Managed C++
I was wondering if there is a catch when you use a win32 compiled Managed C++
asssembly on XP 64bit. (2.0 Framework)
My app runs on 32 bit systems fine! But it says that there is a
BadImageFormatException when I try to run it on XP 64bit. It doesn't matter
if the application is compiled for an x64 system or the standard 'mixed
platforms'.
I realize I am basically saying, "It doesn't work." Therefore, I am
specifically asking if you can use a win32 Managed C++ assembly on XP 64bit.
I didn't see an option to compile a Managed C++ project for x64. Tag: Compatible Printer for XP Pro x64 Tag: 17077
Install XP Pro 32bit OEM on XP Pro 64bit OEM, and dual boot
OK, I know this kind of thread has been thrashed to death, but I have yet to
find one that addresses my particular situation. If you think there is a
thread/FAQ/tutorial that addresses my Q's, then please point me in the right
direction!
Current setup:
System model: AWRDACPI
BIOS version: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG
OS: Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Professional x64 Edition (5.2.3790, SP1)
Disk 0: C (primary), D (no array)
Disk 1: E (primary), F (no array)
MS Windows XP Pro 64bit is running on the C partition. Applications/data
have been installed through Windows onto the C, D and F partitions.
Desired setup:
Install MS Windows XP Pro 32bit on the E partition (seperate physical disk
to the 64bit OS install). I would then be able to dual boot, running MS
Windows XP Pro in either 32 or 64bit.
Problems/Q's/Other:
1. How do I go about installing MS Windows XP Pro 32bit? (step by step guide
would be nice, but general tips are OK). Can this be done through Windows
64bit? Using PowerQuest PartitionMagic 8.0? (note I have a separate license
for each version)
2. When I dual boot, will I be able to 'see' the primary partitions of the
other MS Windows XP Pro install? eg. based on current setup, would I be able
to see the C partition if MS Windows XP Pro 32bit is booted from the E
partition?
3. Would installing applications/configuring hardware from MS Windows XP Pro
32bit from the E partition cause any impact to existing
installs/configurations on other partitions?
4. Will my actions in getting the desired setup as described place my data
at increased risk (loss/corruption etc)? Tag: Compatible Printer for XP Pro x64 Tag: 17076

Server 2003 x64 slow networking with wireless clients
I've got Windows Server 2003 x64 eval wired to a home router/network.
Wired connections to the server work as expected, but wireless
connections are painfully slow. I'm talking like dialup slow. Windows
reports the speed at 1 Mbps, but I think that is generous. It's not
the network. The wirelss clients can connect to one another or to
another wired client, and speeds are normal (54 Mbps). Anybody got any
ideas? Tag: Compatible Printer for XP Pro x64 Tag: 17049

File not shown in Explorer?
Hi,
The Remode Desktop Client, mstsc.exe, shows up with the DIR command in a
console:
dir %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\mstsc.exe
You can also run it from Start -> Run.
However, when you browse %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 with Explorer, the file
does not show up! What could be going on?
(The file is not hidden or system, see "attrib
%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\mstsc.exe", but my explorer is configured to show
those files anyway.)

Question to Acer Ferrari 4000 Owners
Sorry for being slightly off topic (it still has to do with Win64 though).
Ok, so on my desktop I have now gone 64 bits 100%, (no dual boot to 32 bit
what so ever), and everything works flawlessly.
I now want to do the same on my laptop and Iam thinking of getting an Acer
Ferrari 4000. I know there are a couple of guys/girls here using that laptop.
I will be using the laptop for presentations and I just wonder if Fn-F5 to
send output to external projector works with whatever video drivers there
are for the 4000 and xp64? I'm asking 'cause I saw somewhere else someone
having problem with the 4000 and doing this (this was with Vista Server though).
Thanks!!

Game port not recognized by Win XP 64bit
Hello,
I recently built a really nice machine based on the Asus A8N SLI Deluxe
motherboard. I added an AMD 64 Athlon X2 CPU and Windows XP 64 bit. This
latter one probably being the cause of my problem but there may be a simple
solution out there that I don't know about. So here's the problem: this
motherboard comes with a USB/MIDI attachment that has a game port on it (2
USB ports and 1 MIDI/Game port). I installed the attachment and connected
an old MS sidewinder joystick to the gameport but the system does not seem
to recognize it. I looked at the device manager and it says that no drivers
are installed for this device. I downloaded the latest Realtek drivers from
the ASUS website but no luck there either. Does anyone know if there are
drivers out there that would allow me to use my old joystick? If not, I
guess I'll have to get a USB joystick.

Printer Driver...
Hello,
Apologies if this question has already been asked.
I have a Lexmark X1180 printer and when I attempt to install the XP driver
(had to have a go!), I receive the following error message:
"The Image file
C:\Lxk1100\drivers\WIN_XP2K\ENGLISH\Setup.exe is valid, but is for a machine
type other than the current machine"
I emailed Lexmark and received the following reply regarding drivers for
XP-64:
"Regarding the error message you are receiving:
Unfortunately the X1180 does not have a 64bit driver and there are no plans
on making drivers for the 64bit Operative System for that printer."
Does this mean that I can never use this printer for XP-64 ?

No. Microsoft declaired that this OEM software is only available with

Getting memory layout info on Itanium ?
Does anyone know how to establish the number of free memory slots in an
Itanium server running 64-bit Windows Enterprise Edition (apart from

We think the memory is made up from 3 x 8GB quads but cannot be sure. Is
there a command available that can be run on the server to show the actual

There are commands to do this from Unix, so we know the hardware is capable
of reporting this level of detail to the OS, we're just not aware of a
command to issue in Windows to get this info. Tag: Compatible Printer for XP Pro x64 Tag: 16915

Solidworks 2005 WORKS under x64...more inside
Ok after many weeks of trials and errors i FINALLY got my copy of Solidworks
2005 to work on x64,i saw many people asking if SW 2005 works under x64,i was
one of those people who said no,but now ill explain how to make it work (this
goes for the original discs of SW 2005,if you are trying to make it work with
something illegal, dont come here to complain that it ain't working) :
SW 2005 support x64 from SP 3.1 and beyond.
- First Take out the plug.
- Second you need to download HASP Device Driver which can be downloaded
from here: http://www.aladdin.co.il/support/hasp/hasp4/enduser.asp
The file is called H4_hinstall.zip
- Unzip the content of that zip,then go to Start-> Run,drag hinstall.exe
into the Run box and add SPACE -i at the end.
- Now install SW 2005 SP0 from your discs. (you will still get an error on
its last disc,ignore it).
- When its done installing, update your copy of SW 2005 with SP 5.0 (or
eariler versions, but keep in mind that you must have at least SP 3.1)
- After its done updating your SP 5.0,go to add/remove programs in your
Control Panel and do a repair for SW 2005.
- Insert your plug back in,now Solidworks 2005 should work fine.
* I even installed SW 2006 and both of them are working together like a
charm (SW 2006 installs fine,no need of any tweaking).
* This little tweak came from the Solidworks support, its not my doing. Tag: Compatible Printer for XP Pro x64 Tag: 16904
Itanium vs Opteron Dual Core
Hello again.
Can somebody please enlighten me in terms of how the Itanium is likely to
compare with Opteron dual core?
I know the Itanium will run HPUX as well as Windows, and I know the Itanium
is pricey! I am not thinking of desktop use here, but just for SERVER use :
* ignoring the HPUX support, are there decent reasons to consider Itanium?
My gut feel is no, but what do I know?
* when running Windows are there discernable performance reasons to go with
one over the other?
* since Itanium has a different software build for the OS, I presume it also
needs different 64 bit application (server) builds; I notice SQL has an
Itanium variant. Is this correct?
* presumably any true .NET applications are platform independant; true?
* is it 'believed' that MS will continue to support Itanium with any 64 bit
builds in the long term? My fear is a repeat of the 'NT' ALPHA/MIPS/PowerPC
scenario which occured early in 32 bit support... most processors no longer
supported.
I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.
Many thanks,

Workaround - DOS under Windows 64bit
Hello
I am a s/w developer and I think it's time I had a 64 bit desktop; partly so
we can produce applications for this platform, partly so we can support our
(32bit) applications on a 64bit platform (inevitably our customers will do
this some time soon...)
I'm likely to go for a new PC with Pentium or Xeon and EM64T; (I want HT
capability and am not prepared to pay the current premium for dual-core
processor on a desktop...)
The trouble is we still develop and support text-only DOS (!) applications.
This is fine under W2K, WinXP... but I realise not so under 64bit.
So, as a workaround I though I could run up Virtual PC on my desktop, and
run up Windows 2000, XP, or even plain DOS.
Does this sound a reasonable workaround?
Are there any caveats I should look out for?
I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Opteron or Athlon 64, Which is better?
I am in the process of evaluating Windows XP64 and the 64 bit
capabilities of the new processors. Basically, I run a lot of stuff
on my workstation during the day and my system is SLOOOOOOW.
I am going to use this machine for business and I need to be able to
do administration from the machine. (RDP is fine, MMC with Remote
Desktops to multiple servers). I am going to spend a few bucks on a
system and I want to be able to use it for VMWare to set up lab
servers so I want a lot of RAM although I do not think I will need
mroe than 4GB (unless I am way off on my assessment).
I am setting it up as a workstation which I will use daily. I will
test our applications and drivers and hardware so I want something
which I will not have TOO much trouble finding drivers for so I plan
to build or buy a machine which I know will have hardware currently
compatible with XP64. I have looked at Alienware's site and I noticed
that if I choose a Athlon 64 system (4800+) then I am only able to
choose XP Pro (32 bit). With their Opteron systems, I can get XP64
but a much slower CPU for around the same price (a dual core is an
extra $1200)
I want a high performance system which I am not gonig to run games on.
I don't mind limiting myself as far as drivers go.
I do run Linux from time to time, and I am assuming that there are NO
issues with Linux drivers, right? LOL I am sure the Linux-only guys
will say so. I figure if I spec the system to run Windows XP64 then
it should run Linux just as easily or better.
I will probably run Windows primarily instead of Linux just so I can
run MMC and Agent 3.0 natively. I can always put Linux in a VM.
Anyone have advice (Duron or Athlon)? How do the speeds compare? Tag: Compatible Printer for XP Pro x64 Tag: 16868

Virtual Server 2005 on 64bit and Opteron Dual Core
I've just read an article at redmondmag.com that says that once Virtual
Server 2005 runs on 64bit Windows (it's in beta now, apparently) although it
will run on AMD Opteron Dual Core CPUs it will not "recognize or use the
second processor core". I'm trying to understand this. If Windows is willing

Can't copy files to mounted partition on XP 64
Hello
I have a 50GB partition dedicated for Program Files (x86). On my
C: disk is an empty folder 'Program Files (x86)'. Using disk manager
I mount this partition to this folder, and everything seems to work
OK.
However, when I try to copy SOME files I get this error:
Cannot copy <filename>: Cannot find the specified file.
Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.
For example, I'm unable to install Visual Studio, copying some plain
text files fails, while .dlls from the same original and same
destination directory copy OK, etc.
If I access the 'Program Files' partition through the drive letter,
everything works fine. Also, everything is fine if I unmount the
partition and copy to the directory.
It seems to be related to the files from CDs, but sometimes the files
from the HD also show this problem.
This is not random behavior, it's always the same files that don't copy.
Also, the same happens with other partitions and other mount points.
It happens even if I copy the file from the CD to the HD, and then
try to copy the same file to the dir with the mounted partition. THe
same happens with the 'Copy of <filename>'.
Please help

IT manager's crash course: 64-bit computing
The kind of hardware you buy can have a profound effect on the success of
your business, but choosing among the available options is now tougher than
ever. The advent of inexpensive, binary-compatible 64-bit processors has
introduced a new facet to the decision-making process. The "early adoption"
phase is over, and affordable 64-bit computers are stampeding toward
businesses of all kinds. Should you stay 32-bit or go 64-bit? In as
non-technical a manner as possible, here is a crash course on 64-bit
hardware, the software that runs on it, and how it affects performance.

Internet Explorer launching after startup
Something just got in to my computer lately. Every time I boot up my
computer, Internet Explorer 6.0 starts automatically and stays silently in
task manager. Then during the day it keeps sending out popup windows with
all kind of advertisements. I have to go to task manager\process tab to
kill it. How do I stop this?
TIA

Should I upgrade to 64 bit?
We have a small home office with 3 networked computers, but we can not afford
to lose our data.
My own new unit is a 64 bit capable AMD.
I bought a brand new separate HD to make sure I can do a successful 64 bit
XP installation on it before committing to it.
My question is: â??Should I botherâ???
I know one day eventually we'll all move to 64 bit, but will I have more
trouble with drivers and networking and file sharing with the 32 bit
computers then it's worth right now? Tag: Compatible Printer for XP Pro x64 Tag: 16815
Formatting hard drive fir 64 bit
I just got a new 160Gb Hitachi HD for my 64 bit caapable AMD, but the disk
formnatting CD does not have a 64 bit option, so I can not install the Win
XP64.
Where can I get a 64 bit disk formatter? Tag: Compatible Printer for XP Pro x64 Tag: 16813
a general question about 64bit programs
is a program supposed to run faster when it is built for x64 system?
i can configure my visual studio to build programs targeting 64bit
windows, but if i do not write any code different from those in 32bit
program, is there supposed to be any difference in performance?
and also, what benefits do developers get? 64bit integer? any
differences in float point computation?

Wait for Norton stuff next year
The Norton products such as Norton Antivirus and Internet security 2006
won't work with xp x64 and there is no prospect of a norton firewall or
antivirus for 64 bit until vista comes out.

Sorry. Symantec doesn't see xp x64 as a consumer operating system.

The Brother MFC 420CN has 64 bit drivers and is an all-in-one solution.
Bought mine at Staples for 129.99. Works nice and no problems installing.
