Are we ever gonna see reasonable driver support for x64, or are the
manufacturers holding out for Vista...... This lact of support will continue
to discourage adoption of 64bit and dual core processors.

Dual core processors don't depend on an x64 OS.

Yes, we will continue to see improvements. It won't be all at once, and
you'll probably never see drivers for older hardware and software. But
you're already seeing improvements in the driver support. This has nothing
to do with Vista, and everything to do with an entirely new architecture.

Manufacturers are slowly releasing 64 bit drivers for the Win XP Pro 64 bit
os. These are only related to current hardware. An example is Gigabyte
manufacturer who're mainly in beta. The beta drivers are for newer hardware
of the type you'd purchase to fill your new computer case, such as mobo,
pci-e x16 video, raid controllers and Lan etc.

The little extra's like modems, sound etc are being much slower to appear.

I reached full driver support 2 weeks ago - finally got a driver for my
Bluetooth AP.
But granted support are missing for legacy devices and especially printers
and scanners. HP says they will release drivers this fall, while Canon have
only released a driver for their latest PIXMA, and nothing more... Canon have
a history in doing this, trying to force us to buy a new printer
