    - Hard drive is Disk 0 CHANGES to hard drive is Disk 1??? And still works!!! Running Windows XP Pro 64-bit edition. I notice that my primary hard drive is Disk 0. If I add another hard disk to the system, the primary hard drive becomes Disk 1! And still works!!! I thought the hard and fast rule was that disk 0 ALWAYS stays disk 0 REGARDLESS of whether or not an additional hard drive gets installed.     - Is XP 64 safe? Will it make me happy I want to use more ram (8 gig) so I plan to switch to XP 64 bit, if I do, what will I break? I know I can't "upgrade" and that I have to re- install the OS. Can I use the same applications, the same anti-virus? Am I going to have device driver issues like with Vista? I noticed a couple of posts about RAID issues; I *will* need RAID on this box. Is XP64 still supported by most Mobo mfrs? Will Visual Studio work the same? What will I give up? I loved Windows 2000 server but I couldn't find anti-virus and other server level software at a reasonable cost. So I switched to XP, but XP can't handle the big ram mobo's. Windows 2008 sounds great for Virtual PC's but I think the server utility app pricing (firewalls and anti-virus etc) will still be out of my price range.     - Problem with RAID/Install I am having a problem installing XP64 on a RAID 5 setup. I have: XP64 (June 2006) Intel DX38BT BIOS = 1521 (latest) Intel RAID driver = 7.8.0.1012 (latest, XP64 version) Intel QX9650 Corsair DDR3 RAM - 2 x 2GB Western Digital SATA-II 7200RPM 160GB x 4 In a non-RAID setup XP64 installs and runs perfectly. When I switch to RAID5 via CMOS settings and use the F6 driver installation method the installation fails. I have the F6 drivers on floppy. F6-ing at the beginning of setup correctly asks for drivers at the appropriate time. Selecting ICH9 (the appropriate disk hardware on the board) is accepted at the time of driver loading, but when it gets to the "Press enter to install Windows" screen pressing enter results in a "No hard drives were found on your system" error. In looking at the INF and txtsetup.oem files on the floppy I found that the ICH9 entries pointed to device 2922: %PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2922&CC_0106.DeviceDesc% = iaStor_Inst, PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2922&CC_0106 But my computer (when running non-RAID) reports the devices as 2920 and 2926. I assumed this was causing the problem (and wondered why devices 2920 and 2926 were not included in the DX38BT driver I downloaded) and added the appropriate entries hoping that this would allow windows setup to find the drives. No change in behavior. I've considered trying to slipstream the drivers onto a new CD, but couldn't see any reason why the F6 method was failing that slipstreaming might help.     - Google Earth Hi I'm buying a new machine soon which will have Vista Home Premium, 64 bit. One of my favourite programmes is Google Earth, and it's own website says it doesn't work with 64 bit systems (although some users seem to have found workarounds).     - Recently re-installed Vista x64 - now doesn't shut down correctly I recently (Thursday) re-installed Vista x64 because I experienced major issues which turned out to be the RAID drivers on the Gigabyte controller on my board. Switching them to to the Intel controller instantly solved all the problems I had experienced previously. Over the past few days, every time I booted it would tell there are new updates - and yesterday it also downloaded and installed SP1. Every since then, when I shut down I briefly get an error message flash up onto the screen right at the end and then Vista will reboot instead of shutting the machine off. During this reboot, it now takes me to a screen where I have to select the 'Boot Windows normally' before the machine takes me to the Windows login screen. Anybody have any clues about this one??     - Memory use at startup Hi All, I am using Win XP x64. When I startup my computer, the memory (I have 768M) drops down to about 300M and then below 150M, sometimes falling below 40M. But every once in a blue moon, the memory starts at above 500M and falls to around 350M. Any ideas on how I can get it to do this all the time, instead of infrequently? Guess what.....it takes a whopping 3 mins & 20 secs to boot timing from when the desktop first appears. I wish I had did that before installing SP1.     - MS 2008 Product Roll-out Just attended the Microsoft "Heroes Happen here" 2008 product-line roll-out in Seattle. Developer Track. It was worthwhile simply on the basis of the free software I received: 1. Enterprise Server 2008, 32-bit and 64-bit versions - 1-year trial license 2. SQL Server 2008 Standard w/voucher for upgrade to Release - retail license 3. Visual Studio 2008 Standard - retail license 4. Vista Ultimate 32-bit w/SP1 - retail license 5. 90 day One-care license 6. Windows Mobile Developer Resource Kit - trial license (don't know how long, haven't opened; probably 1-year) I have never been a a fan of Multiple Sclerosis, but I have to admit, if these 2008 versions live up to the hype, they are a big step forward for MS. Several big-outfit partners testified to some amazing productivity gains using Visual Studio. There are some very ambitious per-project productivity and profiling tools built right in. 1-year development cycles slashed to 90 days, etc. Not a single crash during the code demonstrations. 2008 Server looks *very* nice. Open Source has obviously scared-the-hell out of them. Among other things, MS appears to have *really* taken virtualization to heart.     - Media Center Problems. Please help... I hate Media Center...Its a new sony desktop, and everytime I start media center I get SYS stopped responding. I hope someone can tell me how to fix this, without having to call Sony. Like an update or something from the windows site would be great. Also, It does not record shows that I have set to record for some reason. I know its not that there's not enough space on the hard drive. Its a 500 GB hard drive and I have two. And sometimes it will only record 5 mins of the show or all of the show. Sometimes it get more than 5 mins but not the whole show. I'm thinking it has to be vista, and/or a program conflict. I have spy sweeper, and nothing else is running during the time it records. FYI - I have an external ATI Wonder Cable Tuner. And I have an antenna hooked up to that to get my tv shows. Also I have a wii which I cannot hook up to that because where the ports are too hook it up, the plastic is in the way. So even though it should fit, it does not.     - Drive letters in a XP/ XP64 dual boot? I installed XP Pro x64 in a dual with XP Pro x32 on my workstation last night. The install went pretty well, with the installer having all the drivers it needed to get a usable system (the printer being the one exception). Thanks again to every one who responded to my previous posts about this. There is one thing though that I have a question about. XP64 was installed on a second hard drive that was assigned the drive letter "D:" during the install (as expected). Despite the "D:" designation, I thought when booted up it would be assigned "C:" (and HD1, where XP32 is installed, would be given some other letter). At least I believe that's how it works with a Vista dual boot (based on what I've read). Is this not the case with XP64 also? I ask because when installing software most assume you're on"C:" and suggest default install folders based on that. Since I expect I'll be using XP64 95% of the time, I'd rather it have "C:" for the convenience. But it's definitely not worth reinstalling the OS or going through other major operations to get this.     - Permissions Nightmares I've had some issues with Microsoft software (Office 2007, Visual Basic Studio Express) installations on Vista 64. The install shows a successful completion, but it seems that a number of registry keys are being written with no permissions assigned to them. Once written in this way, the keys cannot be viewed or modified by any account on my system, to include the administrator account. The result for Office 2007 is that the Microsoft installer is invoked each time I start one of the Office applications, followed by the Office Configuration dialogue box. It takes as much as 5 minutes for any Office app to start up. In Visual Basic Studio Express, it notifies me that I don't have the required registry access to begin a new project. In the past, I used SubInACL to force permissions onto some keys, and saw at least a little success from it. However, SubInACL no longer seems to work in Vista 64 (on my system, at least). It shows that it has changed permissions, but makes no actual adjustment to any key's permisssions. I thought Service Pack 1 might address some of these issues the Microsoft Installer has with writing keys with no permissions assigned, but no luck.... I was really hoping Microsoft would fix this issue. So, until they get around to it, does anyone know of a fix? Is there a replacement for SubInACL that plays nice with Vista 64? In the past, I have tried the SubInACL fix that it floating around a few forums on the internet. It instructs the user to change ALL registry keys to full access for Administrators and Systems.     - xp 64 vs vista 64? I know this is a topic that's been beaten to death, and I've read a lot of the discussions comparing these two. What's interesting (and confusing) is the lack of consensus - some like xp64 better (because it's faster and uses less resources) and others prefer vista (almost as fast, greater driver availability, and future support). I was at first leaning towards xp64, but am now rethinking this (due mainly to future support issues - if I buy a new printer or camera, it will more likely have Vista 64 drivers available). But there are a couple of things I'm still not clear on: 1. Will Vista 64 run older 32-bit software, like MS Office XP and MS Project 2002 (or any other XP software for that matter)? I'd like to run these, and I'm pretty sure XP64 can (via WOW) - but I'm not so sure about Vista. I've read conflicting reports on that. 2. My computer has dual processors with dual-core cpus (4 cores in all). I've read that xp64 is better at load balancing among multiple cores (since it uses the Windows 2003 server kernel) compared to Vista. Does anyone know if that is true? Given that multi-core cpus are now mainstream, I'd be surprised if MS hadn't paid attention to this in the design of Vista. 3. Is XP64 actually available for install on an existing PC? I ask because the only copies I've been able to find for sale are the "systems builder" version. Since I'll be replacing an existing OS (Linux) and a computer I purchased two years ago, I'm not sure I qualify (at least per the letter of the licensing agreement). Any thoughts on this?     - Strange Printer Problems Hello, I have a server running server 2003 (x64). It is a DC (Back up) and a print server among other things. When certain users print to a certain printer (HP Laser Jet 4200), the program requesting the print job hangs. Then when the user requests the properties sheet, nothing will happen. These users can print to other printers hosted on that machine, and other users can print the this 4200. I am currently attributing the problem to RPC errors that have been happening (End point mapper) on my DC and when I add clients to the domain.     - 32/64 Bit Dual Boot Login Woes I have a system that we are trying to dual boot from Windows XP Professional 32 bit on C: and Windows XP Professional 64-bit on S:. This machine authenticates to a domain with a Windows 2003 R2 Server as the DC. Everything seems to go according to plan until joining the domain. The first time the 64 Bit OS boots, you can login and join the domain... but shortly afterward when going back to login to the 32 Bit we find that the workstation can no longer connect to the domain or login locally (even though the 64 bit os can). The only way around this is to log in locally as the administrator, remove the computer from the domain and rejoin it... but then once this is done the reverse happens and we can no longer log into the 64 Bit OS. I thought that this was an account SID issue, so we created two accounts 1 for 32bit and one for 64 bit, but still no beans. I have heard that the computer also needs to be named differently on the two os's. Is this true? When I try to backup elements that are not the file system in I receive this error: V-79-57344-34110 - AOFO: Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). VSS Snapshot error. Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) cannot communicate with the writers.     - Vista 64 more than 2gb Ram issues My new system has a ASUS M2N3 SLI Deluxe Mobo and I wanted to use 4gb of ram. I have installed vista 64 home with 2gb of ram, but when I add the next stick of ram I always get the BSOD. I have install sp1, but have not been success full in getting the pc to run on more that 2gb. The bios reconizes all 4gb, but not long after windows starts up it never fails.... I have Vista Home Premium In the Administrative tools of the start menu it has Reliability and Performance monitor, in there it has resource overview.     - Installing XP Pro x64 in a dual boot/vm with XP Pro x32? My workstation (HP xw9300 with dual Opteron 280 cpus) is currently set up in a dual boot between Windows XP Pro (x32) and Linux (where each OS is on its own hard drive). For various reasons I've decided to drop Linux and would like to replace it with Windows XP Pro x64. Ideally, I would like to make XP Pro x64 my primary OS, but have the ability to access my older XP Pro x32 installation, when needed, via a virtual machine like VMware or VirtualPC. That's what I've been doing from Linux, and it's work pretty well for that occasional need. My question is, what's the best way to get from my current setup to where I'd like to be? Also, my workstation has fairly standard hardware (Seagate SATA hard drives, DVD R/RW, Nvidia Quadro FX1400 video card) - will the Windows x64 install disk have all the required drivers it needs, or do I need to get these in place first? When I start my Norton anti virus, or any of my Video games a Vista error appears and says that I need to close my programs to conserve memory, yet I have 400GB of memory left and 2GB of RAM, an 8800GTX Ultra and a dual core CPU at 3.00GHZ or so. With both a Windows and Mac machine felled, only the Linux box remained standing following the three-day competition. Shane Macaulay, who played a hand bringing down a Mac during last year's Pwn2Own contest, defeated the Vista machine using a previously unknown vulnerability in Adobe Flash. On final day of the CanSecWest conference in Vancouver, Macaulay spent the better part of four hours trying to get the exploit to work. (The delay prompted one spectator to playfully dub the difficulty "hacktile dysfunction.") A MacBook Pro running a fully patched version of Leopard was the first to drop out during day two of the race, when researchers from Independent Security Evaluators demonstrated a previously unknown vulnerability in Apple's Safari browser. With brand new boxes running both Ubuntu and Vista remaining, Macaulay spent day three switching back and forth between the two machines, trying to get his Flash exploit to execute properly. He was assisted by Alex Sotirov, a security researcher at VMware. Initially thwarting Macaulay's efforts was the recently released Service Pack 1 for Vista, which he had neglected to install when testing the Flash exploit in the days leading up to the contest. Per the contest rules, each target machine had to be fully patched, and when the researcher first ran the code during the competition, new page protections added by Microsoft's security team prevented the exploit from properly executing. "They had done some stuff in Vista to prohibit this form of attack from being successful on third party software," Macaulay said minutes after he finally commandeered the Fujitsu U810 laptop. "We had to do some porting to get around that issue." Macaulay and Sotirov fashioned some javascript to circumvent the new measure, a feat that effectively allows them "to render that protection ineffective," Macaulay said. It also allows them to pocket a $5,000 bounty from Tipping Point's Zero Day Initiative and keep the pricey Fujitsu laptop. Macaulay said he would probably sell the machine, which he and Sotirov autographed with a black Sharpie pen, on eBay. Under contest rules, qualifying exploits on day one had to target default installations of the operating system itself and winners were allowed to walk away with the hacked box and a $20,000 bounty. Contest organizers gradually expanded the eligible attack surface on days two and three by allowing an vulnerabilities in an increasing number of third party applications. The bounty dropped to $10,000 on day 2 and $5,000 on day three. No one bothered competing on day one. Plenty of commentators have made hay of the MacBook Pro being the first to exit the race, and Linux zealots are sure to conclude the contest results prove the superiority of that platform. Maybe. But that's not how it looks to Macaulay, who says with a few hours of tweaking, his exploit will also work on OS X and Linux. The better take-away is that exploits like these are a fact of life for everyone no matter what kind of machine they choose (are you listening, Mac Guy?). Another lesson: just as quickly as Microsoft or any other developer adds new measures like page protection to their code base, hackers, ethical and otherwise, are find ways to work around them. "Nobody can do anything about it, because you're always going to be installing something" that will bypass security, Macaulay, who wore torn blue jeans and a Puma jogging jacket, said with a shrug.     - Windows shortcuts, compuuter un-useable Starting last night, my keyboard keys started going crazy. Some stopped working, most others now point to a shortcut rather than a key. For example, if I type "F" the computer minimizes all windows. Maybe "C" brings up the Vista search box. I don't know what to do or how to fix it, it's driving me insane.     - Quad core benching like a dual The last benchmark I ran was about a third of the normal level as far as performance. I checked the task manager and all for cores ARE being utilized. The first thought was faulty benchmark results and/or software. The thing that really concerned me was while looking at the task manager performance results all four cores spiked a 100%.
