Free Memory in System Properties
I just had 8GB of RAM installed in an xw4300 64-bit box (Windows XP 64 bit
editon). Like before, when I only had 4GB, Windows System Properties tab
shows 3.5GB of total RAM.
Why is this the case? Are there any tools that show the true amount of RAM
in a box -- not the amount reported by Windows?

News: Microsoft Smooths Road to Vista with Apptimum Buy
Qoute:
Microsoft announced March 7 that it is has acquired application-transfer
specialist Apptimum for an undisclosed sum.
Formerly Eisenworld, Apptimum, based in Sunrise, Fla., began in 1998 and is
best known for PC relocation products branded with the vacation-friendly
moniker "Alohabob," named after the founder's father, who lives in Hawaii.
Microsoft's plans for the acquired intellectual property and technology
assets of Apptimum are focused on streamlining the application transfer
process between older and newer computers, with an emphasis on Window's
Vista migration.
Read the rest here http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1935330,00.asp
Interesting purchase, I thought originally that Microsoft was developing a
migration technology in house for Vista. My reason for believing this was
after seeing a demo presented at WinHEC 2004 by Microsoft Platform Group
President Jim Allchin showing what had seem to be a prototype migration tool
for what at the time was named Windows "codename" Longhorn.
Alohabob has been around for a while, I first heard about it on TechTV as a
highly recommended solution for migrating PC settings to a new computer. Its
gonna be free for Windows Vista users, so you really can't beat that. What I
think would be great is migration of registry settings, if Microsoft works
migrating Registry settings to Vista from say.. a Windows XP computer, it
would definitely be awesome.

PROBLEMS!
Hi, Ive recently took the jump to xp x64, the main reason for this is because
of how quick it deals with large apps. Its on my system and working (in a
fashion) however none of my software seams to work now, Quark, Corel, Adobe
and even my security is down.
Ive been to the sites and tried to look for x64 updates and drivers but with
no results! Yes I know its my fault and I should have done a little more
research into compatibility.
I'm possible going to go back to the 32bit system but I'd like to give this
a chance to work.
Any help on this would be very great and suggestions for software that other
people are using in XP x64 would also help.
Thanks in advance,

different behavior of AMD64 compiler 14.00.40310.41 on Windows xp and 2k
Hi All,
I found Windows AMD64 compiler behaving differently When used on
Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2K professional. (both using Windows 2003
SP1 SDK - April edition)
I've a .tlb which is imported in my .cpp file. This typelibrary has a
structure defined inside and I'm using it in my code.
XXX.cpp:
#import COMLib.tlb
using namespace COMLib;
....
main()
{
COMLib::STRUCTDAT structData;
}
....
//
When the project is compiled on XP SP2 with VS2003 IDE, the tlh code
generated looks like follows:
// Created by Microsoft (R) C/C++ Compiler Version 14.00.40310.41
(cda64a29).
//...
#pragma once
#pragma pack(push, 8)
namespace COMLib {
....
....
#pragma pack(push, 4) //////Here is the difference, on WIN2k, this
value is 8.
struct STRUCTDAT
{
unsigned long ValidationDataLength;
unsigned char * ValidationData;
};
#pragma pack(pop)
....
....
}
#pragma pack(pop)
While on Win2k the same project under same environment the tlh
generated looks like
// Created by Microsoft (R) C/C++ Compiler Version 14.00.40310.41
(b739b039).
//...
#pragma once
#pragma pack(push, 8)
namespace COMLib {
....
....
#pragma pack(push, 8) //////Here is the difference, on WINXP, this
value is 4.
struct STRUCTDAT
{
unsigned long ValidationDataLength;
unsigned char * ValidationData;
};
#pragma pack(pop)
....
....
}
#pragma pack(pop)
Because of the wrong alignment on XP, sample built here fails while
built on Win2K succeeds. Does anyone know why compiler is behaving
this way? How to make it build correctly on WinXP? Tag: No Flip3D in Feb CTP? Tag: 29682
Windows Vista 5308 64bit
Hi I installed Windows Vista 5308 Beta 64bit on my Acer 5002 WLMi. It took a
massive 10GB hard disk space. The first window I got after running it had a
'Not Responding' message! Windows Vista has an amazing look with a lot of
softwares pre installed. So you don't have to install softwares such as
Windows Defender later on. I tried installing the drivers I installed for
Windows XP X64. The AC97 driver got installed perfectly. The SIS VGA driver
was giving some repeated errors during installation but still the files and
drivers were installed. Sadly, the SIS VGA (SIS M760GX) is highly unstable on
vista. My 802.11b/g driver failed to install.
Has anyone of you tried installing Windows Vista? Please let me know your
experience.

My upgrade from evaluation to full went well...
Ok, upgrade went reasonably smooth. I upgraded from within Windows rather
than booting off the CD. Chose the option to upgrade from there.
The one issue I had was when prompted for my nForce mobo drivers. For those
of you without a 2nd computer, make sure you DL the drivers and unzip them
on a CD before upgrading. Fortunately, I have other workstations, so I
created a CD on one of them.
The other issue was that during the installation of the mobo drivers, the
USB won't work until the driver installation is complete. Which means...if
you have your keyboard and mouse plugged into USB, you're sunk. I had to
dig up the USB / PS2 converters that I had deep in my junk drawer so I could
reboot and be able to click through the installation.
Otherwise, all is well.

A8n32-sli deluxe possibly the problem?
The problem is, one, my xp proffessional copy won't install, because its
pre-servicepack 1 or 2, pretty much the first cd outa the factory. I
couldn't get windows to update, or install dx9 or my nvidia drivers or my
asus drivers, i basically couldn't get my copy to install, so i got this
trial, and probly am gonna purchase it(i was ignorant and didn't no that you
could run both 64 and 32 bit, i thought it was solely 64 bit(none of my
games!!!))
the deal is, both my mouse and keyboard are usb driven, not ps2. After
restarting, or shutting down, crashing, no matter how i restart my computer,
when windows reloads, the: Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller. always
comes up with an error, disabling my usb devices. so i had to kipe my
roomates ps2 mouse and swap(major degrade from my razer diamondback le to a
MI micro innovations mouse...) to get around in windows with some sort of
input device. to get them to work, i uninstall the standard openhcd usb host
controller, then on usb controllers i tell it to scan for new hardware, and
it finds and gets everything up and running correctly. the usb ports work at
the bootup screen from bios all the way up until about 2 seconds from leaving
the "Windows xp x64 edition" blue scrolling bar screen. then the num-lock
key turns off and no more keyboard. Going to a ps2 keyboard is not an
option, as i have a logitech g15 keyboard(i spent way to much on my usb input
devices to have to deal with this shizen) I have all updates from logitech,
windows, and I just went to asus and there usa download site is down
temporarily, but i no i have the latest bios and i'm sure that there arn't
any updates there. so i am just clueless, is there someway to lock the
device manager out from resetting?

Another write-up
Techies in Microsoft license reading bombshell -
New Motherboard =New PC = New OS, says Redmond.
Tech blogs are fizzing with rage at the 'revelation' that
Microsoft small print says a new Windows OEM license must be purchased if a
motherboard is changed or upgraded.
Microsoft is quoted as saying that the 'heart and soul' of a PC
lies therein, and so changing it amounts to creating a new machine. A 'new'
machine, according to Microsoft, requires a new Windows Installation. Other
license types do not face such restrictions.
Comments about the newly-uncovered atrocity are typically less
than complimentary towards Redmond. "They are trully [sic] evil,? fumes one.
Several others go for the succinct and to-the-point: ?**** Micro$oft."
We felt more gracious, so we threw in some asterisks instead.
For Microsoft's part, it claims this has always been the case.
And their licensing document seems to corroborate the assertion.
"An upgrade of the motherboard is considered to result in a "new
personal computer." Microsoft OEM operating system software cannot be
transferred from one computer to another. Therefore, if the motherboard is
upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect then a new computer has
been created, the original license expires, and a new full operating system
license (not upgrade) is required. This is true even if the computer is
covered under Software Assurance or other Volume License programs."
End Users reading their license agreements? Well, well, whatever

64-bit COM dll structure access
I've a COM 64-bit dll built with Windows 2003 SP1 SDK April 2005
edition on Windows XP SP2. All MIDL options and project settings are
done correctly (as far as i know) to build the 64-bit DLL.
This DLL defines a structure of the form
typedef struct sVALIDATION
{
UINT32 unDataLen;
BYTE *pData;
}S_VALIDATION;
and has an interface method to fill up this structure of the form:
HRESULT FillUpStructure([in,out,ptr]S_VALIDATION *pSValidation);
{
//pseudo code
pSValidation->unDataLen = 3;
pSValidation->pData = (BYTE *)CoTaskMemAlloc(3);
//... set bytes
}
Now I'm using the tlb generated above, in my client application and
calling the FillUp method
//pseudo code
#import COM64.tlb
using namespace COM64Lib;
void main()
{
S_VALIDATION sValid;
memset(&sValid,0,sizeof(sValid));
try
{
IValidationPtr pValidation =
IValidationPtr(__uuidof(ValidationClass));
//....
pValidation->FillUpStructure(&sValid);
wprintf(L"%d",sValid.unDataLen); // prints "3" correctly
wprintf(L"%X",sValid.pData[0]); //throw up here
}
catch(...)
{
//....
}
//cleanup code
}
QUESTION:
When I'm accessing the pData value, it is throwing error. I debugged on
XP x64 machine and noticed
that pData pointer occupies 8 bytes. But when it returns from the
method call, the higher 4 bytes are being set
so the client code ends up accessing value at [00a1308e'00000000]
instead of [00000000'00a1308e] where actual data is present.
pData pointer before the call as seen in memory window {00 00 00 00 00
00 00 00}
pData pointer after the call as seen in memory window {00 00 00 00 8e
30 a1 00}
Why is it happening this way? I started stepping through code and went
little deep where RPCRT4!.... module doing some unmarshalling stuff.. I
didn't understand this part and quit. Please help me.

solaris 10 and windows x64 dual boot redux
A question regarding previous posts on this, and sorry if I missed
anything: would it be better to use the windows x64 boot manager or

I've dual booted linux and win before, but I've never done it with

messing up my MBR, which I've done before with LILO (I'm not sure
exactly what I did to achieve this). So, any help is welcome.

Avoid HP Color LaserJet printers
Background: Bought an HP 3500N last fall, to use in our server room.
Status: Useless when attached to server. HP cannot provide a good x64
driver, even though all sales materials claim x64 is supported.
Multiple calls to HP support over a four month period yield no joy.
Contrary to what HP says or publishes on the support site, x64 color LJ
drivers are still in beta, and DO NOT WORK.
Combine that with no good DVD burning s/w for backups being available and
you have a really "red-headed stepchild" of a product.

to sell another product?

ActiveX component can't create object error
Hi all,
Some of my clients are reporting this error on a 64-bit Windows when running

-----
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a01ad'

This error is very common on 32-bit Windows and can be easily fixed by
adjusting permissions on the COM DLL. However, it seems that this trick no
longer works on 64-bit Windows.
Can someone shed some light?

Computer locks up whilst web browsing
I am having intermittent issues whilst browsing the web. I go to click on a
link, and the browser (both IE and Firefox) shows the word "Stopped" in the
bar at the bottom, the mouse shows as busy, and nothing happens at all. I
go to close the browser, which is not responding (even though Windows does
not tell me that it is not responding), the browser closes but leaves the
reference to its instance in the taskbar.
If I try to open Task Manager, or any other program, the computer does not
respond at all. The only thing to do is reboot manually. Whatever is
causing the problem locks up the pc completely.
I would love to know what is causing this problem. It only happens when I

Nothing at all shows up in the event log.

Failed Install - Please help I'm at my wits end...
Okay, I had some real nasty spyware on my old XP install and nothing (I mean
nothing) would get rid of it. It finally ground me down to the point of a
clean install. I decided to buy Win XP x64 from Newegg.com and a few new
hard drives for the clean install. I formatted the 500 GB drive and then
installed it, only I couldn't get through the install. After I entered my
key and time zone, the computer rebooted (as it should). However, it then
came up into the program with such garbled graphics that nothing was visible.
I can tell from the garbled background that it went into a higher resolution,
but there isn't a clear letter, or any letter, on the screen; there is only
some blue background and EXTREME tearing. It never asked me to increase the
resolution, nor can I find a way to keep it from doing so. I have tried 3
times all with the same result. I wanted to call MS but they actually wanted
to charge me although it isn't due to incompetence. This is now nothing more
than a very expensive coaster and since it has been opened Newegg won't take
it back. I feel cheated. So I reinstalled Win XP 32 and it didn't have the
same problem. Maybe I should ask for the most updated production to be sent
to me (with updated drivers)? Yet, I have no one to ask, unless I want to
pay more for something that isn't working.
Here is my info:
DFI Lan UT DR motherboard
AMD FX-57
2 gigs (512 x4) Mushkin Redline 4000 dual channel
Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX (not in SLI mode for install)
Dell Ultrasharp 24in WideScreen Monitor (also tried Samsung 17 LCD monitor,
no help)
Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard (working fine)
Pioneer DVD-RW 109
2x500 GB WD drives
1 bad weekend
If it had installed, I would have went into safe mode or VGA mode, but how
can I do this when it hasn't finished installing? Remember, only 1 reboot
after I enter the key and time zone, then I can't get it to go further since
it is awaiting input from me, the end user.

BlueSoleil for XP64
This may interest some people
A new version of IVT BlueSoleil was released yesterday (version 2.1.2.0)
and can be downloaded from their website
It's not a specific XP64 version as it include all version drivers which
might confuse people at first glance. Tag: No Flip3D in Feb CTP? Tag: 29444
Windows Script Control (msscript.ocx) not working in 64 bit!?
Hello,
I can't make the MsScript control objects to works under Windows XP 64.
c++ code:
...
CComPtr<IScriptControl> spScriptCtrl;
HRESULT hr = spScriptCtrl.CoCreateInstance(
L"MSScriptControl.ScriptControl",
NULL,
...
The project is working fine in a 32 bits process, but not in 64 bits.
(Same source code, same OS, same computer)
It looks like this component do not exist in 64 bits!
Does it exist another way/objects, that replace MsScript.OCX for 64 bits
applications ?

Xp64 and partioning
I have a 64 bit system, and have been running windows xp. I am thinking
about taking the plunge to the 64 bit operating system. I have a lot of
files, movies, music, etc on my computer. My question is can I partition a
drive under windows xp and store my files there, and then access that drive
once I install the x64 software? I dont want to install the software on the
partitioned drive, I just want a place I can safely store software and files
so I dont have to burn a hundred cds! Any suggestions? Thanks! Tag: No Flip3D in Feb CTP? Tag: 29434
x64 - A smooth transition
I would like to thank everyone who has posted into this ng as by going the
postings them I have been able to install x64 successfully. I have been so
impressed with x64 that I have changed over to it completely.
I thought that I should post my experience.
- Acer 5024WLMI
- AMD Turion 64 ML-34
- 1.25Gb RAM (upgraded from the 512Mb standard)
- 100Gb HDD
- ATI Mobility Raedon X700
The Acer website had all the x64 drivers & BIOS upgrade available.
All the Acer supplied software installs and works - except the Norton 2005
AV, which I wasn't using anyway. These are:
- MS Works
- CyberLink Power Producer
- NTI Backup Now! 4
- NTI CD & DVD Maker 7
- Acer Arcade
- Acer eManager
- Acer Launch Manager
- Acer GridVista
(The CD/DVD writer would not write before I installed the NTI software)
Additional software successfully installed:
- MS Plus
- Adobe Acrobat Reader 7
- Apex SQL Edit
- Avast Anti Virus
- Crystal Reports 8.5
- DiskKeeper Professional Premier (Evaluation)
- Epson DX4200 - printer connected to x86 PC
- Google Earth
- Google Desktop
- VB6
- SQL Server 2k MSDE
- Microsoft Office 2003
- Norton Ghost 2003
- Norton Password Manager 2004
- Favourite Screen Savers
- Skype
- Giant Spam Inspector
- Windows Defender Beta
Software that has failed:
- Norton Internet Security 2006
- Norton Ghost 10
- Norton Partition Magic 8
- Zone Alarm x64 Beta - kept crashing, I have reported to ZA
- NOD32 - repeatedly froze on the final install screen
- eTrust 7.1 - wouldn't install.
- Adobe 7 Standard
- AVG - Installed fine, but I wasn't happy with it as it clashed with Giant
Anti Spam.
- Micrografx Picture Publisher 7 - 16bit installer. Sigh, I finally have to
retire my favourite graphcs program.
- Micrografx Picture Publisher 10 DCE - loaded and ran fine BUT suddenly
everything else started crashing. Removed it and after 2 reboots everything
was OK.
- PC Tools Spyware Doctor
- PC Tools Registry Mechanic
- PC Tools Anti Virus - I received the following response from PC Tools
"Although we do not support any 64 bit versions, some customers have no
problem installing in Windows XP 64."
- Tiny Firewall - Installed fine, but would not let IE32 bit run, kept
saying that it was trying to interact with Google Desktop, and this wasn't
allowed. Hmmm.. Not very useful. IE64 Bit was fine.
- Freecom DVB-T Decoder - no compatible drivers.
- Motorola Mobile Phone software doesn't work - although without the
software I can see the phone as anothe drive.
For the past 10 years I've been using Norton products through to Internet
Security 2006, and because they have not seen fit to develop a retail x64
product (or maybe they have just disabled the latest products as the older
Ghost & Password Manager work just fine - apart from NOT installing into
(x86) folders - I have then in an x86 - no brackets folder)
I have purchased Avast and am very happy with it, no shutdown problems that
others have experienced. I've also saved a lot of money for he future and
Symantec have lost a customer for the next 3 years. Any recommendations for
an alternative would be welcome.
The same goes with Adobe. I haven't decided which creator I'll buy, but it
will NOT be an Abobe product again for the forseeable future.
Once again thanks for the assistance that has been provided which has
allowed me a smooth and easy path into 64 bit computing. I will continue to
read this ng with interest and will try to contributr where I feel that I
can.
Apologies for the long post!

Windows Vista x64
Hello all,
I have been running XP x64 for a while now on one of my computers and
finally have everything working except my Brother label printer. The feeling
I'm getting though is a lot of manufacturers are holding off on developing
XP x64 drivers with Vista just around the corner. When Vista x64 gets
released I wonder if we will be left out in the cold again, while 32 bit
Vista users get flooded with a plethora of new drivers?

ODBC - Visual FoxPro Tables
In Windows XP, 32 bit version ODBC Driver for Visual FoxPro Tables is
vfpodbc.dll
and works OK.
Now i have a machine 64bit edition with WondowsXP 64bit English edition.
Unfortunly i do not know how to install this driver under WinXP 64bit
edition.
Mayby for 64bit version OS is another driver ODBC or Microsoft have not yet
ODBC driver

x64 vs Win 2003 Enteprrise, <= 32GB RAM
What are the advantages of an x64 OS vs. a Windows 2003 Enterprise server if
one has 32GB or less RAM?
(The Enterprise can address 32GB of RAM)
I think the biggie is not just the amount of RAM but the x64 box can address
the memory as a single 64-bit offset (from a base register) and doesn't need
32-bit workarounds like AWE.
I also read that x64 CPU hardware stops certain types of "buffer overrun"
attacks that are possible with 32-bit CPU?
Can you add any other items to this list.(or maybe correct my above
statements if they are wrong.)
TIA,
Bill Tag: No Flip3D in Feb CTP? Tag: 29376
