    - End of trial period......DAMN!! Please Help Hi, I Build my pc on my own, and 120 days ago i installed x64 edition because this is the only version of windows that my computer supports. This x64 edition was that trial version, but now i get a message that windows will shutdown in one hour. At that time i installed this version there was no boxed version that i could buy. And it looks like, that it wouldn't happen until vista is released. I now can use my computer 1 hour an than it will reboot.....over and over again. Again, i build my computer myself.     - XP passwords I need help getting into one of my network PCs! We set up PCs with a user profile, keep a generic company password so anyone can get onto the PC, but at the point you want to get onto the network you must log in via remote desktop. All is well and good until a person left, had changed the PC password, now I need the password to get into the PC so I can set it up for the new user & I'm locked out. Anyone have any ideas how I can get back into the PC? Any pro/con to security set up would be welcome too!     - need client-side spam filter for xp 64 Currently using Cloudmark's Spam blocker plugin for Outlook Express which has no 64-bit version. I want something that is highly effective. Yeah, duh :) Also would be nice if it (a) puts spam in a folder so I can check before deleting; and (b) allows me to quickly/easily report a msg it didn't catch as spam. One nice thing about Cloudmark is that it communicates with a central server and shares what it learned amongst all users.     - Multi-terabyte dynamic disks are not supported under 64-bit W2K3! I am trying to span several large volumes. Some are under a terabyte; others are 3+ terabytes. I converted the less than 1 TB partitions to dynamic volumes with no problem. Even the boot (C) disk converted and I didn't need that to be dynamic. But my external hardware RAIDs, which are 3+ TB, will not convert. These are already GPT disks, and I have W2K3 standard 64-bit edition with SP1 and all the latest patches. It gives me a bogus error that "The operation did not complete," falsely claiming there are more details in the event log. Interestingly, there is a knowledgebase article, 826823 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826823/en-us, that seems to be describing this exact problem, but the article claims it affects only the 32-bit editions of Windows Server 2K3. Of course, that hotfix will only work on the 32-bit edition.     - need 64-bit spam-plugin and dhtml menu maker Hey gang - I really want to make the leap to XP64. Mainly so I can use more RAM and have a bit more performance. I've investigated all the tools I currently use and found with the exception of two, they all will work in XP64. The two apps: Cloudmark's Spam blocker plugin for Outlook Express DHTML Menu Builder by xFx Jumpstart (for creating dropdown menus for web sites) I really like these two programs but could live with converting to something else if you all have recommendations? BTW, I'm not looking for just ANY spamblocker or ANY menu-maker. These two programs I currently use work very very well. In the case of spam, I want something that is highly effective. Yeah, duh :) Also would be nice if it (a) puts spam in a folder so I can check before deleting; and (b) allows me to quickly/easily identify a msg it didn't catch as spam. One nice thing about Cloudmark is that it communicates with a central server and shares what it learned amongst all users. OK then there is the menu-maker software. It has quite a few templates. On 32-bit Windows, BIOS data (version, date, manufacturer) can be found under registry key HKLM\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System. However, On Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition SP1, the BIOS information is not found under that registry key. I found registry key HKLM\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\BIOS but it does not contain any BIOS data.     - New server Install - wont shutdown I have recently built a new server and installed the 64-bit version of XP Pro. The system has the Intel SC5300LX chassis, an Intel SE7520AF2 mainboard, 2GB memory, 2 - 3.60GHz Xeon Processors, Sony CDRW Drive, and a 250GB SATA hard drive. I got the OS, drivers, updates, and utilites install. The system is working great and reboots fine, but when I go to shutdown I get the saving settings box it goes away and I am left with a blue screen, the mosue is locked and it just sits there. It will not go any further. I even let it set for 15 minutes before I just help in the power button. I saved everything I downloaded to the system and I did another clean install of the OS. I did not install any updates or utilited and tried the shutdown again and it does the same thing in the same spot. Still it will reboot just fine. So I decided maybe a new bios would take care of the problem. I went to Intel's site and got the most recent update for the mainboard. I got it installed and it still has the same problem in the same spot. So right now I have a system with only the OS installed, nothing else, and it will lock up on shutdown after the save settings screen goes away.     - BEWARE of Avast virus software Whoever suggested to me in this newsgroup to use Avast virus software because it was compatible with XP64, gave me the wrong advice, I am guessing because he/she were affiliated with the software and wanted to peddle it in this newsgroup because advertisement here is free. Anyhow, here is what I found: 1. After scanning my system (several times) I noticed that Avast will NOT scan ALL files (this in itself is enough to dump this Avast shit into the garbage). 2. When I tried to remove Avast from my system with Add Remove Programs, it would not let me uninstall it without going into the registry and removing it from there.     - Program files difference Hi Is there any significante difference between the program files folder and the program files (x64) folder other than human organizational helpfulness ? The reason I ask is because I want to install some stuff that is normally in program files on other OS's into program files on my pro 64 OS (rather than program files (x64).     - Can not find MMDRIVER.inf in my Windows XP system32 folder I built a desktop PC in 2003, but I never heard any sound from this PC.     - native CDROM drivers don't work P5LD2-Deluxe Pentium D - 92 My system was running just fine with a working CD-RW when, one day, th CD stopped working. It is recognized just fine via BIOS but when I loo at it in Device Manager it says, "Windows cannot load the device drive for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" I have purchased two other CD's but the drivers fail to load for the also.     - "Machine Check Error" after resume from hibernation, reproducable Every time when I resume my PC from hibernations, I get an error message saying "Machine Check Error" melding. It looks like a regular messagebox with a red X, so it's not a BSOD or anything. When clicking OK, the PC functions normally. In the BIOS, everything is set to default/auto, as far as overclocking settings are concerned. The problem first occurred yesterday, when I upgraded my Athlon64 3000+ to an Athlon64 X2 4400+ dualcore CPU.     - dual boot x64 & x32 XP I think I made a mistake; I had new PC built with an AMD 64bit dual core with the intention of starting to get familiar with x64 but I wanted the x32 for my everyday work. The technician set up a dual boot but loaded both (the x32 XP Pro & the x64 XP Pro) onto the 'C' drive with no partitions. I am having lots of problems; is my only alternative to reformat the drive into a 'C' & 'D' and reinstall both OS's, each in their own partition?     - Unknown Device Problem Resolved After you install this OS using a SATA HD you are going to find that every time you boot even after you have installing all of the updates available that Device Manager is going to inform you that it has found an Unknown Device (Psuedo SCSI Processor Device) and wants to install the drivers for it. Do not waste your time searching for it on the CD but the driver is available. The only way you can get this device (unless it is a download at the Silicon Image web site) is to do a Custom install at the Windows updatesite using the 32 bit version of Windows XP. and install it. You can then boot back into the 64 bit version and do a driver update from the properties window and select Not This Time, At the next windows selectselect the Browse option and allow it to search the Windows folder of the 32 bit version till it finds it. Then allow it to install and the mystery device will go away. I do not know why it finds the driver from Silicon Image when doing a custom search in the 32 bit version and not the 64 bit version at the update site. This drive update has been added over the past week and shows up as a Hardware Update which you have to choose manually by clicking the Hardware Updates located in the panel on the left side after doing your custom search. Turns out Ralink has drivers on-line for XP x64 and Linux/Mac too. Be aware, and do note that there are two sets of drivers on the CD as well as among the downloads (RT2500 and RT61) - I havn't figured out if they are both installed or if they cover different versions?     - OT: Missing hal.dll and C unreadable My apologies for not posting this in the 32 bit forums, but I know that many here certainly know their Windows... so a quick question. A colleague brought in his Dell. Won't boot. XP Home. Missing hal.dll "...Please reinstal the missing file...." Can't copy the missing file to \System32 because the hard drive has become unreadable; so it's missing a lot more than hal.dll. Drive shows in BIOS. Can't read or boot. Starting with 98 floppy, I get the "Your hard drive does not appear to be partitioned..." message Booted with CD. Was warned off of a fixmbr saying the disk was "non-standard" and I might bollix things. So I did a chkdsk instead. Very slow going. I'm letting it run overnight. I'm hoping that the chkdsk will at least enable the computer to see the contents of the drive so I can reinstall Windows. I'm not optimistic. Anything else I can try? I am thinking of buying a used Fujutsu M3097DG scanner. This is a SCSI
