The present x64 is part of the XP family. Longhorn is the next generation
of Windows. Longhorn Beta 1 will go to the beta testers in the next few
days and will include 32-bit and 64-bit versions of both the client and
server. Longhorn is planned for a fourth quarter 2006 release.

I rather liked "Longhorn". The Home edition could have been "Shorthorn" and
the MCE edition could have been "Flugelhorn." Perhaps outlook could have
become "Posthorn." Windows Auto could have become "Carhorn" (what else?).
Windows XP N would naturally be "Dehorned". The possibilities were endless.

Vista is an apt choice, but users whose boxes don't support Aero Glass will
miss the full meaning.

But I fear the pundits will dub it "hasta la vista" during the runup to
release because it is still going to be quite a while.

I would have thought the name would be much fresher if not disclosed until
just before rtm. Releasing it this far out invites an Osborne effect for
sales of XP to upgraders from 9x/ME and W2k from now until the end of next
year.

But what do I know? </shrug>

Beta testing doesn't cost you anything... It's just a matter of getting on
programs to receive builds.

Sure, you just need the right pc for the OS, and when it comes to Vista, you
need a strong one.... so obviously, not anyone can afford the beta....

Actually, it is a good idea to have two. One for your production stuff and
one for the beta testing. It can be expensive.

I personally have 2 test systems, neither of which belong to my wife. I
wouldn't dare install a beta on her system or there would be a "BIG
production." ;-)

One way to keep costs down is to build your own. I just finished putting
together a test system for the Longhorn beta. I already had the case, 450w
psu, DVD Writer, CD-R/W and DVD combo, and a 120GB Hard Drive. I picked up
an AMD 3000+ 64bit processor, a MachSpeed K8m8ms motherboard, and 1GB DDR
3200 for under $300 CND. It is a low end system but it will work fine for
the beta and I can always all more RAM if need be.

Actually the biggest issue for LH is going to be video cards. For the beta,
I'll stick with what I've got -- on at least a couple of machines it's good
enough. But as we get closer to release, I'll be looking at bumping up the
video card to the then current level from one of the major mfgs. I'll never
spend the $$ for an absolute upper limit GPU, but generally look at the tier
just below that. Which means that my current cards will be fine for the beta,
but I'll want a bit more for production.

Microsoft Explains Windows Vista Name
By Nate Mook, BetaNews
July 22, 2005, 2:16 PM
With the announcement of Longhorn's official name, Microsoft has left many
users asking: Why Windows Vista? Company representatives told BetaNews that
Microsoft felt the new version of Windows "deserved a name that was more
representative of what it specifically brings to customers."

"Today, we live in a world of 'more' -- more information, more ways to
communicate, more things to do, more opportunities -- and at the same time,
more responsibilities. Increasingly, we all turn to our PCs to help us with
that," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "At the end of the day, what you're
after is a way to break through all the clutter to focus on what you want to
focus on, what you need to do. What you're trying to get to is your own
personal Vista -- whether that is trying to organize photos, or trying to
find a file or trying to connect and collaborate with a number of people
electronically."

That is pretty much why I upgraded to GeForce 6800 GT cards pretty much all
around. If that doesn't do it for Aero Glass, too bad. I doubt I will be
willing to spend another grand for video card upgrades.

I think it needed to be a less techie sounding name. I have gotten tired of
years and initials. How many times have we had to explain what "XP" stands
for? And what do years convey? Nothing concerning vision or quality.

How would I even get into it? I thought I heard it was a program that you

Yup, I'm at the Radeon 9600 level right now, with 256Mb on most of my cards.
That should get me through the beta, By th4 time we're shipping or even in
RC, I'll look and see whose cards look good. My only requirement is that I be
able to drive my SGI flat screen monitor with it, and so far that hasn't been
a problem with the ATIs.

9600 will get you through beta 1 for sure because Aero and Aero Glass won't
show up until beta 2. There is some ambivalence coming out of the Vista
teams about requirements and about all I have heard is that a 9800 will do
it for sure and a 9200 apparently will not. They say they will release a
list of cards for beta 2. That's about all I can say and you probably knew
it already.

No beta program is fee-based. You can nominate yourself and you may receive
an invitation as a result. The program betas are a little different than
the platform betas like Vista. In the past, the platform betas have been
oriented more towards developers than consumers so you may have gotten the
idea that you had to pay from the fact that developers pay for their
subscriptions to MSDN. They do not pay an additional fee to beta test.

The Merriam Webster Dictionary describes Vista as...

Pronunciation: 'vis-t&
Function: noun
Etymology: Italian, sight, from visto, past participle of vedere to see,
from Latin vidEre -- more at WIT

1 : a distant view through or along an avenue or opening : PROSPECT
2 : an extensive mental view (as over a stretch of time or a series of
events)

And the Cambridge Dictionary give this description...

vista

noun [C]

a view from a high position After a hard climb,
we were rewarded by a vista of rolling hills.

yup. :) If I were buying today, it would be the 9800. But I'm hoping I'll
sneak in with that 9600 and not have to buy anything new until next year some
time.
