the computer if I cannot see what is going on on the screen?
Thanks very much in advance for any help anyone can give. Happy Holidays!

Telephony Will Not Start
I am unable to Dial-up the Interent because the Telephony Service will not
start.
I have:
Entered Run services.msc, right-clicked on Telephony, and
left-clicked Properties; with Start-up type set to Manual I clicked the Start
button. Instead of starting error message 1053 appeared. The message said,
the service did not respond to the service request in timely fashion.
I checked to see if the services Telephony depends were running and both
Plug-N-Play and RPC had started.
I entered the path to the executable program and found svchost.exe in
C:\WINDOWS\System32, but the path also had a suffix -k tapisrv, so I
performed a search for tapisrv and found tapisrv.dll in C:WINDOWS/System32.
I searched the Registry for svchost, tapisrv and found it in HKEY_USERS,
under AppEvents, Software, Microsoft, Search Assistant, ACMru, 5603, 002.
I ran net stop tas, rebooted and performed the net start tas command.
Telephony did not start; local was checked and PnP and RPC both started.
I ran sfc/scannow, put my system disk in the CD drive and watched it
verified the hidden files. Then I rebooted. Telephony still did not start.
When I clicked on the Telephony Start button, I got error message 1053.
Event Viewer â?? System displays the following error messages:
7000 Telephony service failed to respond to start request
7001 Remote Access Control Mgr failed to start because t depends on Telephony
7009 Timeout waiting for Telephony
7024 Routing and Remote Access terminated

The description for 1060: \SystemRoot\Sys\Wow64\Drivers\mdc8021x.sys has
been blocked from loading due to icompatability with nthis system; and in the
detail it said file name ws03res.dll
Event Viewer - Applications has a Warning Category Ci Service. The IISADMIN
service is not available, so virtual roots cannot be indexed Could this be
the cause of the Telephony Service not starting?
Can someone help me?

No 1152 x 864 resolution option
I'm running Vista Ultimate x64 with an eVGA nVidia 8800 GT 512 MB
(superclocked). My graphics driver is forceware 169.02. I have a 19"
Samsung SyncMaster 997df CRT that I'm currently using. However, I am not
given the option to change my resolution to 1152 x 864. It goes from 1024 x
768 to 1280 x 720 onwards and completely skips the resolution I want. I
prefer the 1152 x 864 as it's sharper than the 1024 x 768 but yet the text
isn't so small I have to strain my eyes to read it (as with 1280 x 1024).
Does anyone know if this is a Vista x64 problem or a problem with the nVidia
drivers?
I've checked eVGA's and nVidia's websites and they both claim that my 8800
GT and 169.02 driver can display many more resolutions than are available to
me. Tag: MERRY CHRISTMAS! Tag: 54238

First: if I use the my key, not the trial one, will it work as a

Second: I want to repair my windows installation, but it does not offer me
such an option. I want to keep my programs and not have to reinstall them
all. Does anybody have any suggestion as to how to proceed?

puzzled in Application manifest
Got from MSDN that there's an element - assemblyIdentity in the application
manifest which describes and uniquely identifies the application owning this
application manifest.
What I'm puzzled is following attributes with this element:
1- processorArchitecture (optional), which specifies the processor, x86 for
32-bit Windows; ia64 for 64-bit Windows. If my application needs to support
both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows how should I specify it?
2- type (required), which specifies the application type and must be Win32
(not sure if it works on 64-bit Windows)
I generated an application using Visual Studio 2005 and extract its manifest
using mt.exe but cannot find this required attribute and the
processorArchitecture is specified as msil
Any advice would be appreciate!

Drivers Search
I have recently obtained a MCE Remote control for Microsoft Windows XP Media
Center 2005.
I chose it because the reviews say that it does work with 64 bit Vista
ultimate, so 64 bit drivers must exist.
Unfortunately it is not being recognised by 64 bit XP Pro. Does anyone know
of anywhere that I can download the 64 bit drivers that were written for
Vista? Or which files I need to extract from a Vista 64 source CD to install
on XP Pro 64?
Thanks for any assistance Tag: MERRY CHRISTMAS! Tag: 54105
Running Vista 64. FAQ?
I've been running Vista Business 64 without many problems for a few days
now. One thing is that I'm no longer able to see previews of Adobe
documents in Windows Explorer.
1) Does anyone have a fix for this?
I use Vista 64 because in addition to using MS Office, I do development.
I'm running SQL Server 2005 64 bit and also Visual Studio 2008. The system
is very fast and very stable with 4 GB RAM, 200 GB 7200 HD on an Thinkpad
X61s laptop.
Here are two things to look out for:
This should help you with ITunes burning DVDs under Vista 64:

Nero OEM Essentials 7 with latest update works for me. So does ImgBurn.
Motorola Phone Tools through bluetooth to my Moto Razr to update contacts
from Outlook works as well. I know that Cisco VPN client does not work, but
the newer version called AnyConnect does work.
2) Could we please put together a FAQ that helps people with various
problems such as those above? Tag: MERRY CHRISTMAS! Tag: 54090
64-bit OS not recognized
I can't download music from Walmart.com because they say my OS is "not
compatible". I think it thinks I'm running NT. Even on the Microsoft web
site, I occasionally see a message saying "you aren't running Windows XP and
cannot upgrade to SP2". I guess there's something in the OS that says it's
Wndows 2003, or Windows NT or something that's non-XP. Any way around this?
These little surprises are fouling me on 64-bit. Tag: MERRY CHRISTMAS! Tag: 54077

Hardware re-detection
Here's my first suggestion for Santa Gates.
Many of us here like to do hardware changes from time to time which require
a re-installation of the whole OS (Vista) or a repair (XP).
Wouldn't it be nice if, after changing the mobo (or even a HD), you would
only have to put the Vista DVD on its drive and choose "Hardware re-detect"
from the boot options?
That would make Vista re-detect all the hardware and boot without the need
of a fresh install.
Same would apply to XP.

WIN2K3 R2 x64 Cluster with NAS & Majority Node Set
Can somebody please shed some light on this? Is there any document/whitepaper
available? I am planning to build a 2 node Cluster (with 2 AMD64 boxes) at a
cheap price for fun & gathering experience. No, VMWare isn't an option.
Thanks a lot for your response. Tag: MERRY CHRISTMAS! Tag: 54046
Upgrading from x32
Ok, I have been given the red flag by many sales people and technical support
reps(of which I am surprised and thankful for). I also see there are many
discussions going on in regards to different issues out there. I think I
have a pretty good understanding of what I am getting into if I decide to try
and move the direction of going from x32 to x64. Honestly, some of it
doesn't sound any different from going to a new OS. Drivers, Drivers,
Drivers!!!!
That being said, I have a Dell Precision 690 with XP pro on it and 4GB RAM.
My software packages are SQL Server, Office 2007 and Acrobat 8 Pro. I am
already planning on upgrading SQL and XP to x64 while the others claim they
are supported with x64.
It "appears" I would be ok. Anyone see anything I'm missing? I know there
are no guarantees with IT, etc...just looking for insight. Tag: MERRY CHRISTMAS! Tag: 54036

What is the purpose for 64bit Windows?
I purchased the 64 bit version of Windows XP and found out that many
hardware and software products are not supported hence, I had to revert back
to 32bit Windows XP. Now I see the exact same problems with Vista 64 bit. My
question is: What is the purpose of 64 bit Windows if support is lacking?
Just like Linux which I consider to be crap, I consider the same for the 64
bit Windows.

Phenom quad core, task manager only shows one processor
I've been running for about a week with XP64 on a phenom quad core cpu. When
I first installed everything, task manager showed 4 processors on the
performance tab. Today I noticed that it only shows one. Any idea why, and
what happened to my other three cores? How can I verify that Windows is
seeing, and using, all 4 cores? At first it showed 4 processors, with
different cpu utilisation for each one. Now there is just one. Tag: MERRY CHRISTMAS! Tag: 53978
