    - Converting 64 bit to 32 bit I recently bought and installed the OEM versioin of Vista 64 bit, but discovered that I really should have purchased the 32 bit. is there any way to disable the 64 bit and convert it to 32 bit, either through the program itself, or by contacting Microsoft and have them do something, such as sending a patch or some other software reprogramming that they might be able to do if I send them my licensing information, etc. Rick Tag: ENJOYING WEBSITES at fit4money@gmx.net Tag: 51932

    - 64 bit versus 32 bit RAM Two questions: 1)I have Vista 64 bit, I wanted to see if it could be converted or reloaded to the 32 bit with the OEM version I have, but from prior questions it seems that there is no way to convert the 64 bit versio to the 32 bit version, unless somebody knows a way. 2) If I do reinstall and go with the 32 bit versioin, I have heard there is problems with that version supporting more than 2 GB of RAM, I now have 4 GB of DDR2 in my system.     - Uninstall problems I cannot delete three, count them, three Nero 7 essentials entries from my add/remove programs. I have deleted all of the registry entries, to my knowledge, have contacted Nero tech support, but no luck. The entries are there without "change" or "remove" buttons. Please help.     - Missing User Profile! I tried to log in and I'm getting a message that the User Profile can not be loaded. No one has used my computer since I last shut it down. I'm using Vista 64 and I have 2 profiles, my main admin profile and my sons profile that is under parental control. My main profile is not loading and when I try to do any sort of admin function under my son's profile it asked for my password to get my admin rights, well that doesn't work. I can log into Vista 32 I have installed as a dual boot on this computer so I have some access but still limited. I'm looking for any ideas as to how I can resolve this issue. Thanks.     - I can't delete a folder on my desktop I created a folder on my desktop, and when I went to rename it, I pressed "255" while holding the ALT key. Doing this makes the name blank. However, when I try to delete the folder, it doesn't let me. I've tried deleting it as an Administrator, and still have had no luck. I am running Windows 64bit Home Premium.     - Printer Server (64bit OS and 32bit Clients) We have a new Windows 2003 Server (x64) that we want to use as a print server. When loading the printer drivers on the servers, it requires a 64-bit version. When a 32-bit client connects to the printer share it says it's the wrong version.     - Running Vista 64 bit in 32 bit mode I recently purchased Vista 64 bit, when in retrospect I should have purchased th 32 bit version. I am now encoutering problems (obviously) running most of my programs, as they are not compatible with the 64 bit version. Is there any way to run the 64 bit version in a 32 bit mode, or is there any remedy to this problem? I was thinking that if all else fails I would have to go out and buy the 32 bit version, and reinstall it over the 64 bit version...agian, will that work if I do that, or am I going to have to reformat the disk, and start all over from scratch, which I hoping not to do, both from the perspective of cost and time.     - Installing windows 2003 64 bits standard server without R2 Hello I am trying to install a windows server 64 bits standard server. I have serial number for both with and without R2. I don't want to install R2 when I install the server. Media kit that I have got has two CDs and it installs R2 when I use both CD. My question is, how can I not install r2 using my media kit or where can I get windows 2003 64 bits standard server with or without SP1 or SP2 (if without service packs, I can download and install service packs) Or can I still get media kits without R2 in it from market?     - Access SQL Server 2005 Express in ASP I;'ve just upgraded to Vista 64bit and installed SQL Express. BUT I can't connect to SQL in an ASP page. if i do an odbc connection its fine.can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong. i got it to a point 5 minutes ago, where it got past the connection but errored on creating a recordset.     - Getting rid of an old bootable partition... Hi all, I used to have XP 32-bit on my C: drive. Shortly after XP 64-bit came out, I installed in on D: and started dual-booting. It didn't take long after I've completed my migration that I started using x64 exclusively. My system's gone through a few hardware changes since then, but I've never bothered to reboot in XP 32-bit to install drivers and such. A while ago I did try to boot into XP 32-bit (can't remember why I would do such a foolish thing) ;-) but I found out at that time that my 32-bit installation was corrupted. I can't say I cared enough about it to try to fix it or even figure out why it wasn't functional anymore. In fact I'd prefer to have it gone completely. Both partitions (C: and D:) are 30GB in size, on the same physical hard drive (250GB SATA). The C: partition (obviously in such a setup) contains the boot.ini file. Given that I have no need for XP 32-bit, and my D: partition could use the space, I thought I could get rid of the C: partition entirely. So I'm asking for advice on exactly how I could proceed, given that XP's disk manager doesn't really have the smarts to do such a thing. At a minimum I would expect I would have to copy the boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntldr files from C: to D: before I blow away the C: partition (and resize D: to take up that free space)...maybe edit the boot.ini so any reference to ...rdisk(0)partition(2) becomes rdisk(0)partition(1)...but then I'm pretty sure I'll run into further problems because C: drive is currently a primary partition, while D: (and E:, F:, G:, and a couple more) are all logical partitions grouped within one extended partition. I'm not looking to change XP x64's drive letter assignment from D: back to C:...in fact if it does that, that'll screw up *all* references pretty good. I just want the C: partition to go away. I know that at least one of these steps isn't supported by Disk Manager itself (resizing my D: partition), so I'm looking for a good tool (Partition Magic, or something from Acronis?) that is *known* to be able to do these sort of changes intelligently and won't leave me with a system that won't boot...     - Restart bypassing Boot screen Here's a new one: This just started happening. When I restart in Vista 64 the restart process by passes the OS boot choices screen & goes directly to vista logon screen.(I have a duel boot system).LOL If I choose shutdown,then boot it goes to the OS boot choices screen. If I boot to winxp 64 then re-start it also by passes the OS boot choice screen & goes directly to the Vista Logon screen. LOL. I have to shut-down then boot to get the OS boot screen.     - $3,000 Paper Weight So I had this Really nice gaming computer built. Its running this really great OS called Vista 64. (WTFE) Its causing a yellow line to run down my screen on the right side. Its not turning my computer off when i tell it to. Its not even being recognized as a 64bit OS when it comes to driver installs to fix the SLI issue im having with my 8800GTX's. Windows updates are not even installing because of "bad Installs" or so Vista tells me. Pure Edge Don't work. Thank god I'm a non-commissioned officer and have to use pure edge to counsel my fire team monthly. But on the good news Its recognizing my 4 gigs of ram. How can I fix these issues besides loading my .45 and putting it out of its misery and microwaving the Vista CD? Nvida tells me im trying to install a 64bit program on a 32bit OS, then tells me im trying to install a 32bit program on a 64bit OS.......along with the number of issues I'm having how can i fix this seriously?     - Sad but true, Another X64 tale. Like many other before me, I decided it was time to get a 64 bit system. I got a combo from the "Geeks" which I placed in an old enclosure with a new power supply. The combo wouldn't load winxp 32, win 98 or anything else. It wouldn't even boot a hard drive with win xp on it. Good thing MS offered a trial 64 bit XP. I downloaded it, burned it, loaded it and "poof"! I have a 64 bit operating system. The video is on the motherboard and the LED mouse works fine as does the ethernet adapter (onboard as well). As a matter of fact, as an internet browser it's just great, but not noticebly better than my old socket A 1 gig duron set up. It's just wonderful! Everything works! (unless you want to add a peripheral like a printer, a network card, a video capture card, a bluetooth adapter, a serial port adapter; actually 100% of the devices I tried to install didn't load.) I was going to try to load some regular software, but whats the point? I can't print, copy, scan, send or retrieve anything unless it goes through my old stand-by computer anyway, and even then, it didn't like the way I set up the LAN. But I threatened to take away 1 gig of memory and it finally let itself be recognized by the network. I spent one day trying to get drivers that would work with any device. Even the Vista 64 bit drivers wouldn't work. It was like giving myself a wedgie, only faster! So, I thought I would just buy device that would work with win 64. Try that! The amount of time I have spent looking at specs (and not finding x64) is going against the faster speed and reliability of the OS. (which is a misnomer, sure it's reliable and stable, it doesn't DO anything.) I will be too old to see the screen and probably won't care when I escape from the nursing home to get the first compatible usb device! The funny thing is that when you look at the new systems for sale, most of them are 64 bit. Probably Vista though, but way too slow. Does Linux have a 64 bit OS? Plus vanishing bin Hi all, ive not long purchased the OEM version of Vista 64 Basic and i was wondering if my default theme is bugged, its currently on Graphite with the Intensity on max and ive noticed that if a window isnt maximized the border is all shiny, yet if i then maximize the window (internet explorerer included) that instead of bieng shiny its a dark black. To me it seems like a bug due to the fact it isnt reflective at all... is it meant to be intended this way or does it need fixing? Also sometimes after ive deleted an item from the recycle bin the bin icon vanishes until i refresh the desktop.. do Microsoft know of this problem?     - FTP in Windows 2003R2 rejects user I have posted a question about publishing websites using VS2005 and it is yet to be responded to, so I decided to try and setup the FTP option. The problem with FTP is that it sets up without issues but will reject the user due to bad username or password. When the user tries to cinnect using FTP, IIS shows that the user is connected yet the user gets rejected. I have even tried allowing the anonymous user and the same thing happens.     - Running XP Pro 32 Edition w/out errors/problems on a 64bit chipset Can Windows XP Pro 32 Edition run without errors/problems on a 64bit chipset? We purchased a new Dell dual processor xeon machine. The processors are Intel Xeon 5150 running at 2.66. Originally, we ordered the machine configured with for Windows Pro x64 Edition. Unfortunatly, some of our software and hardware would not run on Windows Pro x64 Edition. Dell sent us a CD to install Windows Pro 32bit edition. This computer has been plagued with problems and slow response to the most basic things like draging the mouse and opening dialog boxes. Additionally, if we open the properties for My Computer Windows only sees 3 GBs of 4 GBs of the ram installed on this machine. The bios does see 4 GBs of ram. We finally asked Dell to send out a tech to take a look at the machine. The tech said that our problems probably are due to the fact that we are trying to run Windows Pro 32 bit Edition on a 64 bit chipset.     - Very misleading, unethical I recently went on a mission to buy the best PC available for under $1,000.00 US... I did some homework prior to making what I thought was a good purchase. My objectives were simple. I wanted a 64-bit processor and a 64-bit operating system. I searched and searched and finally found the m8124n at Circuit City. This HP Media Center PC came with the 32-bit edition of Windows Vista Ultimate. So, I made the purchase and arrived home expecting to find 64-bit software included in the box.     - Windows is not letting me log on I have been trying to move my boot partition off of my noisy hard drive onto a new quiet hard drive. I first tried copying and pasting my whole C: drive to my brand new SATA hard drive. after rebooting the system it had a hard time rebooting again. I had to go into bios and reset the right boot priority. it would not boot to the new SATA hard drive because i did not do it properly with the proper program. I did not want to delete what was on it to properly do it. so i wanted to use a smaller PATA HDD and used the Seagate program that came with the computer. I used a process that would take the boot off of the old drive and put it onto the transfering drive. well 75% through the process while it was to "copying" the information the computer went into screen saver mode while i was away. when i came back to check it the computer was frozen up but the light on the front was to blinking as though it were still working. i tried ctr+alt+del many times on it would not unfreeze. so i held my power button to shut it down. when i tried to reboot my system it gets to the windows logo and what would normally be the screen that would let me click on a profile and have it load up is now a log on to windows, window that has my name instead of my profile filled into a box requesting a password i do not have set. when i try to log in using no password it tells me that it's logging out and either freezes or goes back to the log on screen. it wont let me into my computer. i've tried safe mode and i get the same thing. Please help i do not want to reinstall windows again for the 5th time or so, and loose everything. again! note: I have many other xp computers in my house and the Vista basic laptop i am using. -- when my computer fails all hell breaks loose.     - Nero 8.1.1.0 is out wNero 8 is out. http://www.nero.com/eng/nero8-introduction.html Surprisingly the download is almost the same size - around 180 megs - as the last Nero 7. Downloaded the trial and installed it in a Virtual Machine running XP x86 SP2. No new apps found, no problems detected. Went back to Vista x64, made a system restore point, uninstalled Nero 7 and gave Nero 8 trial a shot. Rebooted as required. Nero SmartStart would not start (error). Other Nero apps would start but filled the event viewer with Microsoft.VC80.CRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",version="8.0.50727.762" errors and something about WinSxs that I could not work out. I then moved all of the websites over to the new server and managed to get them all working properly. My problem is that I wish to update a few sites and I can't connect with VS2005. It seems that Microsoft has discontinued the Frontpage extensions for this version of the OS and I am ok with that, but how can I get VS2005 to connect to this server to make changes to the sites?     - Sorry, folks! Ahh, a fit of idiocy lost me the complete Win2K installation - including all the news and e-mail. Thus, I may forget to respond to posts I'd ticked off as 'watch' items. Nothing really catastrophic beyond that, (Not the RAID!) but a major pain non-the-less. And anyhow, 'sleeping is for amateurs'. Nights, at least. I was removing one of the dual-boot systems and just before copying the essentials - I just re-booted. I didn't want to do that at all. Thinking back it almost seems as if it did it on it's own. Naturally, it wasn't booting, and during the attempted rescue it reported my NTFS partitions as FAT - I honestly didn't know how to deal with that in a hurry! I honestly still don't think I would ever have gotten out of that one, smiling. Well, the bottom line is that win2k is out (for the moment) and the news and e-mail is back up again elsewhere, now.
