Okay, I had some real nasty spyware on my old XP install and nothing (I mean
nothing) would get rid of it. It finally ground me down to the point of a
clean install. I decided to buy Win XP x64 from Newegg.com and a few new
hard drives for the clean install. I formatted the 500 GB drive and then
installed it, only I couldn't get through the install. After I entered my
key and time zone, the computer rebooted (as it should). However, it then
came up into the program with such garbled graphics that nothing was visible.
I can tell from the garbled background that it went into a higher resolution,
but there isn't a clear letter, or any letter, on the screen; there is only
some blue background and EXTREME tearing. It never asked me to increase the
resolution, nor can I find a way to keep it from doing so. I have tried 3
times all with the same result. I wanted to call MS but they actually wanted
to charge me although it isn't due to incompetence. This is now nothing more
than a very expensive coaster and since it has been opened Newegg won't take
it back. I feel cheated. So I reinstalled Win XP 32 and it didn't have the
same problem. Maybe I should ask for the most updated production to be sent
to me (with updated drivers)? Yet, I have no one to ask, unless I want to
pay more for something that isn't working.

Here is my info:
DFI Lan UT DR motherboard
AMD FX-57
2 gigs (512 x4) Mushkin Redline 4000 dual channel
Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX (not in SLI mode for install)
Dell Ultrasharp 24in WideScreen Monitor (also tried Samsung 17 LCD monitor,
no help)
Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard (working fine)
Pioneer DVD-RW 109
2x500 GB WD drives
1 bad weekend

If it had installed, I would have went into safe mode or VGA mode, but how
can I do this when it hasn't finished installing? Remember, only 1 reboot
after I enter the key and time zone, then I can't get it to go further since
it is awaiting input from me, the end user.

Thank You,
Sam

This seems like a clear case of lack of research and you just jumped head
in. Why did you choose Windows XP Professional x64, you thought it would get
rid of your spyware? What it seems like you are currently experiencing is a
video card driver issue, I recommend you remove the video card and see if it
boots up, install the card and try installing the drivers. Make sure they
are the latest drivers too.

OK...I don't know what post Andre read when responding, but his usually
excellent suggestions just don't seem to pertain...

I would try it again with minimalist configuration, just one hard drive,
making sure you have the correct config., i.e. Master or cable select
(assuming these are PATA) and the video card, and don't connect anything
else...also, use only one DIMM at first...again, keep it minimal for
starters.

Allow x64 to format, and try it again. You should be able to get into VGA
mode, especially since x86 works OK...slowly start adding your other cards,
etc. back in.

Good luck, it "should" work.

Hello Sam,
Hmm, I would try building an unattended file with lower video driver
settings in it.
Plus you can answer all the questions in the unattended file to complete
setup.
Then you would be able to get into safe mode.
If you rename the unattended file to Winnt.sif and place it in the floppy
drive, you can boot to the cd and it will pick up the unattended file
automatically.
Thanks,

I too, am leaning towards the Graphics clue - if your board has integrated
graphics, did you disable it in your BIOS?

I do not believe the installation puts the graphics card into hi-res, at
most it will use 16bit 800x600 and that is 2D, but you could try pulling the
power-plug from the back of that card, it should force it into VGA mode for
the remainder of the installation, as long as you re-boot and re-connect it
before installing the drivers for it.

Remember to, that every piece of hardware that requires a driver MUST have a
64bit driver and few of those are on the Windows installation CD. (at least,
many aren't) And the system CD from the board manufacturer probably has none
at all.

So, identify all your hardware (what chips are running them) and
double-check your drivers before trying to install.

(And those HD's - what were they again?)
