I was given a beautiful new computer all in English.

Then I tired to downlaod my pictures from my digital camera, and it
wouldn't work. Had no idea why. Then I fiddled around and it finally
worked.

Then I bought a webcam and a HP All in One 1408.

I found out that I had a x64 Operating System and had to downlaod
something from the HP website. I finally got my printer working, but I
don't have all the nice stuff that is found on the disc as it is not
compatable with my comptuer. Things such as ink levels would be nice
to know.

My webcam is a Chinese model and I can not seem to find a program that
would make it work. Does anybody have any suggestions? I was assured
in the store that it would work on the x64 system.

There is a 64bit version of Windows XP in Chinese. See here:
http://www.microsoft.com/china/windowsxp/64bit/default.mspx

There is a good overview of the benefits and problems with XP x64 here:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/B/8/6/B868C664-13FC-4F91-9651-5B6D4F1A2F60/Is_Windows_XP_Professional_x64_Edition_Right_for_Me.doc

It's in English, I'm afraid, and I don't believe it has been translated,
though I might be wrong. You should look for a similar document name off of
the Chinese site.

Howdy and Thanks

I don't speak or read Chinese and that's the problem. The HP took a
long time to figure it out, but at least it was in English. The web
cam is in Chinese set up for a x34 system and I have a x64. Is there
not some sort of program that would allow my computer to operate x34
system things?

The HP drivers are still Beta versions and may lack the more sofisticated
functions. My PSC is reporting Inklevels directly off of the Printers own
Panel Display - if your's doesn't, you are out of luck.

Whatever you are short of - now or in the future - be aware of the
likelihood that no-one will tell you. The way to manage this is to pay
frequent visits to the manufacturer's home site (whatever Camera it is that
you have): Complain there, if you think their support is lacking, and
regularly stop by at sites that are known to be informative on whatever
subject you are concerned about. For us, here in this group, one such
resource, for a long time, has been:

www.planetamd64.com

You need to create an account and 'log in', but it is free to use.

And, as you may have learned, one other such resource is this very group
itself!

The big companies just aren't able to cope with the situation you are in -
or an Hungarian speeking costumer in Togo, or whatever, since you are
confident with English, at least that should leave you some opportunities.
The problem of localized hardware, software and support Support, likely
remains.

(I think there should be a war on localized efforts of any kind in this
business.)

You need 64 bit drivers for any hardware that you have. 32-bit drivers will
not work in x64 Edition. (All this is covered in the whitepaper I linked to
earlier. I strongly recommend you read it.)

You have two choices - switch to 32-bit XP, or choose hardware that has
64bit drivers. The best source right now for drivers is still
www.planetamd64.com if you can't find it on the hardware vendor's web site.
For web cams, I think the ones from Creative have drivers, but it's not a
piece of hardware I pay much attention to, so someone else will likely chime
in with more up to date information.

Creative Webcam Instant and Webcam Live! have drivers.
Creative Webcam Live Motion has a beta drivers.
Genius (http://www.geniusnet.com.tw/) has already released drivers for some
of their webcams, namely:
Slim 320
Slim 321C
VideoCAM GE111
VideoCAM GF112

I even managed to hack the Genius GE111 drivers to work with my cheapo
Shanga SN-510 webcam (just a minor modification on the inf file did the
trick!)
