Does Windows XP x64 include a 64-bit version of the Java Machine or do I need
to use an external one (like Sun)?

You will have to use an external/third party one.

Microsoft will soon be required to end all support for it's Java Virtual
Machine, due to a Java Lawsuit Settlement with Sun Microsystems. You can
read more about it at http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java

bloody crime that as well, because for once MS had produced a decent piece
of software in the form of the MS JVM. I have always found the Sun version
to be unstable and bloated.

One assumes that the 32bit JVM won't install/work on the x64 platform. Be
nice if it did since I have the install files!!

The 32-java does work on Win x64, but it only works with the 32-bit I.E.
Sun has not released a 64-bit version that has Web start and browser
support. Supposedly they do plan to release a 64-bit version for Win
x64 in the near future.

I meant the MS JVM actually. But I suppose it will work with 32bit IE. It's
a shame MS will never release a 64bit JVM.

Why would they, when they will be required to end all support for it in a
couple of years?

Hi, how come, then, java works ok with my IE 64bit? I go to the www.java.com
page and it tells me I've the latest, I go to sites that use java and java
works....
Am I being stupid or have I missed something here?

well quite, of course they won't. What I am saying is the judgement against
MS is, in this case, bollocks, because the MS JVM is way better than the Sun
offering, IMO.

The thread was about JVms in general initially.

Have you installed a 3rd party JVM since you installed x64? or are you
saying you have Java support from a clean install of x64?

Hi, I went to the www.java.com page and installed it from there. I don't
think that XP X64 has it within the OS. Wasn't the reason that MS got rid of
MS Java because Sun successfully sued them, thus forcing MS to remove it...

Actually its more like the MS JVM is the most unstable, incompatible version
ever, you still end up going to Suns website to download their version.

sorry Andre, I couldn't disagree more. I have found the Sun JVM to be
terrible and the MS version to be nothing short of brilliant.

OK, I see now that you installed a 3rd party JVM. I didn't think that x64
had a built in JVM.

I think Microsoft's version stops at Java 1.1, but it's up to 1.5 (5.0) now.
