Control Panel Shortcuts

Hi,

I have Windows XP Pro X64, SATA. I have an all-in-one printer/fax/scanner.
In order to access the scanner, I have to go into Control Panel > Scanners
and Cameras > Scanner. Since I scan a lot of documents, I'd like to put a
shortcut of this utility onto my desktop. I tried highlighting it but the
option to make a shortcut or copy aren't available. Is there a way to do
this?

I'm on my Win2K system at the moment, so here's what I see - Start menu |
Settings | Control Panel | Right Click Scanners and Cameras and it will ask
you to put a short-cut on the Desktop.

Other than that, you might try if the device has some Imaging Software (like
HP's Image Zone) that might do roughly the same???

Right-click and drag it onto your desktop. It will offer you an opportunity
to create a shortcut.

Both ways work fine. I was trying to access the program itself but having
Scanning & Printers on my desktop cuts out a couple of clicks. As I wrote my
previous statement, it struck me as funny because I first worked with DOS and
I considered Windows 95 a dream come true. Now I'm looking to remove a click
or two . . .

My HP all-in-one printer isn't X64 compatible (even tho I was told that it
was), so that the software for HP's Image Zone won't copy from disk. I went
to the HP site and downloaded the X64 patch that they have but it doesn't
work very well and there's no tech support for it. The site says that the
patch will give printing and scanning capabilities but not fax capabilities.
When I set it up for my new computer, the printer worked fine right away, as
the site said, but I wanted the faxing capability to work also so I did some
research and found a method that works. All I needed to do was punch the
right keys on the control panel. The scanning capability is very poor
though. I used to be able to scan a document to a Word Document. Now when I
scan, I can scan to a Word Doc but it looks like a poorly reduced copy. I'm
still trying improve the quality of the scans but I'm running out of ideas.
I can't use the control panel on the all-in-one because a message appears on
the control panel that says that the all-in-one has no scanning options. So
I use my keyboard and mouse to scan but, as I said, it has very poor quality.

I contacted a Tech at HP and was told that no support is given for the
patch. The website states that also. But the website said that the patch
will give me printing and scanning capabilities but, in truth, it gives only
printing capabilities.

There are certainly differences between models, mine (PSC 2355) hasen't got
the faxing bits, but the scanning works beautyfully from 'Scanners&Cameras',
with the release drivers it even works from the printer's Control Panel. I
haven't got 'Word' so can't check that, but I don't assume you should expect
the driver to perform that kind of conversion. This covers the machine and
the driver(s) - now, the HP Printing software (Zone and Director) is 32bit,
but they are not drivers so I just installed those in the normal fashion,
and it works fine here, I'm not using all the features regularly - indeed,
I'm almost certain that I've not been through all features yet, but the
software seems to do what is was intended to do. If your installed printer
driver isn't supporting your model, the software (Zone and Director) may not
recognize the printer while installing. I do believe, however, that if the
printer works, and you install the software you should be able to have them
to co-operate in some fashion.

If your printer hasn't got any 64bit driver at all, then you can be quite
certain that features will be missing, even though you have gotten it to
perform some of the basic functions with a different driver, which also
isn't all that bad considering.

So, the options I have is that I can scan from either the Windows Control
Panel (Scanners and Cameras) or via ImageZone or Director.

Scanning to a Word.doc used to be perfect, as if it were a Word.doc to begin
with . . . you'd never be able to tell the difference, that's how good it
was. But as long as it has scanning capability, albeit very poor, I'll have
to be satisfied with it. When I purchased the printer, I purchased over
$200.00 of ink cartridges. I won't buy another printer until the ink
cartridges are used up. I purchased the printer and ink cartridges on-line
in December, when I had my old computer (non X64). The printer worked
beautifully with it.
