Hi all,
my question will sound stupid to most, but i need to be sure before making
mistakes..
I have just built a new pc with a 64bit cpu and i'd like to install WinXP
professional on it.
Do i have to install anything before using the cd with the ISO of the
operating system downloaded from Microsoft?
Is it better if i install xp 32bit and check everything before installing xp
x64?

thx,

Zephyr

ps: i'm italian, so please forgive my english..

Hi, Zephyr.

No. Do not install 32-bit WinXP first, unless you just want to be sure that
your hardware actually works. You do, of course, want to be sure that you
have all the 64-bit drivers that you will need - especially any
mobo/chipset/HD drivers that will be needed to actually boot the computer -
but verifying that it will boot to 32-bit does not provide proof that it
will boot to x64. On the other hand, if it WON'T boot to 32-bit... :>( In
that case, check all your cables, CMOS settings, etc. If you do install
32-bit first, it will most likely install itself into C: (or D:), so you
will need to get rid of that (by reformatting during Setup) to let x64
install to your favorite location.

Just boot from the WinXP x64 CD-ROM and follow the prompts.

Your English is great.

Yes, I would advise partitioning your HD into 2 large partitions, unless you
have 2 hard drives. Then install XP Pro 32 bit first to make sure all of
your hardware is working correctly, and so you use all of your hardware in
case some of it or some of your programs that you like to run are not
compatible in XP x64. Also, doing it this way, when you install XP x64, it
will be dual bootable. Do it the other way, XP x64 first, then XP Pro you
will have problems (not unsurmountable) getting XP x64 to boot up.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

I think i'll go for the partitioning solution, it looks more sensible to me.

Just another question: i've read that when you are installing xp x64 you
must have all drivers that you need on floppy disks, since it's the only
storage device that you can use. Is it true or it was just a characteristic
of an older release?

You don't need ALL of your drivers on a floppy. Sound drivers for instance
can be installed later. SATA/RAID drivers do need to be on a floppy, and you
have to do the F6 routine to load them at installation time.

A great place for those drivers is, http://www.planetamd64.com and use
http://bugmenot.com to bypass registration.

André, may I ask you something.
Now that you are a member of Extend64, could you please avoid to tell people
to bypass the registration process on planetamd64 ? I don't see any reason
for. Those guys are doing what they can to help and I'm sure the
registration process is there for a good reason.

Thank you very much

Cheers

You may also need to copy your 64 Bit Network/Modem Driver on to Floppy Disk
if it is not Built in to X64 Edition. Otherwise, you will have no way of
connecting to the Internet, after you install X64
