    - Dell NAS 2003 r2 64 bit server NFS mapping I cannot get any UNIX accounts (other than root) to have permissions to access an NFS mount. I have copied to the NAS the passwd and group file that is the same for all *NIX machines. Can mount as root and create files, but other users have permission denied when trying to navigate into mount. In the past I have chmod 777 the mount directory before mounting to it to ensure all users have permission to use the mount point. When I mount the share, the directory changes to drwx----- and the UID/GID changes to numeric numbers. Microsoft Services for NFS settings: User Name Mapping Server: localhost User Name Mapping : Use Password and Group files Simple Mapping: Unchecked User Maps: 1-to-1 mapping of root and a single user account. Group Maps: root=>Administrators user=>Users Server for NFS: Default settings Share properties: Sharing Permissions: Everyone - Full control NFS Sharing: Allow anonymous access is unchecked. Permissions: All Machines Read-Write Allow root access is checked. Here is my current configuration: Network: Peer-to-Peer configuration no domain controllers or NIS servers. Hardware: Brand new PowerEdge 2950 with Windows 2003 R2 Fedora Core 4 servers trying to mount as clients Does anyone have a step by step example using the new R2 controls to perform the simple task?     - ntune and x64 lock up My system was hanging up just at the point where you logged in and saw the wallpaper, but the bar at the bottom on the screen and shortcuts didn't appear. I could get the task manager to run, and stopped ntune to get the system to boot. It didn't happen every time, but often. I uninstalled ntune on a hunch, and the problem is history.     - COleDateTime not defined Hi, it seems COleDateTime is not defined in Platform SDK for Windows Server 2003 R2 when compiling C++ unmanaged code for the AMD64 platform. Is this class available in 64-bits? I use ParseDateTime and I don't think there is any equivalent in unmanaged code. I hesitate to use managed code in case the .NET Framework will not be installed on the target system, although I don't know how likely that would be for someone with the 64-bit Windows OS.     - x64 and Canon MF8170c I was all gung-ho to install x64 on my new Dell workstation. Everything went great. The install was smooth and all seemed well....until I needed to print.     - XP64 (c:RAID Array) & XP32 (SATA) Dual Boot Probs Hello I currently have XP64 installed on a RAID array and have done for som time. I now need to install XP32 for work purposes. I have installed a new hardrive to do this and installed XP32Pro following all th instructions. At the end of the installation, the computer restarts and I get a error message saying that windows has failed to start properly. I can no get XP32 to load at all. When I switch teh boot device order back t removable/HD etc, I do get a boot menu and XP64 still boots fine. Bu again, when I try XP32 , I get the same message. Do you know what need to do to get this to load?? Just some more info, here is what is detailed in my boot.ini.. When I am in Win Recovery console, th XP version in on c: and m old XP64 and all my other stuff is on d:. Something really strabg seems to be going on with my drives When I have loaded into XP64, they appear as normal (i.e RAID as C: an new drive with XP32 as f:.) A question just landed in my in-box, someone who read one of my contributions somewhere wants to know if his SATA 150 HD will work on his newly acquired SATA2 only Mobo.     - Soundcard hosed? Right in the middle of playing, I lost sound. It's a SoundMAX integrated (onboard) chip/card in a Dell Precision x64 system I have had about 14 months. System says the driver cannot start because of a problem with the hardware. I have tried: - rebooting - turning system off to sit awhile. - reinstalling the driver - system restore (ha! doesn't work on x64) - checking event log (no errors) - multiple audio players (WMP, iTunes) Does it sound like the hardware is hosed to you?     - Standard Floppy Hi, all. a:) I have two desktop machines running at the moment, both are having floppy drives that are rarely used. Perhaps the infrequent activity is making them depressed, because now that I need them - one never finishes reading a floppy before timing out, or alternatively claims that the file system isn't recognised. That one has just been sitting there, sulking for some time now, putting it in the other machine showed the diskette to be allright. Now, though, that drive suddenly isn't displayed at all in the filemanager, but it does show up in the BIOS setup. We've had questions on floppy booting, but I need it now for the SATA/RAID drivers. b:) I am tireing of this, I need this stuff to be stored on reliable media, and I wonder if it is possible to make an ISO from a floppy, burn it to other media and have the installation seeing it as the floppy. I ask this since the Windows Installers typically refers to CD drives as the [A:] drive and assumes it can only do this if the CD is originally built from a floppy ISO. Any thoughts and comments will be appreciated. I wouldn't mind having to dump the RAID right now, but I need the SATA drivers very bad - it's just ironic that they are coupled up together. Tony. . .     - Peripherals I have a MS Sidewinder Precision Racing wheel and an X64 OS. Why can't Microsoft or some one come up with drivers to make this wheel ands OS work together? Is there a workaround?     - Daemon Tools 403-x64 Released This is possibly old news but worth posting. An updated version of Daemon Tools has been released. Version 403 is available in both x86 and x64 versions. Those of you that had trouble installing it because of the SPTD-Driver issue will be happy to know that this version contains SPTD-Driver (V1.25) and corrects that problem. For those of you do not know what Daemon Tools it is a CD/DVD rom emulator that will allow you to mount in a virtual CD/DVD rom an image file and access as though it were the original media. This can be usefull if you have a large library of CD's you have to carry arround with you and want to reduce the amount of physical media you cary.     - Third part firewall available - Freeware I have tested several firewalls that are supposed to support Windows XP Pro x64 with not real success until I stumbled upon Ghostwall. It is a very small, no frills, little memory and process footprint firewall that runs under x64. Don't expect popups to ask you if you want to let the program out but it does have a built in packet/bandwidth monitor.     - Curious Problem on x64 repair installs (bug??) Every time I have tried to do a repair install on x64, it always hangs at "Installing Devices", it's not a lockup, as the info screens change, and the pulser keeps moving, and the caps lock works. When I open Mediaplayer and play some MP3s, Aero functionality dissapears. I can't use flip 3d and the desktop display settings are set to Aero basic.     - sizeof(int) on x64 system? I've built some code under Visual Studio C++ (2005) and sizeof(int) is 4 bytes whether the code is built for 32 or 64 bit platforms. (I'm running on a 64 bit machine.) I was of the impression that the Ansi spec defines 'int' to be the same as the native word size of the machine.     - Word XP & Word 2003 broken in X64 Amazingly, when I open up Word, all other windows/folders on the desktop (or those I open up) can no longer be dragged, resized, minimized, etc. in real time; rather, all of these operations occur quite slowly. This slow-down does not occur with any other Microsoft 2003 application or with any other application, for that matter. In addition, when I try to select text in one other application (Stata), text selection is no longer in real time either. If I am editing a modest sized document (e.g. 400k), this delay moves from annoying to debilitating. My system (Dell Precision 690, two dual-core processors, 8 GB memory, Raptor boot drive, 3 additional drives in RAID 0) is sufficient to run Word 2003. Oddly, when I tested WordPefect, there was no problem at all. Then, when WP converted a Word file, then wrote a Word file, the resulting Word-formatted file caused only a small effect, as if the file were tiny when it was still around 400k. What on earth is happening? Microsft Support was most unhelpful, except in confirming that yes, there is a bug. When I emailed this issue to managers@microsoft.com (as tech support suggested), I got laughably inept replies. Surely I couldn't be the only one to have enountered this problem (?!). In case you are wondering about the earlier SPAM in this newsgroup from Lebanon, read the following and you'll understand: How Hizballah Hijacks the Internet The group pops up on unwitting Web sites around the world in order to communicate, recruit and fundraise By HILARY HYLTON/AUSTIN What do a small south Texas cable company, a suburban Virginia cable provider and Web-hosting servers in Delhi, Montreal, Brooklyn and New Jersey have in common? Since fighting broke out in Lebanon, they all have had their communications portals hijacked by Hizballah. Hackers from the militant Lebanese group are trolling the Internet for vulnerable sites to communicate with one another and to broadcast messages from Al-Manar television, which is banned in the U.S. In the cyberterrorism trade it is known as "whack-a-mole" - just like the old carnival game, Hizballah sites pop up, get whacked down and then pop up again somewhere else on the World Wide Web. "As the Israelis tighten the noose on Hizballah in Lebanon, these communication nodes become critical," said Fred Burton, a former U.S. counterterrorism official and now vice president of Stratfor, a security consulting and forecasting company in Austin, Tex. In today's asymmetrical warfare, the Internet is vital to groups like Hizballah who use it to recruit, raise money, communicate and propagandize, Burton said, including transmissions from Hizballah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah. The recent hijacking of a South Texas cable operator is a case study in how Hizballah moves in. The Texas cable company has an agreement with a New York-based satellite communications aggregator, which moves feeds to a variety of customers from throughout the world, including Lebanon. A technician in New York made an "improper connection," according to an official with the cable company's communications provider who detailed the hijack for TIME. That opening was detected by Hizballah. Al-Manar, widely considered a mouthpiece for Hizballah and categorized as a terrorist group by the U.S., linked to the small cable company's IP (Internet Protocol) address, which can be thought of, in simple terms, as a telephone number. Hizballah essentially added an extension on that telephone line allowing their traffic to flow. Hizballah then gets the word out through e-mail and blogs that it can be found at that IP address and the hijack is complete. If the hijack is not detected, the IP address can be linked to a new domain name and that opens up the site to anyone who might search online for Al-Manar content. Hizballah uses these Web sites to run recruitment videos and post bank account numbers where supporters can donate funds. Hijackings are normally quickly discovered by the Society for Internet Research, an informal consortium of self-described "freelance counterterrorists" who sit in home offices and dens tracking jihadist activity on the Internet. In turn, they alert the media or simply call the hijacked company. Given Hizballah's links to Iran, which offers its operatives diplomatic cover around the world, according to Burton, monitoring Hizballah's Internet presence is vital as part of the "cat and mouse" game with Western intelligence. But shutting them down also limits their fundraising, recruiting and propaganda efforts, Burton said. In March, the whack-a-mole players gained a new weapon in their fight when the U.S. Treasury announced that any U.S. company found to be doing business with Al-Manar will be subject to sanctions and possible prosecution. The new rules mean that freelance counterterrorists can remind slow-moving, reluctant or even compliant Web hosters that they face financial sanctions if they do not act to shut down Al-Manar.     - Performance data from 32-bit windows MMC/WMI not available on 64 bit So.. I'm trying to remotely get performance monitor data (counters, specifically) through MMC from my 32-bit Windows XP workstation, as well as from my 32-bit 2k3 Enterprise R2 server farm, sourced from 64-bit 2k3 enterprise R2. Sorry for the jabber. The version of the operating system on the computer named xxx.xxx.xxx is later than that on the local computer. This operation is not available from the local computer. I am running MMC 2.1 on XP and 3.0 on my server platforms. I am still unable to see or list performance counters remotely. I should also note that I'm unable to see the Event log. I am still able to list remote Shares, open files, users/groups, etc, on the 64 bit platform. I have verified wbemperf.dll to be in both SysWow64 and System32 on the 64 bit platform. Any suggestions? ((End result is to be able to run load testing on the sites on the 64 bit platform from within Visual studio 2005 from 32-bit Windows platforms, keeping track of IIS and ASP.NET counters -- IIS is in 64 bit mode.)) I have an implementation of Windows 2003 Standard (64-bit) running on AMD
processors. This server is going to run an application called Archive
Manager. The vendor says it has to run on 1.1 Framework (32-bit). At the
beginning of my implementation they told me (64-bit) was fine so I spec'ed a
high end system. When I went to install the application I got a few
warnings. They then changed there tune and said if it runs on a (64-bit)
system it was not supported. Are VP's are trying to talk to there VP's but
they are moving slow. I tend to think it will work and they are just
feeding me a canned response. I have googled this and found a number of
articles regarding 1.1 Framework on (64 bit) systems.

Does anyone have any advice or experience on this? Thanks.

You can run the 32-bit version of .NET Framework 1.1 on your x64 Edition
system. It runs in the WOW64 subsystem.
