Hi,
I just bought a Averatec 4100 with a Turion 64 processor. I have downloaded
the free trial for xp64 and burned the iso file to CD. Forgive my ignorance,
but is installing the trial as easy as restarting the notebook with the CD
in, then selecting boot from CD?
Any problems you can think of as this notebook uses Pheonix Firstware
Recover Pro software so there is no recovery CD but it it is on a seperate
partition on the hard drive?
It is a brand new notebook so I would like some good information before I
try to install the XP64.
Thanks in advance,
Martin

Yes, just make sure your first boot device is your optical drive. Concerning
the backup copy of XP on a separate partition (which I personally believe is
a stupid, cheap idea for any PC manufacturer to do), you could create a back
up copy to a Blank when you plan to reinstall it. Note that setup cannot be
launched from within Windows XP 32-bit, you have to boot from the CD.

Won't he be overwriting the backup software when he installs x64? How would
he use the backup?
With no recovery CD, any software he has will be lost. I hope he makes sure
he has the driver situation covered before he pulls the plug.

Well, he is aware that there is a partition with a copy of Windows XP on it,
which is used for reinstall, basically a backup copy of the media. The issue
for him when he copies it to the CD is to make it bootable. The other
alternative would be to image the drive with Windows XP x86 and restore
after he is finished testing Windows XP x64.

If that machine has only a single, C: partition, you really want to think
carefully before you do this. Personally, I would start by burning your
recovery CD (Averitec has to give you an option for that, I'm sure.) Then, I
would use Acronis DiskDirector or other partitioning software to create a
second partition, THEN I would install to that partition after first
ensuring that I'd downloaded any required 64-bit drivers. Keep in mind that
any 32-bit drivers that Averitec provided you will NOT work in x64. You'll
need updated drivers for everything.
