Outlook 2003 and XP x64
Hello all - Thanks to the improving driver support for XP x64, I recently
made the switch from Wintel 32 bit to AMD X2 x64.
My experience generally is great, however I've noticed an odd thing
happening with Outlook 2003 (32 bit) I hoping someone can help me with.
I connect to my Office with Cached Exchange mode, over https via an Exchange
Proxy on the outside of my company's intranet, using Basic Authentication
(not NTLM). When I crank up Outlook, I sign into my Exchange Server and all
is well.
Sometime later however (usually at least an hour), the password dialog pops
up again, and despite entering my password fine, authentication fails.
Closing Outlook and restarting it fixes the problem (until the
authentication box pops up again an hour later) - wash... rinse... repeat...
Has anyone seen anything like this, and better still do you know of a fix?
Thanks in advance,
Simon.

"System" task hogging CPU
I am running XP x64 edition on a quad Opteron machine and have been very
pleased with system stability and performance so far. Today I took a look at
the system utilization in the task manager, and found out that the "System"
task (that's the kernel I suppose) was hogging one of my four CPU's (always
the 4th btw, strong affinity).
I tried rebooting and shut down all system services and processes that let
themselves be shutdown, without any effect. I can not tell what exactly
caused this odd behavior, since I do not check resource utilization on a
regular basis and a CPU hogging process can go undetected for a while on a MP
machine.
Do you know of any tools I might use to narrow down the problem? Tag: IE 7 Lsass.exe Bug also affects 64-Bit WS 2003 R2 RTM, just FYI Tag: 32380
Remote Desktop Connection problems
I'm having a problem with Remote Desktop Connection in the 64-bit
version of XP.
Every time I try to connect, I get the folowing error:
"The Terminal Services ActiveX Control (mstscax.dll) does not match the
version of the client shell."
I tried downloading RDC from the Microsoft website, but it didn't work.
Is it possible to reinstall RDC from the XP 64 CD? Or do I have to
download it from somewhere?
Thanks.

Jet database engine/ASP error in Windows XP 64-bit edition
Hi there,
I tried to set up IIS on my 64-bit box that I just got. I build sites
using Active Server Pages, so I wanted to test out the pages locally
without having to upload them each time.
Anyway, I've got IIS and ASP installed and working correctly, except
that every time I try to open/access a database, I receive the
following error:
ADODB.Connection error '800a0e7a'
Provider cannot be found. It may not be properly installed.
The last line of code in this section throws the error.
set Connect = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
Connect.Provider = "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;"
Connect.Mode = 3
Connect.Open "Data Source=" & Data_Source
Where Data_Source is a variable containing a DB path that is passed to
a sub to open the database (standard Jet database connection stuff).
>From what I've read on the subject, it appears that Jet database
connections aren't supported within XP 64-bit, but I find that kind of
hard to believe since well...that's all MS-type stuff.
So...I'm assuming I'm doing something wrong, but don't know what.
Any advice? Thanks.

Post Installation Hang
After successfully installing XP Pro-64 on my machine I ran into some
trouble. When the install completes, it deletes the files it used to install
like always, and then reboots. So far so good. Except when the machine
tries to load windows it ... reboots. I don't even get to the Logo screen.
If i let it go it will just loop endlessly rebooting at the exact same place
every time. When I try booting in safe mode I get to acpitabl.dat and it
reboots again. Logic would dictate that this is where the problem occurs. I
hope someone here can give me a fix for this. I'd really hate to go back to
32-bit and toss yet more money in the trash.
System Info:
AMD Athlon64 3200+
Gigabyte GA-K8NS
2x1024 GeiL DDR400
2x WD 40g SATA drives in Raid 0 (stripping)
I'd like to make the point that the installer works fine. It takes my
64-bit raid drivers during the install, and when it boots at the half way
point it boots into the drives without issue. Its only when the install is
complete that it fails to load.

What is a bug???
A bug by definition is something that doesn't work as designed. Windows XP
X64 has been very stable since CPP releases. The bug has been from the third
party, including program developers and driver developers. Most mother
board, sound and video card manufacturers have been developing drivers for
their components since the system was in the beta stages. Other hardware
manufacturers have been lagging way behind and are still lacking required
drivers over a year after the operating system was released. Microsoft doesn't
write the drivers and has also had trouble getting drivers for components
that it sells. The media excuse is that they're waiting for Vista, but if
you read the other news groups, x64 drivers are still lacking with system
being ready for a CPP release soon. I plan on testing Vista x64 when the CPP
is released. If a bug is found in the operating system it should be
reported. If there is a concern about a driver or lack of a driver the
complaint should be lodged with the component manufacturer. If there is a
program compatibility concern contact the program vendor. A good example of
a program issue, I found a bug with Retrospect back-up software after it was
listed as being x64 compatible. I contacted technical support, they verified
the incompatibility concern and within a couple weeks a patch was issued. Tag: IE 7 Lsass.exe Bug also affects 64-Bit WS 2003 R2 RTM, just FYI Tag: 32265

New x64 Whitepaper on Microsoft.com

Title is "Is Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Right for Me?" and the goal
is to provide real, prescriptive, guidance that can help end users
understand who _should_, and who should NOT, adopt x64 Edition. There's a
bit of a look ahead to Vista, but it's mostly focused on what is the reality
right now. And I got a lot of license from the x64 team at MS to be pretty
frank. I'd strongly suggest that if you have questions about installing x64,

Visual Studio .Net and 64 bit Unicode MFC Project
Good afternoon gentlemen, I am trying to build a 64 bit MFC application.
with Visual Studio 2003.
I succesfully did that. I installed the latest the Microsoft Plateform
SDK R2 in order to build my MFC application.
My problem is that the application does not link anymore when I change
the property of my application to use UNICODE character set. (I was also
able to build a Win32 Unicode project)
Is it possible to build an MFC application using Microsoft Visual Studio
2003 that support unicode? Do I have to explicitely link the mfc4.2
librairies?
I also noticed that the libraries are MFC version 42 for 64 bits? and
they look like they should support Unicode (MFC42U.LIB for example) or
am I wrong? What can I do with those mfc unicode librairies then?
Thank you to help me get out of the dark!

32 bit ODBC driver (jet for MS Access) and 64 bit IIS 6.0

"You should check how your DSN was created.
On an Windows 2003 SP1 x64 you can create a odbc connection on 32bit

the system or on the 64bit side of the system.
And a 32 bit application will only see 32bit side ODBC connection and a
64bits application only the 64bit side ODBC connection.
Each kind of application has is own registry.
To setup an ODBC link for 32bit application you must use

</QUOTE>
I have tried using odbcad32.exe but it didn't work. However this is not
surprising for me: IIS 6.0 is running in 64 bit mode, and consequently
the ASP connection string is looking for the DSN in the 64 part of the
registry, and it doesn't make a difference that I have created it with
odbcad32.exe. It simply looks for it in the 64 bit DSNs.

machine via perfmon. I receive a pop-up window stating: Unable to connect to
machine, However, I can read the registry. Here is what I have done so far:
- Added HKLM\SYS\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurePipeServers\winreg to both
Network Access Remote Registry keys in the Local Security Policy.
- Added Local Service to the above registry key with read access.
- Ensured the user account connecting to the machine follows the following
steps from the KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300702/en-us (the

Hibernation fails (out of the blue)
Hi all,
Well, hibernation has always worked fine, but all of the sudden it errors on
me. If I shutdown normally when I finish typing this message, it'll continue
to hibernate properly afterwards, because I've had this happen before. It
happened a few weeks ago, and now again.
When trying to hibernate, I get a yellow popup in the lower right of the
screen that says the system failed to hibernate, with error code 0xc000009a.
Since hibernation works about 98% of the time, systems specs shouldn't be
relevant, but here goes anyway:
- Athlon64 3000+
- Gigabyte K8N Pro-SLI board (nForce4 SLI chipset)
- 2x 1GB memory (dual channel)
- 74GB 10krpm SATA disk
- 250GB 7200rpm SATA disk
- NEC DVD+/-RW burner
- Radeon X800 XT
- All else onboard
- Windows XP x64 SP1 (of course)
- Pagefile is 1024MB (statically allocated on the boot disk)
- WUP says no updates available
- Latest drivers for everything I can think of
I won't be able to verify any of the suggestions you guys come up with,
because this will be the one time in a few weeks this is going to happen.
Unless of course, my luck has run out. Anyway, if you know what this is,
please share it with me. If not, well, let's hope and pray that someone at
Microsoft reads this and files a proper bug report.

Origen: Microsoft VBScript runtime error
Descripción: Object required
I tried everything con the "Componente Services":
- unselect "enforce access checks..."
- activate the component with an administrator user
- make the user as a member of "distributed com users" local group
I don't know if it's a problem related to Win2003 R2 or related to 64-bit.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!!!.

Driver-specialists??XP64 driver not woking on server [DVD-RAM/UDF]
Hi All!
May be, there is somebody out here, who has enough detailed knowledge
about differences of drivers between XP 64bit and Server2003 64bit??
The thing I mostly miss with my 2003 x64 server is to write UDF
formatted DVD-RAM's. The drive is ok and UDF formatted disks can be
read, but - limited by windows - not be written natively. DVD-RAM in
FAT32 format works well.
Until I moved to server2003/x64, I used Pinnacle Studio with windows
2000;This package has a native driver to read/write UDF format on CD/DVD
but they do not support 64bit currently.
The was a workaround in the AMD64 forums to use a driver on XP64. I
patched the setup to run on server also and no errors occur.
Bad:After reboot - no errors and the drive continues to be read from UDF
- if I try to write to the disk I get the message ~"drive read-only" and
if I try to change it's label I get "access denied". I can see, the
driver is loaded, but possibly not at the right place in the
filter-driver-hierarchy.
Does soembody knows if a driver for XP should run on server too??
Does someone possibly knows a driver which is capable of writing UDF?
Thanks a lot,

Win XP 32-bit upgradable to x64?
Hi,
Is it possible to do an in-place upgrade of the subject mentioned?
(I have tried to find such info, but it seems not mentioned anywhere)
Thanks! Tag: IE 7 Lsass.exe Bug also affects 64-Bit WS 2003 R2 RTM, just FYI Tag: 32070
IE7 beta causes Windows 2003 (sp1) x64 to freeze (sort of)
Yes, you read well. Do not install it on X64. I'm not sure for 100% but it
did reboot and work one time, and after that, -all services- except the most
important ones, like lsa and eventlog do -not- start so only 3 services
could start. Viewing the list of active services (services.msc) is not
possible, unless you switch to standard view. It seems that Windows X64
cannot deal with the HTML view and some other things anyway, I even cannot
view the eventlog, eventvwr.exe can open, but does not allow me to double
click and view what went wrong.
An in-place update from CD was the only solution to get IE6 back (MSI
services also were not able to start).
(ps: this is not a support request, I just mention it). Tag: IE 7 Lsass.exe Bug also affects 64-Bit WS 2003 R2 RTM, just FYI Tag: 32068

when starting my computer it stops in the middle and re boots and when I shut
down it will go to the screen that says it is shutting down but it doesn't. I
have to re start it and shut down at least once more to get it to turn off. I
have been using this system for two years and it just started this a couple
months ago. Tag: IE 7 Lsass.exe Bug also affects 64-Bit WS 2003 R2 RTM, just FYI Tag: 32066
Konica Minolta 2400W
During my XP64 days I emailed Konica Minolta asking for a 64 bit driver
and they emailed back that it would be available by a date they were
unable to make, they later emailed my that it was on their "to do" list
and a few days ago I found it on their website.
Unfortunately, it won't install in Vista64 and I no longer have X64
installed on my computer.......
So my question is, does anyone have this printer? If so do you have
either Vista64 or X64 and can you install the driver?
I don't know if I'm doing something wrong trying to install (I'm logged
on as administrator), the message is something to the effect that the
software isn't made for the OS and I'd like to see if it will install
in X64 but I'm WAAAAAAY too lazy to install X64 to see if it works... Tag: IE 7 Lsass.exe Bug also affects 64-Bit WS 2003 R2 RTM, just FYI Tag: 32059

WPA2 in XP64
How does one enable support for WPA2 in XP-64?
I have the options of WPA and WPA-PSK. But I do not have the option of WPA2.
I thought this would be available in XP-64... it is available forXP-32 when
SP2 is applied. but I cannot find any info for XP-64
is there some patch that needs applied to XP-64? Is it truely available for
XP-64?
or am I being misled? Tag: IE 7 Lsass.exe Bug also affects 64-Bit WS 2003 R2 RTM, just FYI Tag: 32037
