    - Just a last check on my Shut-Down issue. . . Before I throw myself on the phone - anybody think it possible, even by the slimmest of chances, that the CMOS Battery could cause such a thing? The machine is about 8 months of age, and the battery could in reality be significantly older than that. I have not seen any other indications that would make me suspect the battery, I succesfully flashed the BIOS a month ago, but then BIOS's has been seen to have mysteriously severe impact on a system's apparent sanity.     - Audio Codecs, INF install doesn't work, Virtualdub This is driving me crazy. I have upgraded assembled a new system and I am running Vista 64 Unlimited. I do a lot of multimedia work and need to get the audio and video (mostly audio), decoders and codecs back installed. I use a great product called Virtualdub http://www.virtualdub.org/ , as a front end to manage my encoding. I use Divx a lot, etc. Here is the issue: * When I get the audio decoders and codes that I have used before in XP 32 bit, many of them get installed by downloading a "rar" folder, extracting them, then "right-clicking" on the file.INF file and the decoder or codec gets installed. * When I do that, with my 32 bit codecs it appears to have been installed, but in reality nothing gets installed. * Apparently, the .INF file, "right-click" install doesn't work anymore with those 32 bit codecs in Vista 64. * I have some codecs that I have found that are 64bit and work fine in the 64 bit version of Virtualdub. * My issues that with some of my video codecs, mainly Divx, is 32 bit. * While the latest Divx 32 bit decoder works great in Virtualdub 32 bit, I need my 32 but audio codecs to get installed, so I can have by audio and video working together. * Virtualdub in particular likes to use ACM type of decoders/codecs, and the ones I have are set to install by installing the .INF file. * In particular, I am in great need of a AC3 ACM 32 bit codec that I can install. I finally found, in a Chinese web site, where someone packaged up a LAME ACM codec in the form of a .exe file. That installed great !! * I have read some things that I really don't understand about Vista 64 "blocking" the INF installation ?? * What can I do and hopefully, that will be changed in the future. Lastly. My favorite source for audio codecs is Rarewares. http://www.rarewares.org/ . Tjhey have the newest and the best selection of the superior open source codecs, some especially compiled for to work with the CPU that one is using. Great side. PLEASE HELP. Thanks in advance !!     - Bugcheck analysis - can anyone tell me what this means? To cut a long story as short as possible, our Dell PE SC1420 running Server x64 standard SP2 keeps intermittently restarting from a stop 0x00000050 error and logs only a "the previous system shutdown at x on x was unexpected" event in the log. The WinDbg dump analysis (included below) always shows the error to be a nonpaged pool expansion caused by our DAT tape driver (pvdatw2k), which is current and supplied by Dell (there is no native x64 driver). Dell have replaced the drive and cable and most of the major components in the system, but the error keeps occuring. I sent them the crash dump analysis and I have run my own diagnostics and swapped the RAM module positions and a litany of other things (which the system passed) to try and get to the bottom of this issue, but to no avail, and Dell have now closed this case. Whilst I am able to run the dump analysis, I am not really able to make much useful sense of it. I have been keeping records of the memory locations that show up in the crash dump and have noticed that both memory referenced and the instruction address referencing are very similar each time (see below also for previous memory references). The shutdowns always occur when the server is not doing anything e.g. at 3.00am on a weekend. We use ntbackup (and therefore Volume Shadow Copy) to back the server up and I was thinking that may be at fault, but the backup is usually finished before any crash occurs. Has anyone else had VSC cause a nonpaged pool expansion? Is that what the crash dump analysis is showing, or is it the driver? It's clear what memory is at fault, but where is that freed memory exactly? PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50) Invalid system memory was referenced.     - Restoring backup files. I had to do a back up to my system. Now I'm trying to restore the files I need using the Backup Utility Wizard, the Wizard installs the program BUT skips all the files . The report has: Restore completed on 3/1/2008 at 10:52 PM. Directories: 4 Files: 0 Skipped: 13 Time: 6 seconds. In other words restore was completed but nothing was installed. Help please, Natis.     - XP x64 Secondary HD and Drivers Hello All, Been searching the archives for a while and I still can't find the answer i'm looking for; when I installed my second 500 GB hard disk, I went to Disk Management and everything went smoothly except for the fact that I am only left with 465GB of space. I understand that I won't be able to use the full 500 gigs but losing 36gb seems a bit excessive to me. Are there any workarounds or did I do something wrong? Also , when installing certain devices such as a smart card reader or usb data link, they don't support the x64 version of Xp I'm running, and I can't get them to work, even if I try and install the vista drivers or install them to my x86 program file folders. Is there any way to force them to recognize the drivers or an alternative besides using a virtual machine to run these programs when I need them?     - sidebar doesn't work on 64 anymore the exe containing the 64bit version of sidebar doesn't work anymore on my computer. I have executed the 32 bit version and that works fine. when I click on the 64 version I receive a message saying that my version of sidebar is not compatible with my os. it says that I need to check to see if I am running a 64 or 32 os, but I know that I am running a 64.     - Games Folder after SP1 I know there are other posts floating around about Vista not remembering folder's view settings, but I have a very specific issue. Since SP1, the Games folder no longer shows the Preview Pane. If I turn it on, it turns it on for all windows. I can not find a way to get around this problem.     - Stopping Programs From Rotating Cores on Multi-Core System I have XP Pro x64 on an Intel quad core processor. When I am playing multiple simultaneous instances of Everquest, I notice on the Task Manager that the different Everquest sessions are being rotated (seemingly randomly) between different cores, and occasionally, they ALL end up on the SAME core, resulting in everything freezing. My computer can easily handle 3-4 Everquest sessions on a single core, just not 6-7. Ive tried to manually set each instance's affinity via the task manager but its not allowed - and I dont know why. Im using Wineq2 and have the innate Everquest affinity setting to off. No combination of Affinity Settings within both Everquest and WinEQ2 solve this problem. Im told by tech support its an XP issue not Everquest or WinEQ2. So my question is, how do I STOP the OS from rotating my multiple instances of the same game around and force them onto discrete non-changing cores? Also, is there a way to bypass the NOT ALLOWED problem in the task manager and Force then Everquest instances to evenly distribute amongst the 4 cores?     - XP x64 - starved for RAM when handling large files? Hi all, For the past couple of months, my XP x64 system (Athlon X2 4800 w/2GB RAM) has been getting awfully slow when processing large files. For example, burning multi-GB files (I alternate between Nero and ImgBurn), copying large files across my LAN, extracting files with WinRAR or running a repair job with QuickPar. The 'Available Physical Memory' figure under the Performance tab in Task Manager can drop to 20MB or so (20,000--the value is expressed in KB), and as soon as these operations stop, it'll jump right back up to maybe 1.2GB, where it more typically hovers in day-to-day operations. The pagefile usage graph typically stays at around maybe 1.2-1.6GB (even when it gets bogged down like I've described), depending on what I'm doing. It's only when I do these operations with large files that the available physical memory figure drops down to nothing and then the hard drive starts going nuts. I've seen it take upwards of 12-15 minutes (hard drive light stays on solid) to extracting a 4GB RAR file--something that used to barely take 2-3 minutes on that same machine, if that much. The hardware configuration hasn't changed in a *very* long time. It's difficult for me to blame the hardware, as this system used to fly and I used to be able to multitask (doing these same tasks in the background while I'm doing something else) without any problem. Nowadays when I burn a DVD or extract a large RAR file, my system's completely unusable--a problem I haven't seen on a system since the early Pentium days... The pagefile and OS are on separate physical SATA drives, and even though there's plenty of well known techniques to help alleviate bottlenecks, this is the same configuration I've been using since long before this particular problem has started appearing, so again, it's not like all of a sudden my system is poorly configured.     - installation of onboard sound card I have a problem installing Realtek High Definition Audio drivers. When installing the most recent driver from Realtek website (WDM_R178.exe), the driver installation stops with an error message: Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure !! When I look at the device manager, it says that the drivers are not installed. What can be done in the case of 64 bit platforms. My system is win xp pro 64 bit, on board realtek hd audio system.     - What an awfull couple of days! It's not that I'm really whining, but I certainly had my share of misfortunes just now! (I probably deserve it) My 64bit system commited suicide and the good old retired Athlon XP 2400+ machine, that I enlisted as an immidiate reservist, refused to acknowledge that it had a perfectly good HD a short while ago! A new flat-cable sorted that one after quite a bit of rummaging. So, folks: "Here I am - back at the old Win2K, for now". What a wonderful machine this is - it never ceases to amaze me! I'll be reading over your shoulders for a while now! I can't really figure out what happened with the FX-62 system, though, since I wasn't in the room when it shut down. When I restart, it may run for a couple of minutes, or 20 perhaps, and one time it shut down shortly after I entered the BIOS Setup. It's not hot at all, this is the 'Coolest' system I've ever had (in every respect). It inhabits a Antec box with a Seasonic PSU and a handfull of fans. I did manage to see the readout a few times - CPU 29*, MB 33*, and GPU 43* (threshold at 126*!) I spent a whole day in there and the only suspect I can come up with is the Seasonic - I hope it is, because I think I can remember it came with a five year warranty. Avast has not made a sound or anything. The last thing I did was on the twin XP Home system where I had mistakenly installed the Asus Tool 'AI-Nap' when I rebuild that system a short while ago, I had removed that two or three days earlier because it slowed down that system quite severely. Removing it was a bit of an ordeal since parts of it kept popping up, but a few days before that had stopped completely. But this has taken me so long that I'm effectively stuck with the carcas over the week-end. If anybody have any idea what else I can put under the looking glass until then - let's hear it, please!     - Vista x64: 6 GB RAM installted, 4991 MB shows up Hi all: I am running Vista x64 on an ASUS P5 motherboard which says it can support up to 8 GB RAM. I have 2x2 GB chips in memory bank one, and 2x1 GB chips in memory bank 2 for a total of 6 GB. However when I start the machine, in the BIOS the memory shows up as 5056 MB, and in Vista I show 4991.     - Importing a .reg file in 32-bit and 64-bit I need to import a .reg file on 32-bit and 64-bit systems. The .reg file contains settings for a 32-bit-only program. In a 32-bit environment the settings are stored at "HKLM/Software/CompanyName/ ProductName", but on a 64-bit system, the settings are stored at "HKLM/ Software/Wow6432Node/CompanyName/ProductName". I understand the idea of the "Wow6432Node" registry key: 32-bit apps in a 64-bit environment that read and write to the "Software" key, are automatically redirected (behind the scenes) to the "Sofware/ Wow6432Node" key. Unfortunately, this seems to only work when the 32- bit app itself accesses the registry. Is there a mechanism in the .reg file syntax or in the "reg add" command line syntax to ALWAYS treat the .reg file as if it were a 32- bit application accessing the registry? Currently I have 2 .reg files (one for each architecture), but that could get messy. I mean, just imagine if I accidentally imported a "Wow6432Node" on a 32-bit system. I have seen several scripts use the existence of this key to determine what the architecture is. Given, this is a horrible idea for detecting the architecture, but it nevertheless presents the possibility of corrupting the registry.     - vista 64 bit corrupt registry Hi, 6 months ago I bought vista home premium 64 bit. So I installed it without a problem and then proceeded to install the drivers for my hardware and also installed some software. Some installations displayed a message "this is not certified by windows" and I clicked "continue anyways". About 3 days later I turn on the computer and I get the BSOD with a message that my registry is corrupt. System restore or safe mode didnâ??t help and the only solution was to reinstall. This scenario happened 4 times in a row. the 4th time, I installed windows at night, went to sleep, turned it back on next morning and I got the BSOD, thatâ??s when I gave up on it and returned to XP 32 bit. I honestly donâ??t know what is actually causing this, the unsigned drivers or maybe some bad windows update. I canâ??t remember which installation displayed the unsigned warnings. 1.I do want to have vista now. I did read that the 64 bit specifically wants signed drivers while the 32 bit version doesnâ??t mention that. Does this mean if I get the 32 bit version I wonâ??t face these problems again? Is this a known problem with vista 64? Do you know what is causing it? 2.In the past 6 months, did things improve and now vista 64 bit is more reliable? 3.Is vista 32 bit more like my current XP 32 bit, very stable and immune to problems?     - Unauthorised Program Activities I am having an issue an application that uses FTP to connect to a site to download messages. When running the application it will only connect to the FTP site when it is ran as the local administrator despite the user being a member of the local admin group. As of yet I have not found a reason for this but think it could be related to a feature that protect unauthorised processâ??s. If I use the Run As command on the ftp program and uncheck the 'Protect my computer from unauthorised activity' the app will run otherwise it just hangs. if you choose local administrator and enter the password the program will run and download files.     - My first impressions - Vista 64 bit Ultimate Hey gang, Ok, so's I purchased Vista Ultimate 64 bit full retail version, and installed on a new hard drive of it's own, to boot along with my current XP Pro 32 bit install, to mainly play around with it. With the exception of my previously mentioned problems of not getting a choice upon startup which OS to boot into, have to use the bios boot menu to choose the drive to boot from, installation went flawless. Got all my needed drivers, and they installed just fine. My system boots into XP Pro by default, which is really what I want for now, and I can choose myself when to boot into Vista. My wife will not be using Vista for now, so this scenario works pretty good. Anyway, when I first started playing around with Vista Saturday afternoon, I first thought, oh my gosh, what have I gotten myself into? It was so different, and really was not sure I liked some of the differences and way it was layed out. Since then, I have spent some time with it, getting windows mail set up for my newsgroups and email, getting a game installed that I really like, and surprisingly it ran it very well, and just tinkering with it a bit. I have to admit, the more I use it, the more I really like it. My system, is fairly current by today's standards, and I am sure that has a lot to do with it - Vista 64 seems to really be very robust on my hardware. I was hesitant in purchasing Vista, mainly due to what I have read for the past year or so, but for now I am pleasantly surprised. I knew when I did purchase it , it would mainly be to finally get a 64 bit OS, and I am glad I did. I am already finding myself wanting to boot into Vista more than into XP. I have a long way to go before Vista might become my main OS, due to all my critical things I have running on XP, but I can see at some point in the future, it just might be. I am sure I will run across more things I like, and am sure will run across more things I dislike, but I am impressed so far.     - Windows Vista SP1 Friendly Advice I was one of the people who got SP1 for Vista x64 through Windows Update the other day. The install went fine and my computer came back afterwards without any trouble. However, in the days that followed, I noticed that one of my Excel files was corrupted and I had to restore it from backup. I also noticed that I had a USB hardware error in Device Manager and once while installed Call of Duty 4, I had a BSOD. Also, I noticed that sometimes my system would take a longer-than-usual time to read files from my second and third hard drives. I checked into it and came to the conclusion that my INF drivers were not properly reinstalled during the SP1 changes. I have an intel P35 chipset. I got the inf auto-installer, ran it with the command-line switch "-overall" in order to force it to redo the drivers, and it seems like everything is back to normal. I own a full retail license for Ultimate which is installed on an older computer.     - XP 64 and Audio Issues Hope someone can help. On my new system I have a problem with audio distortion under XP64. I set up a dual boot with XP 32 and I don't have any problems with the audio on that OS. The device manufacturer says that there are no driver issues and they have been thoroughly tested under XP64 and Vista64. Microsoft won't help with the problem and I'm running out of time before getting hardware replacements. One of those deals where everyone is pointing at someone else. One other thing I noticed under XP64 is that when it's detecting a device that's been added, or anything plugged into the USB or Firewire port, the mouse freezes or operates erratically until it's done working in the background. I didn't think that going 64 bit meant ending multitasking so I thought this behaviour to be strange. The IRQ's are assigned almost identical to the XP32 OS on the same machine and that behaviour is not showing up on that OS. I have 8 GB ram so I really want the 64 Bit OS to work and I've heard horror stories relating to Vista 64 and performance issues when dealing with audio/video work compared to XP. Any help or direction would sure be appreciated. I'm running the trial version of XP64 with SP2 and all updates. I need to try and get this resolved to decide if I'm going to purchase XP64 or start returning hardware. Since you're talking Dell hardware, you should contact Dell
Tech Support about your problem. You're much more likely to
get relative information than you would get in a Windows
operating system forum. I would suspect your problem is
hardware related and not OS related.
