    - hal.dll, please help! for some reason this file keep getting deleted or corrupted, and wont boot, I have actually had to install xp 64 on another drive and copy hal.dll to the other windows install (then it works). it is not on the windows xp 64 OEM cd (using the recovery consol...) also, what other files are associated with hal.dll? any information on this one, it is annoying... very annoying also it seems (since I have duel boot x32 and x64, or tri boot with the other x64 XP installed, same license same computer different drive, works fine, I wonder if that is legal...) x32 keeps over writing NTLDR and NTdetect.com (which results in the error message discussed above "ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt please reinstall") and / or killing hal.dll every boot (almost it seems) I spent 7 hours last night in the recovery consol trying to fix this, I gave up and installed x64 on another drive (I have 2 raptors so that worked out well, xp x32 is installed on a 40gb ide drive) and everything works, but I will have to go back into the recovery consol to config the boot.ini since it no longer sees xp x32 anymore. oh god this is getting TEDIOUS! any help on preventing this in the future, I'll buy you a 6 pack! thanks!!! -- Wes Newman Seismic Data Processor / IT Manager Kelman Technologies Denver, CO Tag: Looks like this maybe an MSI problem.     - Microsoft Drivers I am new to this forum so I did the usual search for what I wanted, 64 bit drivers for my MS mouse and my MS fingerprint reader. Zilch, nada, nein, non ! So here's my beef; why the f&^k is MS the last outfit to update their drivers. Wouldn't you THINK they are trying to sell this OS and at least get THEIR OWN friggin drivers updated ??? I can't use the double click on my Intellimouse 'cuz I can't find a 64 bit version of the driver - the installation bails and version 5.2 is the ONLY version I can find on the MS site. The fingerprint reader has version 1.0 and it's been out for a couple of years. Looks like it's an orphan already :-( MS is the fastest outfit I have ever seen to abandon hardware if it doesn't sell fast enough. Anyway, I am four or five days into the 6 month evaluation but I can sure see NOT purchasing this version in Feb when the trial period is up if MS doesn't update their driver data base at LEAST for their own hardware.     - kind of crappy Hi guys, I just came from macromedia website bitching about not having a flash player available in x64 to realize that not even my newly installed win64 has software for it. Is microsoft planning to release windows media player x64, msn desktop search x64 and messenger x64 for instance? I use all these tools (i can't leave without msn desktop search now) and i believe win64 has been out for quiet a while not to have all these recompiled from microsoft itself. btw, win64 crashes like hell all the applications.     - Creating a Boot Disk for the F6 Prompt Dear Sirs, I'm unsure whether I should be posting this to an XP newsgroup or a newsgroup specific to my motherboard, so apologies if I've made the wrong choice by posting here. My problem: I'm looking to install Windows XP 64-bit Professional onto a system with a RAID-1 array, but I have so far been unable to create a working driver disk for the F6 prompt at the start of the install. When I press 's' followed by Enter to tell the installer to read the disk, it accesses the floppy drive but returns me to the screen prompting for the "Manufacturer-supplied hardware support disk" to press Enter again after 15-20 seconds. Here's my set up: AMD 3000+ 64-bit processor Giga-byte K8NS Pro motherboard (not too impressed with at this point) One stick of 512MB, PC3200 DDR memory in slot 0. Two Seagate barracuda 120GB 7200rpm hard disks. Matrox G450 graphics card My XP disk is a brand new and fully legitimate OEM copy. And here's what I tried: First, I tried running the install without pressing F6. If I have one drive connected onto one of the first two IDE channels, I can go ahead and install XP. If, however, I've activated GIGARAID in the BIOS and created a brand new RAID-1 mirror using the two Seagate disks, one each as the master disk on the last two IDE channels, the install will tell me early on that it cannot find any hardware to install to. Second, I pressed F6. When I got to the prompt asking for the "Manufacturer-supplied hardware support disk", I checked everything that arrived with the Gigabyte board. No disk, just CDs. So third, I looked on the CD from another machine and found what I presume to be the directory containing the necessary files to go on the disk. However, do Gigabyte leave even the slightest hint of documentation about what should be on the disk, and in one directories? It seems, after much searching, googling and downloading the latest version from their site for my motherboard, that the answer is a definite No. So, I copied what I believed to be the necessary files onto the floppy disk. These were txtsetup.oem (which went into the root of the disk), ITERAID as mentioned in the txtsetup.oem file, and the WIN64/ subdirectory and its contents, as also specified in the txtsetup.oem file. And this leads to the above results: when you insert the disk and press enter, it simply thinks about it for a moment, visibly accesses the floppy drive and then asks you again to insert the disk. I am somewhat skeptical about the ability of floppy drives to function, so I went through four different floppy drives (a good job, as two didn't work correctly) and two different floppy disks, all of which happily seem to read and write files on the system I've been using to prepare them. So I have then tried altering the content of the disks: I've copied across the other subdirectories for different Windows versions (WinXP, Win2003, etc), which seemed pointless, I've put all the files in the root directory, and so on. But no luck - it still does exactly the same thing, giving no error but just simply prompting for the disk again. What's annoying here is that XP isn't giving me any help. It's not saying: "I can't see the floppy drive", or "The disk is corrupt", or "I read the disk okay but couldn't find something referred to by txtsetup.oem" etc. If someone therefore could give me a clue as to what might be astray here, I'd be most grateful. I should also point out that both disks are relatively new, have been treated carefully and shown no signs of defects, and that the computer has also happily functioned (running UNIX-based OSes for most of the time) for the past six months, without crashes, lockups, or anything.     - Running XP64 on second HDD. Hi, I too have downloaded the trial version and burned it to disk. I tried it on a WDD 60GB IDE HDD and it ran fine but... no drivers for Canon printer and scanner and none to be created, according to Canon tech support and sales, so I uninstalled it for now. So here's the big question; I've purchased a new WDD Raptor 74GB SATA HDD and installed Win XP 32bit onto it, to run all the peripherals I have. Can I re-install my WDD IDE HDD and install the 64bit edition on it, then just run the 64bit OS from that drive when I'd like to practice using the newer 64bit trial OS? I've heard from some that there may be a conflict trying to run an IDE and a SATA drive on the same System but this is my first SATA drive and I just don't know. I don't want to set them up in a RAID config, just have a choice of which OS to use from time to time and still have full access to my printer and scanner using Windows XP Home Edition.     - Windows 2003 Enterprise x64 NIC problems I am trying to run W2003 x64 on dual processor ACER Altos. The Intel PRO/1000 Gigabyte included was setup without glitches.     - access denied when trying to transfer files from another drive I'm getting "access denied" when I try to copy (or even view or go in the folder) my pictures from my old hard drive, need these! is there a "hack" or a way around this?     - Im having problems with installing anything I installed XP 64 and it worked fine. But when I try to install any software it complains. I tried to install the drivers for my motherboard but it won't. So my USB's are not working. I tested this by installing my webcam. While installing I had a few error messages, and after it installed my computer won't detect the webcam so I know the USB's are not working.     - Possible bug using DCOM config I have 2 AMD dual core systems with 64 bit and 32 bit XP dual boot. Both machines are getting this error every day The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {555F3418-D99E-4E51-800A-6E8 9CFD8B1D7} to the user NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE SID (S-1-5-19). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool. I cant find this in the registry. While trying to debug this problem I noticed that i cant get into DCOM config in component services. I get the error mmc.exe ia not a valid 32 bit windows application. mmc works in run so its not that. I'm wondering if any of you have this problem getting into dcom config.     - Managed C++ I was wondering if there is a catch when you use a win32 compiled Managed C++ asssembly on XP 64bit. (2.0 Framework) My app runs on 32 bit systems fine! But it says that there is a BadImageFormatException when I try to run it on XP 64bit. It doesn't matter if the application is compiled for an x64 system or the standard 'mixed platforms'.     - Server 2003 x64 slow networking with wireless clients I've got Windows Server 2003 x64 eval wired to a home router/network. Wired connections to the server work as expected, but wireless connections are painfully slow. I'm talking like dialup slow. Windows reports the speed at 1 Mbps, but I think that is generous.     - Question to Acer Ferrari 4000 Owners Sorry for being slightly off topic (it still has to do with Win64 though). Ok, so on my desktop I have now gone 64 bits 100%, (no dual boot to 32 bit what so ever), and everything works flawlessly. I now want to do the same on my laptop and Iam thinking of getting an Acer Ferrari 4000. I know there are a couple of guys/girls here using that laptop. I will be using the laptop for presentations and I just wonder if Fn-F5 to send output to external projector works with whatever video drivers there are for the 4000 and xp64?     - Game port not recognized by Win XP 64bit Hello, I recently built a really nice machine based on the Asus A8N SLI Deluxe motherboard. I added an AMD 64 Athlon X2 CPU and Windows XP 64 bit. This latter one probably being the cause of my problem but there may be a simple solution out there that I don't know about. So here's the problem: this motherboard comes with a USB/MIDI attachment that has a game port on it (2 USB ports and 1 MIDI/Game port). I installed the attachment and connected an old MS sidewinder joystick to the gameport but the system does not seem to recognize it. I looked at the device manager and it says that no drivers are installed for this device. I downloaded the latest Realtek drivers from the ASUS website but no luck there either. Does anyone know if there are drivers out there that would allow me to use my old joystick? If not, I guess I'll have to get a USB joystick. Thanks, D. I have a Lexmark X1180 printer and when I attempt to install the XP driver (had to have a go!), I receive the following error message: "The Image file C:\Lxk1100\drivers\WIN_XP2K\ENGLISH\Setup.exe is valid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine" I emailed Lexmark and received the following reply regarding drivers for XP-64: "Regarding the error message you are receiving: Unfortunately the X1180 does not have a 64bit driver and there are no plans on making drivers for the 64bit Operative System for that printer."     - affect of 64bit on 32bit IO code My current systems spec is a: Athy 64 3200+ SKT754, 256MB DDR400, PATA133 60GB HDD 256MB GEFORCE FX5600 It seems to be running Americas Army extremely slugishly and the load times are unbareable. And the cpu and hdd is being unduely hammered for sure. Honestly Ive seen a Athlon ThunderBird 1ghz load it *MUCH* quicker with less drama.     - Download of Server 2003 64 bit I registered received email to confirm email and it was accepted. But no email telling where to download. I have done this 8 or 9 times over the last 2-3 weeks. I have rung microsoft and I sent them the first email I received from them and they sent me a copy of the link to download along with a serial number. Does anyone know how to establish the number of free memory slots in an Itanium server running 64-bit Windows Enterprise Edition (apart from physically open the server to check on free slots)? We think the memory is made up from 3 x 8GB quads but cannot be sure. Is there a command available that can be run on the server to show the actual memory layout? There are commands to do this from Unix, so we know the hardware is capable of reporting this level of detail to the OS, we're just not aware of a command to issue in Windows to get this info.     - Outlook Conector in XP x64 I installed Outlook Conector this morning and found out that it will not run from a non-Administrator account using XP x64. I tried to run as a "Power User" and "User" and the Outlook Connector tool bar does not load in Outlook 2003. I can run as a "User" from my laptop using XP-Pro (32bit). latest MSI has listed.
But, problem still may be BIOS related, MSI's Forum has 5 - 7 listings on
the same problem. One of them lists work around, but I have not beable to
get it to work.

I an looking for info about MSI Runtime. I have a new computer and when I go
to load software (Autodesk Vault 4) it aborts and tell me MSI Runtime 3.0
cannot run on XP64. Is there a version that can?
