Figure out bit architecture at runtime, windows 32/64 bit
Hi,
I am trying to port a 32 bit windows app to 64 bit, but I need to
figure out what OS I am on at runtime, to be able to setup certain
parameters. I am using Visual Basic as well as Visual C++. Is there a
function call that will help me figure this out ?
Thanks a lot,

Creating a batch file
The problem i have is that i am looking to set up the schedulers to run a
disk clean-up on my machines But the machines have multi partitions and i
only require the C Drive to be cleaned out. I have been told that to get the
scheduler to complete the task whilst away from the machines that I would
need to create a batch file and allow the scheduler to run the batch file.
if this is correct can anyone give me the text for the batch file that would
run the disk clean-up

x64 And DRM
I installed Windows XP x64 a few weeks ago. Overall I'm happy with it.
There are just a few things I don't have working yet. Mainly for lack of
64-bit drivers. One thing I haven't been able to figure out yet is digital
rights management. Does x64 support it? Adobe Reader won't allow me to
read pdf books that I previously purchased. I also can't play music that I
previously purchased in MusicMatch. Is there a solution? I have a dual
boot so I can use the files in 32-bit XP, but I'm hoping to get them working
in x64. Thanks.

dual boot for games and devices?
It's mounths now I have XP x64 on my PC and rarely use vmware
workstation or other PCs for things I can't do on my system.
Now I am going to buy news PCs for my children, that will be Athlon64
3500, 1GB, Asrock 939 A8X-M, FX 5500 da 256 mb. They will use them for
school, learning but gaming too, so what would you suggest to do? Stick
with XP x32 and eventually dual boot to an x64 just for special cases
or viceversa? They may frequently need to use bluetooth usb adapters or
cables for their phones, joysticks and similar things, but I do not
know which games would work better in an x32 environment.
My idea then is to stay with 32 bit, and install mail and applications
in this environment, and then switch to x64 with a second boot
partition with only the system installed for games, am I wrong?
Thank you for your collaboration :-) Tag: x64 Expiration Tag: 30240
x64 Setup Can't See My SATA Drive
I'm currently running 32-bit Windows XP on a SATA drive. I've set up on this
hard drive an instance of Windows Server 2003 64-bit as a dual-boot. (Same
partition, installed to \WIN2K3, I just had to rename the Program Files for
XP, install 64-bit Windows Server, rename Program Files again to Program
Files (32-bit), rename the "Program Files" key in the 64-bit registry to
point to the new path, and then revert the XP Program Files back to the
original name.) But I've since deleted that \WIN2K3 directory, as well as
the two Program Files directories ".. (32-bit)" and ".. (64-bit)". Now I
just boot to XP 32-bit. Everything works great for my 32-bit Windows
instance.
Since then I also got two more SATA hard drives and enabled nVidia RAID
(striping) for the two new drives. I had to install drivers within Windows
XP to see the new drives, but otherwise everything is fine there, now, too.
Now my problem is I want to install Windows XP 64-bit, same way as I
installed Windows 2003 64-bit. Unfortunately, however, Setup won't see my
original SATA drive. It sees all my USB drives (LOL!! like I want to install
Windows XP 64-bit on my 128MB USB flash drive) but not my SATA drive.
I tried hitting F6 to load drivers, and I had a CD-ROM in the drive that I
burned that has the nVidia nForce drivers for SATA (for WinXP 64-bit, and
with no subdirectory nesting), but Windows said that it found no floppy
drives. I don't have a floppy drive. *sigh*
I'm not sure where to go from here. I could try temporarily disabling the
RAID from the BIOS but I'm scared that if I disable it and then reenable it,
the array will be reset (as in, logically wipe out the data).
Here is my config as I type this:
IDE0: DVD-RW (XP boot disc)
IDE1: DVD/CD-RW (nVidia SATA driver disc)
SATA0: 300 GB HD (Windows XP 32-bit)
SATA1: 400 GB HD (nVidia RAID Disk 1)
SATA4: 400 GB HD (nVidia RAID Disk 2)
Any ideas? Much appreciated ...

vs2005 64-bit platformsdk issue
Hi All,
I am porting a wmi event provider dll from 32 to 64 bit. I have WindowsXP
64bit with Visual Studio 2005. I made a 64 bit configuration in my project.
Everything compiles but I get two unresolved external references in the
link. Both are contained within FrameDyn.lib/dll. I will focus only on one
since the fix is probably the same for both. As you can see from below, the
error is looking for an entry point named ?GetDMTF@WBEMTime@@QEBAPEA_WH@Z.
When I run dumpbin /EXPORTS on the two FrameDyn.lib files installed in the
VisualStudio path, each one has a GetDMTF@WBEMTime entry point but the
decorated name of both do not match what the linker is looking for (see the
names below). I looked around msdn to see if there is a new PlatformSDK for
the Windows 64bit but it appears that the includes, libs and dlls all
shipped with VS2005. If anyone can help me (other than to tell me that I
should recode the project in .net managed...which is not possible right
now), I would be forever grateful.

Group Policy Object Editing
I have installed admintools from Server 2003 SP1 (according to)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304718
I installed gpmc as well..
Followed copying directions from
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=895978
I didn't have gpedit.msc in c:\windows\syswow64 so I copied it there..
Now when I go to edit the MSC, I get the prompt of 64 or 32 bit
version. No matter which way I choose (even though I would guess I
need 32 bit) I get error:
Failed to open Group Policy Object. You may not have appropriate

I am getting closer and closer to getting this to work on my x64 box..
but still need this part :)

ActiveX component can't create object
Hello,
I have asked that question recently but received no helpful replies, so I
thought I'd try again:
The COM objects my company sells are written in C++/ATL. When installed on
Windows 2003 64-bit and used in the ASP environment, the following error is
generated by a Server.CreateObject statement:
Microsoft VBScript runtime error '800a01ad'
ActiveX component can't create object
Now, this error is pretty common in 32-bit Windows, and is easily fixed by
adjusting permissions on the COM object's DLL. But in 64-bit Windows this
trick does not work anymore. Something else obviously needs to be done. But
what???
Any help will be greatly appreciacted.

Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition and Veritas BackupEXEC
I've recently installed a x64 server for AD/DNS/DHCP/Print/File and
third-party software backupEXEC and database for my customer. When deciding
for the 32-bit or 64-bit server software I did some cheking if any of the 2
third-party software solutions would have any problems with the 64-bit
server OS. The database had been tested on a 64-bit solution in the 32-bit
enviroment so that was OK. For Veritas BackupEXEC my search came up with
that I needed to upgrade to version 10.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/D/A/A/DAA7245D-E01D-46A4-AB70-3A95ED3F6934/64veritas.doc
http://www.veritas.com/news/press/PressReleaseDetail.jhtml?NewsId=64402
Now, when I'm about to install the backup software, they tell me that there
is only the backupExec agent that will run on the server, not the backupExec
software itself.
What do I do? This is the only server in the network. Do I downgrade from
x64 Edition to 32-bit? I do have Windows Server 2003 Standard installation
media, but will the license key for x64 be OK? Is it possible to re-install
and downgrade keeping the existing setup? Is there other backup software
that support 64-bit?
Only localfiles on the server and stop/start of the database service (done
by running .bat files) will be needed.

No 64-bit Vista?
Found this paragraph in a CNN.com story about the delayed release of Vista
for consumers.
"Three will be aimed at consumers, two at business users, and a
stripped-down version for emerging markets. Unlike the current Windows XP,
there will be no versions designed specifically for advanced 64-bit
computing, multimedia computers or Tablet PCs."
Is CNN simply misinformed? What does it mean to say there will be no version
for 64-bit computing?

Vista Consumer release January, 2007
SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. said on Tuesday it plans to delay the
consumer launch of its much-anticipated Windows Vista operating system to
January 2007 from its earlier target of the second half of 2006, sending its
shares down nearly 3 percent.
Microsoft plans to launch a product for corporate customers in November and
then roll out Windows Vista for consumers after the holiday shopping season,
Jim Allchin, co-president of the company's Platforms & Services Division,
said on a conference call.
<snip>
Microsoft said Vista is delayed because it wants to improve overall quality,
particularly in security, and that PC makers didn't want the operating
system introduced in the middle of holiday sales, because a new version
would create instability in the market. ...

installing x64 on a gigabyte nforce4 motherboard
Hi all
I've tried to install x64 onto a gigabyte nforce sli motherboard and
and the install works ok once I load the latest sata raid drivers from
a floppy. the issue is that on the next reboot the raid array that I
have set up for the C drive seems to be split in the OS and you can see
a C and D drive both with the windows directory on them. Then after the
install has finished and I've had the opportunity to use the OS for a
while I try to reboot it and I get the error that the NTLDR is missing.
I'm using the latest drivers from the gigabyte and NVidia websites and
have followed their instructions but it seems not matter what I do the
raise set for the c drive always gets split even though at the bios
level it says that there is still a valid raid set there. Anyone seen
this or similar before and managed to get a booting system at the end
of the day? This is the Gigabyte GA k*NProSli board with a AMD 64

Windows 64 bit porting - AMD vs. Intel
Hi,
Following a thread at OSR's newsgroup
(http://www.osronline.com/showthread.cfm?link=88874), I will be happy to
know your opinions for the following issue:
Given all the above discussion (link above) , it seems I should
focus on considering porting to x64 (AMD64/EM64T). To
get a better understanding of the how/which answers, I
would appreciate it if you guys can share any market
projections/insights you have in regards to the
penetration of these systems in 2006 and 2007.
Furthermore, it would be interesting to understand the
x64 support for Vista. I mean, would all x64 systems
be installed with a 64bit OS, or do you guys think
that, as today, most x64 systems will still be shipped
with 32 bit OS.
Do you have any insights in regards to the
configuration of x64 systems by major OEMs (HP, Dell,
etc.) and which OS are they going to put on the
system?

anywhere i could possibly imagine.Unfortunately,i came out empty.
I own a couple of operating systems which are genuine. An XP Pro

an x64.Both are english.I Haven't installed them yet to my computers. My
Question is this:
Can I register them both in my name, through microsoft activation?
I'm asking because i've heard that if you register an XP(32-Bit) and
after
that an x64 to the same name, the registration of the XP 32-Bit
operating
system is automatically cancelled!!!!!!!
Is this true?????

Mcafee Enterprise 8.0i; but still it could not work. Could it have been
because of a firewall problem as I use the built in firewall of Windows?
I formatted and reinstalled everything on the root partition. Luckily the
virus did not infect the other partitions.
What could have caused this problem and how can I stop it from happening
again!

How to find the datatype of a particular variable...
Dear pals,
I am developing an win32 console application, I need to find the data type
of particular variable dynamically. Is it possible?
Say for eg,
declaring 'a' as integer, how can I find the data type of variable 'a'
dynamically.
Awaiting for your ideas.
note: please ignore this, if it is not a relevant group.

Looking for samples, links, etc. for Activex 64
I googled for hours searching for whether is it even possible to create
64-bit activex (.ocx) for IE64. Many articles I found on the net
(including postings on this board) say that "...most folks have yet to
re-write their 32-bit activex for IE64" which led me to believe that
it's possible to do so and there is an activex control out there
written for IE64. Can anyone point me to some sort of tutorial or demo
of such control ?
I found this tutorial
http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/Code/2003/March/ActiveXInNet.asp . I
haven't tried to recompile this one for IE64 which seems it is
possible. However, when I ran this on IE32, no control got downloaded
to Downloaded Program Files folder or displayed on "manage add-on"
window. This is not what I'm looking for.
thanks.

Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 localised into spanish
As far as I know, x64 versions of Windows Server are not localised into any
language but english. We need to install the english version and then install
the right Multilingual User Interface Pack on top of the english
installation. Is this also correct for R2?
I saw some days ago (in http://licensing.microsoft.com , products download
area, selecting the product Windows Server Standard) that the Spanish
localised version of R2 was already available, but only 32bits version!
However, in our case (we have just bought a dual Xeon server) we would like
to install R2 x64 but localised into spanish.
What would be the downloads that we need to do and the steps to follow in
order to achieve this?
Note: We have VLKs (among others) for:
Win Server 2003 R2 x32 Ed.
Win Server 2003 R2 x64 Ed. <-- We'd like to use this one
Windows Server 2003
Windows Server 2003, x64 Ed.
To start with, I supposed that we would need the following download:
* Windows Svr Std 2003 R2 32-bit/x64 English Disk Kit MVL MVLS Only ISO CD
and then install this one:
* Windows Svr Std 2003 w/SP1 32-bit/x64 English/MultiLang Disk Kit MVL CD
However, since the latter download is not explicitly for R2, all the new
management functions, programs, help files, etc, included in R2 were not
translated into spanish, and remained in the original english.
Is there any (or there will be any) MUI for R2 x64? By now, a have a server
with a mixture of english/spanish. The basic behaviour of Win2003 Std w/SP1
is localised, but the new things included with R2 are in inglish.
Might I need to install the MUI ##before## the second CD of R2? Honestly, I
don't think that would make any difference.
Regards and thanks in advance. Tag: x64 Expiration Tag: 29901
I installed Win x64 on Dec. 21/05 and it's still running as my alternate
